Background

In August 2019, investigators in Williamson County, Texas, made a significant breakthrough in one of the county’s oldest cold-case homicides. After 40 years, they had finally identified the Jane Doe, known only as “Orange Socks” due to the distinctive socks she had been wearing when her body was found.

Though police have identified the victim as 23-year-old Debra Louise Jackson of Abilene, Texas, many questions remain, including who killed her and the circumstances surrounding her murder. Despite the passage of time, they remain hopeful that information from the public may lead to a break in the case.

Halloween 1979

On October 31, 1979, the body of a young woman was found in a concrete ditch off of highway I-35 near Georgetown, Texas.1 The victim was nude except for a pair of orange socks. Investigators determined that she had only been there a short time — possibly just hours — before she was found. The body had been thrown from a highway overpass and then dragged through the grass before being left near the culvert.

The medical examiner ruled the death a homicide resulting from strangulation. The body had a significant amount of visible bruising around the neck. Additional bruising on the body was a result of being dropped from the overpass. She had also been sexually assaulted.

With no identification at the scene, investigators noted all physical indicators and descriptions of the victim, including hair color, eye color, scars, and other distinctive features. She was approximately 5”8” to 5”10”, between 140 and 160 pounds, and her age was estimated to be late teens to mid-twenties.

Police believed she may have been a hitchhiker or drifter. One of the only clues found at the scene was a matchbook from a hotel in Henryetta, Oklahoma. Authorities checked the hotel but found no name in the registry that matched the victim.

The Georgetown Jane Doe came to be known as “Orange Socks” after the most distinctive feature of her case.2 Authorities believed that her murder may have been connected to several other unsolved homicides along I-35 in Travis County, Texas.

Soon, a notorious serial killer would claim responsibility for the murder, yet many within law enforcement were dubious.

A Serial Killer’s Confession

The case seemed to gain momentum when, in 1983, convicted killer Henry Lee Lucas confessed to the murder. According to Lucas, he met the victim in Oklahoma, and the two of them had consensual sex. Later, while in Texas, when Lee asked to have sex again, she tried to flee the car. Lee then strangled her and drove to Georgetown, where he dumped the body.

When authorities took Lucas to the crime scene, he reportedly showed them how he had dragged her body over the guardrail. Despite his confession, some within law enforcement were skeptical of his claims. There was evidence that Lucas was working in Florida at the time the murder occurred. He also contradicted himself numerous times during his interrogation.

According to his defense team, Lucas was shown images of the crime scene before speaking with investigators. Lucas has also confessed to a staggering number of additional murders where it was proven that he was not involved. In 1984, Lucas recanted his confession.

Despite this, Henry Lee Lucas was convicted of the killing and sentenced to death. However, in 1988, his sentence was commuted to life in prison by then-Governor of Texas George W. Bush.3 The reasoning was that this murder was the only one Lucas was convicted of that carried a capital sentence, and due to lingering doubts about his guilt, it was the better option. It was the only death sentence Governor Bush commuted during his time in office.

Lucas was ultimately convicted of eleven murders, including “Orange Socks” and his own mother. He was a suspect in many more. On March 12, 2001, Lucas died in prison of heart failure at age 64.

Orange Socks Identified

Over the years, several possibilities were put forth as to Orange Socks’ identity, including several missing women. However, they were all eventually ruled out. The case remained in the public eye and was featured twice on the television show America’s Most Wanted.

In 2016, new composite sketches of the victim were released by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. In 2018 and early 2019, new DNA samples were taken from a ring that she had been wearing, as well as from her socks. Analysis of the socks returned the DNA profiles of two different males.

DNA taken from the victim had been entered into the DNA Doe Project, where it returned a match for a possible cousin of the victim. Around the same time, Angie Larned saw one of the revised sketches, which closely resembled her sister Debra, who had left home in 1977 and had not been heard from since.4

After contacting investigators and looking at photographs of the victim, Angie and other family members identified the Jane Doe known only as Orange Socks as Debra Louise Jackson. In August 2019, DNA tests from Angie confirmed that she was, in fact, closely related to the victim.

After 40 years, “Orange Socks” finally had her name back, yet many questions still remain.

Lingering Questions

One reason it took so long to identify Debra Jackson is that she was never reported missing. Born on September 20, 1956, in Harris County, Texas, Debra was already an adult when she left her home in Abilene in 1977.

In 1978, Debra was working as a maid in a hotel in Amarillo. She is also known to have worked for an assisted living facility in Azle.5 Other than that, there is little information about Debra’s life in the brief period between her leaving Abilene in 1977 and being murdered in 1979.

Though he was convicted of her murder, many are doubtful that Henry Lee Lucas killed Debra. Unfortunately, even if Lucas did not commit the murder, the lack of available information about Debra’s life makes it difficult to determine if she would have known her killer or if they were a stranger.

Authorities are hopeful that one day the case will be solved. Anyone with any information about Jackson's murder is encouraged to contact the Williamson County Sheriff's Office at 512-943-5204 or the Williamson County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-253-7867

Background

On the evening of October 30, 1966, 18-year-old student Cheri Jo Bates went to the Riverside City College library to study. She never made it home. On Halloween day, her body was found not far from her parked car, having suffered multiple stab wounds during an intense fight with her attacker. Nearly six decades later, her murder remains unsolved.1

Over the years, different theories have emerged as to the identity of her killer. Some have even speculated that she may have been the first victim of the Zodiac Killer. What truly happened that night may never be known, and Cheri Jo’s murderer may well have taken that secret to the grave.

Cheri Jo Bates

Cheri Josephine Bates was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on February 4, 1948, the daughter of Joseph and Irene Bates, and the younger sister of Michael. The family moved to California in 1957, when Cheri Jo was nine. She was described as a sweet and outgoing young girl who was well liked.

While attending Ramona High School in Riverside, Cheri Jo was an honor student, a varsity cheerleader, and an active member of student government. She was ambitious and driven and hoped to become a flight attendant. After her parents’ divorce, Cheri Jo moved in with her father. Her mother stayed nearby, and her older brother, Michael, enlisted in the U.S. Navy.

After graduation, Cheri Jo enrolled in college courses at Riverside City College. While attending college, she worked part-time at Riverside National Bank and saved enough to buy herself a lime-green 1960 Volkswagen Beetle, her first adult purchase, and one she was very proud of.

October 30, 1966

On the morning of October 30, 1966, Cheri Jo attended Mass with her father at St. Catherine of Alexandria. After the service, she and her father went out for breakfast. That afternoon, Cheri Jo planned to go to the college library to study. After a friend, Stephanie Guttman, declined her invitation to join, Cheri Jo went to the library alone between 4:30 and 5 p.m. She had left a note on her fridge to let her father know where she was.

Multiple eyewitnesses placed Cheri Jo in the campus library until it closed at 9 p.m. that night. Back at home, Joseph sat up waiting for his daughter to return. When hours passed with no sign of Cheri Jo, Joseph became increasingly worried.

With still no sign of her, Joseph called Cheri Jo’s friend Stephanie to see if she might be there, but Stephanie provided no additional information beyond what he knew from the note Cheri Jo left behind – she had gone to the library and planned to study there until closing, then return home.

Early that morning, Joseph filed a missing person report with the Riverside Police Department. However, before the investigation could even begin, they received the horrific news. At approximately 6:30 a.m., the campus groundskeeper, Cleophus Martin, found Cheri Jo’s body.

Crime Scene

Cheri Jo lay face down on a gravel path between two unoccupied houses off Terracina Drive, near the library’s parking lot. She was still wearing her long-sleeve yellow blouse and red capri pants. None of her clothing had been removed, but they were soaked in blood. Cheri Jo had suffered numerous stab wounds to the chest and left shoulder, along with several deep gashes to her face and neck. Her handbag sat undisturbed beside her, indicating this was not a robbery.

Not far from Cheri Jo’s body, investigators found a cheap watch splattered with paint and a footprint made by a particular type of shoe only sold in military outlets. Despite her small 5 ft 3 in frame, Cheri Jo was athletic, and evidence showed she fought back against her attacker. Residue under her fingernails revealed Cheri Jo had deeply scratched her assailant, and the state of the watch indicated she may have ripped it off his arm.

Cheri Jo’s Beetle was parked approximately 75 yards east of her body, her library books still lying in the front seat. The ignition key was in place, but the ignition wiring and distributor had been pulled loose. Windows on both sides of the front seat were partially rolled down, and smudged handprints and fingerprints were found on the car that investigators believed likely belonged to her murderer.

The autopsy revealed that Cheri Jo’s stab wounds had been caused by a knife approximately three-and-a-half inches in length. The cuts to her neck had severed her jugular and larynx, and the force was so brutal that she had nearly been decapitated.

There was no evidence of sexual assault, but further examination of her skull revealed she had been repeatedly kicked in the head. Forensic examiners found skin and brown hair beneath her fingernails. Additional evidence at the scene revealed Cheri Jo had managed to draw blood from her attacker, as trails were found leading away from the crime scene to Terracina Drive, where he presumably ran to after the murder.

Investigation

Within the first twenty-four hours after Cheri Jo’s murder, authorities had interviewed at least 75 people. Many of these witnesses were RCC students, several of whom were able to place Cheri Jo at the library that night. One female student reported seeing a young man, approximately 19 or 20 years old and roughly 5 ft 11 in, lurking across the street from where Cheri Jo’s car was parked and staring at her car near the library’s closing time.

Two separate individuals testified to hearing a woman scream briefly in the direction of Terracina Drive. Another witness reported seeing Cheri Jo’s lime-green Beetle heading toward the RCC campus shortly after 6 p.m., with a bronze 1965 or 1966 Oldsmobile following close behind. Authorities also interviewed military personnel at March Air Force Base due to the unique shoeprint found at the scene.

By November 6th, investigators had managed to rule out all but two people known to be on the RCC campus that night. From the witness statements and autopsy results, authorities placed Cheri Jo’s time of death at approximately 10:15 p.m.

The working theory was that the killer disabled her car, waited, and offered “help” when it wouldn’t start — drawing her away from the lit parking lot before attacking her. The killer may have brandished a weapon or otherwise threatened Cheri Jo after she rolled her windows down, and brought her to a more secluded and dimly lit area before attacking her. With no sexual assault and nothing taken, investigators were hard-pressed to come up with a motive or explanation for the brutal killing.

With the help of 62 RCC students, two librarians, and one custodian, RPD staged a re-enactment of Cheri Jo’s evening in the library. All participants who owned a vehicle were asked to park as close as possible to where they’d parked on the night of the murder, and they were instructed to sit or stand where they’d been inside the library, even as far as wearing the same clothes.

This re-enactment did bring forward more eyewitnesses, but it did not produce any leads that police could use to find Cheri Jo’s killer. Some students remembered seeing a tan-gray Studebaker near the RCC campus that evening, but for whatever reason, police never traced the vehicle to determine its owner.

Cryptic Letters

On November 29th, just shy of one month after the murder of Cheri Jo Bates, two letters were sent to the RPD and the Riverside Press-Enterprise. The identical letters described how the killer had tampered with Cheri Jo’s car before watching from a distance as she repeatedly tried to start the engine until the battery died. He then approached her, offering help, stating that his vehicle was just down the street.2

The two then walked away from the library parking lot a short way before he said, “It’s about time.” According to the letter, Cheri Jo replied, “About time for what?” and he responded, “About time for you to die.” The author claims to have then covered Cheri Jo’s mouth with his hand and pressed a knife up to her neck, walking her over to the dimly lit area where the murder occurred.

The author of these letters claimed that he knew Cheri Jo and insinuated that her killing had been an act of revenge for what he perceived as her brushing off his advances for years. Because many details in the letters, such as tampering with the car, had not been released to the public, authorities initially believed the letters were authentic.

Six months after Cheri Jo’s death, a custodian at RCC discovered a poem of sorts scratched into the underside of a folding desk in the school library. The poem contained multiple graphic allusions to assaulting young women with a knife. Strangely, the language and handwriting resembled what was later seen in the infamous Zodiac letters.

The poem appeared to have been signed with the lowercase initials “r h” at the end. The discovery was made while the desk was in storage, but at the time of the murder, it had been out on the library floor. This poem was retained by investigators as potential circumstantial evidence.

Then, on April 30th, 1967, the Press-Enterprise ran a follow-up story about Cheri Jo’s case. The very next day, RPD and Joseph Bates received handwritten letters that read, “Bates had to die. There will be more.”

Authorities did not believe these letters to be genuine, especially considering the timing, but each was signed with a number or letter, either a “2” or a “Z”, that was impossible to discern. Despite what appeared to be a signature, police felt confident that these letters were a cruel hoax and not communication from the actual murderer.

Zodiac Connection?

In time, some came to believe that Cheri Jo Bates may have been one of the first, or perhaps the very first, victims of the Zodiac Killer.

Famous Zodiac journalist Paul Avery became aware of the potential connection in late 1970. According to Avery, handwriting analysis expert Sherwood Morrill believed the letters sent to the Press-Enterprise and Joseph Bates, and the poem scratched under the desk, were “unquestionably” written by the same person who wrote the infamous Zodiac letters years later.

Then, in March 1971, a letter sent to the Los Angeles Times claiming to be from the Zodiac seemed to claim responsibility for Cheri Jo’s murder, citing his “Riverside activity” and how police had only found the “easy” ones. But this link has always been contested: a 1978 postal-laboratory analysis concluded the Zodiac did not write the Bates material, and Riverside police say there is no evidence tying the murder to the Zodiac, believing instead that the killer was local to Riverside County.3

Meanwhile, Steve Hodel became certain that his father, George Hodel, killed Cheri Jo Bates. Many take Hodel’s certainty with heavy skepticism, as he also claimed his father was the Zodiac Killer, the Lipstick Killer, and the murderer of the Black Dahlia.

Current Status of the Case

In August of 2021, the RPD released an update on the letters. Using DNA evidence left on the letters, authorities identified the author in 2020. The author had contacted investigators in 2016, admitting responsibility for the hoax letters and expressing regret for sending them, explaining that he’d been a troubled teenager and wrote the letters to seek attention.

A few months later, in October 2021, a group of retired police officers, intelligence officers and journalists came forward claiming they’d solved the case. According to the group, Cheri Jo’s murder was linked to the Zodiac, and they identified the Zodiac Killer as Gary Francis Poste.

Their evidence was circumstantial but potentially compelling: Poste was a painter, which could explain the paint on the watch, and he had been receiving treatment for a gunshot wound at March Air Force Base around the time of Cheri Jo’s death, perhaps explaining the unique shoeprint. Poste also had brown hair, and evidence under Cheri Jo’s fingernails proved her assailant had brown hair. Despite this, the RPD was skeptical and did not treat it as a credible lead.

To this day, Cheri Jo Bates’ case remains unsolved. The RPD maintains she was not a victim of the Zodiac Killer. Detective Jim Simons has stated there is still one person of interest in the case, but DNA testing of evidence left at the scene does not match this individual. Investigators agree that Cheri Jo likely knew her killer, and many believe the RPD knows who committed the murder but lacks the evidence to prove it in a court of law.

As the 60th anniversary of Cheri Jo’s death approaches, investigators continue to search for answers that may never come. A 1982 police report identified a suspect, but no arrest was made, and the individual’s name has never been released to the public.4 Riverside Police Chief Larry Gonzalez has made it clear that the case remains active and that authorities are using advances in forensic science and DNA technology to pursue every possible lead.

Closing Thoughts

Ken Welty, a former Ramona High classmate of Cheri Jo, has offered a $100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of her killer. Cheri Jo’s family established a scholarship fund, The Cheri Jo Bates Memorial Endowed Scholarship, for incoming RCC students to honor her legacy.

Anyone with information about the case is encouraged to contact the RPD at cjb@riversideca.gov.

Background

On Thursday night, October 31, 2002, 38-year-old Tina Mayberry attended a Halloween party at Gipson’s Restaurant and Lounge in Douglasville, Georgia. At some point that night, Tina stepped outside briefly. When she returned to the party, she was bleeding from multiple stab wounds. A short time later, Tina died from her wounds at Atlanta Medical Center. 1

For nearly two years, the questions surrounding Tina’s death remained unanswered. Who had attacked her outside the bar? Why had a night of Halloween celebration ended in tragedy? The mystery continued until a convicted murderer named Jeremy Bryan Jones claimed responsibility for her death, connecting Tina’s murder to a much larger investigation surrounding one of Alabama’s most notorious criminals.

Tina Mayberry

Eunice Martina “Tina” Mayberry was born on June 22, 1964, in Atlanta, Georgia. She was the daughter of William Humphrey Mayberry Jr. and Judy Elaine Wyatt. Tina’s father, William, died in 1967, and her mother later married Kenneth Timms. 2

By all accounts, Tina lived an average, unassuming life, which made what happened that Halloween night in 2002 all the more baffling.

Halloween 2002

On the evening of October 31, 2002, Tina Mayberry went to Gipson’s Bar to attend a Halloween party. Inside the bar, patrons gathered wearing costumes, socializing, and taking part in the festivities. Like everyone else inside the bar that night, she appeared to be enjoying what should have been a fun evening.

At some point during the night, Tina left the bar. What happened after she walked outside would remain a mystery for years. Shortly after leaving, Tina returned to Gipson’s Bar severely injured. She had suffered multiple stab wounds and was in critical condition. The party immediately came to an end as customers and employees rushed to help her. Emergency services were contacted, and Tina was transported to the hospital for treatment.

For investigators, the situation was extremely difficult. Tina was the only person who could potentially explain what had happened outside the bar, but her injuries were too severe for her to provide them with the information they needed.

Tina Mayberry died in the hospital from severe blood loss. She was 38 years old at the time of her death. What had begun as an ordinary Halloween celebration was now a homicide investigation. Despite the party that night, there were no witnesses or suspects. The person responsible had disappeared into the night.

For years, Tina Mayberry’s murder remained unsolved. But eventually, investigators would uncover a connection to a man whose own criminal history would make him a prime suspect in Tina’s death.

That man was Jeremy Bryan Jones.

A Violent History

Jeremy Bryan Jones was born on April 12, 1973, in Miami, Oklahoma. Long before his name became connected to Tina Mayberry’s murder, Jones had already acquired a violent criminal record. By the late 1990s, Jones became increasingly involved in crime and had frequent run-ins with law enforcement. 3

His behavior escalated over time, including arrests for rape, assault, and drug possession. After a warrant was issued for his arrest on rape charges, he fled Oklahoma. After leaving Oklahoma, Jones eventually landed in Joplin, Missouri.

In Joplin, Jones met a woman whose son, John Paul Chapman, was in prison. He persuaded her to sell him Chapman's identification and Social Security card for about $50. In December 2000, Jones left Missouri as "John Paul Chapman" and eventually settled in Alabama — his real history hidden behind a stolen name. 4

However, his past would eventually catch up with him. In 2004, Jones was arrested in Alabama in connection with the murder of 43-year-old Lisa Marie Nichols.

