Background

On December 4, 1972, 7-year-old Steven Stayner vanished while walking home from school in Merced, California. For more than seven years, his family searched for answers, never knowing what happened. Then, in March 1980, they were unexpectedly reunited after Steven and another boy managed to escape from their captor.1

The details of Steven’s ordeal were shocking and heartbreaking. He had been abducted and held prisoner for years by a vile, twisted predator with a long history of abusing children. Though Steven had defied the odds and escaped, the years of abuse and trauma had taken a toll and would impact the rest of his life.

Abduction of Steven Stayner

Steven Gregory Stayner was born on April 18, 1965, in Merced, California, the third of five children of Delbert and Kay Stayner. He grew up in a close-knit family with three sisters and an older brother, Cary, in a small agricultural community in California's Central Valley. By every account, he was an energetic, friendly, and trusting boy.[1]

On December 4, 1972, Steven left school and started his walk home. He never arrived. During his walk, a young man approached Steven, claiming to be a local church representative passing out religious tracts. The man said he was seeking donations and asked if Steven’s mother might be able to contribute.

The trusting 7-year-old said she might, and the man then coaxed him into a waiting vehicle. Inside was Kenneth Parnell. The men drove Steven far from Merced to a cabin near Catheys Valley, California, where Parnell began building a false world around him. He told Steven his parents could no longer afford him and had signed over legal custody. To a terrified child cut off from everyone he knew, the lies took hold. Parnell gave the boy a new name: Dennis Gregory Parnell. [1]

The abuse began almost immediately and escalated over the days that followed. Parnell sexually assaulted Steven soon after taking him and, within about two weeks, was raping him repeatedly, all the while repeating the lie that his family had abandoned him and there was nowhere else to go.

When hours passed with no sign of Steven, the Stayners reported him missing, and an urgent search began. Days became weeks and weeks became months with no answers. What the family could not have known was that Steven had been taken by a sexual predator who had planned the crime carefully.

A Dangerous Predator

Kenneth Eugene Parnell was born on September 26, 1931, in Amarillo, Texas, into instability. His father was an alcoholic who abandoned the family when Parnell was six. Parnell's biographer Mike Echols later wrote that the boy was so distraught by the abandonment that he pulled four of his own teeth out with pliers. 2

After his father left, Parnell, his mother, and his half-siblings moved to Bakersfield, California, where she ran a boarding house. At 13, Parnell was allegedly sexually abused by one of the boarders (though he would deny this in a later interview). As a youth, Parnell was arrested several times for crimes such as arson and car theft.[2]

In March 1951, at age 19, Parnell was convicted of sexually abusing an eight-year-old boy and impersonating a police officer. A court-appointed psychiatrist labeled him a "sexual psychopath," and he was sentenced to three to four years in San Quentin State Prison. Only days before the trial, his 15-year-old wife had given birth to a daughter; after the conviction, she left him, and a court order barred him from contact with the child.3

Parnell served his time, but the offenses did not stop. Over the following two decades, he cycled through various arrests and institutions, including an armed robbery conviction in Utah.

By the early 1970s, Parnell was working around Yosemite National Park, where he met Ervin Edward Murphy, a younger, more suggestible and naive man whom Parnell was able to manipulate. Parnell told Murphy he wanted to take a boy and raise him under a religious-style arrangement. Murphy later said he never grasped Parnell's true intentions, but he nonetheless helped Parnell search for a child.4

It was Murphy who first initiated contact with Steven on December 4, 1972, gaining the boy’s trust and coaxing him into the car where Kenneth Parnell was waiting.[4]

A Childhood Stolen

Unlike many abductors, Parnell did not keep his victim hidden away. He moved Steven around Northern California, posing as his father, enrolled him in local schools under the name Dennis Parnell, and even registered his real birth date, April 18, 1965. [1] To the outside world, they looked like an ordinary father and son. But behind this facade was a kidnapped and abused child.[1]

Parnell also allowed Steven unusual freedoms for a boy his age, letting him smoke marijuana and drink while still just a child. These privileges made Steven feel older and more mature, even as they bound him more tightly to the life Parnell had built. Those distorted years would shape Steven long after his escape.[1]

One unexpected comfort in those years was a dog named Queenie, given to Steven by Parnell. The dog had come from Parnell's own mother, who had no idea a captive child was living under her son's control. In a childhood stripped of nearly everything familiar, Queenie was one of Steven's few sources of companionship.[1]

For roughly eighteen months, Parnell lived with a girlfriend, Barbara Mathias, who became part of the household in which Steven was held. By Steven's later account, Mathias took part in the abuse, and he said that at nine years old he was assaulted by both Parnell and Mathias.5

In 1975, on Parnell's instruction, Mathias tried to lure another boy from the Santa Rosa Boys' Club. The attempt failed. Mathias later claimed she never knew "Dennis" had been kidnapped. [5] Parnell also tried to use Steven to gain other children's trust. Steven later said he intentionally sabotaged these attempts because he did not want to see another child face the same trauma that he had endured.[1]

Kidnapping of Timothy White

By early 1980, Steven Stayner was fourteen and understood the truth: Kenneth Parnell had lied to him. His parents had never abandoned him. Then, on February 14, 1980, Parnell and an acquaintance of Steven's, Randall "Sean" Poorman, kidnapped five-year-old Timothy White in Ukiah, California. Parnell dyed the boy's blond hair darker to disguise him, intending to repeat what he had done to Steven years earlier.6

But Steven was no longer the frightened 7-year-old who had vanished from Merced. In White's situation, he recognized his own, and he knew exactly what lay ahead for the boy if no one stepped in.

Escape

On March 1, 1980, after Parnell went to his job as a night-shift security guard, Steven took Timothy and left. The two boys hitchhiked roughly twenty-four miles through the dark, eventually making their way to the Ukiah police station in Mendocino County. [6] Steven told officers his harrowing story as well as his real identity.[1]

His bravery had prevented another child from suffering the same abuse that he had endured. Reflecting on his escape in a 1984 Newsweek interview, he stated, “I couldn’t see Timmy suffer; it was my do-or-die chance.”7

Before he even got to see his family, he was already being interviewed by the news media. His emotional reunion with his parents was captured live on camera. Many more interviews followed as Steven’s amazing story became highly publicized national news.

Investigation

On March 2, 1980 — one day after the escape — Kenneth Parnell was arrested.[1] As detectives looked into Parnell’s past, they found a man with a long history of targeting children, including his 1951 arrest and subsequent conviction. However, despite the horrific nature of his crimes and the obvious danger he posed, the Mendocino County prosecutors elected not to prosecute Parnell for the sexual assaults that occurred within their jurisdiction.

Many of the other assaults were not charged either, as they occurred outside Mendocino County or were outside the statute of limitations. This stunning decision became part of the case's lasting controversy.[3]

Trial and Conviction of Kenneth Parnell

Kenneth Parnell was tried for the kidnappings of Steven Stayner and Timothy White but not for the sexual abuse. In 1981, Parnell was convicted at trial; the verdict in the Stayner kidnapping came down in December 1981.8

Parnell was sentenced to just seven years in prison and served five before being paroled in 1985.[4] To many, the sentence was a shocking disgrace that did not begin to make up for the damage he had done.

Ervin Murphy, the young man who had lured Steven into the car in 1972, was also convicted and sentenced to five years, with credit for twenty-three months already served.[4]

Lasting Damage

Steven Stayner had vanished as a seven-year-old and returned as a teenager. The reunion with his family proved to be as complicated as it was joyful. He had been raised for years under Parnell's influence, granted adult freedoms no child should have, and coming home meant learning to be a son again. He later recalled:

"I returned almost a grown man, and yet my parents saw me at first as their 7-year-old. After they stopped trying to teach me the fundamentals all over again, it got better. But why doesn't my dad hug me anymore? Everything has changed. Sometimes I blame myself. I don't know sometimes if I should have come home. Would I have been better off if I didn't?"[1]

Readjusting to life after his ordeal proved to be difficult. Steven refused to discuss the details of his abuse. His sister would later say that Steven did not seek counseling because his father said he “didn’t need any.” He was frequently bullied in school, and his relationship with his family became strained.

Though the world called him a hero, privately he was a young man working to understand what had happened to him. In 1985, he married Jody Edmondson, and the couple had two children, Ashley and Steven Jr.

Building a stable family mattered fiercely to a man whose own childhood had been stolen. He spoke out for missing children, and in 1989 his story reached millions through the television miniseries I Know My First Name Is Steven.[1]

On September 16, 1989, Steven Stayner was tragically killed at the age of twenty-four in Merced, California. Riding home from his job at a pizza parlor on a rainy evening, his motorcycle was struck by a car that turned in front of him; the driver sped off, and Steven, who was not wearing a helmet, died from his injuries.9

The funeral for Steven Stayner, the brave young man who had escaped captivity nearly a decade earlier, was attended by nearly five hundred people, with 14-year-old Timothy White serving as a pallbearer.

Further Crimes and Death of Kenneth Parnell

Not surprisingly, Kenneth Parnell’s inexplicably light prison sentence did not deter his predatory ways. By the early 2000s, he was living in Berkeley, California, and though wheelchair-bound and needing around-the-clock care after a stroke, diabetes, and emphysema, he was still dangerous.

In late 2002 and early 2003, he asked his caregiver, Diane Stevens, to help him obtain a young child. Stevens, who had learned of his history, went to the police. Parnell offered $500 for a 4-year-old boy ($100 for a birth certificate and $400 upon delivery). The child (who did not exist) was part of a sting operation. Police arrested Parnell in January 2003.10

In 2004, at 72-years-old, Parnell was convicted of attempting to purchase a child and related charges and sentenced to 25 years to life under California's three-strikes law. He died on January 21, 2008, at the California Medical Facility in Vacaville, at age 76.[10]

Legacy

Steven Stayner's story remains one of the most remarkable survival cases in American criminal history. Despite his own horrific trauma and abuse, he risked everything to help save another child. Timothy White grew up to become a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy and stayed close to the Stayner family. On April 1, 2010, Timothy White died of a pulmonary embolism at age 35.11

That August, a memorial statue was dedicated at Applegate Park in Merced, depicting a teenage Steven leading young Timothy White by the hand, a moment that changed both their lives.[1]

The Stayner family would be marked by darkness once again when, in 1999, a decade after Steven's death, his older brother, Cary Stayner, murdered four women in and around Yosemite National Park. Convicted and sentenced to death, Cary turned a family already defined by one of America's most harrowing survival stories into the subject of one of its most disturbing.12

Steven Stayner survived something unimaginable, but survival alone did not erase the scars of what had been done. His story is a reminder that escaping captivity is only the beginning, that the work of healing can last a lifetime, and that a single act of courage can give another person the future you were nearly denied.

Background

Between 1993 and 1997, at least twelve people were murdered by an unidentified killer in the forests surrounding the Russian city of Samara. The killer mainly targeted couples parked in their vehicles.

The crimes led to an intensive investigation, and though numerous suspects were interviewed and one man was even convicted of two of the killings (though his guilt remains a subject of debate), police were unable to apprehend or identify the unknown killer who came to be known as the “Forest Maniac.”

The “Triangle of Love”

During the 1990s, Samara was a large industrial city on the Volga River with many factories, apartment blocks and universities. Yet just past these urbanized districts lay woodlands, ravines and winding roads. Outside the Krasnoglinsky district, three settlements — Upravlenchesky, Gorny and Starosemeykino — sat close enough that the woods between them formed a rough triangle locals called the Treugolnik Lyubvi, the “Triangle of Love.” [2]

Once a car left the main road, it could vanish among the trees. Young couples often drove out to the forest at night, parked somewhere quiet, and had a few hours to themselves. The route became known as the “Road of Love.” For years the arrangement worked fine. Until the summer of 1993.

September 1993

On September 1, 1993, police found an abandoned Lada hatchback in the woods near Upravlenchesky. It belonged to a young man identified by Russian accounts as Kozlov. Not far away, investigators found his body and that of a woman, Perova; both had been stabbed repeatedly in the chest and neck, and had died the same night. Relatives said the two were romantically involved. [2]

1993 was a violent year in Russia. The Soviet Union was gone, and gangs were carving up cities, and a double stabbing in the woods looked to detectives like exactly the kind of thing a local gang did over money or turf. It would be several years before the murders were recognized as part of a larger pattern.

1996 Murders

For almost three years, the forests were quiet. Then, on the night of May 18, 1996, Yegor Sidorenko and his girlfriend, Kolmychkova, parked near a hamlet called Sorokiny Khutor. Around three in the morning, she got out and saw someone among the trees, watching. Sidorenko got out to talk to the stranger and was stabbed about eleven times. Wounded, he watched the attacker chase Kolmychkova down and stab her, then drive off in their car with her still inside.1

Sidorenko survived. He crawled to the highway and was picked up by a passing driver. He later gave police a description detailed enough for a facial composite: a man in camouflage and a mask, carrying a knife and a spade. [1]

Three days later, the couple's car was found empty and abandoned about 15 kilometers away; Kolmychkova's body was found the next day roughly 150 meters from the car. She had been stabbed nine times in the chest.

For the first time, investigators wondered whether there may be a link between this crime and the unsolved 1993 case. The pattern —a couple attacked as they were parked in the woods at night—was too similar to ignore.

Through the summer of 1996, the attacks continued around the same stretch of forest. On July 24, 1996, investigators found a burned car near Studenyi Ovrag with the body of its owner, Isaichev, inside and the body of 19-year-old Vedernikova in the trunk. The fire destroyed most of the evidence, but it was determined that both victims had been stabbed before being set on fire. 2

On the night of August 1, two more victims were attacked in the same area. One was seriously injured but survived; the other went missing, and their body was discovered a week later near the village of Vodino. [1]

Then, early on September 3, 1996, near Novosemeykino, a man named Mamuka Santaladze and his girlfriend, Alevtina Butkevich, were fired on through their car window with a sawed-off shotgun. Santaladze was hit and then knifed. However, he managed to grab Butkevich's hand, and the two ran through the forest and made it to the highway, where they flagged down a car. Both victims survived and gave a second description of the assailant. [1]

The couple’s stolen car turned up the next day with the radio and cassette tapes gone, a curious detail investigators had noticed at almost every scene. On October 6, two more victims, Bochkarev and Goleva, disappeared from the same forest. Goleva’s body was found nine days later, her hands bound, while Bochkarev’s body was not discovered until November 13, more than fifteen kilometers away. [1]

By the autumn of 1996, the press had named the killer the “Forest Maniac,” and in Russian reports “Leshy,” the forest spirit of folklore said to lure travelers off the road forever. There were unsubstantiated rumors that he called out for help in a woman's voice to draw victims in, and that one body had been posed. Though these claims were never confirmed, they only added to the growing fear. [1]

The Chase

By November, the investigation was intensified, with patrols increased and concentrated around the forest roads. In the early hours of November 23, 1996, Dmitry Korotkov and Elena Kulakovskaya were killed as they sat together in a blue Lada near the Upravlenchesky–Gorny road.3

The attacker took Korotkov's car toward the Krasnoglinsky Highway, where inspector Pavel Esipov and 21-year-old officer Yevgeny Zemlyakov noticed the car pull from the forest with its headlights off. They signaled for it to stop, but the driver sped up.

The chase ran several kilometers before the driver jumped out and ran into the trees. Zemlyakov followed on foot, and the man turned and fired the sawed-off shotgun into his stomach before escaping into the dark. Luckily, Zemlyakov survived.

In the abandoned car's trunk, officers found Korotkov's body, and beside it a camouflage jacket which his family said did not belong to him. Kulakovskaya was missing. Her decomposed remains were found the following May, about 300 meters from the Lesnoye cemetery. [1]

By spring 1997 the pressure was enormous. After the shooting of Officer Zemlyakov, the regional prosecutor assembled a task force of 29. Officially, they were investigating the attempted murder of a policeman, but everyone knew they were hunting the Forest Maniac, who by then was linked to at least nine deaths. [2] The killer clearly knew the woods, and investigators focused on people familiar with the area, including those whose work took them into isolated country.

Decoy officers even posed as couples in an attempt to draw out the killer. During the investigation, evidence began to point in an unsettling direction. Some of the crimes occurred near penal colonies, and in one case a victim's hands had been restrained with a trouser belt fitted with handcuffs that were standard issue for prison-colony officers. [1] The search widened to police and correctional staff.

Ultimately, about 1,500 law-enforcement personnel were checked. Four fit the profile, and in April 1997, blood, hair, and clothing from the four as well as from the crime scenes were sent to labs in Moscow. As they waited on the results, one suspect drew particular attention: Dmitry Viktorovich Voroshilov. [1]

Arrest of Dmitry Voroshilov

Dmitry Voroshilov was a 30-year-old Major of the Internal Service and Chief of Security at a penal colony near Samara that held convicts being treated for tuberculosis. His job put him around weapons, restraints, and the surrounding country, and his build matched survivors' description of a physically powerful man. [1]

Colleagues painted an unsettling picture: complaints from female staff, a slap, a threat to kill a doctor, a habit of calling women “witches.” A psychiatric evaluation flagged a personality disorder and epilepsy yet cleared him for duty. His martial-arts trainer called him an unusually capable fighter who could strike with either hand [1]

When the lab results came back in mid-1997, the case rested on the camouflage jacket left in Korotkov's car, but the forensics were far from clean. This was blood-group and trace analysis, not DNA, and the blood-group results were inconclusive because the stains matched three different groups and Korotkov and Voroshilov shared the same one.

