Background

For those outside the entertainment industry, Ronni Chasen may not have been a familiar name; however, within Hollywood circles, her name loomed large. Over the decades, Chasen had climbed the ranks of multiple prestigious agencies as an all-star publicist, successfully directing award-winning campaigns before building her own agency and representing some of Hollywood’s biggest names.

On November 15th, 2010, as Chasen returned from a movie premiere, she was shot and killed while driving on Sunset Boulevard. Police would later call it a “robbery gone wrong”, but many people close to the situation did not buy that explanation.

More than a decade and a half after her death, the questions remain: what actually happened to Ronni Chasen, and will we ever know the truth?

Early Life and Career

On October 17th, 1946, Veronica Cohen was born. At the time of her birth, Carolyn and Irving Cohen already had a ten-year-old son, Lawrence. The two children grew up in New York City, spending time in both the Bronx and Manhattan.

Not much is known about Veronica’s early life, other than a prominent winning streak in local yo-yo competitions promoted by a toy company. According to her brother, Veronica had always dreamed of becoming a publicist after being inspired by Roy Rogers and Dale Evans.

In Veronica’s early twenties, she began working as a publicist for her brother, who had gone on to become the writer, producer, and director now known as Larry Cohen. While still in New York, Veronica attempted to break into soap opera acting, which prompted her to adopt the stage name, Ronni Chasen. After succeeding as a publicist for her brother, Ronni headed west to Los Angeles, where she served as publicity director for American International Pictures.

Ronni’s career began to take off in Los Angeles, and she became the Executive Vice President of Motion Pictures with Rogers & Cowan, a position she would hold for ten years. In 1993, she became the Senior Vice President for Publicity at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

So far in her career, Ronni had already orchestrated several successful campaigns, including the Oscar campaigns for Rocky and Driving Miss Daisy, the latter of which earned the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1990. However, Ronni’s greatest individual successes were yet to come.

Success Story

After holding prestigious positions with top agencies and numerous successful publicity campaigns, Ronni turned her focus to her own PR firm, Chasen & Company. In this role, she and her agency represented some of Hollywood’s top actors, directors, and composers, including Hans Zimmer, John Williams, and Michael Douglas. Her firm represented a wide range of clients and served as the publicist for some of the biggest names in the industry.

Under Ronni’s leadership, Chasen & Co. flourished. The agency ran PR and award campaigns tied to many famous films, including Alice in Wonderland, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, He’s Just Not That Into You, The Wrestler, Sweeney Todd, Babel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and many more. In 2000, Chasen & Co. was chosen to handle public relations for the 72nd Academy Awards, a prestigious honor for any PR firm.

During Ronni’s illustrious career in Hollywood, she contributed to over 150 Oscar nominations and campaigns. Many of these campaigns resulted in awards, and she earned a reputation as a “power publicist.”

Over the course of her career, Ronni also personally directed the Oscar campaigns for seven Best Picture winners, including Slumdog Millionaire, No Country for Old Men, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Chicago, and others. The success of Chasen & Co. was not limited to Academy Awards: the agency also helped their musically inclined clientele garner more than 65 Grammy nominations.

November 15, 2010

On November 15th, 2010, Ronni had attended the premiere of Burlesque at a hotel in Hollywood. She and her agency were directing an Oscar campaign for Cher, who was one of the film’s leads. Ronni left the premiere and was driving back to her flat in the Regency Wilshire building.

At approximately 12:30 a.m., she was driving down Sunset Boulevard in Beverly Hills when she stopped at a red light at the corner of Whittier Drive. As she waited at the light, shots were fired through her passenger side window.

Ronni was struck multiple times, including twice in the chest, once in the right arm, and another near her right shoulder. This final shot would prove to be fatal, as the bullet made its way to Ronni’s heart. Despite being gravely wounded, she kept control of the vehicle for approximately a quarter mile before crashing the car.

This area was known to be safe, and there hadn’t been a homicide there for five years. The sound of gunshots ringing out in the night alerted the local residents, who immediately called the police.

By the time first responders arrived on scene, it was too late. They extracted Ronni from the car, still clinging to life, and transported her to Cedars-Sinai hospital. Sadly, at just after 1:00 a.m. on November 16th, Ronni Chasen was pronounced dead.