The Murder of Lisa Nichols

In September 2004, Jones arrived in Turnerville, a small community near Satsuma, Alabama, looking for work in the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan, which had caused widespread destruction across the region. While there, Jones found construction and repair work for Mark and Kim Bentley. After Jones explained that he also needed a place to stay, Mark let him live in a trailer on their property with Scooter Coleman, a family relative.

While searching a closet for batteries, Jones found a .25-caliber handgun and kept it. On September 17, 2004, with Coleman and the Bentleys out of the house for the day, Jones took the gun and went to the home of a neighbor, 45-year-old Lisa Marie Nichols. He raped her at gunpoint, shot her three times, then placed her body in the bathtub and set it on fire before returning to the Bentleys' as if nothing had happened.

At the time, no one immediately knew what had happened inside Lisa’s home. The following day, Lisa’s family grew concerned when she failed to show up for work and stopped answering their calls. Lisa’s daughters, Jennifer Murphy and Amber Nichols, along with her son-in-law, Todd McKerchie, traveled to Turnerville to check on her.

Because the area was still without power after Hurricane Ivan, McKerchie entered Lisa’s home with a flashlight to search for her. During the search, he discovered Lisa’s charred remains inside the residence. After finding the body, McKerchie and Lisa’s daughters went to the Bentley residence and asked Kim Bentley to contact police.

According to reports, Jones showed little visible reaction after learning that a body had been discovered and did not appear willing to provide much assistance during interviews with detectives from the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigation and Arrest

The investigation soon focused on the man that the Bentleys knew as John Paul Chapman. Three .25-caliber bullets in the house led them to Mark Bentley's handgun, which ballistics tied to the murder. When questioned, Mark Bentley admitted that he owned a handgun and handed the weapon over to investigators. Scooter Coleman said the gun had likely been taken by "Chapman." 5

The gun was examined, and several details connected it to Lisa’s murder. Investigators discovered signs indicating that the weapon had been recently fired, including gunpowder traces, soot residue, and bullet casings. Further testing confirmed that the handgun was the same weapon used in the murder of Lisa Nichols.

On September 19, Jones fled Turnersville. While authorities searched for him, information about the suspect was shared with law enforcement agencies in neighboring states. This led to a major breakthrough when the Missouri Attorney General's office found that the suspect's date of birth and Social Security number belonged to a John Paul Chapman who was serving a prison sentence in Missouri.

When confronted, Chapman’s mother revealed that she had sold her son’s personal information to a man named Jeremy Bryan Jones, allowing Jones to assume his identity and disappear. On September 21, 2004, Jones was arrested in Mobile, Alabama. Investigators then obtained fingerprint records connected to Jones’ previous arrest in Miami, Oklahoma, in 1990, confirming that the man arrested in Alabama was not John Paul Chapman. He was Jeremy Bryan Jones.

Initially, Jones denied involvement in Lisa Nichols’ murder. However, after forensic evidence connected him to the crime, Jones changed his story and admitted responsibility. Jones later claimed that he had committed the murder while under the influence of methamphetamine. However, his statements changed several times during questioning, creating inconsistencies in the details he provided.

The arrest of Jeremy Bryan Jones did more than solve the murder of Lisa Nichols. It opened the door to a much larger investigation. Though they did not know it at the time, authorities would soon learn the truth about Jeremy Jones’ deadly past.

Confessions

As investigators continued questioning Jones about his past, he began making claims about other crimes. Jones claimed responsibility for as many as 21 murders, including the unsolved 2002 Halloween night murder of Tina Mayberry. 6

According to Jones, he was inside Gipson’s that night when he encountered Tina during a Halloween celebration. He claimed that she was dressed as Betty Boop and that after speaking with her, he convinced her to leave the bar with him. Jones stated that once they were outside, he assaulted Tina before stabbing her several times in the chest and stomach.

For nearly two years, Tina Mayberry’s murder had no suspect. There were no witnesses who could identify the attacker, and Tina was unable to provide investigators with a description of the person responsible before she died. However, after Jones’ arrest, the owner and employees of Gipson’s Bar identified him as a regular customer at the establishment around the time of Tina’s death.

In fact, a year after the murder of Tina Mayberry, Jones, who was still living in the Douglasville area, was arrested for disorderly conduct. His fingerprints were run through the Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS). However, due to an error, the system incorrectly identified his fingerprints, and after paying a fine, Jones was allowed to leave. He left Georgia soon after.

The confession brought new attention to Tina’s case and provided investigators with a possible explanation for what had happened on October 31, 2002. However, unlike the murder of Lisa Nichols, Tina Mayberry’s death would never result in a separate trial or conviction.

Trial and Conviction of Jeremy Jones

While Jones’ statements about Tina Mayberry and other crimes attracted attention, the case for which he stood trial was the murder of Lisa Nichols. Jones’ trial was originally scheduled to begin on August 15, 2005. However, proceedings were delayed after his attorneys requested that he undergo a mental evaluation before standing trial.

The evaluation determined that although Jones had mental impairments, he was considered legally sane and capable of understanding the proceedings against him. The trial officially began on October 19, 2005, in Mobile County, Alabama.

The prosecution presented several pieces of evidence against Jones, including his own confession, fingerprints found during the investigation, testimony from Scooter Coleman, the handgun used in Lisa Nichols’ murder, and DNA evidence linking blood found on Jones’ clothing to Lisa Nichols.

During the trial, Jones changed his position and recanted his previous confessions. However, the jury did not accept his claims, and Jones was found guilty of the murder of Lisa Nichols.

Sentencing

Following Jones’ conviction, the Mobile County Prosecutor’s Office sought the death penalty. Jones’ attorneys argued that he should receive a sentence of life imprisonment without parole, stating that he was under the influence of drugs and suffering from mental impairments at the time of the crime.

However, the court found these mitigating factors insufficient to forgo the death penalty. On December 1, 2005, Jeremy Bryan Jones was sentenced to death. Although the conviction brought justice for Lisa Nichols’ family, questions remained about the other crimes Jones claimed responsibility for.

Questions Remain

For Tina Mayberry's family, Jones's confession provided an answer, but not a verdict. Although Jones claimed responsibility for Tina’s murder, the case never resulted in a separate conviction. Unlike the murder of Lisa Nichols, where Jones was tried and sentenced, Tina’s death remained connected to him only through his confession and statements made after his arrest. Legally, no one has been convicted of the murder.

Tina Mayberry was laid to rest at Sunrise Memorial Gardens in Lithia Springs, Georgia.

Following Jones' conviction for the murder of Lisa Nichols, He was transferred to the Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore, Alabama, where he remained on the state’s death row. Despite his conviction for Lisa Nichols’ murder, questions continued to surround the other crimes Jones claimed responsibility for.

Over the years, Jones has disputed many of his original claims. He later stated that he was only responsible for Nichols’ murder and that some of his additional confessions were false. Jones claimed he made those statements to get better conditions while in jail.

His attorney, Habib Yazdi, supported those claims, arguing that Jones had used the attention surrounding his case to obtain privileges, including additional phone access and improved treatment while incarcerated. Because of these conflicting statements, Jones’ involvement in the other crimes remains in question.

For Tina Mayberry’s family, however, the most important question had always been what happened on Halloween night 2002. Tina’s story is a reminder that behind every investigation is a person whose life mattered, and a family that deserves answers.

Background

Between 2019 and 2023, Jon Hallford, owner of the Return to Nature Funeral Home in Penrose, Colorado, and his former wife, Carie Hallford, concealed nearly 200 decomposing bodies inside their facility.1 Many of the bodies were illegally left in a building with no ventilation or refrigeration, and no lawful burial plan. Some grieving families were even given urns filled with pulverized concrete rather than the ashes of their loved ones.

This disturbing pattern of abuse reportedly went on for several years until the shocking conditions were discovered. In October 2023, a putrid odor drew investigators to the building, where the remains of adults, children, and infants had been stacked for years in unrefrigerated rooms. The couple later pleaded guilty to abusing 191 corpses. 2

Return to Nature

Jon and Carie Hallford opened the Return to Nature Funeral Home with the intention of providing “natural burials.” The concept is simple and has a long history. A body is placed directly into the earth or water without embalming chemicals or non-biodegradable materials, allowing it to decompose and return to the earth naturally.

Their clients were promised that loved ones would be laid to rest in biodegradable caskets or simple shrouds, or, if they chose cremation, their ashes would be returned to the family.

For five years, the Hallfords operated under Colorado's notoriously lax oversight. Unlike most states, Colorado did not require routine inspections of funeral homes or enforce strict licensing for operators. This loophole allowed the Hallfords to operate unchecked until October 2023, when the consequences of this regulatory failure became horrifyingly clear.

House of Horrors

In October 2023, neighbors of the Return to Nature Funeral Home began to complain about a ‘putrid’ odor. Situated near the funeral home were a post office, a few homes, and several empty lots with parked semitrailers. There were people nearby all the time.

On October 3, Detective Sgt. Michael Jolliffe and Laura Allen, the county’s deputy coroner, went to the Penrose facility to investigate. Although they could smell a rank odor, they were unable to get inside the building. However, they did see a dark fluid seeping underneath one of the doors, which looked suspiciously like the fluid from a decaying body.

Allen contacted the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies, which oversees funeral home operations. An inspector, Joseph Berry, arranged to meet with Jon Hallford the next day. Though Hallford was not there when Berry arrived, the inspector was able to see what looked like stacked body bags through a gap in a covered window — it was enough for a judge to issue a search warrant.

On October 5, investigators in protective suits entered the building. They found dozens of rooms where bodies had been stored, sometimes for years, in an unrefrigerated warehouse-style space. So many- nearly 190 in all- that they blocked doorways.

The dead included adults, children, infants, and fetuses, kept at room temperature; some in body bags, others wrapped in sheets and duct tape, many half-exposed on gurneys or with no covering at all. The whole area swarmed with bugs and maggots.

Twenty-three had death dates from 2019 and sixty-one from 2020, according to FBI agent Andrew Cohen. Investigators identified the remains by fingerprints, hospital bracelets, medical implants, and DNA. Some were so badly decomposed that identification was impossible.

Grieving families were left to deal with the trauma of the deception and the emotional harm. One man suffered PTSD after learning his mother’s ashes were not spread in Hawaii. Instead, her body had been left to decay beneath a dozen others.

Investigation

For many, the question was why. Why did the Hallfords not properly bury the bodies or practice lawful cremation? Carie Hallford was the public face of the operation, meeting with customers and charging more than $1,200 for ‘cremation expenses.’ "She fed the monster by lying to the customers and taking their money," said Chief Deputy District Attorney Rachael Powell.

Jon took care of removing the bodies and then placing them in the warehouse at the Penrose facility as well as another one in Colorado Springs. The money they charged their victims fed their lavish lifestyle.

Once the operation came to light, investigators found more disturbing evidence. Instead of proper disposal of the remains, they allowed the bodies to accumulate in various states of decay or decomposition inside the funeral home’s facility. Jon took steps to hide his activities by blocking windows and doors, restricting access to the building, and making excuses to explain the odor of decay coming from the site.

The Hallfords knew the reckoning was coming when investigators seized their phones, which contained incriminating texts. Some texts discussed possible ways to destroy evidence. In a 2020 exchange, Jon wrote, "Option A) build a new machine ASAP. B) dig a big hole and use lye. Where? C) dig a small hole and build a large fire. Where? D) I go to prison, which is probably going to happen."

In another series of texts, Jon callously orders a cheeseburger meal after saying he’d gotten “people juice” while moving bodies and needed to clean up before he ate.

In November 2023, Jon and Carie Hallford fled to Oklahoma to avoid prosecution. In 2024, they were arrested and extradited to Colorado. Both pleaded guilty to 191 counts of abuse of a corpse as well as defrauding the Small Business Administration (SBA) of nearly $900,000 through fraudulent COVID-19 loan applications.3

Prosecution and Sentencing

The charges against the Hallfords were staggering. From September 2019 to October 2023, prosecutors alleged that Jon Hallford failed to cremate or bury the bodies despite collecting more than $130,000 from families for services never provided.

Jon routinely filed death certificates with the state, falsifying the method of disposal, and misrepresented decedents' identities to third-party crematories, producing inaccurate records. In some cases, the remains were never cremated or buried.

Some families received urns of dry concrete mix instead of cremated remains. On at least two occasions, the wrong body was delivered for burial, with the error concealed from the next of kin. One recovered body — a former Army sergeant first class believed buried in a veterans' cemetery — turned out, when exhumed, to be a woman; the deceased veteran was later reburied with full military honors at Pikes Peak National Cemetery.

"Jon Hallford's criminal fraud was a vehicle to exploit grieving families so he could give himself a lavish life with luxury cars and expensive vacations," said U.S. Attorney Peter McNeilly. "His actions were not just fraudulent, but deeply inhumane. We offer our condolences to the families who continue to suffer because of Mr. Hallford’s crimes, and we hope this case brings them some measure of peace.”4

District Judge Eric Bentley rejected a plea agreement for a 20-year sentence in November 2025, saying that it was too lenient.5 Instead, on February 6, 2026, the judge sentenced Jon Hallford to 40 years in prison. On April 24, 2026, Carie Hallford, who had apologized in court and said she deserved to be punished, was sentenced to 30 years in prison, to run concurrently with an 18-year federal sentence, plus $1 million in restitution. 6

The couple later divorced; Carie said her marriage had been abusive and that she feared Jon's control.

Aftermath

After the Hallford trial, Colorado's funeral home industry underwent widespread reform. For years, Colorado had some of the weakest funeral service laws in the nation; funeral home directors didn’t even need a license. That lack of oversight allowed several funeral home operations to engage in shocking misconduct that went undetected for years.

The Hallfords were not even the first such scandal. Between 2010 and 2018, Megan Hess and Shirley Koch, the owners of the Sunset Mesa Funeral Home in Montrose, lied to hundreds of families, promising cremations and instead selling the bodies to brokers who supplied human remains for research. Hess received a 20-year prison sentence, and Koch received 15 years.7

After the Return to Nature scandal, the building was condemned by the EPA as a toxic-waste site and demolished in 2024. On May 24, 2024, Governor Jared Polis signed a series of laws requiring background checks, formal education, and stricter oversight for anyone working in the funeral industry. It was a direct response to the Hallford case.

While new laws and oversight cannot undo the pain and trauma caused by the Hallfords’ actions, they can at least place guardrails within the industry to help ensure that something so vile does not happen again.

On October 31, 1985, 11-year-old Mary Stiles disappeared from her family’s apartment complex in Baytown, Texas, after leaving to go trick-or-treating with her friends. When she didn't return home for dinner that evening, Mary’s family grew worried. After several hours of searching, they contacted the police, and a large-scale search began.

Authorities attempted to retrace Mary’s steps as well as investigate and rule out all potential suspects. Despite these efforts, the investigation turned up nothing. Then, nine days later, a mysterious note arrived at the Baytown Police Department. The letter would change the nature of the case and put investigators on the trail of a cold-blooded child killer.

Who was Mary Stiles?

Mary Lorene Stiles was born on November 14, 1973.1 In the fall of 1985, Mary was an 11-year-old girl living with her family at the Woodhollow Apartments in Baytown, Texas. Her family included her father, Gary Stiles; her stepmother, Mary Stuart; her older sister, Carrie; and her brother.

Mary was a sixth-grade student at Horace Mann Junior School. Mary had a good friend who also lived at the Woodhollow Apartments. Her friend had an older stepbrother, 16-year-old Joseph Lee Fordham, who would occasionally walk Mary home from school.

Halloween 1985

That year, Halloween fell on a Thursday. For her costume, Mary dressed as a baby in peach-colored Care Bear pajamas and carried a large plastic baby bottle, with her hair in pigtails, making her easy to spot among the children moving around the complex. Around 4 p.m. that afternoon, Mary went to the Apartment Complex’s main office, where they were handing out candy. She then joined some friends as they began trick-or-treating. 2

As evening approached, an uneasy worry began to grow as no one in the family had heard from Mary for several hours. As dinnertime came and went with no word from her, panic began to set in. Her family began searching the area for any sign of her. They asked friends and neighbors if anyone had seen Mary or knew where she was, but nobody seemed to know anything.

Around 9 p.m., the family called the Baytown Police Department, and the official search began that night. Investigators had limited information, so they began their search at the Woodhollow Apartments and the surrounding area, trying to retrace where she might have gone after she was last seen.

Initial Search

The search continued the following day. Officers searched the grounds around the complex and the wooded lot behind it, near a pond about 150 yards from the apartments. They found nothing. At that point, there was still hope that she might be somewhere else and would return home safely.

However, there was also reason to fear, as Baytown was still dealing with the memory of a tragic child murder that had happened only weeks earlier. On September 10, 1985, 11-year-old Carolyn Hahn had been killed in nearby Mont Belvieu. The recent nature of the crime, as well as the close proximity, raised concerns that the cases could be connected.

Both girls were 11-year-old sixth-graders and lived in apartment complexes in the same general area. Their fathers also worked for the same Baytown plumbing company. It would later be determined that the two cases were unrelated, with a family friend of the Hahns confessing to Carolyn's murder in 1988.

By Thursday, November 7, a week after Mary vanished, the Baytown Sun reported that police still had "no definite leads." The town pooled money for information, and rewards were posted: $10,000 from a local restaurant, $2,000 from the company that owned the apartment complex, and $1,000 from Crime Stoppers.

Mary’s Body Found

On November 9, an envelope arrived at the Baytown Police Department marked "Urgent-Mary Stiles." Inside was a Baytown Sun news clipping about her disappearance and a rough, hand-drawn map of the land behind the Woodhollow Apartments. According to later reporting, the note began with the words "I killed her," and went on to describe where she had been attacked and gave directions to where her body had been left.

The message was disturbing because it seemed to contain information only someone closely connected to the crime would know. The letter was cryptically signed “The Madman who wishes he never was.” For reasons unknown, it appeared that Mary’s killer wanted police to find her body.

Officers followed the map into the woods behind the apartment complex. The location was near a mosquito-filled pond, about 150 yards from the Woodhollow Apartments, where they had searched earlier and found nothing. There they found Mary's body hidden under leaves and tree limbs, still wearing her Care Bear pajamas. The discovery brought a terrible end to the nine-day search.

Mary's body had been partially buried and had remained outdoors for several days, so the body was badly decomposed, and police had to use her fingerprints to confirm who she was. On November 10, the Harris County Medical Examiner's Office in Houston completed an autopsy.

The autopsy revealed that Mary had been stabbed, strangled, and asphyxiated. Investigators found that she had been stabbed four times in the neck and a thick blue-and-white sock had been forced down her throat. The sock was later identified as one Mary had been wearing.3 There were also reportedly defensive injuries to her hand, which showed that Mary had tried to fight back.

For Mary's family, the discovery was devastating. For nine days they had lived with uncertainty, hoping that every knock on the door or telephone call might bring good news. Instead, the search ended with the confirmation that their daughter and sister was dead. The family now had to face not only their grief but also the knowledge that Mary's killer was still out there.