Investigators arrested Voroshilov at correctional colony No. 65/19 on July 30, 1997; and within days he was charged with two murders and three assaults. He denied all of the charges, saying he'd been set up. Voroshilov was sent to the Serbsky Center in Moscow for evaluation; he was ruled sane but showed signs of epilepsy and a mixed personality disorder. [1]

Conviction and Sentence

At trial in 1999, before Judge Valery Kurylev, the prosecution relied heavily on jacket forensics and eyewitnesses. One of the officers who chased Voroshilov identified him but admitted he'd seen the fleeing man's face lit by headlights for only seconds; thus, the identification was ruled shaky.

Worse for the state, the two survivors who had seen their attacker up close — Santaladze and Butkevich could not identify Voroshilov; Santaladze insisted their attack was an unrelated carjacking, not the Forest Maniac. [1]

The case also drew scandal. Almost immediately after his arrest, Voroshilov said he'd been tortured into cooperating during a September 1997 interrogation. Six officers were investigated, and the case dragged into 1999, ending in acquittal, though all six officers were quietly dismissed. [1]

In the end, the Samara District Court convicted Voroshilov of murdering Korotkov and Kulakovskaya and of the assaults on Santaladze, Butkevich and Officer Zemlyakov. He was sentenced to 15 years: the maximum under the code at the time. The Supreme Court of Russia upheld the conviction on March 6, 2000. A complaint to the European Court of Human Rights was rejected on December 8, 2005.

Voroshilov served his full term and was released in July 2012. [1]

Case Remains Unresolved

At first, it seemed that Voroshilov’s conviction had put an end to the case. However, even after his arrest, six similar murders occurred in the woods around Samara between 1997 and 1998, leaving many to believe that the killer was still out there. However, authorities maintained that they had arrested and convicted the man responsible for the “Forest Maniac” killings. [1]

Then, in February 1999, a fire tore through the Samara Regional Interior Ministry building, killing 57 officers and injuring hundreds. According to Russian accounts, it also destroyed huge volumes of evidence and files, including the camouflage jacket on which every forensic match had depended. [1]

The questions kept coming. In 2023, Russia's Investigative Committee reportedly reviewed the case, leading to doubts about Voroshilov’s guilt, citing a claim that he couldn't drive, a claim that sat oddly beside a driver's license in his own file. [1]

In June 2025, Russian outlets reported that Voroshilov, by then around 58, had moved to Dnipropetrovsk Oblast around 2022 and joined the Ukrainian armed forces.4

Today the forests around the old Triangle of Love are quiet. Couples still go there, and there have been no killings matching the Forest Maniac in close to thirty years. With the key evidence long destroyed, the Forest Maniac case endures as an unresolved chapter in Samara's history.

Background

Between 1982 and 1994, several women and girls in and around the Kansas City metro area fell victim to a vicious serial killer. After disappearing, their bodies were later found floating in the Missouri River, often partially dismembered. The strange pattern of severing the victims' legs led authorities to link the killings across more than a decade.

The unknown murderer, who came to be known as the Missouri River Killer, was never caught. To this day, the case remains unsolved, though many believe the killer died a free man.

A Chilling Pattern

On August 6th, 1986, the body of 24-year-old Melody Jo Milliner was found floating in the Missouri River.1 A resident of Kansas City, Melody had been working as a prostitute to support herself and her 2-year-old daughter, and she could often be found near Independence Avenue.

Police initially theorized she may have met her killer while working on the street. Her father owned a farm in Kansas that Melody often visited, and according to him, she was, or had been, assisting police with an ongoing investigation prior to her death. The autopsy revealed she had died from multiple stab wounds.

Less than two years later, on May 7th, 1988, the body of Linda Dennis was found on the north side of the river. Also a native of Kansas City, Linda was only 17. Authorities could not determine a cause of death due to the advanced state of decomposition, but her body was found entangled in driftwood in a manner that suggested foul play. Linda had previously been arrested on a prostitution charge that was later dropped; though she may still have been working, police could not develop solid leads.

The next discovery came only three days later, when a fisherman found the body of 19-year-old Kimberly Rash, who had gone missing little more than a month earlier. Like Melody, Kimberly had worked as a prostitute in Kansas City, though not in the same areas, and like Melody, she had died of multiple stab wounds (more than 31).

The links between these cases could no longer be ignored.

The very same day, 16-year-old Rhonda Dennis was found floating in the river. She had also been stabbed, precisely 31 times, and her clothes had been removed. Unlike some earlier victims, Rhonda had no known history of prostitution; the one potential link was that she lived on Independence Avenue, the same street where Melody usually worked. A pattern was emerging.

A Disturbing M.O.

Beyond the other similarities, one bizarre detail recurred among the recovered bodies. In the cases of Melody and Kimberly, both of their legs had been amputated. Two bodies turning up within two years of each other, in the same river, each one with both legs removed, this detail all but eliminated the possibility of coincidence.

When 13-year-old Beverlie Tracy's body was found floating in the river on April 15th, 1991, eleven days after she was reported missing, police suspected the same offender. Although Beverlie had died of gunshot wounds to the chest rather than stab wounds, both of her legs had been amputated.

Three years later, on September 12th, 1994, the gruesome M.O. resurfaced. No body was found at first — only a severed leg. The following day, the torso of 36-year-old Viola McCoy was recovered.

Viola had last been seen on September 8th after reportedly running off following an argument with her boyfriend, and she had a history of drug abuse. Whatever the circumstances, the amputation of her legs suggested her case was related to the others.

The recurring pattern prompted police to re-examine older unsolved cases, and in doing so they may have identified the killer's first victim. Annette K. Parker, 27, had been found floating in the Missouri River on May 31st, 1982. She had been stabbed 13 times in the chest and had a rope tied around her neck.

Unlike the later victims, Annette was not from Kansas City but from Omaha, Nebraska, and had been missing a little over a week when two fishermen found her. Because of the similarity in M.O., police came to believe Annette was the earliest victim of the Missouri River Killer.

Suspects

In 1988, following the discovery of Linda, Kimberly, and Rhonda, the FBI joined a special unit with officers from Ray County and the Kansas City Police Department. Within a month, however, the task force was disbanded, and the FBI withdrew. As Ray County Sheriff Tom Harmon told the Columbia Daily Tribune in June 1988, investigators “just couldn’t put anything together.”2

However, authorities promised to pursue any new leads.

In August 1992, police thought they had a suspect: a local Kansas City doctor previously charged with drugging and sexually assaulting two female patients during house calls. Speculation ran wild after Grain Valley Police Chief Skip Hedges claimed the doctor's office was located near Independence Avenue, implying a link to the area where Melody worked and Beverlie lived.

That claim about the office location proved false, and no evidence tied the doctor to the murders. His attorney, Robert Beaird, called the investigation ludicrous, saying he "wouldn't be surprised if next week we hear a report that ties [his client] to the Kennedy assassination."3

During the investigation, police focused on a man named Gregory Breeden. A Kansas City supply clerk who had served in the U.S. Navy from 1965 to 1968, Breeden had initially been looked at in relation to Annette Parker's death. He claimed the two were engaged and was released without charge. He would nonetheless become the primary suspect in Parker's death and the six other killings authorities attributed to the same offender.

On November 2nd, 1994, Kansas City Police raided Breeden's home in the middle of the night. He was arrested on check-forgery charges, but during the search, authorities recovered 19 knives as well as clothing that resembled the type Melody Milliner had been wearing when she disappeared.

In 1996, while Breeden was serving a 10-year sentence for check fraud, he was indicted for Viola McCoy's murder. Even still, bodies continued to surface in the river during his incarceration, though investigators at the time considered them unrelated.

On April 1st, 1999, the murder charge was dropped due to a lack of evidence after a jailhouse informant refused to cooperate. After his release, Breeden maintained his innocence, admitting he knew some of the women from the Independence Avenue area but denying any involvement in their deaths.

In May 2014, Breeden was found dead in his Bates County motel room, believed to have been dead for as long as a week; his death was ruled natural.4 As the last primary suspect, his passing was a blow to victims’ families still searching for answers.

Closing Thoughts

With the death of the primary suspect and the absence of any significant new leads, investigators had little to go on. The case remains open, and anyone with information is encouraged to come forward. However long ago it may seem, the families of these women still hope for the closure they deserve.

Background

On a quiet night in March 1984, the president of one of Japan's most famous candy companies was abducted from his home by masked men. What first looked like a frightening kidnapping soon morphed into something much bigger and stranger.

Ransom demands, poisoned candy, taunting letters, public humiliation of the police, and a criminal group that always seemed one step ahead.

For more than a year, Japan was haunted by an unknown group calling itself “The Monster with 21 Faces.” More than forty years later, the questions remain. Who were they? Why did they target Japan's biggest food companies? And how did they vanish so completely that no one was ever charged?

The Monster Emerges

During the 1980s, Japan was seen as one of the safest, most disciplined, and modern countries in the world. Its cities were busy, its companies powerful, its police respected. People trusted the food they bought. Families bought sweets for their children without a second thought. However, in 1984, a shadowy group of criminals would shatter that sense of safety.

The criminals later took the name “The Monster with 21 Faces,” or Kaijin Nijūichi Mensō. The name was adapted from a fictional villain — "The Fiend with Twenty Faces" — created by the mystery writer Edogawa Rampo.1 The gang simply added one more face. Yet this monster was not a work of fiction; it was hauntingly real.

The group committed crimes, wrote taunting letters, mocked the police, threatened powerful companies, poisoned food, and turned candy into something to be feared.

Background

During the 1990s, the city of Bath in South West England was at the center of Britain’s longest-running serial rape investigation, codenamed Operation Eagle. The assailant, who police linked to at least 17 attacks, came to be known as the “Batman Rapist” after leaving behind a baseball cap with a Batman logo at one of the crime scenes.

Despite the scope of the investigation and the resources allocated, the rapist was never captured or identified. More than thirty years later, the case remains open. This is the story of the man the press called the Batman Rapist.

A Historic City

Named for its well-preserved Roman baths and elegant Georgian terraces, the city of Bath, Somerset, located about 100 miles west of London, in South West England, is known for its beauty and history and draws thousands of visitors annually. In 1987, UNESCO named the city a World Heritage Site.

Like any city, Bath was not free of crime — there were burglaries, car thefts, the occasional robbery — but violent crime was rare compared with London, Birmingham, or Manchester. Women routinely walked back to parked cars after an evening out without giving it much thought.

However, that would all change beginning in the early 1990s, when a series of abductions and sexual assaults shook the area.

Assaults Begin

On May 21, 1991, a 36-year-old woman finishing a night shift drove home to the Southdown area of Bath. As she parked in a lane behind her house, a man suddenly seized her, covered her mouth, and held a knife to her throat. He forced her to drive to a rough track off Combe Hay Lane, on the edge of the city, where he raped her before disappearing into the dark.1

The victim reported the attack at once, and Avon and Somerset Constabulary began to investigate. She described her attacker as a white man, around 5 feet 9 inches tall, slim, with blue eyes and short brown hair, clean-shaven, with a noticeable scar below his lower lip. 2

He wore dark clothing and seemed calm and in control — a man who appeared to know exactly what he wanted to do. Then, on October 23, 1991, an 18-year-old woman was attacked on Bathwick Hill, and her description of the assailant closely matched the description of the man from the Southdown attack. The similarities were hard to ignore.

An Inconsistent Pattern

After the October 1991 attack, the assaults stopped for a period of three years until the next attack in November 1994. This assault was again followed by a period of inactivity until September 1996, when a 19-year-old woman was abducted and raped in Kingswood, near Bristol.

Even though all of the previous and later assaults occurred within the city of Bath, the Kingswood rape was linked to the suspect due to the M.O. and description of the perpetrator. The attacker would approach his victims as they reached their cars, and then drive them to a secluded area where the assaults occurred.

After interviewing several of the victims, investigators found that the attacker seemed to have a sexual fixation on women’s tights, often ripping them during the attacks. They also found it unusual that after the assaults, the rapist would often drive the victims back to the location where he had abducted them before fleeing.

According to a January 2000 Guardian article, there were three assaults in 1996 and another three in 1997. After that, there was another period of inactivity until 1999.

By the mid-1990s, detectives had stopped treating the attacks as separate crimes. The victims appeared to be chosen because they were alone — students, workers, women out by themselves — not because the offender knew them. Most attacks came in the evening, between roughly 6 and 8 p.m., or in the late hours after the pubs and clubs had emptied.

All but one of the assaults occurred within the city of Bath, leading investigators to conclude that the rapist was very familiar with the city, its side streets, secluded car parks, and country lanes, leading police to believe he lived, worked, or spent significant time in the city.

The “Batman Rapist”

On the evening of January 26, 1999, a 39-year-old woman was getting into her car on Forrester Lane when a man tried to abduct her. She fought back, screamed, and resisted. Fearing the noise would draw witnesses, the attacker fled, and in his rush, he dropped his baseball cap.

Lying on the ground was a faded cap bearing a Batman logo. The hat was collected, photographed, and sent for forensic examination in the hope it carried fibers, hairs, or biological traces. Despite the limits of the technology at the time, scientists recovered a DNA profile believed to belong to the attacker. It was a major breakthrough after nearly a decade chasing a man with no name.

As journalists reported the incident, newspapers and television began calling the unknown offender the "Batman Rapist." The name spread quickly, and the case became national news. Detectives appealed to the public, asking people to think about friends, relatives, or colleagues who might fit the description or who wore such a cap.

Surprisingly, the near-miss did not deter the rapist. Investigators believe that within minutes of fleeing Forrester Lane, the offender attacked another woman nearby, forcing her toward the village of Monkton Combe. The crime illustrated just how determined he was, even after nearly being caught.

Operation Eagle

By early 2000, Avon and Somerset Police established a major investigation codenamed Operation Eagle.3 Senior detectives reviewed each attack, comparing witness statements, crime scene reports, and all physical evidence collected since 1991, mapping every location for patterns. The more they dug, the clearer it became that the same individual was responsible for all of the assaults.

Authorities appealed to the public for assistance. Thousands of witness statements were collected; hundreds of tips came in. None identified the offender outright, but each one helped to eliminate suspects. Detectives built a behavioral profile of a patient, methodical man who probably held a regular job and blended quietly into the community.

The man was described as a White male with a slim to medium build, between 30 and 50 years old, who was very familiar with the city of Bath and was also likely familiar with the Bristol area.

On January 25 2000, the case featured on the BBC's Crimewatch UK, with a reconstruction of how the offender approached victims. Six women who had never reported their attacks came forward after the show had aired. Tips from viewers poured in, and in October 2000, the operation carried out what was described as the largest leaflet distribution in a British criminal investigation at the time, reaching around 25,000 homes in Bath.

In January 2001, the Forensic Science Service applied a then-new technique, Low Copy Number (LCN) DNA profiling, which could recover a usable profile from far smaller amounts of genetic material. It gave investigators a full DNA fingerprint of the attacker but no name to match it to. Detectives asked roughly 2,000 men whose names had surfaced during the investigation to give DNA voluntarily. One by one, all 2,000 names were cleared.

Offender Profile

With the DNA testing failing to return a match, investigators were left to theorize as to the offender’s identity. In addition to the physical description given by victims, and the fact that the rapist was familiar with the city of Bath, police also took note of the long periods of inactivity in between assaults.

They speculated that during these periods, the offender may have been in prison, serving in the armed forces, or otherwise living away from the area. A name submitted to Crimewatch — a diplomat's son — was found to have been living abroad with his father during some of the gap dates, though this tip did not lead to an arrest.

Detectives also questioned whether the Batman Rapist may have been tied to other unsolved cases, most prominently the disappearance and murder of Melanie Hall. Hall, a 25-year-old hospital clerical worker, vanished on June 9, 1996, after a night out at a Bath nightclub; her remains were found in October 2009 near a slip road on the M5. Because she disappeared in Bath during the same period, investigators compared the DNA; however, the forensic evidence did not support a link between the two cases.

Current Status of the Case

More than three decades after the first attack, Operation Eagle has never closed. There have been no confirmed attacks since January 2000, but detectives continue to review the evidence whenever new technology or information emerges, making it Britain's longest-running serial rape investigation.

Modern methods such as forensic genetic genealogy have solved decades-old cold cases elsewhere by comparing crime-scene DNA with family-history databases, though its use varies by country and legal framework.

A DNA profile can only identify someone if there is a sample to match it against; if the offender's DNA has never entered the relevant databases, the profile alone cannot name him. That has been one of Operation Eagle's greatest frustrations.

Avon and Somerset Police have never stopped appealing for help, and the charity Crimestoppers has offered a £10,000 reward for information leading to the offender's capture — a reward that still stands.4 The investigation has also shaped how serious sexual-offense cases are handled in Britain, reinforcing the value of preserving physical evidence for decades so newer techniques can be applied later.

More than thirty years after the first attack, the Batman Rapist remains unidentified.

Background

Even within the disturbing world of true crime, there is something deeply unsettling about the unknown. Whether we are talking about missing persons cases or unidentified criminals, our minds instinctively yearn for resolution. When we are left with unanswered questions, we struggle to find closure and make sense of what has happened.

The term serial killer often brings to mind notorious individuals such as Ted Bundy, Gary Ridgeway, or Dennis Rader. These men were unmasked and exposed as the monsters they were. However, in the cases of Ridgeway and Rader, it took decades before they were identified and arrested. For years, they were known only as the Green River Killer and BTK Killer, respectively.