Investigation

In the aftermath of Ronni Chasen’s death, those left behind struggled to make sense of it. Nobody could understand why someone would murder her on her way home from a premiere. Rumors began to circulate about potential gambling debts, shady art deals, and potentially fraudulent film financing.

Photos from the crime scene showed that Ronni’s shoes were still planted near the gas pedals, and her Prada purse was left undisturbed in the passenger seat. There were no bullet casings found at the scene, and a weapon was never located. Whoever had killed Ronni had done it quickly, quietly, and then slipped back into the night.

Eight months later, the Beverly Hills Police Department announced that it was closing the case. According to them, ex-convict Harold Smith had killed Ronni in a robbery attempt gone wrong. When they had attempted to question him two weeks after Ronni’s death, he took his own life. For many, this explanation was unsatisfactory.

If it were a robbery attempt, why was Ronni’s purse left sitting there? Why had the killer not snatched her keys and emptied her apartment of the countless pieces of priceless art and fine clothing? With a rumored net worth of over $6 million, if this were a robbery attempt, why had absolutely nothing been taken? The pieces simply were not adding up.

Theories and Potential Motives

When looking at the possibility that Harold Smith was the shooter, there is a potential motive, as years prior, Smith had been in an accident involving Ronni and was rumored to be unhappy with the settlement.

Even so, Smith did not have a car and rode a bicycle. Even if he might have concluded that Chasen would be attending the premiere, he would have had no way of knowing when she’d be leaving or the route she’d be taking home.

One theory surrounding Ronni’s death involves the distribution of her will. Of the more than $6 million estate, nearly all of it was left to her brother and one niece. Larry Cohen had two daughters, and therefore Ronni had two nieces.

She had intentionally, as outlined in her will, capped her other niece’s inheritance to a measly $10. However, some of the people mentioned in Ronni’s will had already died, so it seems the document had not been revised in some time, and no updated will was ever found. If her death were somehow linked to a disgruntled niece angry about being cut out of the will, why did she wait so long to act on it?

Nearly six years after Ronni’s death, previously unreleased files from the investigation were reviewed. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this evidence casts doubt on the BHPD's findings. The police were never required to present any evidence to a prosecutor, much less convince a jury that they had correctly identified the suspect.

These documents appear to suggest that authorities may have been less confident in their conclusions than they had led the public to believe, including doubts about how Ronni died and whether multiple suspects may have been involved. With the primary suspect dead and some key documents conveniently excluded from consideration, we may never know the truth.

Closing Thoughts

Ronni Chasen had an illustrious career, spanning multiple decades and earning numerous accolades. She pursued her dream of becoming a publicist and, in doing so, became one of the most elite publicists of her day, perhaps of all time.

According to Patrick Goldstein, Ronni was “Hollywood’s ultimate old-school publicist.” Yet, her career and her life were tragically cut short one November night. Did the BHPD correctly identify the suspect and close the case? Or, as many believe, is the truth about what happened to Ronni Chasen still hidden? The answers are unclear, but we do know that the shocking death of Ronni Chasen will go down as another great Hollywood mystery.

Background

Lorenzen Wright was known for his strength, both on and off the basketball court. He had built a solid career in the NBA, earning respect across the league before returning home to Memphis to be close to his family. But in July 2010, he disappeared after leaving his ex-wife’s home late at night, only to be found six days later shot to death.

What followed was a painful journey marked by a decade-long search for justice.

A Natural Talent

Lorenzen Wright was born on November 4, 1975, in Memphis, Tennessee. From a young age, he was drawn to the basketball court, and it was already part of his life because his father, Herb Wright, had also played basketball professionally overseas and even tried out for the NBA’s Utah Jazz. Because of that, young Lorenzen learned about and developed a love for the sport early.

As a child, Wright was known for being quiet, respectful, and extremely determined. But Wright’s childhood also had its challenges. When he was just seven years old, his father was seriously injured after being shot in the back while working for the Memphis Police Department. The injury left him paralyzed. Even though the situation was difficult, it made Wright more determined.

As he grew older, Wright’s height and athletic ability quickly set him apart. By his teenage years, he was nearly 6 feet 11 inches tall. This made him a powerful presence on the court. He first played high school basketball at Lafayette High School in Oxford, Mississippi, where coaches and scouts began to notice his talent. Later, he moved back to Memphis and finished high school at Booker T. Washington. His reputation as a basketball star continued to grow.