Mysterious Letters

On December 3, Baytown police received another mysterious letter. In it, the writer seemed to express regret and hinted that he was struggling with what he had done. It arrived with another Baytown Sun clipping, indicating that he was following the news coverage.

The following day, December 4, another letter arrived. This one was much more alarming because it contained a direct threat. The letter said, “There will be another before I die,” and once again, a Baytown Sun clipping was included, referring to a $10,000 reward for information about Mary's murder. It was as if the killer had decided that the investigation itself had become part of a game.

Then, on December 5, the fourth letter arrived, announcing that “the game begins now” and telling investigators they needed to solve a series of clues. The writer suggested that correct answers would reveal a name, while wrong answers could cost someone a life. The letter also told investigators to look beyond the obvious words and sentences for the answers.

The messages contained references to mythology, riddles, and hidden meanings that investigators believed were designed to lead them toward the writer's identity. The writer demanded that the answers be printed in the Baytown Sun, and police began planting replies in the paper to keep him talking.

Investigation

The FBI became involved in the case as experts examined the correspondence, studying what the writing might reveal about the person behind it. They carefully preserved the envelopes and letters and began examining them for fingerprints, handwriting, and other clues that might reveal who had handled them.

They also studied the language and subject matter of the messages, hoping the strange mythological references and the writer's word choice would reveal his age, education, and personality.

As detectives studied the correspondence, they also began building a list of possible suspects. The behavioral assessment suggested that the writer might be younger than investigators had first expected, possibly a juvenile. Investigators believed the writer had shown signs of guilt or regret and might be someone whose behavior had changed after Mary's murder.

In response, Detective Harry Gore began paying closer attention to young men who lived around Woodhollow Apartments and attended Ross S. Sterling High School. At the same time, detectives began watching mailboxes around the apartment complex. They wanted to catch the writer in the act of sending another message.

Eventually, the surveillance produced the breakthrough investigators needed. In December 1985, a camera recorded a teenager quietly dropping a letter into one of them. An assistant principal at Ross S. Sterling High School identified him as 16-year-old sophomore Joseph Lee Fordham. It was later learned that Fordham lived in the same apartment complex as the Stiles family and that his younger stepsister had been friends with Mary.

While the surveillance footage did not prove that Fordham had killed Mary, it gave investigators a strong reason to take a closer look at him. In the following days, authorities observed Fordham throw away a garbage bag, and after looking inside, they found riddles and other material connected to the letters. Fordham’s palm and fingerprints also matched the letters.

Arrest and Confession

By mid-December, authorities felt that they had enough evidence to charge Joseph Fordham. With search and arrest warrants in hand, police arrested Fordham as he stepped off his school bus at Woodhollow. In the Fordham family apartment, they found newspaper clippings about the killing, books on mythology, bloodstained clothes and shoes, and a pocketknife that police believed was the murder weapon.

After his arrest, Fordham confessed to killing Mary Stiles, but the confession never answered the key question— why? Reports said he had developed an infatuation with her. The resulting trial never produced a motive for what happened behind the Woodhollow Apartments that Halloween night.

Fordham was charged with Mary's murder. Because his lawyers planned to argue that he was mentally ill, doctors examined him before trial.

Trial and Sentencing

Joseph Fordham’s trial began in late April 1987, before Judge Joseph Guarino. Though he had been 16 at the time of his arrest, Fordham, who was 17 at the opening of his murder trial, was charged as an adult.

The prosecution’s evidence included the letters sent to police, the surveillance of Fordham at the mailbox, fingerprint analysis, testimony from law-enforcement officers and FBI agents, and other evidence gathered during the investigation. The letters were especially important because they had helped police locate Mary's body and eventually led them to Fordham.

The defense didn't dispute the evidence; rather, they argued about Fordham’s state of mind. According to the Baytown Sun, Fordham had described strange feelings and hearing voices around the time of the killing. Defense psychologist Jerome Sherman testified that Fordham was legally insane when Mary was killed, basing his opinion in part on what Fordham had told him about his thoughts at the time.

The prosecution challenged that interpretation with testimony from other mental-health professionals. Psychiatrist Dr. Ninfa Cavazos told the court that although Fordham had mental problems, she believed he was sane at the time of the killing and was sane when she evaluated him.

Another clinical psychologist, Jerome Brown, also testified that Fordham was not legally insane and understood the difference between right and wrong. The conflicting opinions left the jury with two very different accounts of what had been happening inside the teenager's mind.

In May 1987, after about 10 hours of deliberation, the jury rejected the insanity defense and found Fordham guilty of murder. Prosecutors had asked for life. The jury gave him 25 years. Mary's father said he was disappointed by the sentence but pleased with the verdict, and he thanked the officers and prosecutors who had worked the case.

Fordham's lawyers moved quickly to appeal. Attorney Roger Bridgwater argued that the juvenile certification was handled improperly and that Fordham was treated unfairly as a result. He said the appeal was not about putting the teenager back on the street and hoped Fordham would get psychiatric help.

Early Release and Parole

For several years after the trial, Mary's family had to live with the knowledge that the person convicted of killing her would eventually become eligible for parole. Twenty-five years sounded like a long time, but it did not necessarily mean that Fordham would remain in prison for the entire period.

As the first parole review approached in 1991, the Stiles family once again found themselves having to speak about Mary's death and explain why they believed Fordham should remain in prison.

Mary's stepmother, Mary Stuart-Stiles, began circulating a petition asking the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles not to release Fordham. She also encouraged community members to write directly to the parole board and explain why they believed he should remain in prison.

Meanwhile, Fordham's attorney told the press that his client had changed. He had earned his GED, was nearing a bachelor's degree, had received mental-health treatment, and had dropped part of his appeal so he could continue his rehabilitation program.

Due to severe overcrowding in the Texas prison system, Fordham was released on parole after serving less than eight years. Understandably, Mary's family found Fordham’s early release difficult to accept. Instead of serving the majority of his sentence behind bars, Fordham was paroled after less than eight years.4

For Carrie Stiles, Mary's older sister, the release became something she could not simply ignore. Carrie had been a teenager when Mary was murdered, and the case had changed the direction of her own life, influencing her to become a journalist. She said that she struggled for decades with anger toward Fordham and with the fact that he had been released so early.

Carrie eventually decided that she needed to know where Fordham was after his release. Because he had been a minor when he was arrested, locating him as an adult was not easy. She eventually found his grandmother and kept track of Fordham from a distance.

In 1998, Fordham’s release was revoked after he moved to Indiana without permission and failed to report to his parole officer for three months, causing him to return to prison. In March 2004, he was paroled again and settled in Georgia, where he lived with his grandmother under supervision.

"It Just Wasn't Long Enough"

In August 2014, Fordham was 45 years old and weeks away from his parole ending in September. In the early hours of August 11, he left for his job at a bus plant in Fort Valley, Georgia, and vanished. The Bleckley County Sheriff's Office issued a missing-person bulletin. U.S. Marshals located him at a hotel in Warner Robins, Georgia, and he was taken into custody for violating his parole.5

Fordham had attempted to take his own life shortly before authorities found him, and he was taken back into custody. At the time, Carrie was working at the San Antonio Express-News when she saw his photograph. The timing surprised her because she knew that his parole was almost over.

Through Fordham's parole officer, Carrie was able to question him as to why he had disappeared and attempted to take his life. His answer surprised her. "It just wasn't long enough," he said, referring to the amount of time he served in prison for Mary’s murder.6

Hearing that he felt his sentence had not been long enough changed something inside Carrie. For years, she had also believed Fordham had escaped punishment for what he did to Mary. The anger she had carried since she was a teenager began to lose some of its hold. She later described the decision to forgive him as powerful and said it felt like an incredible weight had been lifted from her shoulders.

Carrie spoke publicly about that forgiveness on Investigation Discovery's On the Case with Paula Zahn. The episode, "Deadly Riddle," aired on July 16, 2017, and revisited the case through interviews, old photographs, and dramatizations.7 For Carrie, it meant opening a part of her life she had kept private for three decades.

She did it because she believed the human cost behind the headlines was worth telling. She said forgiving Fordham didn't mean forgetting Mary or excusing what had happened. It meant refusing to let her anger at him consume her life. By sharing her story, Carrie ensured her little sister’s memory would live on through those who knew and loved her.

On October 17, 1992, 16-year-old Japanese exchange student Yoshihiro Hattori was shot and killed outside a home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, after he and a friend mistakenly went to the wrong house while looking for a Halloween party.1 What began as a teenager's excitement at an unfamiliar American tradition quickly became an international controversy.

Crossing Cultures

Yoshihiro Hattori was born on November 22, 1975, in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. He was the second of three children raised by his father, Masaichi Hattori, an engineer, and his mother, Mieko.2 As a teen, Yoshihiro attended Aichi Prefectural Asahigaoka High School in Nagoya. Friends and classmates remembered him as a cheerful, outgoing young man who enjoyed connecting with others.

He had a natural curiosity about people and cultures beyond Japan. Like many young people who dream of seeing the world, he wanted to understand other cultures directly. In 1992, that opportunity came when Yoshihiro was selected to participate in an international exchange program that brought him to the United States. He arrived with the excitement and curiosity of a teenager beginning a new adventure.

In August 1992, 16-year-old Yoshihiro Hattori arrived in the United States as part of the American Field Service (AFS) student exchange program. His journey was made possible through the exchange program and a scholarship provided by the Morita Foundation.

Yoshihiro was met by his host family, the Haymakers, in Dallas, Texas. The family welcomed him and drove him from Dallas to their home in Baton Rouge, where he would spend his exchange year experiencing American life as a member of their family. He lived as a homestay student with Richard and Holley Haymaker and their teenage son, Webb. Richard was a college professor, and Holley was a physician.

The language, customs, and daily life were all new, but Yoshihiro embraced his new surroundings. For him, the exchange was about connection and experience, not just education. Among the American traditions he was eager to experience was Halloween.

October 17, 1992

On the evening of Saturday, October 17, 1992, Yoshihiro and his homestay brother, Webb Haymaker, set out for what should have been a fun night out. They had been invited to a Halloween party for Japanese exchange students in East Baton Rouge Parish.

Yoshihiro had dressed as Tony Manero, the John Travolta character from the 1977 film Saturday Night Fever, in a white tuxedo-style costume. Webb, recovering from a swimming-pool injury, wore a neck brace and bandages as an "accident victim." Driving through the neighborhood, the two believed they had found the right place.

From the outside, the house appeared to match what they were looking for. The Halloween decorations made it seem like the home was connected to the celebration they were attending.

However, the two teenagers had mistakenly arrived at the home of 30-year-old Rodney Peairs and his wife, Bonnie. Inside, the Peairses were spending a quiet evening at home and were not expecting any visitors.

A Deadly Misunderstanding

Yoshihiro and Webb rang the doorbell and waited, but no one answered. Instead, Bonnie Peairs opened the side door and saw Webb standing a few yards away. Bonnie, unaware of what was happening, simply saw two strangers in costumes at her home at night.

Webb tried to explain the reason they had come to the house. However, the situation quickly became confusing. Communication was difficult. Yoshihiro was still learning English, and although he could understand basic conversation, he was not completely comfortable communicating in a stressful situation.

The two boys tried to explain that they were looking for a party, but their message wasn't immediately understood. According to her later testimony, Bonnie became frightened when Yoshihiro allegedly came quickly around the corner toward her; she shut the door and told her husband to get his gun.

Realizing something was wrong, Yoshihiro and Webb turned back toward their car. Before they could leave, Rodney Peairs opened the carport door holding a .44 Magnum revolver. According to later testimony, Yoshihiro turned toward him and said, "We're here for the party," and Peairs pointed the gun and shouted, "Freeze!"

Webb saw the gun and tried to warn Yoshihiro, who was not wearing his contact lenses that night and may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation. Yoshihiro was carrying a camera, which Peairs later said he mistook for a weapon. When he was about five feet away, Peairs fired once and struck Yoshihiro in the chest. Peairs then retreated inside.

Webb ran to a neighbor for help and returned to find Yoshihiro on his back, gravely wounded. Neighbors tried to help as they waited for paramedics; Bonnie Peairs reportedly told a neighbor calling for aid to "go away," and the couple did not come out until police arrived about forty minutes later.

Emergency responders eventually arrived and rushed Yoshihiro to receive medical treatment. The bullet had caused severe internal injuries, passing through the upper and lower lobes of his left lung and exiting near his seventh rib. Despite emergency efforts, Yoshihiro died in the ambulance minutes after being shot.

A 16-year-old who had traveled thousands of miles to experience American life was gone because of a misunderstanding at a stranger's door.

International Incident and Investigation

The death of Yoshihiro Hattori quickly became more than a local tragedy. In Japan, where civilian gun ownership is tightly restricted, the killing of an unarmed teenager caused widespread shock and grief, and raised hard questions on both sides of the Pacific: Could it have been prevented? Was Peairs genuinely in danger? When fear takes over, how should the law assign responsibility?3

That Peairs fired the shot was never in dispute; the question was whether he was legally justified. After initial questioning by Baton Rouge police, Rodney Peairs was released without charges. They determined he was within his rights against what they viewed as a trespasser.

The decision drew immediate criticism. After protests from Louisiana Governor Edwin Edwards and the Japanese consul in New Orleans, authorities reconsidered, and in November 1992, Rodney Peairs was charged with manslaughter. Peairs maintained he believed he was protecting his family.

As the case moved toward trial, both sides prepared to present very different explanations of what happened that evening during the brief encounter outside the Peairs residence.

Trial of Rodney Peairs

Rodney Peairs's trial began in May 1993 in Baton Rouge. The prosecution, led by District Attorney Doug Moreau, argued the shooting was not self-defense but a tragic overreaction: Peairs was a 6-foot-2 armed adult; Yoshihiro, an unarmed, roughly 130-pound 16-year-old who had never entered the house, threatened no one, and had simply come to the wrong address.

According to the prosecution, Yoshihiro approached the home only because he and Webb Haymaker had mistaken the Peairs residence for the Halloween party they were trying to attend. The prosecution argued that even if Yoshihiro’s movement toward the carport had been unexpected, Peairs was not justified in using deadly force against a teenager who had not threatened him, had not entered the house, and had not shown any intention of harming anyone.

In contrast, the defense argued Peairs reacted to what he believed was an immediate threat, amplified by his wife's panic. Bonnie Peairs testified about the moment she saw Yoshihiro approach:

“He was coming real fast towards me. I had never had somebody come at me like that before. I was terrified.”

She described Rodney retrieving a handgun with a laser sight from a bedroom suitcase, and added:

“There was no thinking involved. I wish I could have thought. If I could have just thought.”

Rodney Peairs testified that Yoshihiro’s movements frightened him:

“It was a person, coming from behind the car, moving real fast. At that point, I pointed the gun and hollered, ‘Freeze!’ The person kept coming toward me, moving very erratically… I remember him laughing. I was scared to death. This person was not gonna stop, he was gonna do harm to me.”

The defense argued that Rodney Peairs did not have time to carefully analyze the situation and that he acted based on what he believed was a dangerous threat to himself and his family.

Peairs testified that he fired when Yoshihiro was about five feet away, and told the court, "I'm very sorry that any of this ever happened." The prosecution countered that Yoshihiro was unarmed, in costume, and carrying a camera, and that his limited English and poor eyesight that night may have kept him from understanding the command. A police detective who interviewed Peairs after the shooting also testified that Peairs had told him: "Boy, I messed up; I made a mistake."

Verdict

After a seven-day trial, the jury reached a verdict on May 23, 1993. After about three hours of deliberation, they found Ronald Peairs not guilty of manslaughter. Some courtroom spectators applauded. For Yoshihiro's family and many who had followed the case, the acquittal was devastating and bewildering.

Though the trial was finished, the debate over Yoshihiro Hattori’s death was far from over.

Civil Trial

In September 1994, Yoshihiro’s parents filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Rodney Peairs and his wife, Bonnie, seeking accountability for the loss of their son through the civil court system.

Unlike a criminal trial, where prosecutors must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, a civil case operates under a different standard of proof. The question was not whether Rodney Peairs had committed a crime, but whether he had acted negligently and whether his actions contributed to Yoshihiro’s death.

The Hattori family’s attorneys argued that Rodney and Bonnie Peairs had acted unreasonably during the encounter. They argued the situation could have been handled differently.

Rather than confronting the teenagers with a firearm, a safer response would have been to stay inside the home and contact police. They claimed that Peairs, who was much larger than the unarmed Yoshihiro, could have physically restrained him if he believed there was a threat.

The court found Rodney Peairs liable for Yoshihiro's death and awarded his family $650,000 in damages ($653,077.85 with interest and costs).4 Peairs's homeowner's insurer paid its $100,000 policy limit, leaving Peairs responsible for the remaining $550,000.

The Louisiana Court of Appeal upheld the judgment in October 1995, and the Louisiana Supreme Court declined further review in January 1996. By 2022, reporting indicated, the Hattori family had received only about $100,000.

Fight for Change

Yoshihiro's parents chose to use their grief to enact change. In November 1993, they met President Bill Clinton at the White House and presented a petition signed by roughly 1.7 million Japanese citizens calling for stronger U.S. gun controls; a separate petition of about 120,000 Americans went to Congress.

The Hattoris and the Haymakers backed the Brady Bill, which required background checks and a waiting period for handgun purchases. President Clinton signed the bill into law as the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act on November 30, 1993.

Walter Mondale, then the U.S. ambassador to Japan, said Yoshihiro's death had a significant effect on the public debate over the law.

Aftermath

The verdicts ended the legal proceedings but not the consequences. Rodney Peairs told reporters he would never own a gun again; later accounts said he lost his home and his job as a supermarket butcher and was living in a trailer park.

Yoshihiro's family and his American host family worked to preserve his memory. Through the civil settlement, his parents established charitable funds in his name and created the Yoshi Foundation, an exchange program that sends American high school students to Japan.

Richard Haymaker endowed two scholarships: the Yoshihiro Hattori Memorial Scholarship, for students from Japan, and the Yoshihiro Hattori Memorial Fund for Off-Campus Study, for students wishing to study there.

The Hattori and Haymaker families also continued advocating for changes related to gun laws and public safety for many years after Yoshihiro’s death. Their efforts went beyond the immediate aftermath of the case, as they continued sharing Yoshihiro’s story to raise awareness and encourage discussion about preventing similar tragedies. In March 2018, after the Parkland shooting in Florida, Yoshihiro's parents took part in the March for Our Lives movement.

More than thirty years later, Yoshihiro Hattori's name remains tied to a tragedy that began with a simple mistake. He was a teenager who crossed the world with curiosity and hope and lost his life in a tragic misunderstanding. Through scholarships, exchange programs, and continued advocacy, his family and friends ensured that his life represented more than the circumstances of his death.