Luckily, through the efforts of law enforcement as well as the arrogance and reckless behavior of the killers, they were eventually brought to justice. However, over the years, there have been several serial killers who were never caught or even identified. One of the most famous examples is the elusive Jack the Ripper, who stalked and murdered sex workers during the late 1880s in the infamous Whitechapel slums of East London.

Though speculation about his identity continued over the years, he was never positively identified. Another lesser-known serial killer who was active a few decades after the Ripper was a mysterious figure known as “Billy the Axeman.” Discrepancies arise about the number of victims and the years that the killer was active, with the conservative estimate at 24-30 victims and being active primarily between 1911 and 1912.

Some estimates place the victim count closer to 100, which would make him one of the most prolific serial killers in American history. Whatever the actual number is, the killer’s identity was never discovered, and his story is one of tragedy and senseless violence.

“The Man From the Train”

In 2017, Bill James and his daughter, Rachel McCarthy James, published their book The Man from the Train. The authors conducted extensive research into the string of axe murders that occurred in the early 1900s.

Their investigation began with the most well-known case, the Villisca Axe Murders. Based on the murderer’s ability to successfully murder eight victims in a small home without rousing the neighbors, Bill suspected that the killer was very experienced. After additional research, he found similar cases in old newspaper articles and brought Rachel on to assist in the research.

Through their research, the pair uncovered a pattern of similar murders dating back to 1898. They focused on murders that aligned with the M.O. of their suspect, and by comparing the timelines, they identified and isolated family murders that were likely perpetrated by the same killer. After mapping the timelines and suspected murders, they were unable to identify any murders between 1906 and 1909 definitively.

Their book theorizes that the suspect may have been in prison during this period. From 1900 to 1910, they identified eleven cases that they confidently believe can be attributed to a single suspect, along with thirteen additional cases that seem highly probable.

Unsolved Murders

On the night of June 9th, 1911, William and Ruth Hill, along with Ruth’s two children, Philip and Dorothy, were brutally murdered during the night in their family home in Ardenwald, Oregon. All four victims had been murdered in their beds, and the murder weapon — a bloodied axe — was left behind. Following the murders, the perpetrator had moved the victims’ bodies and covered them with sheets or blankets.

Ruth and her daughter showed signs of sexual assault postmortem. The windows of the family home had been covered by the murderer, who hung cloth to conceal the horrors within. The family’s neighbor, Nathan Harvey, was initially charged with committing the murders, but he was absolved and acquitted the following year.

Exactly one month later, in Rainier, Washington, Archie and Nettie Coble were attacked in the middle of the night. Again, the couple had been murdered in their beds with the blunt side of an axe, and Nettie was assaulted postmortem. The bodies were also moved after death, and Archie’s face was covered. Given the similarity in M.O. to the Hill family murders, the authorities and press speculated that the cases were connected.

The killer or killers appeared to go quiet for some time, but the deadly spree was far from over. On the night of September 17th, 1911, the Burnham and Wayne families were attacked in Colorado Springs, Colorado. May Burnham, along with her children Nellie and John, were murdered. Both families had been attacked with the blunt end of an axe; their bodies moved after death, and sheets covered their faces.

Once again, the killer had taken care to cover the windows at some point before or after the murders. The houses were located next door to one another. As with the previous murders, there was no evidence of robbery, and valuables were left undisturbed in the homes.

Though some initially believed there could be multiple murderers in action, many came to suspect a single suspect. Many speculated that the murderer might be traveling via train, which would explain how he was able to navigate between locales and disappear with ease.

On September 30th, the Dawson family was murdered in Monmouth, Illinois. William, his wife, and their twelve-year-old daughter Georgia lived near the railroad line, and they were discovered by members of First United Presbyterian Church when William did not turn up for his janitor shift at the church.

The entire family had been bludgeoned in their beds with a blunt object. The windows were covered, the bodies were moved, and the victims were draped with sheets or blankets. However, unlike the previous killings, the weapon used to kill the Dawson family turned out to be a gas pipe, which authorities found discarded near a railroad line.

Some weeks later, police found a small flashlight in the area, which bore the inscription “Colorado Springs” and the date of “Sept. 4, ’11.” Given the double murders that had occurred earlier that month in Colorado Springs, this lends strongly to the theory that a single suspect was traveling by train and committing these horrific and gruesome murders.

On the night of October 16th, 1911, in Ellsworth, Kansas, William and Pauline Showman, along with their young children Lester, Fern, and Fenton, were murdered in their home with the blunt end of an axe. The family home was located near a railroad line. Once again, all the windows had been covered, and Pauline’s body had been staged in a provocative manner. There was no indication of robbery.

“Billy the Axeman”

Bloodhounds were able to trace the killer’s scent to an intersection of two railway lines, after which the trail went cold. The press was convinced that this was the work of a lone traveling killer and dubbed him “Billy the Axeman.”

Billy the Axeman seemingly took a brief hiatus from killing but returned to his murderous ways the following year. On June 5th, 1912, a young couple was murdered in Paola, Kansas. Rollin and Anna Hudson had recently moved to the area, and when Rollin did not report to work the following day, neighbors forcibly entered the home.

They found Rollin and Anna with severely crushed skulls, the damage caused by repeated blows with a blunt weapon. The screen of a window at the back of the house had been pried off, and the bodies of the victims were covered.

Nothing was stolen from the home. The same night, someone had pried the screen from a window in the Longmeyer family’s home and climbed inside. Mrs. Longmeyer awoke to the sound of breaking glass, and upon being discovered, the suspect fled. The Hudsons and the Longmeyers lived near the intersection of two railway lines.

The Villisca Axe Murders

Perhaps the most famous incident involving an axe murderer is the case of the Villisca Axe Murders. On June 9th, 1912, the Moore family was killed in their home in Villisca, Iowa. Josiah and Sara Moore had four children: Herman, Mary Katherine, Arthur Boyd, and Paul.

On the night of the murders, Lena and Ina Stillinger, ages eleven and eight, were having a sleepover at the Moore house. All eight people were brutally murdered in the middle of the night.

On the morning of June 10th, neighbors grew worried when they hadn’t seen anyone come out of the Moore house. A concerned neighbor alerted Josiah’s brother Ross, who immediately came to investigate. What he found was horrific. He discovered his brother, sister-in-law, nieces and nephews, and the Stillinger girls all dead inside the home.

Henry Horton was Villisca’s local law enforcement officer and the first to arrive at the crime scene. Horton conducted a full search of the house, where he found the bodies of Josiah and Sarah and their four children: Herman, 11; Mary, 10; Arthur, 7; Paul, 5; as well as the two Stillinger sisters.

The bodies of each victim had been so brutally bludgeoned that their faces were described as being ‘beaten to a bloody pulp.’ The murderer had used an axe on each of the victims, which was found in the guest bedroom, propped up against the wall. Strangely, the killer only used the axe blade on Josiah whilst using the handle to bludgeon the rest of the family and the Stillinger sisters.

Josiah had also received the most blows, totaling around 30, and the assailant had done this with such ferocity that there was a gauge mark in the ceiling above Josiah’s body. His face was so severely mangled that he was virtually unrecognizable. This has led to some speculation that Josiah’s murder may have been personal and committed by someone he may have known.

In addition to covering the victims and the windows, all the mirrors in the home were also covered. As with the previous murders in Kansas, the suspect had lit a lamp, removed its chimney, and put it under a piece of furniture.

Once again, nothing of value was taken from the family home. Lena Stillinger was posed in a similar manner to Pauline Showman, one that showed a sexual motivation for the crime. Based on evidence left at the scene, it appeared that the killer had not directly sexually violated Lena’s body but that he may have engaged in a sexual act after posing her. Police used bloodhounds to track the killer’s scent, and once again, the trail went cold at the intersection of two railway lines.

Though several suspects were investigated, including Henry Lee Moore (no relation), who was convicted for the brutal axe murders of his mother and grandmother in December 1912, just six months after the Villisca murders, no one was ever convicted of the killings.

Possible Connected Murders

Between the years 1911 and 1912, Texas and Louisiana were plagued with numerous unsolved axe murders. The M.O. was similar to the Midwestern cases, with families living close to railways being attacked at night with no indication of robbery.

The number of murders is disputed, but most sources agree that there were thirteen families attacked, with a total of 49 victims killed. However, the killings differed in one major way: the Midwestern murders only involved white families, whereas the Texas and Louisiana victims were all black or of mixed race. The press referred to this series of murders as the “Mulatto Axe Murders.”

Author Todd C. Elliott published his work in 2015, asserting that a single murderer was responsible for both the Midwestern murders and the Mulatto Axe Murders. His primary rationale was the similarity in M.O. and the fact that the gaps in the Midwestern murders coincide with the periods of murders in Texas and Louisiana.

However, many speculate that the Mulatto Axe Murders may have been the work of a copycat. At the time of the murders, the term “serial killer” had not yet been coined; if the Midwestern murders and Mulatto Axe Murders were the work of a single individual, he would have been an extremely prolific serial killer indeed.

Potential Suspects

In addition to Henry Lee Moore, who eventually served 36 years in prison for the murders of his mother and grandmother, another potential suspect was a German immigrant named Paul Mueller.

In their 2017 book The Man from the Train, Bill James and Rachel McCarthy point to numerous similarities among the cases they studied. They believe the same killer was responsible for the Villisca Axe Murders but that he only perpetrated one of the Mulatto Axe Murders, while the rest were the work of copycats.

The authors believe that the killer was a sexual sadist with an affinity for young girls, which is consistent with the evidence left in the murders, including the fact that the young girls appear to have been killed last, and some of these victims had defensive wounds. The authors believe the killer was a German immigrant by the name of Paul Mueller.

While it was difficult to gather information on Mueller, Bill and Rachel were able to find some documentation. Mueller claimed to be a veteran of the German military and would have been in his mid-thirties around the start of the murders. He was a talented carpenter and often worked as a lumberjack, which would explain his adeptness with an axe. Mueller was short with a very muscular build, giving him both the strength to commit violent murders with a heavy weapon as well as the stature to climb through windows.

The Jameses also suggest Mueller may be responsible for the infamous Hinterkaifeck Farms case. On March 31st, 1922, the six victims were murdered on the family farm just north of Munich, Germany. The killer had murdered all six victims with an axe, and several of the bodies were stacked in the barn.

It is one of the most horrific and confusing cases in Germany’s history, and the case remains unsolved. Bill and Rachel theorize that Mueller fled the country following the conclusion of the Midwest murder spree in 1912 and that ten years later, he slaughtered the Gruber family in his home country.

Closing Thoughts

The story of “Billy the Axeman” and the trail of unsolved axe murders remains one of the most disturbing episodes of the early twentieth century. Many questions remain unanswered. Was a single individual responsible for all of the murders? What, if any, was the motivation for these seemingly random and senseless murders? Though researchers have provided some interesting theories, it is likely that these questions will never truly be answered.

On a quiet spring afternoon in Kenora, Ontario, a masked man walked into a bank carrying two guns, several empty bags, and a homemade bomb wired to a dead man's switch. The events that followed became one of the strangest and most mysterious crimes in Canadian history.

More than fifty years later, the questions remain. Who was the man behind the mask? Where did he come from? And how is his identity still unknown?

Robbery

On the afternoon of May 10, 1973, the peaceful town of Kenora, Ontario, became the setting for a completely unexpected and bizarre crime. The target was the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce on Main Street1.

Just after 3 p.m., an unidentified man entered the bank. He wore a black balaclava and carried a rifle, a pistol, and a bomb built from six sticks of dynamite strapped to his body, and held a dead man's switch clenched in his teeth2.

If he let go, the bomb would go off.

Unlike most bank robbers, who rely on surprise, speed, and a fast escape, this man had come prepared for a siege. He brought a shoulder bag and three duffel bags for the money, and enough firepower to turn a robbery into a hostage crisis.

The mysterious man wasted no time. He walked into the bank manager's office and demanded money. Surprisingly, the robber also demanded that the manager call the police and tell them about the holdup. He threatened to detonate the dynamite unless police brought him a truck and a driver for his escape.

Police agreed to the demand. Constable Don Milliard bravely volunteered to pose as the getaway driver, walking beside an armed and unpredictable man tethered to a homemade bomb. It was an extraordinary thing to volunteer for.

With a live bomb in play, every movement carried the risk of catastrophe. Bank employees, police, and bystanders were caught in a situation where one wrong decision could kill everyone inside.

When broadcasters at radio station CJRL, which was across the street from the bank, became aware of what was happening, they announced it over the air and warned people to stay away3. However, this had the opposite effect, causing many curious onlookers to descend on the area.

Outside, hundreds of people had gathered on Main Street. Among them was Joe Ralko, who had turned onto the street on his way home from school and felt as though he had stepped into a movie4. But this was no movie; it was a real robbery, with real weapons, real explosives, and a crowd standing far too close.

Explosion on Main Street

As the robber and Constable Milliard moved outside toward the truck, carrying the bags of cash, the standoff reached its grisly conclusion. A police sniper fired, striking the robber and detonating the dynamite5.

The blast killed the robber instantly, while Milliard, who was carrying a heavy duffel bag stuffed with money and partly shielded by it, was injured in the explosion but survived. Approximately $100,000 in cash rained down on Main Street. Nearly all of it was later recovered.

In addition to injuring Constable Milliard and several bystanders, the explosion blew the robber’s body apart, making a physical identification of him all but impossible.

Who Was He?

In the aftermath of the robbery attempt, the focus shifted to identifying the man behind it. In the weeks before the robbery, the man had been living in Kenora under the name "Paul Higgins." Investigators would conclude this was a false name. He checked into the Kenricia Hotel on April 23, 1973, using the Higgins name and a false Toronto address.

Two days later, he apparently took a bus to Winnipeg, leaving behind a steamer trunk marked "P. Higgins." He returned and checked back into the hotel on May 56. In his room, investigators found the remains of several cigar brands and their packages. His wallet held a pair of handcuff keys, $176 in cash, and a receipt from the Kenricia Hotel7. These handful of clues were all that investigators had to go on.

Nineteen-year-old Joe Ralko, a local student who would later write a book about the case, had seen the man in town in the days before the robbery. He recalled the man as being in his 40s, with brown hair and a reddish beard.

For those involved, the questions lingered. Who was the man calling himself Paul Higgins, and why had he come to Kenora with a bomb? The few clues left behind all led to dead ends.

One early suspect was eventually ruled out when DNA from the man's brother failed to match DNA evidence recovered from the scene. That suspect later turned out to be alive and living in France.

To this day, the man’s identity remains a mystery. His remains were buried in an unmarked grave in Kenora.

The Mystery Continues

Over the years, the Kenora bank robbery has become a fascinating piece of Canadian true-crime history. CTV's W5 profiled the case twice — first in 1983, then again in 2023 — proving that interest in the case has remained steady throughout the decades8.

Joe Ralko, who witnessed the aftermath as a teenager, turned the event into a book: The Devil's Gap: The Untold Story of Canada's First Suicide Bomber, published in 20179. He described the robbery as something that stayed with him for decades, partly for how shocking it was, and partly because its central question was never answered10.

More than 50 years later, the case continues to draw interest because of its unresolved nature. The robber’s identity as well as any other secrets he may have had were buried with him in an unmarked grave in Kenora.

Unidentified and At Large

This month, Tales From the Underworld is doing something a little bit different. While most of the cases we cover are tragic and disturbing, we can take some small comfort in knowing that most of the time, those who are guilty are identified and punished.

However, what makes these cases even more unnerving is the fact that those responsible were never identified, and in some cases may still be out there.

Alexander Fedorovich Taran was a beekeeper from Alexandrovskoye, in Russia's Stavropol Krai, who between 2002 and 2005 carried out a series of shootings that killed three men and wounded two more. He acted, prosecutors said, to avenge his two children, a daughter and a son, whom he buried seven years apart.

Caught in 2008, Taran was acquitted at his first trial and later convicted at a second. Russian newspapers came to refer to him as "the Voroshilov Sharpshooter" and "the Stavropol Avenger." This is his story.

Who was Alexander Taran?

Alexander Fedorovich Taran was born on June 28, 1951, in the village of Alexandrovskoye, a rural farming district in Stavropol Krai, southern Russia. It was a quiet community where families made their living through agriculture and manual work. Those who knew Taran described a man who was calm, patient, and dependable, not prone to seeking attention or trouble.

Like most young Soviet men, Taran served in the army after reaching adulthood; the discipline he acquired there remained with him. After his time in the military, Taran returned home, where he worked at the local state farm, or sovkhoz. Over the years, he worked as a zoo technician caring for animals, a fireman, and an inspector. Coworkers remembered someone who rarely complained and was diligent in his work.

When the Soviet Union collapsed in the early 1990s and the state farms closed or reorganized, Taran adapted. Rather than leave the village, he started keeping bees, selling honey and later sunflower oil. It was independent work that suited a man who liked working with his hands.

Taran married a woman named Nadezhda, and together they built a home in Alexandrovskoye and raised two children. Natalia, born in 1974, and Vladimir, born in 1977.

Family Tragedy

Alexander Taran’s seemingly peaceful life would be upended by a series of tragic events. The first of these involved his oldest child, Natalia. She became involved with a young man who was using drugs, and soon became addicted herself. Though her parents tried to help, they were ultimately unable to reach her, and in June 1994, Natalia suffered a severe overdose and was rushed to a hospital in Stavropol Krai in critical condition.