After graduating from high school, Lorenzen decided to stay close to his family and continue his basketball journey at the University of Memphis. In 1994, he joined the Memphis Tigers basketball team, where he quickly became one of the team’s most important players.

Over his two college seasons, Wright scored more than 1,000 points and recorded 31 double-doubles, meaning he reached double digits in two statistical categories in the same game. His strong performances helped the Tigers win more than 20 games in consecutive seasons and reach the NCAA Tournament, including a run to the Sweet Sixteen in 1995.

By the time he finished his sophomore year in 1996, Wright had built a reputation as a hardworking and determined player. Coaches admired his effort and physical strength, while fans loved his determination and loyalty to Memphis. Many experts agreed that he was ready for the next level.

NBA Career and Achievements

In 1996, the dream that Lorenzen Wright had worked toward since childhood finally became reality. After two strong seasons in college basketball, he declared for the 1996 NBA Draft, hoping to turn his lifelong dream of playing professionally into a reality. On draft night, the Los Angeles Clippers selected him with the 7th overall pick in the first round.

Lorenzen made his NBA debut on November 5, 1996, beginning his professional career. He spent his first three seasons from 1996 to 1999 with the Los Angeles Clippers. During those early years, he adjusted to the fast pace and physical style of the NBA. As a young player, he focused on defense, rebounding, and protecting the rim.

By his second season, he was already becoming a reliable player for his team. In the 1997–1998 season, Wright averaged close to 9 points and nearly 9 rebounds per game, showing that he could compete against the league’s top big men. Over the next decade, Wright played for several teams across the league, including his hometown Memphis Grizzlies from 2001 to 2006.

In total, Wright played 13 seasons in the NBA, appearing in 778 games. He had several strong seasons, especially while playing for the Memphis Grizzlies. During his career, Wright averaged about 8 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. While these numbers might not look flashy compared to superstar players, they showed he was a dependable role player who contributed to every team he joined.

By 2009, after more than a decade in professional basketball, Wright’s time in the NBA began to wind down. His final season included short stints with the Sacramento Kings and the Cleveland Cavaliers during the 2008–2009 season. Later that same year, Wright retired from professional basketball.

Life After Basketball

After retirement, Wright returned to Memphis, the city where his basketball journey had begun. He wanted to spend more time with his family and remain connected to the community that had supported him since he was a young player with big dreams.

Wright was the father of seven children, and despite the busy life of an NBA player, those close to him often said that his kids were the most important part of his life. His children were Lorenzen Jr., Loren, twin boys Lamar and Shamar, Sierra, Sofia, and Lawson. The family had experienced heartbreak years earlier. In March 2003, their baby daughter, Sierra Simone Wright, died at just 11 months old from sudden infant death syndrome.

That tragedy deeply affected Wright and his family, leaving them with emotional scars that never fully healed. So after leaving the NBA, he wanted to be more present in his children’s daily lives. He attended their activities, supported their interests, and wanted to make sure they had a stable future.

Separation and Divorce

However, life at home was not always peaceful. Wright’s relationship with his wife, Sherra Wright-Robinson, had become strained over the years. The two had first met when Wright was still a teenager during the time Sherra’s father had coached him in youth basketball. They began dating during his high school years, and they eventually married on June 6, 1998.

But after more than a decade of marriage, the relationship began to fall apart. Friends later said the couple struggled with trust issues and personal conflicts. The couple decided to separate, and their divorce was finalized in February 2010, after 13 years of marriage.

Despite their divorce, Lorenzen and Sherra remained connected because of their children. They tried to keep communication open so they could raise their kids together. In fact, on several occasions after the divorce, Wright was still seen spending time at Sherra’s home in Collierville, Tennessee.

Disappearance

In July 2010, Lorenzen Wright was back in the Memphis area visiting family and spending time with his children. It had only been a few months since his divorce from Sherra earlier that year, and he was trying to adjust to a new chapter in life. On the evening of July 18, Wright visited his ex-wife at her home in Collierville, Tennessee, about 30 miles east of Memphis. According to Sherra Wright-Robinson, he stopped by to see their children and talk for a while before leaving later that night.