Background

On Friday, October 31, 1969, two teenage girls disappeared from the small town of Oscoda, in Iosco County, Michigan. Patricia Ann "Patty" Spencer, 16, and Pamela Sue "Pam" Hobley, 15, were not close friends; by all accounts, they both simply crossed paths that Halloween. Yet their names would become forever linked in one of Michigan's most haunting unsolved disappearances.

Halloween 1969

Patricia Spencer was born on January 10, 1953, and Pamela Hobley on May 24, 1954; both were students at Oscoda High School.1

According to reports, both girls left school early on October 31, 1969, with the last confirmed sighting placing 16-year-old Patricia Spencer and 15-year-old Pamela Hobley walking eastbound on East River Road, away from Oscoda High School, at around 2:00 p.m. Pamela had told her family that she would be home later that day, as she was planning to attend her school’s homecoming football game followed by a Halloween party. She never made it to either.

A missing persons investigation was launched after neither girl could be located. In the early stages of the investigation, authorities believed the two had run away; one early theory held that they had set off for Flint; however, both families disputed this theory, as Hobley and Spencer reportedly had good relationships with their families, and neither had left with items suggesting they planned to travel.

Physical descriptions of both girls, as well as the clothes they were wearing that day, were released. Pamela Hobley was 5'6" to 5'8", with long brown hair and brown eyes, and was wearing a white fur coat with brown trim, a plaid skirt, knee socks, and chunky shoes. Patricia Spencer was 5'3" to 5'5", with long blond hair and blue eyes, and wore a brown or tweed plaid skirt, a brown sweater, a plaid jacket, and brown heeled shoes.

Investigators also recorded distinguishing details that would matter if remains were ever found: Spencer, who normally wore glasses (though not that day), had a scar on one leg from a childhood dog attack, and was reportedly wearing a peace-sign necklace; Hobley had a scar on the bridge of her nose and a scar or birthmark at the left corner of her mouth.

Neither girl carried identification, a purse, or a change of clothing, which further implied that they had not disappeared voluntarily. Police cited several undisclosed sources that indicated Hobbley and Spencer were given a ride to downtown Oscoda, where they believe the two may have continued hitchhiking and were eventually abducted.

According to later accounts, a motorist allegedly dropped the girls at a gas station near the corner of River Road and US-23, at the edge of the business district, where they were last seen.

Decades-Long Investigation

With little to go on in the way of clues or suspects, the disappearances went cold. In 1985, police received a tip that the girls had been murdered by two area men and buried near a barn that had been used for teenage parties. A later search of the site using cadaver dogs turned up nothing.

In 2010, a new detective was assigned and began re-interviewing surviving witnesses. By 2013, investigators said publicly that they had a person of interest but needed more information to move forward.

In recent years, the case has been taken up by a dedicated cold-case team pairing Michigan State Police West Branch Post detectives with the Oscoda Township Police Department. The investigators continue to appeal to the public for tips. The Oscoda Township Police Department renewed those public appeals in late 2023.2

The Hobley–Spencer file also drew on an unusual resource: Western Michigan University's Cold Case Program, in which students partner directly with Michigan State Police to reopen long-dormant cases. Directed by Dr. Ashlyn Kuersten, the program logs thousands of hours each semester digitizing and organizing old files by turning boxes of decades-old paper into searchable records detectives can pull up in the field.3

Both girls are entered in the national databases: Patricia Spencer as NamUs MP #11479 and Pamela Hobley as NamUs MP #11478. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children has produced age-progression images of Patricia Spencer at about age 60 and Pamela Hobley at about age 57. Both are also profiled by The Doe Network, and neither girl has fingerprints on file, which is why DNA and dental records are central to any future identification.

Person of Interest

In April 2026, Michigan State Police announced that forensic-grade genome sequencing work done with the MSP Forensic Science Division and Othram Labs, along with students from Western Michigan University's Cold Case Program reorganizing and digitizing the file, had identified the man responsible for the 1983 kidnapping, sexual assault, and murder of 16-year-old Sheri Jo Elliott in Flint.

He was Roni Collins, 75, of Grand Blanc. Collins never faced charges. He had taken his own life in January 2026, before investigators could obtain a DNA sample; detectives later matched DNA collected during his autopsy to the evidence in the Elliott case.

Elliott, 16, had vanished on November 16, 1983, while walking to her school bus stop in Flint; her body was found four days later in a Saginaw County ditch. The case had sat cold for more than four decades until the WMU program reopened it in 2023 and investigators recovered testable DNA.4

The reason Collins matters to Oscoda is what police said next: Michigan State Police confirmed that Collins had been questioned years earlier as a person of interest in the 1969 disappearance of Pam Hobley and Patricia Spencer.

For decades, the investigation's most tantalizing lead was an unknown vehicle. Just before they disappeared, witnesses reported seeing the girls talking to someone in a van. Collins would have been about 19 in 1969. A bass guitarist who went by the nickname "Hendrix," he played teen dances and venues around Hale and Oscoda, and decades later with the band The GoodFoot.

At the time of the disappearance, he was questioned by police in Flint but said he knew nothing about the girls.5 Collins had ties to the area and, as Hobley's sister Mary Buehrle recalled, "used to hang out down by the beach" and drove a van, echoing the long-standing witness account.

It is important to remember that Collins was a person of interest and never a charged suspect in the Oscoda case, and he is now dead. The disappearance of Patricia Spencer and Pamela Hobley remains officially unsolved and open.

Current Status of the Case

No trace of Pamela Hobley or Patricia Spencer has ever been found. Authorities obtained DNA profiles for both girls and dental charting for Hobley. (Spencer's dental records could not be located). The Hobley family has posted a $1,000 reward, and Mary Buehrle has kept her sister's name alive through events such as Michigan's "Missing in Michigan" program.

Investigators continue to ask anyone with information, no matter how small or old, to come forward. Tips can be directed to the Michigan State Police West Branch Post or the Oscoda Township Police Department.

Halloween Nightmares

Every year, when the leaves turn and the porch lights flicker on, we trade costumes for case files. True stories that sound like something whispered around a campfire, except every one of them happened. Graves that didn’t stay closed. Monsters that frightened whole towns into doing the unthinkable. And the holiday itself, turned into something no one would ever celebrate the same way again.

Some of these cases gave rise to the legends you grew up with. Others are the reason those legends never quite went away. All month, we’ll separate the folklore from the record, and you may find the record is the more frightening of the two.

On August 31, 1998, 14-year-old Natasha Ryan disappeared in Rockhampton, Queensland. What followed was years of searching, a series of investigations, and eventually a memorial service held for the teenage girl who was believed to have been lost forever. Nearly five years later, on April 10, 2003, the entire case was turned upside down when police discovered Natasha, alive, hiding in the closet in a home in North Rockhampton. 1

Eventually, the truth would come to light in one of the most unusual missing persons cases in Queensland’s history.

Background

The story of the Bluebelle and Terry Jo Duperrault began with a happy family finally taking the trip they'd dreamed of for so long. Within only a few days, though, their story became one of unfathomable loss.

Against all odds, Terry Jo survived an experience and conditions that she never should have endured. After being rescued, she revealed the truth of what had really happened to her family onboard that vessel.

Despite the tragedy she endured, Terry Jo went on to live a meaningful life and impact real change, becoming an inspirational figure for all who have heard her story.

The Duperrault family

Arthur and Jean Duperrault were Green Bay, Wisconsin, residents and the proud parents of Brian, Terry Jo, and René. Arthur was a contact lens optometrist. As a former World War II veteran, he had also spent time at sea and dreamed of taking his family on an ocean expedition. The Duperrault family began putting money aside to make that dream a reality.1

As far as is known, the Duperraults lived a comfortable, quiet, and happy life. Over the course of a few years, they had managed to save up enough money to afford the vacation of a lifetime – Arthur's dream of sailing his family from Florida to the Bahamas was about to become a reality.

By the summer of 1961, they had everything prepared. They were going to escape the harsh Wisconsin weather and embark on their adventure, sailing to the Bahamas and docking at multiple tropical destinations. The family even made preparations to extend their voyage if everyone was enjoying themselves.

This long-awaited journey should have been a treasured family memory, but they could never have predicted how their dream would quickly become a living nightmare.

Setting sail

It was November of 1961, and the Duperraults were ready to set sail. Arthur had chartered a 60-foot sailboat, Bluebelle, to carry his family from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to the Bahamas. The boat came with a captain: Julian Harvey, a notable local yachtsman.

Though 44-year-old Harvey was known for his sea legs, he was also known for his shaky relationships. Still, his sixth wife, Mary, was also brought onboard to serve as the cook for the Duperrault family cruise.

Around midday on November 8th, 1961, Arthur and Jean boarded the Bluebelle alongside 14-year-old Brian, 11-year-old Terry Jo, and 7-year-old René. The ship left port in the early afternoon, and the Duperraults' long-awaited adventure had begun. They spent their first four days at sea making stops along the northwestern region of the Bahamas, snorkeling and doing all the usual touristy things.

On November 12th, they made their final port of call before beginning their journey back to Florida. Here, at Sandy Point, Arthur told Roderick Finder, the British district commissioner, that this had been a "Once-in-a-lifetime vacation," and expressed his desire to return soon with his family.2 Unbeknownst to Arthur, trouble lay ahead once the Bluebelle left port that evening.

A Shocking Discovery

It was midday on November 13th. A crew member of an oil tanker spotted a man in a dinghy waving his hands erratically. The man was yelling for help, crying out that he had a deceased child onboard the small vessel.

The Gulf Lion crew pulled the man onboard, and when they did, they saw the lifeless body of a young redheaded girl wearing a life jacket. The man told the oil tanker crew that he was Julian Harvey, Captain of the Bluebelle, and he identified the young girl in the dinghy as René Duperrault.3

According to Harvey, a strong squall had hit the Bluebelle at around 11 p.m. the previous night. The squall snapped the vessel's main mast and caused it to keel over between the Abaco Islands and Great Stirrup Cay.

Harvey reported that his wife and Arthur Duperrault were injured, and that the falling mast pierced the ship's hull. The rigging then pulled down the mizzen mast, and Harvey became separated from the other passengers.

He claimed he had attempted to retrieve a wire cutter from the cabin to cut his way through the deck space, but a fire broke out onboard that prevented him from doing so. Unable to rescue the other passengers, Harvey had been forced to abandon the ship alone in the dinghy.

He said that he had seen the body of René floating by, and he had pulled her into the dinghy and attempted resuscitation, but to no avail. Harvey claimed he had kept René’s body in the dinghy with him out of respect.

Local authorities took Harvey to Nassau for questioning. It was revealed that René had died of drowning, which seemed consistent with his account of the events. However, investigators were suspicious of Harvey due to his shockingly calm demeanor and, more importantly, the fact that his dinghy was full of survival supplies.

Despite their suspicion, there was no evidence to disprove his claims, and he was released from custody and allowed to return to Miami on November 15th, where he’d be questioned again by the U.S. Coast Guard. Harvey had no idea that another discovery would soon be made that would change the narrative completely.

The Sea Orphan

On November 16th, second officer Nicolaos Spachidakis of the Greek vessel Captain Theo spotted something on the water approximately one mile from the freighter. He summoned the ship’s Captain, and together they realized the object on the horizon was not a small fishing boat, but rather a small white raft.

Onboard the raft was a young girl in a white blouse and pink corduroy slacks. She was waving weakly toward the ship, leaning back on her cork float. The Captain ordered the engines to be shut off and a life raft lowered.

As crew members closed in for the rescue, they spotted sharks circling near the float and urged the child not to jump into the water. They carefully lifted her aboard the raft and hoisted her up to the ship, placing her in a spare cabin onboard.4

The child was exhausted, incoherent, and barely able to speak at all. The crew brought her water and orange juice, and they carefully cleaned her frail body to help stop further dehydration. The girl identified herself as 11-year-old Terry Jo Duperrault, and she told the crew that she had been drifting aimlessly on the cork float for days after her ship had sunk.

That was nearly all the information Terry Jo was able to provide before her body gave in to the exhaustion and she entered a semi-comatose state. The Captain called the Coast Guard to report what had happened and alert them to Terry Jo's need for medical intervention.

A rescue helicopter was sent to retrieve her, and they airlifted her to a hospital in Miami. Terry Jo arrived in critical condition, and she was suffering from a combination of severe sunburn, dehydration, and exposure to the elements. For more than two days, she was unable to speak to police or the Coast Guard about what had happened.

It took four days after her initial rescue for Terry Jo to find her voice again, but when she did, she told the harrowing story of what really happened to the Bluebelle and her family.

Mutiny and Massacre

Terry Jo told investigators that on the evening of November 12th, the Bluebelle had begun its voyage back to Florida. After dinner, Terry Jo had gone down to the lower cabin at around 9 p.m. to sleep. Her parents, siblings, Captain Harvey, and his wife remained aboveboard on the deck.

Some time later, Terry Jo was awoken by the screams of her brother Brian, calling out for their father. She made her way above deck, and there she saw the dead bodies of Brian and her mother, lying in the main cabin near the galley.

Further on the deck, she spotted Harvey carrying a bucket. He hit her and shoved her below deck, screaming at her to get back down. In shock and terrified, Terry Jo returned to her cabin and shortly thereafter saw a mixture of oil and water beginning to flood the floor.5

Harvey came down to her cabin, this time carrying a rifle rather than a bucket. Terry Jo froze, and although she made eye contact with Harvey, he said nothing and returned above deck. The cabin, meanwhile, was continuing to flood with oil and water. It quickly became too flooded for Terry Jo to stay there, forcing her to return above deck and face whatever horror awaited.

She saw Harvey standing on the deck, and the dinghy was deployed in the water below. He asked her if the dinghy was loose, and she told him she did not know. Harvey ordered Terry Jo to hold the rope attached to the dinghy while he went to get something. The rope slipped through her fingers, and when Harvey came back, he dove overboard and swam to the dinghy, leaving Terry Jo standing alone on the rapidly sinking sailboat.

Somehow, despite the nightmare unfolding around her, Terry Jo remembered a cork float lashed to the deck. As the deck began sinking below the water, she managed to untie the float and toss it overboard. She swam toward it and managed to climb on top, drifting away from the wreckage of the ship.

She would be stuck on the cork raft, a vessel so small she could only sit upright on it, for three and a half days with no food, water, or refuge from the harsh sun and wind. In her recounting of the events, Terry Jo insisted that the mast of the Bluebelle had never broken, there was never a fire onboard, and the ocean was calm that night – all elements that directly contrasted Harvey’s story.

She was told that Harvey had been found alive, and that René’s body was found with him. As though she hadn’t already endured enough trauma, investigators had to tell young Terry Jo that the bodies of her parents and her brother had been lost at sea.

Aftermath

On the morning of November 16th, Harvey was being questioned by the Coast Guard. During the interrogation, he was informed that Terry Jo had been rescued that very day, and that she was alive. He responded with an exclamation and a calm, “Isn’t that wonderful?” Lieutenant Ernest Murdoch told Harvey that an official investigation was being launched into the sinking of the Bluebelle and the loss of her passengers. Harvey asked to be excused to go speak with his wife’s family, and his request was granted.

Harvey then drove to the Sandman Motel, where he paid cash for his room under the name of John Monroe. In the room, he wrote a two-page suicide note, then took his own life by using a razor blade to cut his thigh, ankles, and jugular vein.

A maid discovered his body lying in the motel room bathroom around two hours later. The note left behind was addressed to a friend from his previous days serving in the military, and although the note did not explain why Harvey had done what he’d done, it ended with, “I got too tired and nervous. I couldn’t stand it any longer.” In the note, Harvey also requested his friend look after his 14-year-old son, Lance, and asked the recipient to make sure he was buried at sea.

A full investigation into Harvey’s background and history was launched after his death. It was revealed that Harvey had been having long-term and ongoing financial problems, stemming largely from his inability to hold a steady job following his military service in both World War II and the Korean War.

He had married Mary Dene in July of 1961, and two months later, he had taken out a double indemnity life insurance policy on her. In October of 1961, one month before the Duperrault family’s voyage, the owner of the Bluebelle had hired Harvey to take tourists on cruises in the vessel in exchange for $300 per month and free lodging onboard.

Investigators believed Harvey was planning to murder Mary at sea and use the tourists onboard as witnesses to corroborate his claims that it had been an accident, allowing him to cash in the life insurance policy he’d taken on her. The Duperraults just so happened to be Harvey’s first chartered clients.

The inquiry concluded that Harvey intended to carry out that plan, and likely had no intention of harming the Duperrault family. However, they speculated that Arthur may have caught Harvey either in the act of murdering Mary or in the process of disposing of her body. If that were the case, Harvey would need to get rid of the witnesses, who were now witnesses to murder and not witnesses for his insurance payout.

Investigators felt strongly that Harvey likely grabbed René’s body from the water not out of remorse, but to help make his sob story seem more credible. The insurance-fraud-gone-wrong theory seemed especially more likely when investigators discovered that Harvey had survived a car accident in 1949 that had claimed the lives of his second wife and her mother. Harvey drove the car off a bridge at a high speed, and while he swam to safety, he left his wife, Joan, and her mother to drown.

Coupling that with his previous losses of two other vessels under strange circumstances, and authorities were confident that had Harvey not taken his own life, they would have been able to successfully convict him for the murders of all the passengers onboard the Bluebelle and the attempted murder of Terry Jo.

A Trail of “Accidents”

Julian Harvey had walked away from the water before. In April 1949, he was driving his wife and her mother through the Florida Panhandle when, as the story was later told, “they crossed an old wooden bridge over a bayou, the car went into a skid, crashed through the railing, and plunged into the murky waters.”6

Six years later, Harvey’s 68-foot yawl, Torbatross, struck a submerged wreck in Chesapeake Bay and sank. One of his passengers remembered it this way: “I remember we sailed around the wreck twice. Harvey said he was trying to read the markings on the buoy.”

A federal court awarded Harvey $14,258 for the loss. Then his next boat, the Valiant, went down too, and according to TIME, Harvey “confided to friends in Miami that he had scuttled Valiant for the insurance.”

Even the man at the Bluebelle‘s helm was not what he seemed. In a lawsuit that followed the massacre, the ketch’s owner alleged that Harvey “was not a licensed captain” and that hiring him “resulted in the owner having to pay a fine.”7

The Duperraults had trusted their lives to a charming, decorated war hero. The record behind him told a different story.

Why Did He Let Her Live?

It was the question that haunted everyone who followed the case. Erle Stanley Gardner, the creator of Perry Mason, called it “the mystery of the decade” in a column published in March 1962: “How did little Terry Jo Duperrault live through a murderous rampage? Why hadn’t Julian Harvey shot her, bludgeoned her, or pushed her into the water without a life preserver?”

Harvey had stood over her with a rifle and looked her in the eye. He said nothing. Then he left her on a sinking boat. When the Coast Guard released its findings the following spring, its answer was a cold one: Harvey had spared the girls “probably in the assumption that they would drown when the vessel sank.”

Terry Jo would spend the rest of her life with a different answer. “I thought that I was spared for a reason,” she said, “and the reason would be to help other people.”