While she was receiving treatment, Natalia suffered complications — allegedly a severe allergic reaction to an injection she received — and died in the hospital. She was just 20 years old.

Taran refused to accept his daughter’s death as a tragic accident. He became convinced that the negligence of the hospital staff directly contributed to Natalia’s death. He focused his anger on the doctor on duty in intensive care, a man named Konoplyankin, who, according to some accounts, had a history of drinking on the job.

Taran took the hospital to court, hoping they would see things as he did. However, the court ultimately cleared Konoplyankin, and no one was held responsible for Natalia's death. Those close to Taran later said he never accepted the verdict and often spoke of how powerless he felt against the system.

Natalia's death broke the family as well as her father's heart. About a year later, Nadezhda left Russia to work in Greece, where reports say she found work caring for the elderly. The move was meant to bring in money, but it also separated the couple during the darkest period of their lives. Nadezhda stayed in Greece for good and, by several accounts, began a new relationship there; she and Taran never formally divorced, but their marriage was effectively over.

Taran remained in Alexandrovskoye, keeping his bees and caring for their surviving child, Vladimir. He found some companionship with a local woman identified in Russian true-crime accounts as Natalia Zadorozhnaya, who had a son, Ivan, from an earlier relationship. Yet despite this, Taran grew increasingly isolated, spending less time with others and more time alone.

For seven years, Taran tried to hold on to what was left of his family, watching with worry as Vladimir struggled with alcohol. He often enlisted his son to help him at the apiary, hoping work and responsibility would steady him. Yet it wouldn’t be enough.

In October 2001, during the village's annual "Village Day" celebration, Vladimir went to a local disco. Late that night, a fight broke out, and in the chaos Vladimir was killed. Witnesses described a large drunken brawl involving several people; by some accounts, he was fatally injured during the struggle, and there may have been no single person who struck the fatal blow. Seven years after burying his daughter, Taran buried his only son.

Authorities opened an investigation and arrested a suspect, Izhayev, a nephew of local businessman Magomed Erkenov. But Izhayev was released, no one was charged, and investigators concluded the death resulted from a mass drunken brawl rather than a targeted attack. The case was eventually closed without a conviction.

For Taran, this was unacceptable. He became convinced that Erkenov, a man with money and connections, had used his influence to shield his nephew. Though this was never proven, in Taran’s mind, the system had failed him once again.

Campaign of Revenge

By the end of 2002, Taran had stopped expecting anything from the justice system. Investigators later alleged that it was around this time he began planning revenge against the people he blamed for destroying his family or for helping the guilty escape. They said he traveled to Mozdok, in the North Caucasus, and illegally obtained two AK-47 rifles, fitting them with homemade suppressors.

The first incident came on New Year's Eve, December 31, 2002. Just fifteen minutes into the new year, someone shattered the windows of Magomed Erkenov's home with automatic gunfire. No one was hurt, and the shooter vanished; with little evidence, police treated it as hooliganism.

Months later, on May 21, 2003, Taran confronted Erkenov directly, shooting him at point-blank range at the gate of his own house. Erkenov was struck multiple times and died at the scene. Investigators had no idea who the gunman was or that more attacks would soon follow.

The Erkenov killing left investigators searching for a motive — possible business disputes or personal feuds — and finding none. The gunman had struck with precision and left almost no clues behind.

Just over three months later, on September 5, 2003, Taran turned to Dr. Sergey Gresev, head physician of the district hospital where Natalia had died in 1994. He fired twice through the kitchen window; one bullet hit the doctor in the shoulder. Gresev survived after a long recovery but was left permanently disabled.

Six weeks after that, on October 20, 2003, Taran shot Oleg Tanchik, a 38-year-old senior officer who worked in economic crimes. Tanchik was hit multiple times outside his home and did not survive.

By now, fear had spread through the district. On June 21, 2004, Taran killed again. Vladimir Shtan, head of the Aleksandrovsky district's criminal investigations division, was gunned down at his own gate just as Erkenov had been. Shtan was now the third person killed.

After the murder of Shtan, the shootings stopped for more than a year, and people wondered whether the gunman had disappeared. Then, on November 27, 2005, Andrei Radchenko, the district's traffic-police commander, became the next target.

Five months earlier, Radchenko had pulled over Taran's aging Volga; when Taran refused a sobriety test, his car was impounded. Prosecutors later argued that this landed Radchenko on Taran's list. Radchenko was seriously wounded but survived.

Investigation

For more than two years, a series of carefully planned shootings had left three dead and two wounded. Eventually, investigators came to suspect the attacks were connected. The patterns were similar: the gunman appeared without warning, fired with precision, and vanished.

There were no fingerprints, no eyewitnesses, and no known motive tying the victims together. Detectives examined potential organized crime ties, business disputes, corruption, and the possibility of a shooter with military training, eventually reaching a dead end each time.

Then, in 2008, an unexpected break in the case occurred. A villager who had been walking through woods near Taran's property found something wrapped in an old bathrobe: an AK-47 with a homemade suppressor. Ballistics linked it to several of the shootings.

Because the suppressor had been made by hand, investigators traced it to a local metalworker, who recognized his own work and remembered that Alexander Taran had ordered it, having claimed he needed a nozzle for a gas burner, the kind of tool a beekeeper might use to smoke his hives. It was a plausible explanation, and it gave police their first direct link.

Upon a search of Taran's property, authorities recovered a homemade gas pistol; though not tied to the shootings, it kept their focus fixed on him. A strand of hair on one of the rifles was matched to Taran, and a friend of his came forward with a second AK-47 and admitted he had been holding it for Taran.

Forensic analysis tied both weapons to the shootings. According to later accounts, Taran's stepson, Ivan, also told investigators that Taran had test-fired one of the rifles at an old quarry; Taran reportedly never forgave him for this betrayal.

Conviction

Following his arrest, the 57-year-old beekeeper initially confessed, admitting the attacks were driven by his belief that the justice system had failed him after his children's deaths. Later, though, he stopped cooperating, withdrew his confession, and maintained his innocence; his lawyers challenged the legality of how the confession had been obtained.

The case went before a jury at the Stavropol Regional Court. Prosecutors presented the two AK-47 rifles and the hand-made suppressor, the metalworker's testimony, the hair evidence, and presented the motive for the attacks, arguing every victim was in some way connected back to the deaths of Taran's children or the investigations that followed.

The defense countered that the case rested on assumptions rather than proof, that no eyewitness had ever seen Taran shoot anyone, and that suspicion alone was not enough.

On May 29, 2009, the jury acquitted him. The verdict stunned investigators and prosecutors, who quickly appealed. On September 3, 2009, the Supreme Court of Russia ruled that procedural errors had marred the trial, overturned the acquittal, and ordered a retrial.

On December 4, 2009, a second jury convicted Taran, and on December 9, he was sentenced to 23 years in a strict-regime penal colony and ordered to pay 1,050,000 rubles to the surviving victims' families. Taran never admitted guilt; he and his lawyer, Vyacheslav Savin, appealed, but on March 16, 2010, the Supreme Court upheld the conviction.

Aftermath

After Alexander Taran’s story was widely publicized, newspapers began referring to him as "The Stavropol Avenger," and, more enduringly, "The Voroshilov Sharpshooter," after the vengeful pensioner in the 1999 Russian film Voroshilov Sharpshooter, whose hero takes justice into his own hands when the law fails his family.

Senator Vladimir Lukin condemned what Taran had done but warned that in a country where trust in the courts and police was low and corruption real, more "Voroshilov Sharpshooters" would appear unless changes in the justice system were made.

Alexander Taran remains in custody, serving the sentence handed down in 2009; his name is still one of the most glaring examples of what can happen when personal tragedy, perceived injustice, and revenge become entangled together after faith in the system runs out.

Background

One of the world's most prolific serial killers of the modern era and Brazil's most notorious killer of all time, mainly — if not exclusively — killed other criminals. Pedro Rodrigues Filho, once described as "the perfect psychopath," was responsible for at least 71 murders, though he claimed responsibility for more than 100.

More than half of those 71 murders were committed while he was in prison, where he regularly killed other inmates he deemed deserving of death. His habit of killing fellow criminals earned him the nickname the "Brazilian Dexter," and some sources claim his case served as part of the real-life inspiration for the books and TV show about the fictional Miami forensics expert and vigilante.

However, unlike Dexter, Pedro Rodrigues Filho was very real — yet his story reads far more like fiction.

A Dark Beginning

Pedro Rodrigues Filho was born on October 29, 1954, in Santa Rita do Sapucaí, Brazil. Though the town is now known as "Vale da Eletrônica" (Electronic Valley), this municipality in southernmost Minas Gerais was a far less technological agricultural town in the early 1950s.

Rodrigues was born on a farm, but his early years were anything but idyllic. The first of seven children, his entrance into the world was marked by the violence that would follow him for the rest of his life.

Rodrigues was reportedly born with a skull injury, a horrific result, by his own account, of his father drunkenly kicking his heavily pregnant mother in the stomach. Pedro Rodrigues Sr., a night security guard at a local school, had a habit of drinking himself into an angry and violent state, and his wife Manuela was usually the target of his violent outbursts.

That dynamic did not make for a safe or loving home. The warning signs in young Pedro began early. At just 13, during a fight with his cousin, he was punched in the face. It was the first time he reportedly felt an urge to kill, and were it not for relatives intervening, he might have succeeded.

Pedro had pulled a knife and pushed his cousin toward a sugar-cane press, and the cousin very nearly lost an arm. From that day on, Pedro would begin to follow his darkest impulses.

"Pedrinho Matador"

At age 14, Rodrigues took his grandfather's shotgun and made his way to city hall. He had come for the deputy mayor, whom he blamed for firing his father over false allegations of stealing food from the school kitchen. He shot the deputy mayor in front of city hall, then killed the security guard whom he believed was the actual thief.

After these first two murders, Rodrigues fled to Mogi das Cruzes in São Paulo. Rather than lay low, he wasted no time robbing local drug dens and killing the traffickers he came across. He quickly earned a fearsome reputation, with local media dubbing him "Pedrinho Matador," or "Little Pedro the Killer."

Rodrigues later met Maria Aparecida Olympia, known locally as Botinha, the widow of a drug lord. The two moved in together, and Rodrigues took over her late husband's operation. Now running a local gang, he killed three rivals from other crews. Not long after, Botinha learned she was pregnant with his child.

Tragically, a rival gang leader had her killed shortly afterward. They tried to kill Rodrigues too, but he escaped and swore revenge on every member of the rival gang.

Revenge came mercilessly, and with a skill beyond his years. He methodically tracked down each member of the rival crew, killing them one by one; anyone who may have had a hand in Botinha's death was marked. By some accounts, he even crashed a wedding to take out three targets he knew would be attending. Still underage, Rodrigues was already a force few could reckon with.

Imprisonment and Parole

On May 24, 1973, 18-year-old Rodrigues was arrested. He is officially recognized as responsible for 71 murders, though he later claimed more than 100. His sentence would eventually climb past 400 years. However, under Brazilian law at the time, the maximum anyone could serve consecutively was 30 years.

Being locked up did not stop him: during one transport of handcuffed inmates, guards opened the doors to find another prisoner dead. Rodrigues offered a simple explanation: the man was a rapist, and he deserved to die.

Behind bars, Rodrigues is said to have killed roughly 47 fellow inmates, each of whom, in his telling, deserved it. He insisted he never killed an innocent person and that revenge and a rough moral code drove him to commit his crimes. This supposed code is why many called him the "Brazilian Dexter," after the vigilante antihero of the hit TV show.

His prison killings pushed his nominal sentence toward 400 years, but the 30-year cap held: he was released in 2007 after roughly three decades inside.

There is debate about whether or not Rodrigues killed his own father. By his own account, he did, stabbing him 22 times in prison. In a later interview, he said, "He stabbed my mother twenty-one times, so I stabbed him twenty-two."

A more sensational rumor — that he ate his father's heart — Rodrigues denied, saying only that he bit a piece and threw it away. Other accounts hold that his father died years later of a respiratory illness. The details remain contested.

"Ex Matador"

After his 2007 release, Rodrigues moved to Fortaleza and took work as a night watchman. He was arrested again in September 2011 on charges of rioting and deprivation of liberty tied to his earlier detention in São Paulo. Sentenced to eight years, he was released after seven for good behavior. It was his final arrest, and afterward, his life took a surprising turn.

In 2018, immediately after his release, Rodrigues publicly announced a change of heart. He declared himself retired from vigilantism and vowed to leave crime behind entirely. He started a YouTube channel, "Pedrinho Ex Matador" — "Ex-Killer Little Pedro" — where he told his story, weighed in on high-profile cases, and, above all, urged others not to follow his path. Violence and crime, he insisted, were never the answer.

Through 2023, Rodrigues appeared to be keeping his word. Then, on March 5, 2023, his life came to a sudden end. Outside a family member's home in Mogi das Cruzes, three assailants in a black car opened fire; one got out and slashed his throat, nearly decapitating him.

The attackers fled, and though there were eyewitnesses, no suspects were ever identified or charged. At 68, Pedro Rodrigues Filho was dead, having perhaps left the world a different man than the one he'd been for most of his life.

Closing Thoughts

Pedro Rodrigues Filho remains, and likely always will be, Brazil's most prolific serial killer. Many see nothing more than a violent criminal who dressed up revenge as justice. Others cast him as a kind of antihero, a vigilante who killed only those who had it coming. Whatever your view, Rodrigues seemingly underwent a change of heart after a lifetime behind bars, becoming a passionate anti-crime advocate until his own violent death in 2023.

Brazil’s "Real-life Dexter" leaves behind decidedly mixed feelings, but one thing is certain: Pedro Rodrigues Filho will not soon be forgotten.

Background

The March 1981 killing of Klaus Grabowski by Marianne Bachmeier is one of the most notable and high-profile instances of vigilantism in the history of West Germany. The incident drew considerable attention due to the sensational and shocking nature of the crime.

Grabowski, a convicted sex offender, was on trial for the abduction, assault, and murder of Bachmeier’s 7-year-old daughter, Anna. On the third day of the trial, Bachmeier shot Grabowski to death in front of a stunned courtroom. She would later serve three years in prison for her actions.

Opinions differed as to whether the punishment was too lenient or too harsh considering the circumstances. Many sympathized with the grieving mother and felt that justice had been done. More than 45 years later, the case remains relevant to understanding vigilante justice.

A Troubled Childhood

Born on June 3, 1950, Marianne Bachmeier had a difficult childhood from the very beginning. After World War II, her parents had fled from East Prussia to the small town of Sarstedt near Hildesheim in Lower Saxony, West Germany, where Marianne was raised. Marianne’s father had reportedly served in the Waffen-SS.

Marianne was raised in a devout, conservative, and deeply religious home. Her father was a stern man and a heavy drinker who spent more time at the local bar than at home. She would later remember the household as deeply unhappy — a tension that later ended in her parents' divorce.

When Marianne was a teen, her mother remarried. Her new stepfather was strict and authoritative, and the constant arguments between them eventually led her mother to put Marianne out of the house.

In 1966, at sixteen, Marianne became pregnant. Knowing she couldn't raise a child, she placed the baby for adoption. Two years later, at eighteen, she became pregnant by her boyfriend; she later said she was also raped shortly before the birth of the second baby. Again, she placed the child up for adoption. Both children found homes with other families.

Struggling Mother

In her early twenties, Marianne was working at a pub called Tipasa in Lübeck and dating the manager. At 22, she became pregnant for the third time. This time she chose to keep the baby. Her daughter, Anna, was born on November 14, 1972.

Marianne struggled to raise Anna alone, often having to bring her to the pub while she worked. Because of her lack of support, Anna was treated more like an adult than a child by her mother and was frequently left to care for herself while Marianne worked. According to friends of Marianne, Anna was a vibrant child but, due to circumstances, she, like her mother, had an unhappy and turbulent childhood.

Murder of Anna Bachmeier

On May 5, 1980, after an argument with her mother, seven-year-old Anna decided to skip school. At some point that day, she was abducted by Klaus Grabowski, a 35-year-old butcher who lived nearby. Anna was familiar with Grabowski, having visited him before to play with his cats.

Grabowski held her at his home for several hours and sexually assaulted her, then strangled her with a pair of his fiancée's tights. Afterward, he bound her body, packed it into a box, and left it on the shore of a canal.

Grabowski was already a convicted sex offender who had previously served time for assaulting two girls. In 1976, Grabowski agreed to chemical castration. However, he later attempted to reverse the procedure through the use of hormone treatment.

Grabowski’s fiancée turned him in to police. After his arrest, Grabowski tried to shift the blame onto Anna, claiming he had not abused her and that Anna had tried to extort money from him to keep quiet; he said he killed her because he feared returning to prison.

Courtroom Killing

On the third day of Grabowski’s trial, March 6, 1981, Marianne smuggled a .22-caliber Beretta pistol into Room 157 of the Lübeck District Court. As Grabowski waited, she drew the weapon and fired between six and eight shots. Six rounds struck Grabowski, killing him instantly.

Bachmeier then lowered the gun and was arrested without resistance. Officers later testified they heard her say she had wanted to face him: "Unfortunately, I only got the pig from behind." During a later court-ordered handwriting test, Bachmeier wrote, "I did it for you, Anna.”

The shooting became one of the most famous cases of vigilante justice in West German history. It drew intense media coverage, with television crews arriving from around the world. Public opinion split sharply: many saw a grieving mother who took justice into her own hands, and she received gifts and support while in custody; while some saw a dangerous vigilante who had defied the legal process.