Sometime around 10:00 p.m., Lorenzen left the house. Sherra later told investigators that he said he was going to meet someone. A few hours later, at 12:18 a.m. on July 19, a 911 operator in Germantown, Tennessee received a strange call from Wright’s cell phone.

During the call, Wright’s voice could be heard speaking briefly with the dispatcher. According to reports, Wright shouted a curse word as if something terrible had just happened. Suddenly, the sound of multiple gunshots rang out through the phone. The dispatcher heard between nine and eleven shots fired during the call. After the gunfire, the line went completely silent.

Because the system could not confirm the exact location of the call, the incident was not immediately reported to other police departments. This mistake would later become a serious controversy and lead to criticism of the emergency response system.

Wright’s family began to worry. It was unusual for him to disappear without telling someone where he was going. Friends and relatives tried calling his phone, but it went straight to voicemail. Days passed with no sign of the former NBA star. Finally, on July 22, 2010, Lorenzen Wright’s family contacted authorities and filed a missing person report with the Collierville Police Department. Police soon began searching for Wright.

Authorities began attempting to trace his last known movements. Investigators reviewed phone records, spoke with family members, and searched locations where he had last been seen.

The most crucial piece of the investigation concerned the strange 911 call placed from Wright’s cellphone early on July 19, 2010. Investigators eventually confirmed that the call had come from a wooded area outside Memphis. That information helped guide search teams toward the area where they believed Wright might have been. For several days, police searched parts of southeast Memphis, especially woodland and empty fields where the call may have originated.

A Grim Discovery

On July 28, 2010, about ten days after Wright disappeared, searchers made a grim discovery. A city worker discovered a body in a wooded field near Callis Cutoff Road in southeast Memphis, not far from where the 911 call had likely been made. The area was a quiet, undeveloped area of land near a neighborhood called Hickory Hill.

The remains were confirmed to be those of 34-year-old Lorenzen Wright. The tragic news shook the city. For days, people had hoped the former NBA player would be found safe. Instead, the search ended in heartbreak.

An autopsy was performed by the Shelby County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death. The medical examiner found that Wright had been shot at least five times. According to the report, he suffered two gunshot wounds to the head, two to the chest, and one to his right forearm.

Investigators also discovered shell casings from different types of guns at the scene, suggesting that more than one weapon had been used during the attack. Wright’s death was ruled a homicide caused by gunshot wounds.

Investigation

In the days following the discovery of Wright’s body, detectives from the Memphis Police Department began carefully examining the crime scene. Investigators collected evidence, searched the surrounding wooded area, and studied Wright’s phone records. Aside from the shell casings found, the scene provided few clues as to the identity of the killer or killers.

Police believed Wright had been lured to the location before he was shot, but they did not know who had arranged the meeting or why. Detectives began interviewing people who had been close to Wright and those who had seen him during his final hours.

One of the most important interviews was with Wright’s ex-wife, Sherra Wright-Robinson. Sherra told investigators that Wright had left her house late that night with someone in a vehicle she did not recognize. She also said that before leaving, Wright had been talking on the phone about a possible deal involving $110,000, though the details of the conversation were unclear.

Detectives also looked into Wright’s personal life, financial records, and recent activities. They wanted to know if he had conflicts with anyone, business problems, or personal issues that could explain why someone would want to harm him. Despite months of interviews and investigation, no clear suspect emerged.

In 2011, a reward of more than $20,000 was offered for information about Wright’s murder. Crime Stoppers, the state of Tennessee, the city of Memphis, and the Memphis Grizzlies all contributed money towards the reward.

Controversy

One of the most troubling parts of the investigation involved the 911 call made from Wright’s cellphone on the night he disappeared. The police dispatcher had not immediately alerted officers or other departments about the call. Officials said this was because they could not confirm exactly where the call originated or whether it was within their jurisdiction.

The situation caused anger and frustration among Wright’s family, who believed the call should have been treated as an emergency from the start, especially because there were audible gunshots in the background during the call. Many people believed that if this information had been shared sooner, police might have been able to find Wright faster.

The city of Germantown, Tennessee, where the call had been received, later faced criticism and legal action related to the handling of the call. But despite the considerable attention surrounding the case, months turned into years without any arrests.