Hope from Tragedy

After the horrific loss of her family, Terry Jo moved in with her aunt, grandmother, and cousins back in Wisconsin. She changed her name to Tere the following year, which spoke to her determination to not view herself as a victim. She did not receive any trauma counseling, and for over twenty years, she did not speak publicly about her story of incredible loss and incredible survival.

Tere went on to marry, and she had three children. As an adult, Tere found herself drawn to water. She applied with the Department of Natural Resources for a position with fisheries, then went on to work in Water Resources and Water Regulation and Zoning. In a 2010 interview, Tere said, “Julian Harvey abandoned me thinking the ocean would swallow me, but instead it created a bond between me and water,” and added, “I went on to protect the water that had protected me as a little girl.”

In 2010, Tere released her memoir entitled Alone: Orphaned on the Ocean. The book was co-authored with survivalist and psychologist Richard Logan.8

In this memoir, Tere tells her story in vivid and harrowing detail, sharing the truth of what happened to her family, the days she spent adrift at sea, and her life since. Aside from her book, Tere impacted real change to maritime recommendations – her white cork float was difficult to spot at sea, and in 1962 the Coast Guard's investigation recommended that life floats and life rafts be colored international orange to help shipwreck survivors be found.

According to Tere, she believes she survived for a reason, and stated in a televised interview 49 years after that fateful night, "If one person heals from a life tragedy, my journey will have been worth it."

Closing Thoughts

Terry Jo Duperrault, now Tere Duperrault Fassbender, survived against all odds. She lost her family during what was supposed to be their vacation of a lifetime, and she found herself drifting at sea on a tiny cork float that could have very well become her final resting place.

Somehow, at only eleven years old, Tere managed to find the strength of will to stay alive. She grew not to fear water, or to hate it, but to love it and protect it with a passion. Although Julian Harvey’s actions destroyed her family, he couldn’t destroy Tere’s resilience.

From a story of such unthinkable pain came strength even more unimaginable. Today, the little girl they called the Sea Orphan stands as a testament to bravery, legacy, and not resigning oneself to being a victim, no matter what happens.

Background

On November 13, 1990, nine-year-old Fusako Sano headed home after watching a school baseball game in the city of Sanjō, in Japan's Niigata Prefecture. She never arrived.

For more than nine years, her family searched for answers, unaware that all the while Fusako was being held prisoner in a house barely two hundred meters from a police substation.

When she was finally discovered in January 2000, her rescue shocked Japan and exposed one of the country’s most disturbing kidnapping cases, leaving many to question how such a horrific situation could remain hidden for so long.

An Ordinary Childhood

Fusako Sano was born on November 28, 1980, in Mitsuke, Niigata Prefecture, Japan, to parents Yasuo and Nobue Sano. By 1990, Fusako was a fourth-grade elementary school student living in Sanjō, a city in Niigata Prefecture on Japan’s western coast. She led an ordinary childhood centered on school and friends.

All of that would change on November 13, 1990, when nine-year-old Fusako left school after watching a baseball game. What began as a normal afternoon quickly became a nightmare that would haunt her family and shock a nation. The case later became known as the “Niigata girl confinement incident.”1

Abduction of Fusako Sano

As she walked home that afternoon, Fusako was approached by Nobuyuki Satō — a 28-year-old unemployed, mentally disturbed man who lived with his elderly mother in Kashiwazaki, some fifty-five kilometers from where Fusako disappeared. Satō forced Fusako into his car and drove away.

Satō then drove the girl to his home in Kashiwazaki, and there he confined her to a room on the second floor of the house, where she would remain trapped for the next nine years. The house was in a normal residential neighborhood, and even sat two hundred meters from a kōban, the small neighborhood police substation that is a fixture of Japanese communities.

When Fusako failed to return home, her family immediately knew that something was wrong. The disappearance of the nine-year-old child led to a major search involving police and members of the local community. Authorities searched for any clues that could reveal what had happened to her.

What made the case all the more frustrating was that Satō was not a stranger to the police. In June 1989, he had been investigated for inflicting violence on another girl and was convicted that September. Yet when detectives drew up their list of possible suspects after Fusako vanished the following year, Satō’s name was noticeably absent.

The man at the center of the crime, Nobuyuki Satō, was born on July 15, 1962. At the time of the abduction, He lived with his mother in Kashiwazaki. According to later accounts from his neighbors, after the death of his father, Satō’s behavior became increasingly violent and unstable.

Investigation and Search

Despite extensive search efforts, Fusako could not be found. Months passed with no clear leads, confirmed sightings, or evidence. At one point, investigators even considered several unusual possibilities, including the possibility that she had been taken by North Korean intelligence agents.

Meanwhile, the truth was much closer than anyone imagined. Fusako had not been taken somewhere far away. She was being held inside a house just a short distance from a police station.

Nine Years In Captivity

During her captivity, Fusako experienced years of isolation and psychological control. For Fusako, the world outside the room slowly disappeared. A nine-year-old child who had once attended school, played with friends, and lived a normal childhood was suddenly forced into a life of isolation. She was separated from her family, removed from society, and placed completely under the control of the man who had taken her.

During the early months of her captivity, Satō reportedly kept Fusako restrained and controlled her movements. She later told investigators that she was initially terrified, but over time she became psychologically exhausted and accepted her situation because of the fear created by her captor. The door was reportedly not always locked, yet she never left. "I was too scared to escape," she told police, "and eventually lost the energy to escape."2

Satō controlled almost every part of Fusako’s daily life. The room where she was kept had no bathroom. Because of this, Fusako could only bathe occasionally, and only when Satō allowed it. The lack of basic facilities made her years of captivity even more difficult and isolating.

Satō also cut Fusako’s hair and gave her his own men's clothing to wear. He provided her with meals several times a day, including instant food and meals prepared by his mother, who lived downstairs in the house.

For most of those years, her only contact with the outside world was a radio; only in the final year was she allowed to watch television. Satō was reportedly obsessed with horse racing and forced Fusako to videotape races for him. When she failed to do so, he punished her with a stun gun and threatened her with a knife and beatings.

Satō lived in the house with his mother, who stayed on the lower floor. She claimed that she did not know Fusako was being held upstairs. However, police later believed that she must have had some awareness of Fusako’s presence.

Satō’s mother reportedly avoided going upstairs because her son had become violent and aggressive whenever she attempted to enter his room. Despite living in the same house, the full extent of what she knew became one of the most debated questions following Fusako’s rescue.

As the years passed, Fusako grew from a child into a teenager inside that room. The little girl who disappeared in 1990 became a 19-year-old young woman before she was finally freed.

Missed Opportunities

One of the major controversies in the case involved Satō’s mother. Before Fusako was discovered, Satō’s mother had contacted the Kashiwazaki Public Health Center on multiple occasions because she was worried about her son’s increasingly violent and unstable behavior.

Her first known contact with authorities occurred in January 1996, when she requested assistance regarding Satō’s condition. She contacted the health center again on January 12, 2000, and once more on January 19, 2000, only days before Fusako was finally found.

Police later believed Satō’s mother may have known that something unusual was happening inside the house. Investigators pointed to details such as her preparing meals for the household and reportedly purchasing feminine hygiene products, though she maintained that she did not know Fusako was being held upstairs.

The revelation of these failures caused public anger throughout Japan and raised serious questions about whether a more diligent investigation could have saved Fusako from years of captivity.

Discovery and Rescue

On Friday, January 28, 2000, nearly a decade after Fusako Sano disappeared, the missing child who had vanished in 1990 was found alive. After Satō’s mother’s repeated requests for help regarding her son’s unstable behavior, officials from the Kashiwazaki Public Health Center finally arrived at the house.

Their visit was unrelated to Fusako’s disappearance; they were there because of concerns about Satō’s unstable behavior. When officials arrived, they removed Satō from the house for a medical evaluation.

Fusako, who had spent more than nine years hidden inside the home, accompanied them. At that time, nobody realized that the quiet young woman with Satō was a kidnapped girl who had been missing for nearly a decade. While at the hospital, Satō caused a disturbance, which resulted in police officers being called to the scene.

During this unexpected encounter, Fusako approached the officers and identified herself. She told police: “I was abducted near the school by a man who forced me into a car. For nine years, I did not take a step out of the house. Today, I went out for the first time.” Police quickly realized the young woman in front of them was Fusako Sano. The nine-year-old girl who disappeared in 1990. The girl whose family had spent years wondering what happened to her.3

When Fusako was found, she was physically weak and severely affected by years of isolation indoors. Due to the lack of exposure to sunlight for many years, she had a very light skin tone and suffered from jaundice. She was extremely thin and dehydrated. She struggled to walk due to the lack of physical activity during her captivity. She also showed signs of psychological trauma after spending almost half her life separated from the outside world.

After nine years and two months in captivity, Fusako was finally free. Her reunion with her family was an emotional and unforgettable moment. Her mother, who had spent years living with uncertainty and not knowing whether her daughter was still alive, was finally able to hold her again.

Because Fusako had disappeared at nine years old, her mother initially struggled to recognize her when they reunited. The child she remembered had now grown into a 19-year-old young woman.

Public Fallout

Following Fusako’s rescue, Nobuyuki Satō was immediately taken into custody, and the legal process surrounding one of Japan’s most shocking kidnapping cases began. On January 28, 2000, the same day Fusako was discovered, Satō was hospitalized because authorities considered him mentally unstable.

At that time, he was considered a suspect while investigators began examining the full extent of his crimes. On February 11, 2000,4 he was formally arrested. At the time of his arrest, Satō was 37.

The case quickly attracted national attention. The public was shocked not only by the fact that Fusako had survived nearly a decade in captivity, but also by the failures that allowed Satō to hide her for so long. The case also created a major public backlash against the authorities responsible for protecting Fusako and investigating her disappearance.

It emerged that during the time Fusako was found, the chief of the Niigata Prefectural Police, Koji Kobayashi, was not at his post but at a hot-spring resort, drinking and playing mah-jong with a senior regional police official. Worse still, police statements initially implied that officers had made the discovery, when in fact it was health workers who had stumbled upon her. Facing intense public criticism, Koji Kobayashi resigned on February 26, 2000, and Yoshiaki Nakada resigned on February 29.5

Trial and Conviction of Nobuyuki Satō

The trial of Nobuyuki Satō began on May 23, 2000, at the Niigata District Court. Prosecutors were careful in their handling of the case because they were concerned about causing further psychological harm to Fusako.

Instead of focusing only on the kidnapping and confinement charges, they included additional offenses against Satō, including minor crimes such as shoplifting women's underwear, in an effort to increase the maximum possible punishment he could receive.

During the early stages of the trial, Satō’s mental condition became a major issue. The defense argued that Satō was not mentally responsible for his actions. However, on September 6, 2001, psychiatric evaluations concluded that he was mentally fit to stand trial. Following this decision, Satō admitted the main charges against him.

On January 22, 2002, the Niigata District Court sentenced Nobuyuki Satō to 14 years in prison, close to the then-maximum sentence of 15 years. But the legal battle was not over. On January 24, 2002, Satō’s defense team appealed the decision, moving the case to the Tokyo High Court. 6

On October 12, 2002, Tokyo High Court Judge Toshio Yamada reduced the sentence from 14 years to 11 years. The reduced sentence disappointed prosecutors, who believed the original punishment better reflected the seriousness of the crime. On July 10, 2003, after an appeal, the Supreme Court accepted the prosecution’s arguments and restored the original 14-year prison sentence.

Release and Death

Satō was eventually sent to Chiba Prison in Chiba City, where he served his sentence. He was released in April 2015 after completing his 14-year sentence. After his release, he lived a relatively quiet life away from public attention.

In 2017, Nobuyuki Satō was found dead alone inside his apartment in Chiba Prefecture at the age of 55.7

Aftermath

After her rescue, Fusako faced the difficult process of rebuilding her life. Although she was physically free. The psychological effects of spending nine years in captivity did not immediately disappear. She had missed an entire stage of childhood. She had missed school years, friendships, family moments, and many experiences that shape a person’s early life.

Returning to normal life required patience, support, and time. Despite the trauma she experienced, Fusako gradually adapted to life after captivity. Reports stated that her physical health improved after her release, and she eventually returned to living with her family. In the years following her rescue, Fusako gradually developed her own interests and routines while continuing to adjust to everyday life.

She obtained a driver's license and became interested in digital photography, particularly photographing flowers, which became one of the activities she enjoyed in her free time. Although Fusako continued to live a private life away from public attention, people in her community noticed that she enjoyed following the local J. League soccer club Albirex Niigata and occasionally attended their matches.

Unlike many missing-person cases that end in tragedy, Fusako’s story became one of survival. Her case also changed public awareness in Japan about missing children, kidnapping investigations, and the importance of carefully examining every possible lead.

She had endured years of isolation and uncertainty, yet she found the courage and resilience to rebuild her life.

Background

On March 21, 2002, John Darwin paddled a kayak out into the North Sea off Seaton Carew, a faded seaside resort on the County Durham coast. When he failed to clock in for his night shift, he was reported missing, and a large-scale search began.

After the wreckage of his kayak was found, Darwin was presumed drowned and declared dead. His wife, Anne, collected £250,000 in life insurance. Then, in December 2007, John Darwin turned up — alive and well — more than five and a half years after he supposedly perished at sea.

He claimed to have no memory of the past five-plus years. The police, however, were more than a little skeptical. They had already been taking another look at the supposed death of John Darwin and found some strange irregularities.

When the truth finally emerged, it sounded like something straight out of a movie.

Financial Trouble

Long before his name became linked to one of the UK’s most sensational fraud cases, John Darwin was born in 1950 in Prudhoe, Northumberland, England. He attended St. Francis Xavier Grammar School in Hartlepool, followed by De La Salle College in Salford, where he studied biology and chemistry. After graduation, Darwin taught science and mathematics at Derwentside School.

In 1973, he married Anne Stephenson, and the couple had two sons, Mark and Anthony. Eventually, Darwin quit teaching to work at Barclays Bank. He would later become a prison officer at HM Prison Holme House. Anne worked as a doctor’s receptionist. By all appearances, the family led a normal, conventional life.

According to friends, the Darwins supplemented their income through various side endeavors, including garden-gnome making and snail breeding. Then, in 2000, John and Anne took a financial gamble when they began a business renting bedsits. (A bedsit is like a rooming house where a single occupant has a bedroom and shares a common bath.)

They took out a loan to purchase twelve buy-to-let properties in County Durham and purchased two more in Seaton Carew. It was this last decision that pushed them over the edge financially. They purchased one flat to live in and one to rent. After the purchase, they were hit with a massive mortgage hike. The banks refused to extend further credit, and bankruptcy loomed on the horizon.

In his desperation, John began to concoct an extraordinary solution: he would fake his own death so that Anne could collect the life insurance.

Disappearing Act

On the afternoon of March 21, 2002, John Darwin was last seen paddling his kayak out to sea from Seaton Carew. When he did not show up for his night shift at Holme House prison, he was reported missing. His frantic wife, Anne, called to report that something “dreadful” must have happened to her husband.

Cleveland Police coordinated with the Coastguard, the RNLI and the RAF in a large-scale sea search that covered some 62 square miles of coastline. Divers checked the piers while crews scanned the beaches. Volunteers helped comb the shoreline, while helicopters and horseback riders also contributed to the search.

The following day, a double-ended paddle and the wreckage of Darwin’s kayak washed ashore.1 However, there was no sign of Darwin. This was strange because the North Sea had been unusually calm that day, and rescuers were baffled that an experienced kayakist could have perished in such mild conditions.

With no other explanation, Darwin was presumed drowned. His sons, both in their twenties, grieved hard, comforting their mother and appealing publicly for help finding any trace of their father.

The Man Next Door

The truth was that Anne had helped John disappear. In the days after the "accident," he hid himself before settling into one of the family’s bedsits next door to the family home. A concealed connecting door let him slip between the two properties without being seen from the street. In February 2003, he moved back in with Anne, still keeping the arrangement secret from their sons.

On March 21, 2002, a death certificate was issued stating that John Darwin had died in a tragic drowning at sea. It allowed Anne to claim John’s £250,000 life insurance policy, paid by Unat Direct Insurance Management Limited, part of the AIG group. The fraudulent claim allowed the couple to pay off their £130,000 mortgage.2

On one occasion, a tenant at Darwin’s bedsit recognized John and asked, “Aren’t you supposed to be dead?” Darwin begged the man to keep silent, and the tenant agreed. In October 2004, Darwin obtained a false British passport in the name of “John Jones,” using the birth certificate of an infant who died in 1950. However, he used his own home address.

In Hiding

While in hiding, John traveled under different aliases and disguised his appearance by growing out his beard. In May 2005, an angler reported meeting a "John Williams" at a lake near Penzance. That November, Darwin flew from Newcastle to Gibraltar and on to El Puerto de Santa María in Spain to inspect a £45,000, forty-two-foot catamaran, which he ultimately decided not to buy.

By 2006 the Darwins were planning to vanish for good. They settled on Panama and flew out in July 2006. There, in a property agent's office, they made a mistake that would eventually come back to haunt them: they posed for a photograph, which was later posted on the internet.

In March 2007, John and Anne formed a company, Jaguar Properties, in order to buy an apartment, and in May 2007, they purchased a tropical estate in the village of Escobal, in Colón province near the Panama Canal.

Their scheme was going according to plan until Panama changed its visa rules. In order to secure their "investor's visa," John and Anne would need to have their identities verified by the UK police. Knowing his false passport wouldn't pass a background check, John came up with a new plan: He would walk into a police station and claim he couldn’t remember anything from the past five years.3

The Plan Unravels

On December 1, 2007, Darwin walked into the West End Central Police Station in London and told the officers he believed he was a missing person. He claimed no memory of the past five years, even when asked about notable events such as the September 11th attacks. He was then sent to a hospital for observation. Anne, for her part, feigned surprise and joy at the “discovery” that her husband was alive.

The following day, Darwin’s sons, Mark and Anthony, were informed of their father’s reappearance. Both of them were overjoyed to find him alive and well after five years of believing he was dead. They were reunited briefly for the first time since 2002. Mark and Anthony were still unaware of their parents’ deception.

Investigators, though, were leery of Darwin’s story. Anne, for all her performance as a heartbroken widow, had taken foreign holidays, sold the family home, and moved money abroad. A financial investigation had begun months earlier after one of Anne's colleagues overheard a suspicious phone call.4 Officials began to suspect insurance fraud when the hospital reported that John had none of the symptoms of a true amnesia victim.

On December 5th, the incriminating photo of John and Anne with the Panamanian real estate agent surfaced when a bank worker found it online. The Daily Mirror then published the photo. John Darwin was arrested at his son Anthony’s home in Basingstoke, Hampshire, on suspicion of fraud related to his disappearance and life insurance payment. It was the first time the Darwin sons became aware of their parents’ deceptive plan.

A search of the family home revealed several incriminating documents, including insurance records and John’s false passport. After learning the full extent of their parents’ deception, Mark and Anthony Darwin issued a joint statement saying they felt they had been the victims of a scam and wanted nothing more to do with their parents.