To help cover her legal costs, Marianne sold her story to the news magazine Stern for 100,000 Deutsche marks (roughly $58,500). After Stern published her life story, which included the adoptions of her first two children, some readers began to question how blameless she had been, given the difficult life Anna had led.

Meanwhile, the West German public debated how Grabowski, a convicted child sex offender, had been permitted to reverse his voluntary chemical castration.

Trial and Sentencing

Bachmeier was first charged with premeditated murder. Prosecutors later reduced the charge to manslaughter, weighing her grief and mental state at the time of the killing. After 28 days of trial, she was convicted on March 2, 1983, of manslaughter and unlawful possession of a firearm.

The court accepted the defense argument that the act was not premeditated, though a subsequent documentary would later allege that Bachmeier rehearsed the shooting in the basement of the pub where she worked. She was sentenced to six years in prison and released on probation after serving three.

Aftermath

After her release, Marianne married a teacher in 1985 and moved with him to Lagos, Nigeria, where he taught at a German school. The couple divorced in 1990, and Marianne moved to Sicily, working as an aide in a Palermo hospice. While there, she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and returned to Germany.

In 1994, thirteen years after the shooting, she gave a radio interview and published her autobiography. On September 21, 1995, she appeared on the German talk show Fliege and said she had shot Grabowski to stop him from spreading lies about Anna.

Marianne Bachmeier died on September 17, 1996, at age 46, of pancreatic cancer in a Lübeck hospital. To her dying day, Marianne Bachmeier expressed no remorse. She was buried beside her daughter, Anna, in Burgtor Cemetery in Lübeck.

Over the decades, the case has inspired numerous plays, films, documentaries, and books. Her story is one that resonates with many people: a grieving mother who sought justice for her daughter no matter what it cost her.

The killing of Jeffrey Doucet by Gary Plauché in March 1984 is a prime example of how an otherwise upstanding and law-abiding individual could be driven to take the law into his own hands.

When Plauché learned that his son, Jody, had been sexually abused and abducted by a man he trusted, the anger, betrayal, and grief pushed him over the edge and led him to shoot his son’s abuser inside the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport as live news cameras were rolling.

In the aftermath of the shooting, many people sympathized with Gary. Despite the shocking nature of the crime, many could understand the motivation behind it. The trial and subsequent court decision were also controversial and resulted in the case becoming one of the most notable examples of American vigilante justice.

Who was Gary Plauché?

Gary Plauché was born on November 10, 1945, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. After a stint in the U.S. Air Force, where he reached the rank of Staff Sergeant, he returned to civilian life and worked as an equipment salesman and, at one point, as a cameraman for a local television station — a detail that would take on a grim irony the night his own violent act was broadcast on the news.

He was, by all accounts, an ordinary father until February 1984.

Ultimate Betrayal

In 1983, Gary’s 11-year-old son, Jody, began taking karate lessons from a 25-year-old instructor named Jeffery Doucet. Doucet became a close and trusted friend of the family; Jody once described him as "all of our best friends." However, Doucet horrifically betrayed that trust when he began sexually abusing Jody. The abuse continued in secret until one fateful day in February 1984.

On February 14, 1984, Doucet picked Jody up, telling the boy's mother, June, they would be back shortly. Instead, Doucet took Jody across the country to a motel in Anaheim, California, where — according to Jody's later account — the abuse that had reportedly gone on for months continued.

Doucet's plan included shaving his beard and changing Jody's appearance to evade law enforcement while hiding their true identities. The plan was to pass Jody off as Doucet's son and conceal his tracks.

Jody, the subject of a nationwide search, was found after Doucet allowed him to place a collect call to his mother. California police arrested Doucet without incident on February 29, 1984, and Jody was returned home to Louisiana on March 1.

For Gary Plauché, learning the details of what his son had endured was emotionally devastating. The horrifying truth of Jody's sexual abuse left Plauché in a state of unimaginable horror. His world was shattered, and the pursuit of justice would soon become his singular focus.

In the days that followed, a former colleague from WBRZ passed along a critical piece of information: the time Doucet would be flown back to Baton Rouge to face charges. On the evening of March 16, 1984, as officers escorted a handcuffed Doucet through Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport, Plauché waited at a bank of payphones, his face hidden by a baseball cap and sunglasses, pretending to make a call.

A WBRZ news crew had positioned itself to film Doucet's arrival. As he passed, Plauché drew a small handgun and fired a single shot into the side of Doucet's head at point-blank range. The camera caught all of it live. As officers wrestled Plauché down — several of them knew him — one can be heard asking, "Why, Gary, why?"

After slipping into a coma, Doucet died the following day.

Legal Proceedings

Plauché was initially charged with second-degree murder, but the community rallied around him. Strangers on the street, patrons of the bar where he had spent his darkest days, and a local riverboat captain named Murray Curry who helped raise a defense fund. Much of the public had, as one account put it, already acquitted him in their hearts.

After agreeing to a plea bargain, Plauché pleaded no contest to a reduced charge of manslaughter. Citing psychiatric testimony that Plauché had been temporarily unable to tell right from wrong, and reasoning that prison "would not help anyone" and that Plauché posed virtually no risk of reoffending, the judge handed down a seven-year suspended sentence, five years of probation, and 300 hours of community service.

He would serve no jail time. This decision shocked some and pleased others, further fueling the ongoing debate about whether Plauché was a hero or a reckless vigilante.

Aftermath

Gary Plauché lived the remainder of his life quietly out of the public eye. He suffered strokes in his later years and passed away in 2014 at age 68. His obituary remembered a man who found beauty in life, made those around him laugh, and was, to many, a hero.

Jody Plauché took a different path. Rather than let the darkest days of his childhood define him, he became a sexual-assault counselor and abuse-prevention speaker, worked with anti-violence programs, and in 2019 published a memoir, Why, Gary, Why? The Jody Plauché Story. The book helps parents protect their children and shows other survivors that they too can move forward.

Around the 40th anniversary of the shooting in 2024, Jody spoke publicly again about his father calling him, without hesitation, "The greatest dad of all time."

The extraordinary case of Gary Plauché is one that many people can relate to. A loving father who was heartbroken by the betrayal and systematic abuse of his son did what he believed was necessary at the time.

Though his actions were certainly outside the boundaries of the law, the outpouring of sympathy and public support that followed demonstrated that when it comes to protecting one’s children, one must do what is necessary, no matter the cost.

For years, the shadow of Ken McElroy loomed large over the tiny town of Skidmore, located in northwest Missouri. McElroy was a violent bully and criminal who had been indicted more than 20 times over the years for various crimes, yet somehow he always managed to go free.

Then one hot July day in 1981, McElroy’s long campaign of fear and intimidation came to a violent end as he was gunned down while sitting in his pickup truck. The shooting happened in front of dozens of people, and yet, no one claimed to have seen anything. Not one of the witnesses would identify the shooters. Today, the murder of Ken McElroy remains unsolved.

The Town Bully

Ken Rex McElroy was born on June 16, 1934, the fifteenth of sixteen children. His parents, Tony and Mabel, were poor tenant farmers who moved from place to place between Kansas and the Ozarks before eventually settling outside Skidmore, Missouri. The town is located in the northwest corner of Missouri and, at the time, had a population of fewer than 500 residents.

By the time Ken was a teenager, he had already developed a nasty reputation that would follow him for the rest of his life. He dropped out of school at age 15, while in the eighth grade, and quickly became known in the area as a cattle rustler, thief, and troublemaker.

Throughout his life, McElroy was accused of dozens of serious crimes. These accusations included assault, child molestation, statutory rape, arson, animal cruelty, hog and cattle rustling, burglary, and theft involving grain, gasoline, alcohol, antiques, and livestock. Over the years, McElroy was indicted 21 times. Yet he escaped conviction every time but the last.

This became a major part of his legend in Skidmore. It was not just that McElroy was accused of crime after crime. It was that, no matter how serious the accusation, he always seemed to walk away free.

Witnesses became afraid. Victims hesitated. People changed their stories. Some refused to testify altogether. Many said this was because McElroy intimidated them. He was known to follow people, park outside their homes, and watch them for hours. To the people of Skidmore, the message was clear: if you crossed Ken McElroy, he would not forget it.

Reign of Fear

By the 1970s, McElroy’s name had become synonymous with fear in Nodaway County. He was often armed, openly confrontational, and quick to make threats. If someone accused him, he intimidated them. If someone testified, he followed them. If the law came after him, the case somehow collapsed.

McElroy had at least 17 children by multiple wives and other young women and girls, but the sheer number of children was less important than the pattern that surrounded his life. His relationships, his disputes, and his criminal accusations all seemed to carry the same theme: power through fear. And for more than two decades, that fear worked. Many Skidmore residents believed the courts had become useless against him.

One of the darkest parts of McElroy’s life involved Trena McCloud, who would later become his last wife. McElroy met Trena when she was only 12 years old and in the eighth grade. He was 35. What followed was a deeply disturbing pattern of abuse, coercion, and intimidation.

According to accounts of the case, McElroy raped Trena repeatedly. When her parents opposed the relationship, McElroy allegedly terrorized the family into submission. The McCloud family’s home was burned down, and their dog was shot.

Trena became pregnant at 14. After leaving school in the ninth grade, she moved into the home McElroy shared with his third wife, Alice. McElroy later divorced Alice and married Trena. Many believed the marriage was a way for him to avoid statutory rape charges, since Trena was the key witness in the case against him.

In June 1973, McElroy was indicted on charges of arson, assault, and statutory rape. He was arrested, booked, arraigned, and then released on $2,500 bail. For Trena and her baby, however, freedom from McElroy was still out of reach. They were placed in foster care at a home in Maryville, Missouri, but McElroy soon found them.

He reportedly sat outside the foster home for hours, staring at the house and making his presence impossible to ignore. Then came one of the most chilling threats connected to the entire case: McElroy allegedly told the foster family he would trade “girl for girl” to get his child back, because he knew where their biological daughter went to school and which bus route she took.

Additional charges were filed against him, but once again, this did little to slow McElroy’s threats and intimidation. Even after Trena gave birth, McElroy’s control over her did not stop. Just sixteen days after the baby was born, Trena and Alice ran to Trena’s parents’ home, hoping to get away from him. But according to court records, McElroy tracked them down and brought them back. Later, while the McClouds were away, their home was allegedly set on fire again, and their new dog was shot.

For many in Skidmore, the McCloud family’s suffering was another reminder of what happened when anyone tried to stand up to Ken McElroy.

A Pattern of Violence

On July 27, 1976, Romaine Henry, a farmer from Skidmore, claimed McElroy shot him twice with a shotgun after Henry confronted him for firing weapons on his property. McElroy was later charged with assault with intent to kill. The accusation was serious. Henry had been shot, and he named McElroy as the person responsible.

As the case dragged on, Henry said McElroy parked outside his home at least 100 times before trial. It was the kind of intimidation people in Skidmore had come to expect.

At trial, McElroy denied being at the scene. Two raccoon hunters testified that they were with him away from Henry’s property on the day of the shooting. McElroy’s attorney, Richard Gene McFadin, focused heavily on Henry’s credibility. Under questioning, Henry was forced to admit that he had concealed a petty criminal conviction from more than three decades earlier. In the end, McElroy walked free.

Reports later claimed that McElroy had stalked and intimidated members of the jury before the trial. It was also reported that a barn owned by the judge was burned down. Whether every rumor was true or not, the effect was the same. The people of Skidmore believed that McElroy had once again escaped accountability, and that belief made him seem even more untouchable.

The incident that finally brought Skidmore to its breaking point began in 1980 at a local grocery store owned by Ernest “Bo” Bowenkamp and his wife, Lois. Bo Bowenkamp was 70 years old. He and Lois were ordinary small-town business owners, the kind of people who should have been able to spend their later years running their store in peace. Instead, they became the center of the conflict that would eventually lead to McElroy’s death.

The trouble reportedly began when one of McElroy’s daughters got into an argument with a store clerk named Evelyn Sumy. The girl was allegedly accused of trying to steal candy. It was a small incident, the kind of thing that might have ended with a warning in any other town. But with Ken McElroy, small disputes rarely stayed small.

McElroy began stalking and harassing the Bowenkamp family. Eventually, he confronted Bo Bowenkamp in the back of the store while holding a shotgun. During the confrontation, McElroy shot Bowenkamp in the neck. Miraculously, Bo survived. This time, it seemed that McElroy had finally gone too far.

He was arrested and charged with first-degree assault, a charge that could have carried a life sentence. For a town that had watched him escape serious punishment again and again, the Bowenkamp case looked like the moment the system might finally work.

In June 1981, McElroy was convicted of second-degree assault. He was sentenced to two years in prison. For Skidmore, the conviction should have brought relief. Instead, it brought fear. McElroy was released on bond pending appeal.

Despite the conviction, McElroy did not fade into the background. If anything, he carried himself as though nothing had changed — as though he still believed no one had the power to stop him. On June 30, 1981, McElroy appeared at the D&G Tavern, a local bar in Skidmore. He was armed with an M1 Garand rifle with a bayonet attached. While there, he reportedly threatened Bo Bowenkamp.

To the people in town, this was not just another ugly scene. It was a warning. McElroy had been convicted of shooting a 70-year-old grocer in the neck, had been released on bond, and was now allegedly threatening the same man again. The question hanging over Skidmore was no longer whether McElroy was dangerous. That had long been answered.

The question now was whether anyone would stop him before someone else was hurt or killed.

Town Meeting

On July 10, 1981, many Skidmore residents were expecting McElroy to appear in court again — this time for a hearing to revoke the bond that had kept him free since the D&G Tavern incident. But when the court date arrived, they learned that McElroy’s attorney had won a continuance, and the hearing had been rescheduled. For a town already exhausted by years of threats, delays, and failed prosecutions, the news felt like yet another setback. Frustrated and frightened, residents gathered at the Legion Hall to discuss what could be done.

Nodaway County Sheriff Danny Estes attended the meeting and reportedly advised the citizens not to confront McElroy directly. He suggested they consider forming a neighborhood watch. But for many people in Skidmore, that answer must have felt painfully hollow. They had already seen the courts fail them. They had seen witnesses grow too afraid to speak.

Soon word spread that McElroy and his wife, Trena, were at the D&G Tavern. Many of the people at the meeting began making their way toward the tavern. The place filled with townspeople. McElroy sat inside drinking. Eventually, he bought a six-pack of beer, left the bar, and climbed into his red pickup truck with Trena beside him.

What happened next would forever be remembered in Skidmore.

The Killing of Ken McElroy

As McElroy sat in his truck, shots rang out. McElroy was hit twice by two different-sized bullets. The use of different types of ammunition suggested that at least two firearms were involved. Some accounts described gunfire coming from different directions. Trena was sitting beside him when the shooting began. She scrambled from the truck, screaming, covered in blood. A man helped her away from the vehicle.

When it was over, Ken McElroy was dead. There were dozens of people present. Estimates place the number of potential witnesses somewhere between 30 and 46. It was broad daylight. This was not a hidden murder in a dark alley. It happened on the main street of a small town where everyone knew everyone.

And yet, when investigators began to ask questions, the answer was silence. Nobody saw the shooter. Nobody could identify the gunmen. Nobody admitted knowing anything. And nobody had bothered to call for help.

After years of living under McElroy’s shadow, Skidmore had closed ranks. Whether out of fear, loyalty, relief, or a shared belief that justice had already been served, the town refused to turn in his killers.

Wall of Silence

Despite the number of witnesses present at the time of the shooting, the case remained unsolved. It was confirmation that the residents of Skidmore both feared and detested McElroy, and that he had finally gotten what was coming to him.

Trena McElroy later accused Del Clement of being one of the shooters. However, Clement was never charged, and he denied any involvement until his death in 2009. Prosecutors declined to press charges, and an extensive federal investigation also failed to produce an indictment.

Many believed the residents had simply decided that the system had failed them for too long, and that it was up to them to finally put an end to McElroy’s reign of terror. Missouri-based journalist Steve Booher later described the sentiment of many townspeople in a simple phrase: “He needed killing.”

Aftermath

Ken McElroy was buried at Memorial Park Cemetery in St. Joseph, Missouri. But his death did not end the controversy.

On July 9, 1984, Trena McElroy filed a $5 million wrongful death lawsuit. The lawsuit named the Town of Skidmore, Nodaway County, Sheriff Danny Estes, Skidmore Mayor Steve Peters, and Del Clement, the man Trena accused of being involved in the shooting.

The suit was settled out of court for $17,600. No one admitted guilt. The settlement was reportedly made to avoid the cost of continued legal fees. Trena later remarried and moved to Lebanon, Missouri. She died of cancer on January 24, 2012.

As for Skidmore, the town would never fully escape the shadow of the McElroy case. The story has been revisited again and again: in Harry N. MacLean’s Edgar Award-winning 1988 book In Broad Daylight and the 1991 television film it inspired, in the 2019 documentary series No One Saw a Thing, and most recently in KENREX, the Olivier Award-winning one-man play that opened in New York in April 2026. But what continues to fascinate people is not just the killing itself — it is what the case reveals about fear, justice, silence, and what can happen when a community feels the law has failed them.

More than four decades later, the death of Ken McElroy remains one of the most infamous alleged acts of vigilante justice in American history.

His story has been told and retold because it does not fit neatly into a simple moral category. McElroy was not an innocent man randomly gunned down. He was a convicted assailant and a man accused of a long history of violence, intimidation, and abuse. At the same time, he was also a murder victim, killed in public by people who were never brought before a court.