Legal Consequences

On December 9, 2007, police arrested Anne Darwin at Manchester Airport on suspicion of fraud. She was then released on bail and was charged with six counts of deception and nine counts of using criminal property, encompassing the insurance fraud and the forged document scheme. Under questioning, Anne admitted she knew John was never missing and that he had lived in a hidden room for years.

John Darwin faced seven counts of obtaining money by deception, one count of making false statements to procure a passport (involving forgery), and nine counts of using criminal property.

On March 15, 2008, at the Leeds Crown Court, John admitted to seven counts of obtaining cash by deception and a passport offense. He denied nine counts of using criminal property, which were left to lie on file.5 (Meaning that no admission to the charge is made by the defendant and no verdict is recorded against them)

Anne Darwin was tried at Teesside Crown Court, where the jury heard how she had lied to her own sons for years. She denied all of the charges brought against her. On July 23, 2008, John and Anne Darwin were both convicted of fraud. John was sentenced to six years and three months in prison. Anne was sentenced to six years and six months.6 Both of them appealed their sentences, and were denied by the Court of Appeal on March 27, 2009.

The Crown Prosecution Service said that all profits the Darwins had accumulated must be confiscated and/or repaid. John eventually served only two years and six months of his sentence. He was released on probation in January 2011. Anne Darwin was also released on probation in March 2011.

Aftermath

On February 14, 2012, the Crown Prosecution Service announced it had recovered the full £501,641.39 Anne received in insurance and pension payouts, partly through the sale of the couple's two Panama properties. By April 2014, John Darwin had personally repaid just £121 of the £679,073 he had been ordered to pay, arguing that the assets were all in Anne's name. By July 2015, the pair had no assets left, having repaid £541,762.39 between them.

The couple divorced in 2012. Anne later wrote a memoir, Out of My Depth, in which she said her husband had coerced her into the scheme — an account the jury had already rejected — and she slowly rebuilt her relationship with her sons; she later worked for the RSPCA. John Darwin moved to the Philippines and remarried.

The Darwin’s story has been portrayed on screen in the 2010 BBC Four film Canoe Man, starring Bernard Hill and Saskia Reeves, and in ITV's 2022 drama The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe, with Eddie Marsan and Monica Dolan.

Background

On the afternoon of May 16, 1980, 36-year-old Mary Stauffer was wrapping up some final errands before she, her husband, and their two young children would be leaving their suburban Minnesota home for a four-year missionary trip to the Philippines. One of those errands was getting a haircut for her 8-year-old daughter, Beth.

There was no way of knowing that day would be the beginning of a terrifying 53-day ordeal that most people can barely imagine. After Mary and her daughter were abducted from a parking lot in broad daylight by an obsessed stalker, Mary’s family, local police, and the FBI spent the next seven weeks trying to locate them. Meanwhile, Mary focused on trying to keep her daughter alive while praying for a way out.

Family Life and Teaching

Long before her name became connected to one of Minnesota's most disturbing kidnapping cases, Mary Stauffer was living an ordinary life centered around her family, teaching, and her Christian faith. Mary grew up in West Duluth, Minnesota, and moved with her family to Hermantown at age ten. After high school, she attended Bethel College in St. Paul, graduating in 1965.

Soon after graduation, Mary married Irv Stauffer, a fellow Bethel graduate training to be a pastor. The Stauffers were involved in missionary work, and by the spring of 1980, Mary, Irv, and their two young children, Steve and Beth, were preparing for a four-year Baptist missionary trip to the Philippines.1

Prior to Irv and Mary Stauffer’s first missionary trip in 1967, Mary taught ninth-grade algebra for two years at Alexander Ramsey High School in Roseville, Minnesota. Among the students who passed through her classroom was a Taiwanese-American teenager named Ming Sen Shiue.

A Growing Obsession

Ming Sen Shiue was born in Taiwan on October 15, 1950, and moved to Minnesota with his mother and siblings at age eight. His father had been a University of Minnesota professor, and he died when Shiue was still young. As a teenager, Shiue had serious behavioral problems.

He was violent toward his younger brothers and sisters, and at fourteen he was ordered into psychotherapy after setting fire to several apartments. His own mother later described him as a boy who never seemed to feel anything at all.

However, none of these issues manifested themselves when Shiue was a student in Mary Stauffer’s ninth-grade algebra class at Alexander Ramsey High School. Shiue performed well academically and played several sports, including football and wrestling. ABC News later reported that his classmates had even voted him "Most Likely to Succeed."

According to people who knew him back then, Shiue developed a serious crush on his young algebra teacher and started writing stories for himself, which contained sexual fantasies at first about actresses and movie characters, and eventually about Mary specifically. Some of what he imagined was consensual, but a lot of it wasn't.

Over time, Shiue became increasingly isolated. According to psychologist Paul Reitman, who later evaluated him, Shiue struggled to form meaningful relationships and became deeply troubled by feelings of inadequacy. Shiue would channel these feelings of bitterness and resentment toward Mary.2

1975 Incident and Stalking

In 1975, Mary and Irv Stauffer traveled to the Philippines, embarking on their second mission trip. Meanwhile, back in Minnesota, Ming Shiue’s continuing fixation on Mary led him to act out in a frightening manner.

On July 4th, 1975, Shiue entered a house in Duluth, Minnesota, where he believed Mary was living. He was mistaken, though, as the house instead belonged to her husband Irv’s parents, who were also named Stauffer. However, rather than leave when he learned of his mistake, Shiue confronted Irv’s parents with a firearm and tied them up. He warned them that he would come back and kill them if they reported the incident to the police.

Shiue — unaware that she had left the country — continued to try to locate Mary Stauffer. When the Stauffer family finally returned to Minnesota in 1979 and moved into missionary housing at Arden Hills, it didn't take Shiue long to find them. He started watching from the woods outside their apartment building and even attempted to enter the Stauffer home three different times.

He tried to break into the house through the patio doors using a blowtorch. On another occasion, he entered a storage area beneath their bedroom and cut holes through the floor, leaving behind sawdust which Irv later swept up, unaware of why it was there. Shiue even learned where the family kept their spare apartment key.

Taken in Broad Daylight

Meanwhile, the Stauffers went about their lives, unaware of the impending danger. In the spring of 1980, the family was preparing for another missionary trip to the Philippines.

On Friday, May 16, Mary was running some errands in preparation for the upcoming trip. That morning, she had taken her six-year-old son, Steve, for a haircut, and later that afternoon, she drove her eight-year-old daughter, Beth, to her haircut appointment at Carmen's Beauty Salon on Cleveland Avenue in Roseville.

According to employees, Mary and Beth left the salon around 4:30 p.m. As they returned to the family's 1973 Ford, a man in his early thirties wearing thick glasses appeared with a gun, pressed it to Beth's side, and said he needed a ride. Mary, ready to do anything to protect her daughter, offered him the car keys.

However, the stranger — who would later be identified as Ming Sen Shiue — had other plans. Shiue forced them both into the car and ordered Mary to drive north. When a squad car pulled up behind them at an intersection, he warned that he would shoot Beth if the patrol car followed them. The patrol car turned the opposite way, and the moment passed.

Mary, who was strong in her faith, tried appealing to Shiue by telling him that God could help him if he was in trouble. He told her to be quiet and keep driving. Eventually, he directed her to a remote, wooded stretch of Anoka County, away from the busy roads and people who might have seen what was happening.

When the car finally stopped, Shiue used the rope and medical tape he'd brought with him to tie and gag Mary and Beth. He then forced them face-down into the trunk of Mary's car. Being forced into the trunk of a car was a terrifying moment for Beth. Mary had to remain focused on protecting her daughter while dealing with the immediate danger around them. The car then began moving again.

At one point, Mary managed to loosen Beth's restraints. Shiue discovered what had happened and became angry, tightening their restraints again. Later, the two managed to loosen themselves once more.

Shiue stopped again when he heard movement from the trunk. According to the court record, he removed a metal plate securing the spare tire and dropped the tire onto the two captives. It was another attempt to keep them from moving around or making enough noise to attract attention.

Abduction and Murder of Jason Wilkman

As the car was parked in a remote area near Roseville, two young boys approached the vehicle to investigate. As one of the children, six-year-old Jason Wilkman, went around to the back of the car, Shiue grabbed the boy and forced him into the trunk. The other child fled as the car peeled away.

As the car drove away, Mary and Beth tried to comfort the terrified child. He told Mary and Beth his name and age, but little else, as he was crying and in a state of heavy panic. Mary later remembered how innocent he seemed and how helpless she was to protect him while she and her daughter were also being held captive.

Shiue drove for nearly an hour before the road turned rough as they could hear gravel and branches scraping against the car. He eventually stopped in the isolated Carlos Avery Wildlife Management Area in Anoka County, opened the trunk, and pulled Jason out. Beth caught a glimpse of a long, bent metal bar in his hands before the trunk shut again. Some time later, Shiue returned alone.

After more driving, Shiue abandoned the Stauffers' car and moved Mary and Beth into his own windowless van. They then stopped briefly at his electronics shop, Sound Equipment Services on University Avenue, and after dark he brought them to his family's house at 1960 North Hamline Avenue in Roseville.

53 Days Captive

Once inside the house, Shiue led Mary and Beth to a closet he had already prepared, roughly four feet long and twenty-one inches wide, with blankets, pillows, and a few basic items. The closet became the center of their world for the next seven weeks. 3

Mary and Beth were kept there for most of their captivity, with their arms tied at the elbows and the closet door kept shut. Shiue had also removed the doorknob, making it much harder for them to open the door from inside.

Background

On December 4, 1972, 7-year-old Steven Stayner vanished while walking home from school in Merced, California. For more than seven years, his family searched for answers, never knowing what happened. Then, in March 1980, they were unexpectedly reunited after Steven and another boy managed to escape from their captor.1

The details of Steven’s ordeal were shocking and heartbreaking. He had been abducted and held prisoner for years by a vile, twisted predator with a long history of abusing children. Though Steven had defied the odds and escaped, the years of abuse and trauma had taken a toll and would impact the rest of his life.

Abduction of Steven Stayner

Steven Gregory Stayner was born on April 18, 1965, in Merced, California, the third of five children of Delbert and Kay Stayner. He grew up in a close-knit family with three sisters and an older brother, Cary, in a small agricultural community in California's Central Valley. By every account, he was an energetic, friendly, and trusting boy.[1]

On December 4, 1972, Steven left school and started his walk home. He never arrived. During his walk, a young man approached Steven, claiming to be a local church representative passing out religious tracts. The man said he was seeking donations and asked if Steven’s mother might be able to contribute.

The trusting 7-year-old said she might, and the man then coaxed him into a waiting vehicle. Inside was Kenneth Parnell. The men drove Steven far from Merced to a cabin near Catheys Valley, California, where Parnell began building a false world around him. He told Steven his parents could no longer afford him and had signed over legal custody. To a terrified child cut off from everyone he knew, the lies took hold. Parnell gave the boy a new name: Dennis Gregory Parnell. [1]

The abuse began almost immediately and escalated over the days that followed. Parnell sexually assaulted Steven soon after taking him and, within about two weeks, was raping him repeatedly, all the while repeating the lie that his family had abandoned him and there was nowhere else to go.

When hours passed with no sign of Steven, the Stayners reported him missing, and an urgent search began. Days became weeks and weeks became months with no answers. What the family could not have known was that Steven had been taken by a sexual predator who had planned the crime carefully.

A Dangerous Predator

Kenneth Eugene Parnell was born on September 26, 1931, in Amarillo, Texas, into instability. His father was an alcoholic who abandoned the family when Parnell was six. Parnell's biographer Mike Echols later wrote that the boy was so distraught by the abandonment that he pulled four of his own teeth out with pliers. 2

After his father left, Parnell, his mother, and his half-siblings moved to Bakersfield, California, where she ran a boarding house. At 13, Parnell was allegedly sexually abused by one of the boarders (though he would deny this in a later interview). As a youth, Parnell was arrested several times for crimes such as arson and car theft.[2]

In March 1951, at age 19, Parnell was convicted of sexually abusing an eight-year-old boy and impersonating a police officer. A court-appointed psychiatrist labeled him a "sexual psychopath," and he was sentenced to three to four years in San Quentin State Prison. Only days before the trial, his 15-year-old wife had given birth to a daughter; after the conviction, she left him, and a court order barred him from contact with the child.3

Parnell served his time, but the offenses did not stop. Over the following two decades, he cycled through various arrests and institutions, including an armed robbery conviction in Utah.

By the early 1970s, Parnell was working around Yosemite National Park, where he met Ervin Edward Murphy, a younger, more suggestible and naive man whom Parnell was able to manipulate. Parnell told Murphy he wanted to take a boy and raise him under a religious-style arrangement. Murphy later said he never grasped Parnell's true intentions, but he nonetheless helped Parnell search for a child.4

It was Murphy who first initiated contact with Steven on December 4, 1972, gaining the boy’s trust and coaxing him into the car where Kenneth Parnell was waiting.[4]

A Childhood Stolen

Unlike many abductors, Parnell did not keep his victim hidden away. He moved Steven around Northern California, posing as his father, enrolled him in local schools under the name Dennis Parnell, and even registered his real birth date, April 18, 1965. [1] To the outside world, they looked like an ordinary father and son. But behind this facade was a kidnapped and abused child.[1]

Parnell also allowed Steven unusual freedoms for a boy his age, letting him smoke marijuana and drink while still just a child. These privileges made Steven feel older and more mature, even as they bound him more tightly to the life Parnell had built. Those distorted years would shape Steven long after his escape.[1]

One unexpected comfort in those years was a dog named Queenie, given to Steven by Parnell. The dog had come from Parnell's own mother, who had no idea a captive child was living under her son's control. In a childhood stripped of nearly everything familiar, Queenie was one of Steven's few sources of companionship.[1]

For roughly eighteen months, Parnell lived with a girlfriend, Barbara Mathias, who became part of the household in which Steven was held. By Steven's later account, Mathias took part in the abuse, and he said that at nine years old he was assaulted by both Parnell and Mathias.5

In 1975, on Parnell's instruction, Mathias tried to lure another boy from the Santa Rosa Boys' Club. The attempt failed. Mathias later claimed she never knew "Dennis" had been kidnapped. [5] Parnell also tried to use Steven to gain other children's trust. Steven later said he intentionally sabotaged these attempts because he did not want to see another child face the same trauma that he had endured.[1]

Kidnapping of Timothy White

By early 1980, Steven Stayner was fourteen and understood the truth: Kenneth Parnell had lied to him. His parents had never abandoned him. Then, on February 14, 1980, Parnell and an acquaintance of Steven's, Randall "Sean" Poorman, kidnapped five-year-old Timothy White in Ukiah, California. Parnell dyed the boy's blond hair darker to disguise him, intending to repeat what he had done to Steven years earlier.6

But Steven was no longer the frightened 7-year-old who had vanished from Merced. In White's situation, he recognized his own, and he knew exactly what lay ahead for the boy if no one stepped in.

Escape

On March 1, 1980, after Parnell went to his job as a night-shift security guard, Steven took Timothy and left. The two boys hitchhiked roughly twenty-four miles through the dark, eventually making their way to the Ukiah police station in Mendocino County. [6] Steven told officers his harrowing story as well as his real identity.[1]

His bravery had prevented another child from suffering the same abuse that he had endured. Reflecting on his escape in a 1984 Newsweek interview, he stated, “I couldn’t see Timmy suffer; it was my do-or-die chance.”7

Before he even got to see his family, he was already being interviewed by the news media. His emotional reunion with his parents was captured live on camera. Many more interviews followed as Steven’s amazing story became highly publicized national news.

Investigation

On March 2, 1980 — one day after the escape — Kenneth Parnell was arrested.[1] As detectives looked into Parnell’s past, they found a man with a long history of targeting children, including his 1951 arrest and subsequent conviction. However, despite the horrific nature of his crimes and the obvious danger he posed, the Mendocino County prosecutors elected not to prosecute Parnell for the sexual assaults that occurred within their jurisdiction.

Many of the other assaults were not charged either, as they occurred outside Mendocino County or were outside the statute of limitations. This stunning decision became part of the case's lasting controversy.[3]

Trial and Conviction of Kenneth Parnell

Kenneth Parnell was tried for the kidnappings of Steven Stayner and Timothy White but not for the sexual abuse. In 1981, Parnell was convicted at trial; the verdict in the Stayner kidnapping came down in December 1981.8

Parnell was sentenced to just seven years in prison and served five before being paroled in 1985.[4] To many, the sentence was a shocking disgrace that did not begin to make up for the damage he had done.

Ervin Murphy, the young man who had lured Steven into the car in 1972, was also convicted and sentenced to five years, with credit for twenty-three months already served.[4]

Lasting Damage

Steven Stayner had vanished as a seven-year-old and returned as a teenager. The reunion with his family proved to be as complicated as it was joyful. He had been raised for years under Parnell's influence, granted adult freedoms no child should have, and coming home meant learning to be a son again. He later recalled:

"I returned almost a grown man, and yet my parents saw me at first as their 7-year-old. After they stopped trying to teach me the fundamentals all over again, it got better. But why doesn't my dad hug me anymore? Everything has changed. Sometimes I blame myself. I don't know sometimes if I should have come home. Would I have been better off if I didn't?"[1]

Readjusting to life after his ordeal proved to be difficult. Steven refused to discuss the details of his abuse. His sister would later say that Steven did not seek counseling because his father said he “didn’t need any.” He was frequently bullied in school, and his relationship with his family became strained.

Though the world called him a hero, privately he was a young man working to understand what had happened to him. In 1985, he married Jody Edmondson, and the couple had two children, Ashley and Steven Jr.

Building a stable family mattered fiercely to a man whose own childhood had been stolen. He spoke out for missing children, and in 1989 his story reached millions through the television miniseries I Know My First Name Is Steven.[1]

On September 16, 1989, Steven Stayner was tragically killed at the age of twenty-four in Merced, California. Riding home from his job at a pizza parlor on a rainy evening, his motorcycle was struck by a car that turned in front of him; the driver sped off, and Steven, who was not wearing a helmet, died from his injuries.9

The funeral for Steven Stayner, the brave young man who had escaped captivity nearly a decade earlier, was attended by nearly five hundred people, with 14-year-old Timothy White serving as a pallbearer.

Further Crimes and Death of Kenneth Parnell

Not surprisingly, Kenneth Parnell’s inexplicably light prison sentence did not deter his predatory ways. By the early 2000s, he was living in Berkeley, California, and though wheelchair-bound and needing around-the-clock care after a stroke, diabetes, and emphysema, he was still dangerous.

In late 2002 and early 2003, he asked his caregiver, Diane Stevens, to help him obtain a young child. Stevens, who had learned of his history, went to the police. Parnell offered $500 for a 4-year-old boy ($100 for a birth certificate and $400 upon delivery). The child (who did not exist) was part of a sting operation. Police arrested Parnell in January 2003.10

In 2004, at 72-years-old, Parnell was convicted of attempting to purchase a child and related charges and sentenced to 25 years to life under California's three-strikes law. He died on January 21, 2008, at the California Medical Facility in Vacaville, at age 76.[10]

Legacy

Steven Stayner's story remains one of the most remarkable survival cases in American criminal history. Despite his own horrific trauma and abuse, he risked everything to help save another child. Timothy White grew up to become a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy and stayed close to the Stayner family. On April 1, 2010, Timothy White died of a pulmonary embolism at age 35.11

That August, a memorial statue was dedicated at Applegate Park in Merced, depicting a teenage Steven leading young Timothy White by the hand, a moment that changed both their lives.[1]

The Stayner family would be marked by darkness once again when, in 1999, a decade after Steven's death, his older brother, Cary Stayner, murdered four women in and around Yosemite National Park. Convicted and sentenced to death, Cary turned a family already defined by one of America's most harrowing survival stories into the subject of one of its most disturbing.12

Steven Stayner survived something unimaginable, but survival alone did not erase the scars of what had been done. His story is a reminder that escaping captivity is only the beginning, that the work of healing can last a lifetime, and that a single act of courage can give another person the future you were nearly denied.

Found Alive

Most of the stories we bring you end in a grave, a cold case box, or a question no one has ever been able to answer. This month, we’re turning that around.

Welcome to September at Tales From the Underworld. Our theme is Found Alive — the cases where the missing came home, where the presumed-dead turned up years later, where someone walked out of the woods, the basement, or the headlines that had already buried them. These are stories about the moment the worst assumption turns out to be wrong. They’re rarer than the alternative, and that’s exactly why they stay with you.

We open the month with one of the most extraordinary of them all: a boy who vanished on his way home from school and reappeared seven years later — not as a body, but as a witness. It’s a case that rewired how America thinks about abduction, and it sets the tone for everything we’re running in September.

Unidentified and At Large

Last month, Tales From the Underworld brought you disturbing accounts of criminals who were never identified or apprehended. The unresolved nature of these crimes makes them all the more unsettling.

Here are some of the cases that gripped our readers:

Keeping These Stories Alive

We want to be straight with you, because we value our readers among anything else.

Starting this month, we’re slightly raising the monthly subscription rate for Tales From the Underworld. We’ll be honest: we didn’t want to do this. But every story you read here is written by a real person, and we pay all of our writers for their work. Good research and honest storytelling take time, and if we want Tales From the Underworld to be here for many years to come — and we very much do — we have to make sure we have the resources to support the time it takes to properly research and tell our true crime stories.

Here’s the part that matters most to us: we don’t want to raise the rate on the people who got us here. So if you’re already a fan of what we do, you can lock in the discounted rate for as long as you stay subscribed. Claim it by September 30th and lock in our old rate.

Thank you for being part of this — for the replies, the shares, and for caring about these stories the way we do. Here’s to a month of the ones who made it back.

Sincerely,

Background

Between 1993 and 1997, at least twelve people were murdered by an unidentified killer in the forests surrounding the Russian city of Samara. The killer mainly targeted couples parked in their vehicles.

The crimes led to an intensive investigation, and though numerous suspects were interviewed and one man was even convicted of two of the killings (though his guilt remains a subject of debate), police were unable to apprehend or identify the unknown killer who came to be known as the “Forest Maniac.”

The “Triangle of Love”

During the 1990s, Samara was a large industrial city on the Volga River with many factories, apartment blocks and universities. Yet just past these urbanized districts lay woodlands, ravines and winding roads. Outside the Krasnoglinsky district, three settlements — Upravlenchesky, Gorny and Starosemeykino — sat close enough that the woods between them formed a rough triangle locals called the Treugolnik Lyubvi, the “Triangle of Love.” [2]

Once a car left the main road, it could vanish among the trees. Young couples often drove out to the forest at night, parked somewhere quiet, and had a few hours to themselves. The route became known as the “Road of Love.” For years the arrangement worked fine. Until the summer of 1993.

September 1993

On September 1, 1993, police found an abandoned Lada hatchback in the woods near Upravlenchesky. It belonged to a young man identified by Russian accounts as Kozlov. Not far away, investigators found his body and that of a woman, Perova; both had been stabbed repeatedly in the chest and neck, and had died the same night. Relatives said the two were romantically involved. [2]

1993 was a violent year in Russia. The Soviet Union was gone, and gangs were carving up cities, and a double stabbing in the woods looked to detectives like exactly the kind of thing a local gang did over money or turf. It would be several years before the murders were recognized as part of a larger pattern.

1996 Murders

For almost three years, the forests were quiet. Then, on the night of May 18, 1996, Yegor Sidorenko and his girlfriend, Kolmychkova, parked near a hamlet called Sorokiny Khutor. Around three in the morning, she got out and saw someone among the trees, watching. Sidorenko got out to talk to the stranger and was stabbed about eleven times. Wounded, he watched the attacker chase Kolmychkova down and stab her, then drive off in their car with her still inside.1

Sidorenko survived. He crawled to the highway and was picked up by a passing driver. He later gave police a description detailed enough for a facial composite: a man in camouflage and a mask, carrying a knife and a spade. [1]

Three days later, the couple's car was found empty and abandoned about 15 kilometers away; Kolmychkova's body was found the next day roughly 150 meters from the car. She had been stabbed nine times in the chest.

For the first time, investigators wondered whether there may be a link between this crime and the unsolved 1993 case. The pattern —a couple attacked as they were parked in the woods at night—was too similar to ignore.

Through the summer of 1996, the attacks continued around the same stretch of forest. On July 24, 1996, investigators found a burned car near Studenyi Ovrag with the body of its owner, Isaichev, inside and the body of 19-year-old Vedernikova in the trunk. The fire destroyed most of the evidence, but it was determined that both victims had been stabbed before being set on fire. 2

On the night of August 1, two more victims were attacked in the same area. One was seriously injured but survived; the other went missing, and their body was discovered a week later near the village of Vodino. [1]

Then, early on September 3, 1996, near Novosemeykino, a man named Mamuka Santaladze and his girlfriend, Alevtina Butkevich, were fired on through their car window with a sawed-off shotgun. Santaladze was hit and then knifed. However, he managed to grab Butkevich's hand, and the two ran through the forest and made it to the highway, where they flagged down a car. Both victims survived and gave a second description of the assailant. [1]

The couple’s stolen car turned up the next day with the radio and cassette tapes gone, a curious detail investigators had noticed at almost every scene. On October 6, two more victims, Bochkarev and Goleva, disappeared from the same forest. Goleva’s body was found nine days later, her hands bound, while Bochkarev’s body was not discovered until November 13, more than fifteen kilometers away. [1]

By the autumn of 1996, the press had named the killer the “Forest Maniac,” and in Russian reports “Leshy,” the forest spirit of folklore said to lure travelers off the road forever. There were unsubstantiated rumors that he called out for help in a woman's voice to draw victims in, and that one body had been posed. Though these claims were never confirmed, they only added to the growing fear. [1]

The Chase

By November, the investigation was intensified, with patrols increased and concentrated around the forest roads. In the early hours of November 23, 1996, Dmitry Korotkov and Elena Kulakovskaya were killed as they sat together in a blue Lada near the Upravlenchesky–Gorny road.3

The attacker took Korotkov's car toward the Krasnoglinsky Highway, where inspector Pavel Esipov and 21-year-old officer Yevgeny Zemlyakov noticed the car pull from the forest with its headlights off. They signaled for it to stop, but the driver sped up.

The chase ran several kilometers before the driver jumped out and ran into the trees. Zemlyakov followed on foot, and the man turned and fired the sawed-off shotgun into his stomach before escaping into the dark. Luckily, Zemlyakov survived.

In the abandoned car's trunk, officers found Korotkov's body, and beside it a camouflage jacket which his family said did not belong to him. Kulakovskaya was missing. Her decomposed remains were found the following May, about 300 meters from the Lesnoye cemetery. [1]

By spring 1997 the pressure was enormous. After the shooting of Officer Zemlyakov, the regional prosecutor assembled a task force of 29. Officially, they were investigating the attempted murder of a policeman, but everyone knew they were hunting the Forest Maniac, who by then was linked to at least nine deaths. [2] The killer clearly knew the woods, and investigators focused on people familiar with the area, including those whose work took them into isolated country.

Decoy officers even posed as couples in an attempt to draw out the killer. During the investigation, evidence began to point in an unsettling direction. Some of the crimes occurred near penal colonies, and in one case a victim's hands had been restrained with a trouser belt fitted with handcuffs that were standard issue for prison-colony officers. [1] The search widened to police and correctional staff.

Ultimately, about 1,500 law-enforcement personnel were checked. Four fit the profile, and in April 1997, blood, hair, and clothing from the four as well as from the crime scenes were sent to labs in Moscow. As they waited on the results, one suspect drew particular attention: Dmitry Viktorovich Voroshilov. [1]

Arrest of Dmitry Voroshilov

Dmitry Voroshilov was a 30-year-old Major of the Internal Service and Chief of Security at a penal colony near Samara that held convicts being treated for tuberculosis. His job put him around weapons, restraints, and the surrounding country, and his build matched survivors' description of a physically powerful man. [1]

Colleagues painted an unsettling picture: complaints from female staff, a slap, a threat to kill a doctor, a habit of calling women “witches.” A psychiatric evaluation flagged a personality disorder and epilepsy yet cleared him for duty. His martial-arts trainer called him an unusually capable fighter who could strike with either hand [1]

When the lab results came back in mid-1997, the case rested on the camouflage jacket left in Korotkov's car, but the forensics were far from clean. This was blood-group and trace analysis, not DNA, and the blood-group results were inconclusive because the stains matched three different groups and Korotkov and Voroshilov shared the same one.

Investigators arrested Voroshilov at correctional colony No. 65/19 on July 30, 1997; and within days he was charged with two murders and three assaults. He denied all of the charges, saying he'd been set up. Voroshilov was sent to the Serbsky Center in Moscow for evaluation; he was ruled sane but showed signs of epilepsy and a mixed personality disorder. [1]

Conviction and Sentence

At trial in 1999, before Judge Valery Kurylev, the prosecution relied heavily on jacket forensics and eyewitnesses. One of the officers who chased Voroshilov identified him but admitted he'd seen the fleeing man's face lit by headlights for only seconds; thus, the identification was ruled shaky.

Worse for the state, the two survivors who had seen their attacker up close — Santaladze and Butkevich could not identify Voroshilov; Santaladze insisted their attack was an unrelated carjacking, not the Forest Maniac. [1]

The case also drew scandal. Almost immediately after his arrest, Voroshilov said he'd been tortured into cooperating during a September 1997 interrogation. Six officers were investigated, and the case dragged into 1999, ending in acquittal, though all six officers were quietly dismissed. [1]

In the end, the Samara District Court convicted Voroshilov of murdering Korotkov and Kulakovskaya and of the assaults on Santaladze, Butkevich and Officer Zemlyakov. He was sentenced to 15 years: the maximum under the code at the time. The Supreme Court of Russia upheld the conviction on March 6, 2000. A complaint to the European Court of Human Rights was rejected on December 8, 2005.

Voroshilov served his full term and was released in July 2012. [1]

Case Remains Unresolved

At first, it seemed that Voroshilov’s conviction had put an end to the case. However, even after his arrest, six similar murders occurred in the woods around Samara between 1997 and 1998, leaving many to believe that the killer was still out there. However, authorities maintained that they had arrested and convicted the man responsible for the “Forest Maniac” killings. [1]

Then, in February 1999, a fire tore through the Samara Regional Interior Ministry building, killing 57 officers and injuring hundreds. According to Russian accounts, it also destroyed huge volumes of evidence and files, including the camouflage jacket on which every forensic match had depended. [1]

The questions kept coming. In 2023, Russia's Investigative Committee reportedly reviewed the case, leading to doubts about Voroshilov’s guilt, citing a claim that he couldn't drive, a claim that sat oddly beside a driver's license in his own file. [1]

In June 2025, Russian outlets reported that Voroshilov, by then around 58, had moved to Dnipropetrovsk Oblast around 2022 and joined the Ukrainian armed forces.4

Today the forests around the old Triangle of Love are quiet. Couples still go there, and there have been no killings matching the Forest Maniac in close to thirty years. With the key evidence long destroyed, the Forest Maniac case endures as an unresolved chapter in Samara's history.

Background

Between 1982 and 1994, several women and girls in and around the Kansas City metro area fell victim to a vicious serial killer. After disappearing, their bodies were later found floating in the Missouri River, often partially dismembered. The strange pattern of severing the victims' legs led authorities to link the killings across more than a decade.

The unknown murderer, who came to be known as the Missouri River Killer, was never caught. To this day, the case remains unsolved, though many believe the killer died a free man.

A Chilling Pattern

On August 6th, 1986, the body of 24-year-old Melody Jo Milliner was found floating in the Missouri River.1 A resident of Kansas City, Melody had been working as a prostitute to support herself and her 2-year-old daughter, and she could often be found near Independence Avenue.

Police initially theorized she may have met her killer while working on the street. Her father owned a farm in Kansas that Melody often visited, and according to him, she was, or had been, assisting police with an ongoing investigation prior to her death. The autopsy revealed she had died from multiple stab wounds.

Less than two years later, on May 7th, 1988, the body of Linda Dennis was found on the north side of the river. Also a native of Kansas City, Linda was only 17. Authorities could not determine a cause of death due to the advanced state of decomposition, but her body was found entangled in driftwood in a manner that suggested foul play. Linda had previously been arrested on a prostitution charge that was later dropped; though she may still have been working, police could not develop solid leads.

The next discovery came only three days later, when a fisherman found the body of 19-year-old Kimberly Rash, who had gone missing little more than a month earlier. Like Melody, Kimberly had worked as a prostitute in Kansas City, though not in the same areas, and like Melody, she had died of multiple stab wounds (more than 31).

The links between these cases could no longer be ignored.

The very same day, 16-year-old Rhonda Dennis was found floating in the river. She had also been stabbed, precisely 31 times, and her clothes had been removed. Unlike some earlier victims, Rhonda had no known history of prostitution; the one potential link was that she lived on Independence Avenue, the same street where Melody usually worked. A pattern was emerging.

A Disturbing M.O.

Beyond the other similarities, one bizarre detail recurred among the recovered bodies. In the cases of Melody and Kimberly, both of their legs had been amputated. Two bodies turning up within two years of each other, in the same river, each one with both legs removed, this detail all but eliminated the possibility of coincidence.

When 13-year-old Beverlie Tracy's body was found floating in the river on April 15th, 1991, eleven days after she was reported missing, police suspected the same offender. Although Beverlie had died of gunshot wounds to the chest rather than stab wounds, both of her legs had been amputated.

Three years later, on September 12th, 1994, the gruesome M.O. resurfaced. No body was found at first — only a severed leg. The following day, the torso of 36-year-old Viola McCoy was recovered.

Viola had last been seen on September 8th after reportedly running off following an argument with her boyfriend, and she had a history of drug abuse. Whatever the circumstances, the amputation of her legs suggested her case was related to the others.

The recurring pattern prompted police to re-examine older unsolved cases, and in doing so they may have identified the killer's first victim. Annette K. Parker, 27, had been found floating in the Missouri River on May 31st, 1982. She had been stabbed 13 times in the chest and had a rope tied around her neck.

Unlike the later victims, Annette was not from Kansas City but from Omaha, Nebraska, and had been missing a little over a week when two fishermen found her. Because of the similarity in M.O., police came to believe Annette was the earliest victim of the Missouri River Killer.

Suspects

In 1988, following the discovery of Linda, Kimberly, and Rhonda, the FBI joined a special unit with officers from Ray County and the Kansas City Police Department. Within a month, however, the task force was disbanded, and the FBI withdrew. As Ray County Sheriff Tom Harmon told the Columbia Daily Tribune in June 1988, investigators “just couldn’t put anything together.”2

However, authorities promised to pursue any new leads.

In August 1992, police thought they had a suspect: a local Kansas City doctor previously charged with drugging and sexually assaulting two female patients during house calls. Speculation ran wild after Grain Valley Police Chief Skip Hedges claimed the doctor's office was located near Independence Avenue, implying a link to the area where Melody worked and Beverlie lived.

That claim about the office location proved false, and no evidence tied the doctor to the murders. His attorney, Robert Beaird, called the investigation ludicrous, saying he "wouldn't be surprised if next week we hear a report that ties [his client] to the Kennedy assassination."3

During the investigation, police focused on a man named Gregory Breeden. A Kansas City supply clerk who had served in the U.S. Navy from 1965 to 1968, Breeden had initially been looked at in relation to Annette Parker's death. He claimed the two were engaged and was released without charge. He would nonetheless become the primary suspect in Parker's death and the six other killings authorities attributed to the same offender.

On November 2nd, 1994, Kansas City Police raided Breeden's home in the middle of the night. He was arrested on check-forgery charges, but during the search, authorities recovered 19 knives as well as clothing that resembled the type Melody Milliner had been wearing when she disappeared.

In 1996, while Breeden was serving a 10-year sentence for check fraud, he was indicted for Viola McCoy's murder. Even still, bodies continued to surface in the river during his incarceration, though investigators at the time considered them unrelated.

On April 1st, 1999, the murder charge was dropped due to a lack of evidence after a jailhouse informant refused to cooperate. After his release, Breeden maintained his innocence, admitting he knew some of the women from the Independence Avenue area but denying any involvement in their deaths.

In May 2014, Breeden was found dead in his Bates County motel room, believed to have been dead for as long as a week; his death was ruled natural.4 As the last primary suspect, his passing was a blow to victims’ families still searching for answers.

Closing Thoughts

With the death of the primary suspect and the absence of any significant new leads, investigators had little to go on. The case remains open, and anyone with information is encouraged to come forward. However long ago it may seem, the families of these women still hope for the closure they deserve.

On a quiet night in March 1984, the president of one of Japan's most famous candy companies was abducted from his home by masked men. What first looked like a frightening kidnapping soon morphed into something much bigger and stranger.

Ransom demands, poisoned candy, taunting letters, public humiliation of the police, and a criminal group that always seemed one step ahead.

For more than a year, Japan was haunted by an unknown group calling itself “The Monster with 21 Faces.” More than forty years later, the questions remain. Who were they? Why did they target Japan's biggest food companies? And how did they vanish so completely that no one was ever charged?

The Monster Emerges

During the 1980s, Japan was seen as one of the safest, most disciplined, and modern countries in the world. Its cities were busy, its companies powerful, its police respected. People trusted the food they bought. Families bought sweets for their children without a second thought. However, in 1984, a shadowy group of criminals would shatter that sense of safety.

The criminals later took the name “The Monster with 21 Faces,” or Kaijin Nijūichi Mensō. The name was adapted from a fictional villain — "The Fiend with Twenty Faces" — created by the mystery writer Edogawa Rampo.1 The gang simply added one more face. Yet this monster was not a work of fiction; it was hauntingly real.