That is what makes the case so unsettling.

It is not just a story about a criminal. It is not just a story about a killing. It is a story about a town pushed so far that violence became its final answer. Ken McElroy was known as “the town bully,” but by the end, that title no longer belonged only to him. The real bully in Skidmore may have been fear itself. Fear of McElroy. Fear of retaliation. Fear that the courts would fail again. Fear that speaking up would only bring more violence.

To this day, no one has been charged with the killing of Ken Rex McElroy.

In October 2025, former rock star turned convicted pedophile Ian Watkins was found dead at HM Prison Wakefield, where the disgraced former frontman was serving a 29-year sentence for numerous crimes against children. In total, four men have been charged in relation to Watkins’ death, including two inmates who have been charged with murder and weapons possession.

The troubling story of Ian Watkins highlights how he used his fame to manipulate fans and gain access to vulnerable children. It also shows a disturbing level of negligence by law enforcement agencies who could have stopped Watkins years before his eventual arrest had they only taken seriously the numerous tips they had received about his crimes.

Early Life and Rise to Fame

Ian David Karslake Watkins was born on July 30, 1977, in Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales. When Ian was around five years old, his father passed away. A few years later, his mother married a church minister, and the family moved to Pontypridd, another South Wales town.

After high school, Watkins attended the University of Wales, Newport, and graduated with a degree in graphic design. Beyond the classroom, he showed a strong interest in music — rock and metal bands, especially from the United States. He studied how they performed and connected with audiences; one group he later cited as a major influence was Faith No More.

Watkins worked as a graphic designer before finding success in music. — he would later use these skills to create artwork and merchandise for his music projects. — In the early 90s, Watkins, along with friends Lee Gaze and Mike Lewis, formed several short-lived bands. In the mid-1990s, Watkins played drums in a small local hardcore band called Public Disturbance. The group played modest venues and released its debut album in 1998.

While still a member of Public Disturbance, Watkins and Lee Gaze formed the band Lostprophets in 1997. In 1998, Watkins left Public Disturbance to focus exclusively on his new band. As lead singer and frontman, Watkins became the driving force behind the band.

The group began to gain recognition following the release of their debut album, The Fake Sound of Progress, in 2000, which reached a much wider audience when it was re-released in 2001. The band’s second album, Start Something (2004), propelled them into mainstream success. While Liberation Transmission (2006) reached number one on the UK Albums Chart, and The Betrayed (2010) and Weapons (2012) kept them touring internationally, playing packed venues and major festivals far beyond Wales.

With that success came a strong public image. Watkins was seen as confident, energetic, and bold — on stage and in interviews. Fans admired not just the music, but the personality leading it.

Warnings Ignored

Behind that image, though, concerns had already started to reach the authorities. In December 2008, Joanne Mjadzelics — a former girlfriend of Watkins — first reported him to police, telling officers about text messages in which Watkins described his desire to abuse children. An early investigation was closed for what was described as potentially “malicious.”

Mjadzelics kept going back — she would later face charges herself over material connected to Watkins, and be cleared of all of them in January 2015 after arguing she had been gathering evidence to expose him.

The pattern did not stop. Between 2008 and 2012, multiple reports reached authorities — claims that he was contacting underage girls online, that he possessed indecent images of children, and that he was encouraging others to participate in abuse. Some reports came from people who had seen the messages firsthand.

These failures were later officially documented: the Independent Police Complaints Commission found that officers failed multiple times between 2008 and 2012 to act on reports about Watkins, and a 2016 IPCC report recommended disciplinary proceedings against three South Wales Police detectives.

All the while, Watkins’ life continued without interruption. The band released music, toured, and kept its place in the industry. Fans continued to support him, unaware of what was happening behind the scenes.

Arrest and Charges

After receiving information that Watkins was smuggling cocaine and methamphetamine from Los Angeles to Wales, police arrested him on drug charges in June 2012. Watkins posted bail and was released. He was arrested again later that year in November on drug charges and an allegation that he possessed an obscene image of a child. He pleaded not guilty to this charge and was once again released on bail.

On November 14, 2012, Watkins performed what would be his final show with Lostprophets in Newport, Wales. The crowd that night saw the same energetic performer they had always known.

On December 17, 2012, Watkins was arrested for the third time that year — and this time investigators were building a full case. Police searched his home in Pontypridd, seizing computers, phones, and storage devices.

What investigators found included hundreds of indecent images and videos involving children; messages showing he had arranged and engaged in sexual activity involving minors; evidence he had attempted sexual acts against very young children; communications directing others to carry out abuse and record it; and proof he had filmed and stored some of it himself.

Two days later, on December 19, 2012, he was charged with multiple serious offenses, including the attempted rape of an 11-month-old child, sexual assault of a child, causing or inciting sexual activity with a child, and possession, creation, and distribution of indecent images of children.

Trial and Sentencing

Watkins denied the accusations for nearly a year, and a full trial was planned at Cardiff Crown Court. Then, on November 26, 2013, just before the jury was to be sworn in, he changed his pleas, admitting 13 offenses, including the attempted rape of a baby.

Watkins had not acted alone. Two young mothers — identified in court only as B and P, to protect the identities of their children — were convicted alongside him. The court heard that Watkins used his fame and influence to draw in young female fans and then manipulated them into offering up their own children. Messages presented in court showed him giving detailed instructions, watching abuse over video calls, and recording material himself.

In October 2013, the remaining members of Lostprophets announced the band's end, saying they had no knowledge of the situation before it became public. Concerts were canceled, and a band that had once filled arenas came to a sudden end.

On December 18, 2013, Watkins appeared before Justice John Royce at Cardiff Crown Court for sentencing. The judge's remarks — published by the judiciary — remain among the starkest on modern record:

"Those who have appeared in these Courts at the Bar or on the Bench over many years see and hear a large number of horrific cases. This case, however, breaks new ground… What you three did plumbed new depths of depravity."

Of Watkins himself, the judge concluded: "You are a deeply corrupting influence; you are highly manipulative; you are a sexual predator; you are dangerous."

Watkins received a 35-year extended sentence: 29 years in custody, followed by six years on extended license, with no parole eligibility until two-thirds of the custodial term had been served.

His co-defendants, B and P, received 14 and 17 years, respectively. Radio stations stopped playing the band's songs, projects were canceled, and the industry began a larger reckoning with how early warnings had gone unheeded.

Assault and Death

While incarcerated, Watkins was accused of grooming the mother of a two-year-old girl through a series of correspondence. He was returned to HM Prison Wakefield, where in 2019 he was given an additional 10-month sentence for possession of a cell phone. Watkins claimed that he was being forced to hold the phone for other inmates, but refused to give their names.

Watkins was reportedly extorted by numerous inmates for protection. Because he was being housed on a general population wing rather than a wing exclusively for sex offenders, his high profile and the nature of his crimes made him a target.

On August 5, 2023, Watkins was taken hostage by three inmates and stabbed, and was freed only after prison officers intervened roughly six hours later. His injuries were not life-threatening at the time, though he later claimed lasting damage.

Then, on the morning of October 11, 2025, Watkins was attacked in his cell. Paramedics were called to the prison after reports he had been stabbed in the neck; Watkins was pronounced dead at the scene. He was 48. An inquest opened at Wakefield Coroner's Court heard the post-mortem cause of death was an incision to the neck.

West Yorkshire Police charged two inmates with murder: Rashid "Rico" Gedel, 25, and Samuel Dodsworth, 43. Two more men, aged 23 and 39, were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder and bailed. Gedel and Dodsworth have denied all charges.

Their trial opened at Leeds Crown Court on May 5, 2026. Jurors heard prosecutors allege that Gedel stabbed Watkins with a makeshift knife and passed it to Dodsworth, who threw it in a bin; Gedel testified that he hated being housed alongside sex offenders, while Dodsworth told the court he had panicked and played no part in any attack.

On May 22, 2026, the judge discharged the jury for legal reasons. A retrial is scheduled for February 8, 2027.

Aftermath

News of Watkins' death spread quickly, and while many saw it as prison justice, some saw it as yet another failure of the system to protect those under its watch, even those convicted of the most heinous crimes. For her part, Joanne Mjadzelics, Watkins’ former girlfriend, expressed relief when speaking to the media about his death. She also expressed surprise that it had taken that long to happen.

Vigilante justice is what happens when people stop waiting for the courts and take punishment into their own hands — a parent avenging a child, a town closing ranks around a killing, a criminal appointing himself executioner. What is vigilante justice?

Vigilante justice is the punishment of an alleged wrongdoer by someone acting outside the law — without trial, verdict, or legal authority. It runs from a grieving parent killing an abuser to a whole community shielding whoever pulled the trigger. These cases raise hard moral and legal questions precisely because the underlying wrong is so often real.

What drives a grieving family to take the law into its own hands?

Few vigilante cases divide readers like the ones driven by grief. A parent who has watched the system fail their child can become the most sympathetic killer in true crime — and the most legally complicated. These two cases, decades and continents apart, test how far a mother or father can be pushed.

What happens when an entire town wants a man dead?

Background

The 1995 HBO film Citizen X chronicles the hunt for one of Russia’s most vicious serial killers. As dozens of mutilated bodies are discovered in and around Rostov Oblast during the 1980s, forensic specialist Viktor Burakov faces mounting pressure from his superiors and the media to catch the elusive killer known as the “Rostov Ripper.”

Eventually, Burakov is aided by Dr. Alexandr Bukhanovsky, a psychiatrist who creates a remarkably accurate profile of the killer, whom he labels “Citizen X.” Much of the story is set during the Soviet era. This plays a significant role in the investigation. Many of the crimes are not publicly reported for fear of the negative impact it could have on the image of the USSR. This prevented potential leads or tips from the public that might have aided the investigation.

The film highlights these obstacles as well as the persistence that finally pays off when the killer is apprehended during a surveillance operation. Directed by Chris Gerolmo and starring Stephen Rae, Donald Sutherland, and Max von Sydow, the film earned praise from audiences and critics and holds an 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Plot Summary

The film opens in the early 1980s, as investigators in the Rostov region begin discovering the bodies of murdered women and children. At first, local police believe the crimes are unrelated. But as more victims appear, investigator Viktor Burakov begins to suspect that they are dealing with something much larger. He sees patterns that others either miss or refuse to acknowledge.

Many Soviet officials do not want to acknowledge that a serial killer is active in southern Russia, so throughout the film, Burakov faces constant resistance from bureaucrats who are worried about political embarrassment. Some officials insist that serial killers are a Western problem and do not exist in a communist society. Valuable information becomes trapped inside government offices while the body count continues to rise.

As the years pass, Burakov becomes obsessed with the case. His marriage suffers, and his health deteriorates. He was hospitalized for what was classified as severe occupational trauma. Yet he continues pushing forward because he knows every delay means more victims. Thousands of suspects are questioned, railway stations are monitored, and surveillance teams are deployed across multiple regions. Despite these efforts, the killer remains free.

One of the film's most memorable moments occurs when investigators finally identify a strong suspect, Andrei Chikatilo, but due to an error involving blood-type evidence, he is released. The mistake becomes one of the most frustrating moments in the story. As the investigation enters the late 1980s, Burakov and his team finally begin closing in on their suspect. The evidence overwhelmingly points toward Chikatilo. However, after he is arrested, investigators struggled to obtain a confession.

The breakthrough comes when Dr. Bukhanovsky sits down with Chikatilo. Instead of accusing him, the psychiatrist carefully explains the emotions, frustrations, and motivations driving the murders. Chikatilo becomes increasingly emotional as he realizes someone understands the darkest parts of his personality, and eventually confesses.

After years of failure and political obstacles, investigators finally brought the Rostov Ripper to justice. The film ends with Chikatilo's execution.

While the film presents the investigation as primarily a two-man effort, the real task force was enormous. The hunt for Chikatilo was unlike anything Soviet law enforcement had previously experienced. According to investigative records, more than 300,000 individuals were questioned. The investigation crossed jurisdictional boundaries throughout southern Russia and Ukraine.

During the investigation, the team reportedly solved over 1,000 unrelated crimes, including numerous murders, simply as a byproduct of running the enormous surveillance operation.

Performances and Reception

When Citizen X premiered on HBO on February 25, 1995, much of the praise focused on its cast. At the center of the film was Irish actor Stephen Rea, who portrayed investigator Viktor Burakov. Rea was already known for acclaimed performances in films such as The Crying Game (1992), but Citizen X gave him a very different role.

Many critics considered Rea's performance to be the emotional heart of the movie. Yet it was Donald Sutherland who received the most recognition. Sutherland portrays Colonel Mikhail Fetisov, a senior official who supports Burakov's investigation despite pressure from above. In many scenes, Fetisov serves as the voice of common sense within a deeply flawed system.

Sutherland brings a quiet authority to the role. His portrayal would later earn both a Primetime Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor. Another standout performance came from Max von Sydow as psychiatrist Dr. Aleksandr Bukhanovsky. By the time Citizen X was released, von Sydow was already regarded as a highly accomplished actor. In Citizen X, he brought calm intelligence to the role of the psychiatrist who helped identify the killer.

Then there was Jeffrey DeMunn, who faced perhaps the most difficult role of all, portraying Andrei Chikatilo. Instead of playing the character as a stereotypical movie villain, DeMunn portrayed him as shy and awkward, which reflected reality. His performance earned him an Emmy nomination and won him a CableACE Award.

Supporting performances from actors such as Imelda Staunton, Joss Ackland, and John Wood further strengthened the film. Together, their performances elevated Citizen X beyond a standard crime drama.

The film was directed and written by Chris Gerolmo and was based largely on the nonfiction book The Killer Department by journalist Robert Cullen, who had closely followed the Chikatilo investigation and interviewed many of the people involved. Rather than focusing mainly on the murders, the film concentrated on the investigation itself and the men who spent years trying to stop the killer.

Many reviewers lauded the film for treating the subject matter seriously and respectfully. Critics praised the restraint of the direction, the intelligence of the script, and the quality of the performances across the board.

At the 1995 Primetime Emmy Awards, Citizen X received seven nominations. Donald Sutherland won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor. The film also earned nominations for Outstanding Made-for-Television Movie, Directing, Writing, Casting, and Editing, as well as a Supporting Actor nomination for Jeffrey DeMunn. At the 1996 Golden Globe Awards, Donald Sutherland won Best Supporting Actor, while the film itself received a nomination for Best Television Movie or Miniseries.

Actual Events

Andrei Romanovich Chikatilo was born on October 16, 1936, in the small village of Yablochnoye, in what was then the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. He came into the world during one of the darkest periods in Ukrainian history.

Just a few years before his birth in the early 1930s, Ukraine had been devastated by the Holodomor, which was a state-engineered famine under Stalin's agricultural collectivization policies that killed millions of people. Although the famine had officially ended, food still remained scarce, poverty was common, and many families lived in constant hunger.

According to accounts later provided by Chikatilo, his mother, Anna, repeatedly told him that before he was born, his older brother, Stepan, had been kidnapped at four years old and eaten by starving neighbors during the famine. Though it was never established if this had actually occurred or if Stepan Chikatilo had even existed, the story traumatized young Andrei, and he grew up believing that somewhere in his village, desperate people had once eaten a child to survive.

World War II brought more trauma. When Germany invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, his father, Roman Chikatilo, was drafted into the Red Army and sent to fight. The Nazi occupation brought hunger, fear, and violence. Like many Soviet children of his generation, Andrei grew up surrounded by death and suffering.

As a child, Chikatilo was described as shy, withdrawn, and anxious. He also suffered from a medical condition called hydrocephalus (water on the brain) at birth, which caused bladder and urinary problems. As a result, he often wet the bed, and the problem persisted into his adolescence. His mother reportedly beat and humiliated him over it, which left a lasting mark on him.

Though he was a good student, Chikatilo had difficulty at school. He would often go there on an empty stomach, suffering from extreme hunger. His weak stature and shabby homemade clothing made him a frequent target of bullies. During his adolescence, he discovered that he was impotent, which only added to his shame and low self-esteem.

After finishing vocational training, he moved to the industrial city of Nizhny Tagil and later served in the Soviet Army from 1957 to 1960. His military record was considered good, and he even joined the Communist Party before leaving the service. Shortly after returning from military service, he began a relationship with a young woman.

The relationship ended badly after repeated sexual difficulties. The news spread among friends and neighbors, and according to his later statements, the ridicule affected him deeply and contributed to years of frustration and resentment.

By the early 1960s, Chikatilo left his hometown and moved to the Rostov region of Russia, hoping for a fresh start. In 1963, he married a woman named Feodosia Odnacheva, known as Fayina, and they had two children, a son and a daughter. In 1964, he enrolled as a correspondence student and studied Russian literature at Rostov Liberal Arts University, obtaining his degree in 1971.

Soon after, Chikatilo began working as a schoolteacher in the mining city of Novoshakhtinsk in Rostov Oblast. Several complaints surfaced accusing him of inappropriate behavior toward the students, including groping and physical assaults. Though the incidents were documented, he was not punished. However, as the incidents continued, the school’s director told Chikatilo that he would need to either resign or be fired.

He left quietly, and in early 1974 he found work teaching at another school. Chikatilo later admitted that during this time, he often spied on and sometimes sexually assaulted young girls. After being laid off in 1978 due to staff cutbacks, Chikatilo began working at a technical school in the city of Shakhty. He was fired in 1981 after more allegations of sexual abuse.

Following his termination, Chikatilo quickly obtained employment as a supply clerk for a construction factory in Rostov. His new job caused him to travel throughout the Soviet Union to negotiate contracts and purchase materials.

Most people who encountered him remembered an unremarkable middle-aged worker who blended easily into the crowd. While family members and colleagues saw a quiet husband and father, Chikatilo was deeply broken inside as his impotence and feelings of inadequacy were never resolved.

First Murder

On December 22, 1978, Chikatilo lured a 9-year-old girl named Yelena Zakotnova to an abandoned house he had secretly purchased in Shakhty, where he taught school. He tried to rape her, and when she struggled, he stabbed her with a knife. He then threw her body into the Grushevka River, where it was found two days later beneath a nearby bridge.

A witness had seen him with the child shortly before she disappeared. Chikatilo was brought in for questioning, but his wife provided him with a solid alibi, and investigators moved on. They now needed a suspect with a criminal record, and they found one in a 25-year-old man named Aleksandr Kravchenko, who had a prior conviction for rape and murder. Under what is strongly believed to have been a coerced interrogation, Kravchenko confessed, though he later retracted his confession, claiming he had been under extreme duress; he was nevertheless convicted of the murder.

In 1983, after years of legal proceedings and appeals, Aleksandr Kravchenko was executed for the murder of Yelena Zakotnova. Chikatilo had gotten away with the crime, and tragically, would get away with many more killings before he was finally apprehended. Chillingly, he would later claim that after the murder, he could only achieve sexual arousal from the torture and murder of women and children.

Victim Selection and Modus Operandi

On September 3, 1981, Chikatilo killed again. His second known victim was 17-year-old Larisa Tkachenko. She was waiting at a bus station near Rostov-on-Don when Chikatilo approached her. He convinced her to accompany him to a secluded area, where he attacked and murdered her. Her body was later found near the Don River. Investigators noticed disturbing similarities between her murder and the killing of Yelena years earlier, but at the time, nobody connected the cases.

As the decade passed, Chikatilo killed at least 53 people, comprising 14 girls, 21 boys, and 18 women. His hunting grounds were the bus stops and train stations scattered across Rostov Oblast and neighboring regions. As a supply clerk and factory worker, he did not arouse suspicion because his work-related travel was normal. He used trains extensively, often spending hours in railway stations where he could observe potential victims.

His method was almost always the same. Chikatilo targeted people who were often vulnerable and easy to isolate. He would approach them at a station, in a park, at a market, or in a public area and begin a friendly conversation. Sometimes he offered food, and other times, he promised help, directions, or companionship. If the victim agreed to walk with him, he would lead them toward woods, abandoned areas, riverbanks, or isolated fields away from witnesses.

Once alone, victims were stabbed repeatedly, often with over 30 wounds on a single body. Some victims had their eyes gouged out, and many were horrifically mutilated. The killing and the act of violence were what gave Chikatilo the only sexual release he was capable of. He left traces of semen at crime scenes. He bit his victims, and he sometimes removed and consumed organs. His crimes were becoming progressively more brutal, and as the years passed, fear spread across southern Russia.

One of the most unusual aspects of the case was not the killer himself but the system around him. During the Cold War, Soviet leaders promoted the idea that communist society was morally superior to the West. Crime certainly existed, but officials often insisted that certain forms of crime, especially serial murder, were products of capitalist societies.

As a result, many authorities initially struggled to accept what investigators were discovering in Rostov. But by 1982, when bodies were appearing across multiple districts, investigators could no longer ignore the pattern.

Hunt for the “Rostov Ripper”

In January 1983, Soviet authorities in Moscow sent Major Mikhail Fetisov, a senior detective, to Rostov to take charge. Fetisov, in turn, assigned a young forensic analyst named Viktor Burakov to lead the ground investigation in Shakhty. Burakov had little experience with an investigation like this, but he was meticulous and relentless. Unlike some officials, he believed the evidence clearly pointed to a serial killer, but proving it was another matter entirely.

In September 1984, Chikatilo was arrested and detained after he was observed at a Rostov bus station attempting to talk to several young women. Inside his briefcase, police found a knife, rope, and Vaseline. A blood sample from Chikatilo was taken and compared against semen samples recovered at some of the crime scenes. However, the samples were type AB, while Chikatilo’s blood sample was type A. He was therefore not considered a suspect.

Nobody knew at the time that Chikatilo suffered from an extraordinarily rare biological condition that caused discrepancies between his blood type and bodily fluids. He was what scientists call a "non-secretor." His blood was Type A, and his semen read as AB. There was, in fact, a medical explanation, but the science available at the time failed to account for the difference.

Chikatilo was incarcerated on unrelated theft charges and released in December 1984. After his release, Chikatilo resumed killing. Desperate for answers, Burakov sought help from a psychiatrist, Dr. Aleksandr Bukhanovsky. Using crime scene evidence, victim patterns, and behavioral clues, Bukhanovsky created a detailed psychological profile of the unknown killer.

The profile described a middle-aged married man, socially awkward, suffering from sexual problems, educated, and employed in a job that required frequent travel. The profile fit Andrei Chikatilo with remarkable accuracy. Though at the time, investigators still had no suspect.

Breakthrough in the Case

By 1990, Chikatilo was killing more frequently than ever. He murdered nine people that year alone, including children as young as seven. The discovery of fresh bodies in wooded areas around Rostov triggered a massive police mobilization across the whole area. Burakov then designed the strategy that would finally catch him.

Because many of the victims were found near train stations in Rostov, the plan was to flood the busier, more crowded stations with highly visible uniformed officers in an attempt to divert the killer to one of three smaller, less busy stations, which undercover plainclothes officers were keeping under surveillance. The plan was set in motion in late October 1990.

On November 6, 1990, Chikatilo murdered 22-year-old Svetlana Korostik near a wooded area outside Donleskhoz station. Unlike many of his previous victims, Svetlana fought back. During the struggle, she scratched Chikatilo's face and hands, leaving visible marks. When he emerged from the forest, his appearance attracted attention. His clothes were dirty, his face was scratched, and leaves and branches clung to his suit.

A police officer named Igor Rybakov noticed him. The officer had no idea he was looking at the Rostov Ripper. Rybakov stopped the man, checked his identification, and wrote down his details. Since there was no evidence linking him to a crime at that moment, Chikatilo was allowed to leave. But the officer's report was filed and soon reached investigators working on the serial murder case.

Arrest and Confession

The name of the suspicious man matched one that was already in the files. Viktor Burakov then placed Chikatilo under surveillance. On November 20, 1990, Chikatilo was arrested, and inside his briefcase once again were a knife, a rope, and Vaseline.

While in custody, Chikatilo went quiet. The hardline interrogators who tried to break him through confrontation got nowhere, and for days, he said almost nothing and denied everything. Investigators knew that proving dozens of murders in court would be difficult without his cooperation.

Physical evidence existed, but many of the crimes had occurred years earlier, so they needed something more. That was when psychiatrist Dr. Aleksandr Bukhanovsky entered the interrogation process. Bukhanovsky had spent years studying the case. Unlike other interrogators, he did not focus on threats or intimidation. Instead, the psychiatrist sat down with Chikatilo alone in the room and focused on understanding the man in front of him.

He started with the psychological profile he had written five years earlier and began to read it aloud as a description. Here was a man, he said, who had been humiliated as a child. Who had never been understood. Who had discovered, by accident, that the only thing that made him feel anything was the act of violence. Who had been carrying this terrible secret alone for 32 years.

According to accounts of the session, Chikatilo began to tremble. Then he wept. He had never once in his life felt that anyone truly understood what was inside him. Eventually, Chikatilo started talking and confessing. He admitted to murder after murder, providing details that only the killer could have known.

At first, he confessed to dozens of killings already linked to the investigation. Then he revealed additional murders that police had never connected to the case. He even led investigators to locations where bodies had been hidden. In December 1990, he guided authorities to the remains of one victim, providing undeniable proof that he was the killer they had been hunting.

Eventually, Chikatilo confessed to 56 murders. Authorities ultimately charged him with 53 murders committed between 1978 and 1990.

Trial and Execution

The trial of Andrei Chikatilo opened on April 14, 1992, in Rostov-on-Don. To protect the court from both the defendant and the rage of victims' families, he was kept in an iron cage throughout the proceedings. The media dubbed him "The Maniac." His behavior was strange, as he ranted, sang, talked nonsense, and at one point dropped his trousers and waved his genitals at the crowd. The proceedings lasted for months.

On October 15, 1992, Chikatilo was found guilty of 52 murders and sentenced to death. Despite appeals from his lawyers and claims of mental illness, higher courts upheld the conviction. A final plea for mercy sent to Russian President Boris Yeltsin was rejected.

On February 14, 1994, Andrei Romanovich Chikatilo was taken to a soundproof room in Novocherkassk prison and executed with a single gunshot to the back of the head. He was 57 years old at that time.

After his execution in 1994, Chikatilo's brain was reportedly donated to a research institute to study the neurological basis of his behavior. Any definitive findings from that research have never been publicly published.

The Film's Portrayal of the Investigation

One of the reasons the film received so much praise is that, unlike many true crime films, Citizen X focuses on the investigators rather than the killer. From the opening scenes, viewers are placed in the shoes of Viktor Burakov. Instead of showing every murder in graphic detail, the film concentrates on the endless frustration of trying to solve a case when every answer seems just out of reach.

Investigators are forced to pursue theories they know are wrong. Innocent people are rounded up because they fit a political profile more conveniently than the evidence. It depicts a system that would rather have the wrong answer quickly than the right answer slowly.

The movie shows investigators working long hours, traveling across vast distances, and chasing leads that often end in disappointment. It becomes clear that solving the case is not simply a matter of finding evidence.

Although some details are simplified for storytelling purposes, the overall investigation shown in Citizen X remains one of the most accurate portrayals of a real criminal investigation ever put on screen.

More than thirty years after the crimes and over three decades after the film's release, Citizen X's success came from its strong performances, careful storytelling, and a commitment to showing how a determined group of investigators eventually brought one of history's most notorious serial killers to justice.

Background

The 1970 film The Honeymoon Killers is based on the crimes of Raymond Fernandez and Martha Beck. Refered to as “The Lonely Hearts Killers’, Fernandez and Beck defrauded and swindled several older women during the late 1940s. However, when their crimes escalated from theft to cold-blooded murder, their carefully crafted scheme came crashing down.

The film, which was shot in black and white on a minuscule budget of $250,000, would go on to receive near universal acclaim. It currently holds a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 82 out of 100 score on Metacritic. Though it was not initially a success upon release, it has become appreciated by critics and viewers for its cinematography, direction, and uncompromising portrayal of the callous and brutal nature of the two main characters.

The film was originally set to be directed by acclaimed filmmaker Martin Scorsese; however, he was fired early on in the shooting due to creative differences. Scorsese was then replaced by director Donald Volkman, who was also fired after just two weeks. The film’s writer, Leonard Kastle, then took over directorial duties for the remainder of the project. The film premiered in New York City in February 1970.

Plot Summary

The film opens with a message stating:

Though regular readers of this site may find that first sentence a bit hyperbolic, many of the events shown in the film are, in fact, based on the real story of Raymond Fernandez, played by Tony Lo Bianco, and Martha Beck, played by Shirley Stoler. The film also uses the actual names of the perpetrators and their victims, which is not always typical of films based on real events. However, the timeline of events, as well as some of the locations, have been changed or altered for dramatic purposes.

At the beginning of the film, we see Martha Beck, an overweight and lonely hospital nursing administrator who is angry and bitter at the way her life is going, and lashes out at those under her. Martha lives in Mobile, Alabama, with her friend Bunny, who cares for Martha’s elderly mother.

One day, an unexpected letter arrives for Martha. When she opens it, she is furious to learn that Bunny had registered her in “Aunt Carrie’s Friendship Club,” a correspondence service for lonely people. However, her attitude soon changes when she receives a letter from a man named Raymond Fernandez from New York.

We hear a voiceover from Raymond as he is writing a letter to Martha. He says that it is the first time he has written this type of letter. We then see the camera focus on several framed pictures of various women. The two continue to exchange letters, and Ray, as he is now referred to by Martha, agrees to visit Martha in Mobile.

Ray charms and seduces Martha, and she gives him several hundred dollars before he returns to New York. Realizing that Martha has no real assets, Ray attempts to end things. Martha, with help from Bunny, then calls Ray and threatens to kill herself if Ray breaks up with her. Though we see that she is bluffing, Ray believes her and, in a way, is flattered that she has become so enamored with him.

Martha then visits Ray in New York, where he reveals he is actually a con man who romances women and defrauds them of their money. Martha is undeterred by this and continues seeing Ray. After returning to Alabama, Martha is fired from her job due to her correspondence with Ray.

Ray agrees to let Martha come to New York and stay with him, but he refuses to allow her to bring her mother. Against her mother’s pleading, Martha checks her into a retirement home and heads for New York. She agrees to assist in Ray’s schemes by pretending to be his sister.

Their first victim is an older schoolteacher from New Jersey, who Ray marries under an assumed name. The scheme is cut short when the woman discovers that Martha has stolen cash and jewelry from her bag while she was in the bathroom. After Martha threatens to expose her letters to Ray to her school’s superintendent, the woman angrily leaves.

Their next target is an unmarried woman named Myrtle who is pregnant and has agreed to pay Ray to pose as her husband to save face with her family. Things start to go wrong when the woman becomes attracted to Ray and wants to be intimate. This enrages Martha, who, after a bitter argument, gives Ray a bunch of pills to give to Myrtle. After taking what she believed were sleeping pills, Myrtle becomes very ill, and after Ray puts her on a bus to her hometown, she dies on the way.

Martha’s violent temper and fierce jealousy continue to thwart Ray’s schemes, leading to mutual frustration. In an attempt to appease Martha, Ray rents a house in Valley Stream, Long Island. However, he resents the slow suburban life, and the couple’s funds quickly dry up.

They are soon back to running their romance scam, and the next victim is an elderly woman from Albany named Janet Fay. Janet, who makes her own hats as a hobby, is convinced by Ray, now posing as Charles Martin, that she could have success opening her own hat shop in Valley Stream. Smitten with “Charles”, Janet agrees and, without notifying her friends or family, leaves with Ray and Martha for Valley Stream.

Janet then endorses several checks totaling $10,000 as “startup capital” for the business. During the night, Janet begins to question her decision and tells Martha that she wants to call her family and let them know where she is. After an intense argument, Janet pleads with “Charles” to help her. When Martha accidentally calls him Ray, Janet realizes that she is in big trouble.

Ray then instructs Martha to hit Janet with a hammer, which she does. The two of them then strangle her and later bury her body in the cellar of the house. Ray then forges letters to Janet’s relatives informing them that she and “Charles” are now married and living in Florida.

The two of them then go to their next and final victim, a widow named Delphine Downing, in Michigan. Ray and Martha, once again posing as brother and sister, begin staying with Downing and her young daughter. When Delphine confides in Martha that she is pregnant with Ray’s child, Martha becomes visibly disturbed and tells Delphine that Ray will leave her unless she takes pills to abort the baby.

Martha then begins trying to force the pills into Delphine’s mouth. When Ray and Delphine’s daughter return home from shopping, the child begins to scream when she sees what is happening. Martha lies to Ray, saying that Delphine knows about their plan and was going to call the police. Ray then takes a pistol out of a nearby dresser and shoots Delphine in the head.

After some debate, they decide that the child knows too much and will have to die. Offscreen, we hear the sounds of Martha drowning her. Later, when Ray tells Martha he has one final victim lined up in New Orleans, Martha realizes she will never have Ray to herself. She then goes upstairs and calls the police, giving them the address of the Downing home.

In the final scene of the film, Martha is about to begin her trial when she is given a letter from Ray, which she excitedly reads. In the letter, Ray expresses his love for her, saying that she was the only woman he ever truly loved. This is one of the very few moments in the film when Martha is seen to be genuinely happy.

There is then a message at the bottom of the screen saying that Martha Beck and Raymond Fernandez were electrocuted in Sing Sing Prison on March 8, 1951.

Actual Events

As stated, many of the real events and people involved in the “Lonely Hearts Killers” case are depicted in the film, though the timelines and locations for several were changed. For instance, the real Martha Beck was living in Florida and not Alabama. She also did not live with her mother; rather, by the time she met Raymond Fernandez, she was a single mother living with her two young children. The film does not delve into either person’s background.

Martha Seabrook was born in 1920 in Florida. Martha’s father abandoned the family when she was young. At one point, as a teenager, she ran away from home to join the circus, but later returned. She went to school for nursing; however, she had trouble landing a job after graduation. She briefly took a job as an undertaker’s assistant before moving to California.

While living in California, Martha became pregnant. She unsuccessfully tried to maintain a relationship with the child’s father and eventually returned to Florida. As a way to deflect her shame, she told her friends and neighbors that the baby’s father had been killed in the war.

While in Florida, Martha became pregnant once again by a man named Alfred Beck. Though the couple did marry, their union lasted only six months, and he was already gone before the child was even born. Unlike in the film, Martha, not her friend, enrolled herself in “Mother Dinene’s Friendly Club”, where she met Raymond Fernandez.

Raymond Fernandez was born in 1914 to Spanish parents in what was then the Territory of Hawaii. The family would relocate to Connecticut not long after his birth. At age 20, Fernandez moved to Gibraltar, Spain. While there, he met and married a Spanish woman, and the couple had four children.