The group committed crimes, wrote taunting letters, mocked the police, threatened powerful companies, poisoned food, and turned candy into something to be feared.

Background

During the 1990s, the city of Bath in South West England was at the center of Britain’s longest-running serial rape investigation, codenamed Operation Eagle. The assailant, who police linked to at least 17 attacks, came to be known as the “Batman Rapist” after leaving behind a baseball cap with a Batman logo at one of the crime scenes.

Despite the scope of the investigation and the resources allocated, the rapist was never captured or identified. More than thirty years later, the case remains open. This is the story of the man the press called the Batman Rapist.

A Historic City

Named for its well-preserved Roman baths and elegant Georgian terraces, the city of Bath, Somerset, located about 100 miles west of London, in South West England, is known for its beauty and history and draws thousands of visitors annually. In 1987, UNESCO named the city a World Heritage Site.

Like any city, Bath was not free of crime — there were burglaries, car thefts, the occasional robbery — but violent crime was rare compared with London, Birmingham, or Manchester. Women routinely walked back to parked cars after an evening out without giving it much thought.

However, that would all change beginning in the early 1990s, when a series of abductions and sexual assaults shook the area.

Assaults Begin

On May 21, 1991, a 36-year-old woman finishing a night shift drove home to the Southdown area of Bath. As she parked in a lane behind her house, a man suddenly seized her, covered her mouth, and held a knife to her throat. He forced her to drive to a rough track off Combe Hay Lane, on the edge of the city, where he raped her before disappearing into the dark.1

The victim reported the attack at once, and Avon and Somerset Constabulary began to investigate. She described her attacker as a white man, around 5 feet 9 inches tall, slim, with blue eyes and short brown hair, clean-shaven, with a noticeable scar below his lower lip. 2

He wore dark clothing and seemed calm and in control — a man who appeared to know exactly what he wanted to do. Then, on October 23, 1991, an 18-year-old woman was attacked on Bathwick Hill, and her description of the assailant closely matched the description of the man from the Southdown attack. The similarities were hard to ignore.

An Inconsistent Pattern

After the October 1991 attack, the assaults stopped for a period of three years until the next attack in November 1994. This assault was again followed by a period of inactivity until September 1996, when a 19-year-old woman was abducted and raped in Kingswood, near Bristol.

Even though all of the previous and later assaults occurred within the city of Bath, the Kingswood rape was linked to the suspect due to the M.O. and description of the perpetrator. The attacker would approach his victims as they reached their cars, and then drive them to a secluded area where the assaults occurred.

After interviewing several of the victims, investigators found that the attacker seemed to have a sexual fixation on women’s tights, often ripping them during the attacks. They also found it unusual that after the assaults, the rapist would often drive the victims back to the location where he had abducted them before fleeing.

According to a January 2000 Guardian article, there were three assaults in 1996 and another three in 1997. After that, there was another period of inactivity until 1999.

By the mid-1990s, detectives had stopped treating the attacks as separate crimes. The victims appeared to be chosen because they were alone — students, workers, women out by themselves — not because the offender knew them. Most attacks came in the evening, between roughly 6 and 8 p.m., or in the late hours after the pubs and clubs had emptied.

All but one of the assaults occurred within the city of Bath, leading investigators to conclude that the rapist was very familiar with the city, its side streets, secluded car parks, and country lanes, leading police to believe he lived, worked, or spent significant time in the city.

The “Batman Rapist”

On the evening of January 26, 1999, a 39-year-old woman was getting into her car on Forrester Lane when a man tried to abduct her. She fought back, screamed, and resisted. Fearing the noise would draw witnesses, the attacker fled, and in his rush, he dropped his baseball cap.

Lying on the ground was a faded cap bearing a Batman logo. The hat was collected, photographed, and sent for forensic examination in the hope it carried fibers, hairs, or biological traces. Despite the limits of the technology at the time, scientists recovered a DNA profile believed to belong to the attacker. It was a major breakthrough after nearly a decade chasing a man with no name.

As journalists reported the incident, newspapers and television began calling the unknown offender the "Batman Rapist." The name spread quickly, and the case became national news. Detectives appealed to the public, asking people to think about friends, relatives, or colleagues who might fit the description or who wore such a cap.

Surprisingly, the near-miss did not deter the rapist. Investigators believe that within minutes of fleeing Forrester Lane, the offender attacked another woman nearby, forcing her toward the village of Monkton Combe. The crime illustrated just how determined he was, even after nearly being caught.

Operation Eagle

By early 2000, Avon and Somerset Police established a major investigation codenamed Operation Eagle.3 Senior detectives reviewed each attack, comparing witness statements, crime scene reports, and all physical evidence collected since 1991, mapping every location for patterns. The more they dug, the clearer it became that the same individual was responsible for all of the assaults.

Authorities appealed to the public for assistance. Thousands of witness statements were collected; hundreds of tips came in. None identified the offender outright, but each one helped to eliminate suspects. Detectives built a behavioral profile of a patient, methodical man who probably held a regular job and blended quietly into the community.

The man was described as a White male with a slim to medium build, between 30 and 50 years old, who was very familiar with the city of Bath and was also likely familiar with the Bristol area.

On January 25 2000, the case featured on the BBC's Crimewatch UK, with a reconstruction of how the offender approached victims. Six women who had never reported their attacks came forward after the show had aired. Tips from viewers poured in, and in October 2000, the operation carried out what was described as the largest leaflet distribution in a British criminal investigation at the time, reaching around 25,000 homes in Bath.

In January 2001, the Forensic Science Service applied a then-new technique, Low Copy Number (LCN) DNA profiling, which could recover a usable profile from far smaller amounts of genetic material. It gave investigators a full DNA fingerprint of the attacker but no name to match it to. Detectives asked roughly 2,000 men whose names had surfaced during the investigation to give DNA voluntarily. One by one, all 2,000 names were cleared.

Offender Profile

With the DNA testing failing to return a match, investigators were left to theorize as to the offender’s identity. In addition to the physical description given by victims, and the fact that the rapist was familiar with the city of Bath, police also took note of the long periods of inactivity in between assaults.

They speculated that during these periods, the offender may have been in prison, serving in the armed forces, or otherwise living away from the area. A name submitted to Crimewatch — a diplomat's son — was found to have been living abroad with his father during some of the gap dates, though this tip did not lead to an arrest.

Detectives also questioned whether the Batman Rapist may have been tied to other unsolved cases, most prominently the disappearance and murder of Melanie Hall. Hall, a 25-year-old hospital clerical worker, vanished on June 9, 1996, after a night out at a Bath nightclub; her remains were found in October 2009 near a slip road on the M5. Because she disappeared in Bath during the same period, investigators compared the DNA; however, the forensic evidence did not support a link between the two cases.

Current Status of the Case

More than three decades after the first attack, Operation Eagle has never closed. There have been no confirmed attacks since January 2000, but detectives continue to review the evidence whenever new technology or information emerges, making it Britain's longest-running serial rape investigation.

Modern methods such as forensic genetic genealogy have solved decades-old cold cases elsewhere by comparing crime-scene DNA with family-history databases, though its use varies by country and legal framework.

A DNA profile can only identify someone if there is a sample to match it against; if the offender's DNA has never entered the relevant databases, the profile alone cannot name him. That has been one of Operation Eagle's greatest frustrations.

Avon and Somerset Police have never stopped appealing for help, and the charity Crimestoppers has offered a £10,000 reward for information leading to the offender's capture — a reward that still stands.4 The investigation has also shaped how serious sexual-offense cases are handled in Britain, reinforcing the value of preserving physical evidence for decades so newer techniques can be applied later.

More than thirty years after the first attack, the Batman Rapist remains unidentified.

Background

Even within the disturbing world of true crime, there is something deeply unsettling about the unknown. Whether we are talking about missing persons cases or unidentified criminals, our minds instinctively yearn for resolution. When we are left with unanswered questions, we struggle to find closure and make sense of what has happened.

The term serial killer often brings to mind notorious individuals such as Ted Bundy, Gary Ridgeway, or Dennis Rader. These men were unmasked and exposed as the monsters they were. However, in the cases of Ridgeway and Rader, it took decades before they were identified and arrested. For years, they were known only as the Green River Killer and BTK Killer, respectively.

Luckily, through the efforts of law enforcement as well as the arrogance and reckless behavior of the killers, they were eventually brought to justice. However, over the years, there have been several serial killers who were never caught or even identified. One of the most famous examples is the elusive Jack the Ripper, who stalked and murdered sex workers during the late 1880s in the infamous Whitechapel slums of East London.

Though speculation about his identity continued over the years, he was never positively identified. Another lesser-known serial killer who was active a few decades after the Ripper was a mysterious figure known as “Billy the Axeman.” Discrepancies arise about the number of victims and the years that the killer was active, with the conservative estimate at 24-30 victims and being active primarily between 1911 and 1912.

Some estimates place the victim count closer to 100, which would make him one of the most prolific serial killers in American history. Whatever the actual number is, the killer’s identity was never discovered, and his story is one of tragedy and senseless violence.

“The Man From the Train”

In 2017, Bill James and his daughter, Rachel McCarthy James, published their book The Man from the Train. The authors conducted extensive research into the string of axe murders that occurred in the early 1900s.

Their investigation began with the most well-known case, the Villisca Axe Murders. Based on the murderer’s ability to successfully murder eight victims in a small home without rousing the neighbors, Bill suspected that the killer was very experienced. After additional research, he found similar cases in old newspaper articles and brought Rachel on to assist in the research.

Through their research, the pair uncovered a pattern of similar murders dating back to 1898. They focused on murders that aligned with the M.O. of their suspect, and by comparing the timelines, they identified and isolated family murders that were likely perpetrated by the same killer. After mapping the timelines and suspected murders, they were unable to identify any murders between 1906 and 1909 definitively.

Their book theorizes that the suspect may have been in prison during this period. From 1900 to 1910, they identified eleven cases that they confidently believe can be attributed to a single suspect, along with thirteen additional cases that seem highly probable.

Unsolved Murders

On the night of June 9th, 1911, William and Ruth Hill, along with Ruth’s two children, Philip and Dorothy, were brutally murdered during the night in their family home in Ardenwald, Oregon. All four victims had been murdered in their beds, and the murder weapon — a bloodied axe — was left behind. Following the murders, the perpetrator had moved the victims’ bodies and covered them with sheets or blankets.

Ruth and her daughter showed signs of sexual assault postmortem. The windows of the family home had been covered by the murderer, who hung cloth to conceal the horrors within. The family’s neighbor, Nathan Harvey, was initially charged with committing the murders, but he was absolved and acquitted the following year.

Exactly one month later, in Rainier, Washington, Archie and Nettie Coble were attacked in the middle of the night. Again, the couple had been murdered in their beds with the blunt side of an axe, and Nettie was assaulted postmortem. The bodies were also moved after death, and Archie’s face was covered. Given the similarity in M.O. to the Hill family murders, the authorities and press speculated that the cases were connected.

The killer or killers appeared to go quiet for some time, but the deadly spree was far from over. On the night of September 17th, 1911, the Burnham and Wayne families were attacked in Colorado Springs, Colorado. May Burnham, along with her children Nellie and John, were murdered. Both families had been attacked with the blunt end of an axe; their bodies moved after death, and sheets covered their faces.

Once again, the killer had taken care to cover the windows at some point before or after the murders. The houses were located next door to one another. As with the previous murders, there was no evidence of robbery, and valuables were left undisturbed in the homes.

Though some initially believed there could be multiple murderers in action, many came to suspect a single suspect. Many speculated that the murderer might be traveling via train, which would explain how he was able to navigate between locales and disappear with ease.

On September 30th, the Dawson family was murdered in Monmouth, Illinois. William, his wife, and their twelve-year-old daughter Georgia lived near the railroad line, and they were discovered by members of First United Presbyterian Church when William did not turn up for his janitor shift at the church.

The entire family had been bludgeoned in their beds with a blunt object. The windows were covered, the bodies were moved, and the victims were draped with sheets or blankets. However, unlike the previous killings, the weapon used to kill the Dawson family turned out to be a gas pipe, which authorities found discarded near a railroad line.

Some weeks later, police found a small flashlight in the area, which bore the inscription “Colorado Springs” and the date of “Sept. 4, ’11.” Given the double murders that had occurred earlier that month in Colorado Springs, this lends strongly to the theory that a single suspect was traveling by train and committing these horrific and gruesome murders.

On the night of October 16th, 1911, in Ellsworth, Kansas, William and Pauline Showman, along with their young children Lester, Fern, and Fenton, were murdered in their home with the blunt end of an axe. The family home was located near a railroad line. Once again, all the windows had been covered, and Pauline’s body had been staged in a provocative manner. There was no indication of robbery.

“Billy the Axeman”

Bloodhounds were able to trace the killer’s scent to an intersection of two railway lines, after which the trail went cold. The press was convinced that this was the work of a lone traveling killer and dubbed him “Billy the Axeman.”

Billy the Axeman seemingly took a brief hiatus from killing but returned to his murderous ways the following year. On June 5th, 1912, a young couple was murdered in Paola, Kansas. Rollin and Anna Hudson had recently moved to the area, and when Rollin did not report to work the following day, neighbors forcibly entered the home.

They found Rollin and Anna with severely crushed skulls, the damage caused by repeated blows with a blunt weapon. The screen of a window at the back of the house had been pried off, and the bodies of the victims were covered.

Nothing was stolen from the home. The same night, someone had pried the screen from a window in the Longmeyer family’s home and climbed inside. Mrs. Longmeyer awoke to the sound of breaking glass, and upon being discovered, the suspect fled. The Hudsons and the Longmeyers lived near the intersection of two railway lines.

The Villisca Axe Murders

Perhaps the most famous incident involving an axe murderer is the case of the Villisca Axe Murders. On June 9th, 1912, the Moore family was killed in their home in Villisca, Iowa. Josiah and Sara Moore had four children: Herman, Mary Katherine, Arthur Boyd, and Paul.

On the night of the murders, Lena and Ina Stillinger, ages eleven and eight, were having a sleepover at the Moore house. All eight people were brutally murdered in the middle of the night.

On the morning of June 10th, neighbors grew worried when they hadn’t seen anyone come out of the Moore house. A concerned neighbor alerted Josiah’s brother Ross, who immediately came to investigate. What he found was horrific. He discovered his brother, sister-in-law, nieces and nephews, and the Stillinger girls all dead inside the home.

Henry Horton was Villisca’s local law enforcement officer and the first to arrive at the crime scene. Horton conducted a full search of the house, where he found the bodies of Josiah and Sarah and their four children: Herman, 11; Mary, 10; Arthur, 7; Paul, 5; as well as the two Stillinger sisters.

The bodies of each victim had been so brutally bludgeoned that their faces were described as being ‘beaten to a bloody pulp.’ The murderer had used an axe on each of the victims, which was found in the guest bedroom, propped up against the wall. Strangely, the killer only used the axe blade on Josiah whilst using the handle to bludgeon the rest of the family and the Stillinger sisters.

Josiah had also received the most blows, totaling around 30, and the assailant had done this with such ferocity that there was a gauge mark in the ceiling above Josiah’s body. His face was so severely mangled that he was virtually unrecognizable. This has led to some speculation that Josiah’s murder may have been personal and committed by someone he may have known.

In addition to covering the victims and the windows, all the mirrors in the home were also covered. As with the previous murders in Kansas, the suspect had lit a lamp, removed its chimney, and put it under a piece of furniture.

Once again, nothing of value was taken from the family home. Lena Stillinger was posed in a similar manner to Pauline Showman, one that showed a sexual motivation for the crime. Based on evidence left at the scene, it appeared that the killer had not directly sexually violated Lena’s body but that he may have engaged in a sexual act after posing her. Police used bloodhounds to track the killer’s scent, and once again, the trail went cold at the intersection of two railway lines.

Though several suspects were investigated, including Henry Lee Moore (no relation), who was convicted for the brutal axe murders of his mother and grandmother in December 1912, just six months after the Villisca murders, no one was ever convicted of the killings.

Possible Connected Murders

Between the years 1911 and 1912, Texas and Louisiana were plagued with numerous unsolved axe murders. The M.O. was similar to the Midwestern cases, with families living close to railways being attacked at night with no indication of robbery.

The number of murders is disputed, but most sources agree that there were thirteen families attacked, with a total of 49 victims killed. However, the killings differed in one major way: the Midwestern murders only involved white families, whereas the Texas and Louisiana victims were all black or of mixed race. The press referred to this series of murders as the “Mulatto Axe Murders.”

Author Todd C. Elliott published his work in 2015, asserting that a single murderer was responsible for both the Midwestern murders and the Mulatto Axe Murders. His primary rationale was the similarity in M.O. and the fact that the gaps in the Midwestern murders coincide with the periods of murders in Texas and Louisiana.

However, many speculate that the Mulatto Axe Murders may have been the work of a copycat. At the time of the murders, the term “serial killer” had not yet been coined; if the Midwestern murders and Mulatto Axe Murders were the work of a single individual, he would have been an extremely prolific serial killer indeed.

Potential Suspects

In addition to Henry Lee Moore, who eventually served 36 years in prison for the murders of his mother and grandmother, another potential suspect was a German immigrant named Paul Mueller.

In their 2017 book The Man from the Train, Bill James and Rachel McCarthy point to numerous similarities among the cases they studied. They believe the same killer was responsible for the Villisca Axe Murders but that he only perpetrated one of the Mulatto Axe Murders, while the rest were the work of copycats.

The authors believe that the killer was a sexual sadist with an affinity for young girls, which is consistent with the evidence left in the murders, including the fact that the young girls appear to have been killed last, and some of these victims had defensive wounds. The authors believe the killer was a German immigrant by the name of Paul Mueller.

While it was difficult to gather information on Mueller, Bill and Rachel were able to find some documentation. Mueller claimed to be a veteran of the German military and would have been in his mid-thirties around the start of the murders. He was a talented carpenter and often worked as a lumberjack, which would explain his adeptness with an axe. Mueller was short with a very muscular build, giving him both the strength to commit violent murders with a heavy weapon as well as the stature to climb through windows.

The Jameses also suggest Mueller may be responsible for the infamous Hinterkaifeck Farms case. On March 31st, 1922, the six victims were murdered on the family farm just north of Munich, Germany. The killer had murdered all six victims with an axe, and several of the bodies were stacked in the barn.

It is one of the most horrific and confusing cases in Germany’s history, and the case remains unsolved. Bill and Rachel theorize that Mueller fled the country following the conclusion of the Midwest murder spree in 1912 and that ten years later, he slaughtered the Gruber family in his home country.

Closing Thoughts

The story of “Billy the Axeman” and the trail of unsolved axe murders remains one of the most disturbing episodes of the early twentieth century. Many questions remain unanswered. Was a single individual responsible for all of the murders? What, if any, was the motivation for these seemingly random and senseless murders? Though researchers have provided some interesting theories, it is likely that these questions will never truly be answered.