During World War II, Fernandez served with both the Spanish merchant navy and British intelligence services. In 1945, Fernandez abandoned his wife and children and boarded a U.S.-bound ship. When Raymond arrived in the United States, he settled into a life of fraud and crime. He was arrested and imprisoned in Florida for robbery. He also became quite adept at latching onto and using women he met.

After corresponding by letters, Fernandez traveled from New York to Florida to meet Martha. In a twist of irony, Fernandez soon learned that she had lied to him about how wealthy and successful she was, in an attempt to impress him. Disappointed, Raymond stayed with her for a few days before returning to New York.

Shortly after this, Martha lost her job. She then left Florida and traveled to New York City, unexpectedly showing up at Raymond’s home. Initially, he was annoyed by this; however, he soon came to enjoy Martha’s complete devotion to him and her desperation to please him.

When he informed her that her two children could not stay with them, she sent them to the Salvation Army. During his initial attempts to get Martha to leave, Fernandez told her he was a con man who made his living by scamming and defrauding women. Undeterred, Martha willingly agreed to help him in these endeavors and act as his accomplice.

Satisfied with this arrangement, Fernandez would write letters to women in the Lonely Hearts club and tell them whatever they wanted to hear in order to get them to agree to meet him. To help put the women more at ease, Martha would accompany them on their date, posing as either Fernandez’s sister or sister-in-law. Though they were successful in several instances, as depicted in the film, some of the scams were undone because of Beck’s intense jealousy and violent temper.

“The Lonely Hearts Killers”

In 1949, Fernandez became involved with 66-year-old Janet Fay. In his typical con man fashion, Raymond piqued her interest by claiming they shared similar religious views. Soon after they met, Fay became engaged to Fernandez. She then moved into the Long Island apartment that he shared with his “sister” Martha.

The con seemed to be going well, as Raymond had already coaxed several thousand dollars out of Janet. However, it was only a matter of time before Martha’s jealousy and violent impulses would come into play.

One day in January 1949, after seeing Raymond and Fay in bed together, Martha flew into a violent rage and attacked Janet with a hammer, striking her multiple times on her skull. Fernandez then strangled Fay to make sure she was dead.

Fearing that Janet’s family would soon report her missing, the couple packed up and moved to Wyoming Township, Michigan, just outside of Grand Rapids. Through the Lonely Hearts club, Fernandez met a 28-year-old widow named Delphine Downing. Fernandez and Beck were soon staying with Downing and her 2-year-old daughter. Downing believed that Martha was Raymond’s sister-in-law.

On February 26, 1949, something happened that upset Downing. At some point, Fernandez or Beck gave her sleeping pills to sedate her. During that time, Downing’s young daughter was continually crying. When the child would not stop, Beck strangled her. Although the child did not die, she had deep bruises on her neck and throat.

Fearful that when Downing woke up, she would see the marks on her daughter and go to the police, Fernandez shot Downing in the head as she lay passed out from the pills. Fernandez and Beck stayed in Downing’s home for several days after the murder. With her daughter continuously crying, Martha eventually drowned the child in a water basin. Both bodies were then buried in the basement.

Unlike what was depicted in the film, Martha did not call the police; instead, Downing’s neighbors reported her and her daughter missing. Police went to Downing’s home and found Fernandez and Beck there; the couple was arrested.

Trial and Execution

While detained, Fernandez and Beck made full confessions, though there were some discrepancies in the details. Fernandez claimed he confessed to protect Martha. However, it seems likely that he chose to confess to his crimes in Michigan because the state had abolished capital punishment.

In what must have been a surprise for the couple, Michigan chose not to press charges for the Downing murders. Opting instead to extradite the pair to New York, where the death penalty was still active.

Fernandez tried to recant his confession, but to no avail. The pair then entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity. Raymond Fernandez and Martha Beck were both found guilty of the murder of Janet Fay and sentenced to death.

Reportedly, Fernandez sent Beck a message mere hours before their execution, confirming his love for her. Beck then told a nurse that she could die happy knowing this. Raymond Fernandez and Martha Beck, “The Lonely Hearts Killers,” were executed in the electric chair at Sing Sing Prison on March 8, 1951.

Background

All Good Things is a 2010 mystery crime drama directed by Andrew Jarecki and starring Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst. The real-life events that inspired the movie took place during the 1970s and early 1980s, and later during the early 2000s. The story is based on Robert Durst, the son of New York City real estate mogul Seymour Durst, and the mysterious and suspicious disappearance of Robert’s wife, Kathleen McCormack Durst.

After her disappearance in 1982, Kathleen was never seen again, and despite an intensive investigation and Durst’s erratic and contradictory statements and behaviors, no one was charged in the case. Years later, Durst would be implicated in two more violent deaths.

Though he had seemingly gotten away with his crimes, in a twist of fate, it would be interviews that he agreed to do with Andrew Jarecki, the film’s director, that ultimately put Durst behind bars for life.

Plot Summary

Writers Marcus Hinchey and Marc Smerling based the film's screenplay on events from Robert Durst's life. The film took its title from the name of a health food shop opened by Robert Durst and Kathleen McCormack Durst. The movie was filmed between April and July of 2008 in locations in Connecticut and New York.

The movie, directed by Andrew Jarecki, stars Ryan Gosling as David Marks (Robert Durst) and Kirsten Dunst as Katie McCarthy (Kathleen McCormack), a middle-class medical student. In the movie, their marriage is volatile and fraught with violence, anger, and domestic abuse.

In the early 1970s, David Marks, the son of a real estate tycoon, marries Katie McCarthy, a young, ambitious medical student. The couple open a health food store in Vermont called All Good Things, but are soon persuaded to return to New York by Marks’ controlling father.

The marriage is filled with intense arguments and violence, which at times has Katie fearing for her life. In one dramatic scene, she runs out onto a fire escape and bangs on a neighbor’s window for help because David has threatened to kill her.

Hoping to better her life, Katie enters medical school while her relationship with David continues to deteriorate. Her attempts to leave are thwarted by David and his father. When she seeks legal advice about getting a settlement from the Marks to help pay for schooling, she’s told she needs some form of leverage to get the family to agree. Katie tries to gather evidence to incriminate the family for financial misconduct.

According to David, he puts Katie on a train bound for Manhattan late one night. After that, she is never seen again. Eighteen years later, the missing person’s case is reopened by a district attorney who reads an unpublished novel written by Marks’ friend, Deborah Lehrman, with a murder identical to Katie’s.

Before she can be questioned further, Deborah is shot and killed in her home, execution style. Once again, David Marks becomes a prime suspect. At the same time, Marks is standing trial for the murder of his neighbor in Texas, Malvern Bump.

In the film, as in real life, Marks is acquitted of his neighbor’s murder. The movie version states that no one has ever been tried or convicted of Lehrman or Katie’s murder. Katie McCarthy remains missing. It does end with a provocative flashback of Katie’s remains in the trunk of Marks’ car. He mumbles to his father, “I still miss her,” but the viewer is left to wonder if he means his wife or his mother.

Although the film received mixed to poor critical reviews, earning a 35% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, some critics praised the performances of Gosling and Durst, while others labeled it as “cliched” and “frustratingly ambiguous.”

Actual Events

While the movie All Good Things is a dark murder mystery and romance, the true-life events are just as compelling. Real estate heir Robert Durst fell in love and married his first wife, Kathleen McCormack, a middle-class girl well below his social class.

Only nineteen when she met 28-year-old Robert, Kathleen agreed to move into Durst’s home in Vermont after just their second date. Together, they opened a health food store called All Good Things, but after pressure from Durst’s father, the two returned to New York.

The couple married in April 1972 and began a whirlwind of travel around the world. They eventually settled into an apartment on Riverside Drive in Manhattan. The couple mingled with New York’s high society and partied at places like the famous Studio 54. To many looking in, their marriage seemed perfect. However, Kathleen’s diaries painted a different picture.

Despite her crumbling marriage, Kathleen had ambitions. She enrolled in nursing and then medical school to better her life. Then, on January 31, 1982, while attending a party at a friend’s house, Kathleen received a telephone call from Durst. She left the party and, according to Durst, asked him to put her on a train bound for Manhattan later that night. She never arrived.

Several days passed before Durst, compelled by Kathleen’s family and friends, finally reported her missing. His statements to the police were contradictory. He first said he had received a phone call from a pay phone that Kathleen had arrived safely. Later, evidence proved this wasn’t possible.

A few weeks after Durst had reported Kathleen missing, the supervisor of their building noticed some of her belongings in the building’s trash compactor. Similarly, after some of Kathleen’s friends and family members entered her South Salem cottage, they observed that it had been ransacked and many of her belongings had been thrown in the trash.

During the course of the investigation, it was learned that Kathleen had intended to divorce Durst, and, in response, he had removed her name from the couple’s joint bank account and canceled her tuition payments. Entries in Kathleen’s diary revealed the abuse and turmoil and painted a dark picture of the marriage.

While Durst came under suspicion early on, there was not enough evidence to charge him with any wrongdoing. Kathleen was nowhere to be found, and eventually, her case slipped into the cold case file. In 2017, following a request from the McCormack family, Kathleen was declared legally dead.

Durst had friends, including close friend, Susan Berman, a well-known author, who stated Kathleen had likely run off with another man. Since the couple were known to have had other affairs during their marriage, this seemed a plausible explanation. At the time, Kathleen’s family implied that the wealthy Durst family was able to control the investigation and prevent Robert from being implicated.

The Many Crimes of Robert Durst

While the movie, All Good Things, focuses on the murder of Katie, two other murders are also mentioned toward the end. Although Kathleen McCormack Durst had been missing for eighteen years, in 2000, a new district attorney, Jeanine Pirro, decided to reopen the case. She believed Kathleen had been the victim of a homicide.

Though he was not yet named a suspect, Durst decided to go into hiding in Galveston, Texas. In December 2000, his good friend, Susan Berman, the one who had offered Durst an alibi at the time of Kathleen’s disappearance, was found murdered in her Los Angeles home. She had been shot execution style. Interestingly, Berman had been in touch with the LAPD, and those around her believed she was about to tell what she knew about Kathleen’s disappearance.

At first, Durst was not considered a suspect in Berman’s death until another incredible event happened. Durst had been living in disguise under an assumed name in Texas when, in October 2001, he was implicated in the murder of his 71-year-old neighbor, Morris Black. On September 30, Black’s dismembered body parts were found floating in Galveston Bay.

Durst was arrested, posted bail, and quickly went on the run, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. On November 30, Durst was arrested in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, after he was caught shoplifting a sandwich, a newspaper, and Band-Aids from a Wegmans supermarket despite being found with hundreds of dollars in his pocket.

When police searched Durst’s rental car, they discovered a briefcase containing more than $38,000 in cash, two pistols, and identification cards belonging to Morris Black. After being held in Pennsylvania, Durst was extradited to Texas to face murder charges in the killing of Black.

At trial, Durst admitted that he had killed Black; however, he claimed he had acted in self-defense. Despite Durst’s suspicious actions, including cutting up Black’s body, attempting to dispose of it, and going on the run, the jury believed his story, and in November 2003, he was acquitted of the murder charges. He would serve only three years for fleeing arrest and tampering with evidence. In 2005, he walked out of prison, a free man.

The Jinx

After the release of the movie All Good Things, word reached director Andrew Jarecki that Robert Durst, the subject of the movie, liked it. He praised the acting and the screenplay, going so far as to call it ‘very accurate.’ In a rare turnaround of his previous disdain for journalists, Durst agreed to be interviewed, to ‘tell his side of the story.’

The two would film more than 20 hours of interviews over the next few years for what would become the HBO documentary series The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst. In one session, not realizing his microphone was still “hot”, Durst can be heard confessing that he killed all three – Kathleen, Susan, and Black. Additionally, during the course of the filming, new evidence emerged that implicated Durst in the murder of his former friend, Susan Berman.

On March 14, 2015, one day before the final episode of The Jinx Season 1 aired, Durst was arrested. Authorities believed they had enough to charge him with Susan Berman’s death and issued a first-degree murder warrant. Durst was arrested by FBI agents at a Marriott hotel in New Orleans, where he had been staying under a false name. He was found with a revolver, a fake Texas driver's license, a mask, various state maps, more than $40,000 in cash, and other suspicious items.

Authorities in Louisiana wanted to charge Durst with firearms violations, while those in California wanted him extradited to face murder charges. Because of these disputes, as well as Durst’s various health problems, his trial for the murder of Susan Berman was delayed until March 2020. Then, as it was set to begin, the trial was further delayed due to COVID-19.

After several more delays by Durst’s attorneys, he was eventually convicted of the first-degree murder of Susan Berman on September 17, 2021. In October, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Days after that conviction, he was also charged with the murder of his first wife, Kathleen. She had been missing for forty years and had been declared legally dead years before.

Death and Aftermath

Though it looked as though Robert Durst would finally be held accountable for his wife’s death, he would never make it to trial. After dealing with numerous health problems, Durst died of cardiac arrest in a prison hospital on January 10, 2022, at age 78.

As of this writing, there are several legal battles taking place over Robert Durst’s estate, which has been valued at more than $100 million. Kathleen McCormack’s family has filed numerous civil suits, the most recent of which remains in the pre-trial phase. In a roundabout way, justice was finally served, although Kathleen’s body has never been found. Kathleen’s family is still trying to hold the Durst family legally accountable for her death.

Background

Released in late 2003, the film Monster is the directorial debut of Patty Jenkins and stars Charlize Theron as real-life serial killer Aileen Wuornos. Monster premiered at the AFI Fest on November 16, 2003, and was released in the United States on December 24. The film was a critical and commercial success. Produced on a budget of around $1.5 million, it went on to gross over $64 million.

Along with praise from many film critics, Monster won numerous awards. Theron won the Academy Award for Best Actress, as well as the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Drama, and several others. Patty Jenkins won the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature.

Jenkins first became interested in Aileen’s story after watching a documentary about her. Rather than making a ‘conventional’ serial killer film, Jenkins took a different route and sought to portray Aileen as a deeply damaged person whose violent crimes emerged from years of sexual trauma and physical violence.

A Troubled Childhood

Aileen Wuornos was born on February 29, 1956, and was raised by her grandparents in Rochester, Michigan, after she and her older brother, Keith, were abandoned by their mother. In 1967, Aileen’s father, Leo Pittman, whom she had never met, was convicted of the kidnapping and rape of a seven-year-old girl and sentenced to life in prison. Pittman, who had also been diagnosed with schizophrenia, hung himself in prison.

A tough start for anyone, Aileen's pathway into adolescence and adulthood would only get worse; she would later claim to have suffered much physical and sexual abuse, although some aspects of those claims still remain disputed. By age 11, Wuornos was acting out sexually with boys at her school in exchange for cigarettes and other items.

According to Aileen, her grandfather, who was an alcoholic, was physically and sexually abusive towards her. When she was 14, Wuornos became pregnant. She said she had been raped by a friend of her grandfather. She was sent by her grandmother to a home for unwed mothers. After giving birth in 1971, she gave the child up for adoption. Soon after that, Aileen’s grandmother died, and she and her brother became wards of the state.

Life of Crime

Not long after this, Aileen dropped out of school and began working as a prostitute. Without a stable place to live, she often slept outdoors in the woods. In 1974, she was arrested in Colorado for DUI, disorderly conduct, and firing a gun from a vehicle. Wurnos failed to appear in court to face the charges, and by 1976, she had hitchhiked to Florida.

Soon after she arrived, 20-year-old Aileen met a wealthy man nearly 50 years her senior. In 1976, Wuornos married 69-year-old Lewis Fell, who was president of a yacht club. However, Wuornos continued to drink heavily and get into fights at local bars. She was also violent towards her husband and would beat him with his cane, forcing Fell to file a restraining order against his wife. Less than three months after their wedding, the marriage was annulled.

After that, Wuornos returned to Michigan, where in July 1976, she was arrested and charged with assault during a barfight. Later that month, her brother Keith died of cancer, and Aileen inherited $10,000 in life insurance. She used some of the money to buy a car, which she quickly wrecked. Less than two months later, she had spent the remainder of the money. That same year, her grandfather, Lauri, took his own life.

Throughout her life, Wuornos also attempted suicide multiple times. In 1978, she attempted to end her life by shooting herself in the stomach. By 1981, she was back in Florida and was arrested in Edgewater for the armed robbery of a convenience store. She served one year of a three-year sentence and was released in 1983.

Aileen’s criminal activity continued after her release. In May 1984, she was arrested in Key West for check fraud. In 1985, she was a suspect in the theft of a revolver. In January 1986, she was arrested in Miami and charged with obstruction of justice and resisting arrest after giving officers false information when she was found with a gun and a stolen car.

Later that year, she was questioned by police after a male companion reported that Wuornos had pulled a gun on him and demanded money. Police then discovered a .22 caliber pistol hidden under her car seat.

Murders

In 1986, Aileen met 24-year-old motel maid Tyria Moore, and the two became romantically involved. The relationship lasted for several years, and to support herself and Moore, Aileen continued working as a highway prostitute around the area of Daytona Beach and along Florida’s highways.

Between November 1989 and November 1990, Aileen shot and killed seven of her male clients. After murdering the men, Aileen would steal their belongings, money, and even their vehicles.

Her first victim was 51-year-old repair shop owner Richard Mallory, who was murdered on November 30, 1989. His body, which had been dumped in a wooded area, was discovered shot to death on December 13.

Over the next year, Wuornos murdered at least six more men.