Breakthrough

Nearly seven years after Lorenzen Wright’s death, investigators uncovered a crucial piece of evidence that completely changed the direction of the case. Earlier in the investigation, a witness had told authorities that the gun used in the killing had been thrown into a lake in Walnut, Mississippi, a small town about 75 miles east of Memphis. For years, that claim had led nowhere, but detectives decided to try once more.

In 2017, an FBI dive team returned to the lake. During the search, divers recovered a 9-millimeter Smith & Wesson pistol. Ballistics testing later matched the gun to shell casings that had been found near Wright’s body in Memphis.

With the weapon linked to the crime scene, detectives in Memphis began reviewing the case again from the beginning. Old witness statements were reexamined, and investigators started connecting new pieces of information with what they already knew.

They also obtained court permission to monitor certain phone calls connected to people involved in the investigation. Slowly, the pieces of the puzzle began to come together. On December 5, 2017, police arrested Billy Ray Turner, a landscaper and church deacon from Collierville, Tennessee. He was charged with first-degree murder in connection with Wright’s death.

A Shocking Revelation

On December 15, 2017, investigators arrested another suspect who was much closer to the victim. That person was Sherra Wright-Robinson, Lorenzen Wright’s former wife. Authorities arrested Wright-Robinson in Riverside, California, and charged her with first-degree murder, conspiracy, and solicitation to commit murder, accusing her of helping plan the murder of her ex-husband.

Sherra Wright-Robinson and Billy Ray Turner had both attended the same Mount Olive Missionary Baptist church in the Collierville area, where Turner served as a deacon. According to prosecutors, the two became close over time. Witnesses later told investigators that the relationship may have been more than just friendship. Some reports suggested they were romantically involved, though Turner denied it.

Another man, Jimmie Martin, was also believed to have been involved in the plot. Martin later cooperated with investigators and helped provide information that led to the discovery of the murder weapon.

Court testimony later described how Wright may have been led to the remote field where he was killed. According to a key witness, Sherra told Lorenzen she needed to meet someone in Memphis to collect money. She allegedly asked him to come with her.

When Wright arrived at the location, he was ambushed by the attackers. Witness testimony suggested he tried to escape by jumping a fence and running across the field. During those terrifying moments, Wright managed to call 911, which captured the sound of gunshots before the line went silent.

It was alleged that money may have been a motive for the crime. Lorenzen had taken out a $1 million life insurance policy before his death. After he died, Sherra received the money because she had been named as the beneficiary. The insurance was supposed to benefit Wright’s children, but reports said the funds had been spent within a few years.

Legal Proceedings and Sentencing

On July 25, 2019, Sherra Wright appeared in a courtroom in Shelby County, Tennessee, and pleaded guilty to facilitation of first-degree murder. By accepting the plea deal, she admitted that she helped plan the events that led to Wright’s death, even though she did not personally carry out the shooting.

The plea agreement helped prosecutors avoid a prolonged trial. It also meant Sherra Wright-Robinson would not face the possibility of a life sentence for first-degree murder. As part of the plea agreement, Sherra Wright-Robinson was sentenced to 30 years in prison. She was denied parole in May 2022 and will next be eligible in May 2027.

Unlike Sherra Wright-Robinson, Billy Ray Turner chose not to plead guilty. Instead, he decided to fight the charges in court. Turner’s trial began in March 2022 in Shelby County. Prosecutors presented evidence collected during the investigation, including witness testimony, phone records, and details about the recovered murder weapon.

One of the key witnesses was Jimmie Martin, a cousin of Sherra Wright-Robinson. Martin testified that he helped Turner dispose of the gun used in the murder by throwing it into a lake in Mississippi. Jurors also heard the 911 call that Lorenzen Wright made during the shooting, where gunshots could be heard before the call suddenly ended.

On March 21, 2022, Billy Ray Turner was found guilty of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and conspiracy to commit murder in connection with Lorenzen Wright’s death. Judge Lee Coffee then sentenced Turner to life in prison.

When the verdict was announced, Wright’s mother, Deborah Marion, expressed relief after waiting more than a decade for justice. Although nothing could bring Lorenzen back, the verdict finally delivered a sense of justice for the beloved Memphis basketball star whose life had ended in such a tragic way.

Impact and Legacy

When news spread that Lorenzen Wright had been found dead on July 28, 2010, thousands of fans, friends, and fellow athletes mourned his death. Memorial services were held across the city, including a large public gathering at the FedExForum, the home arena of the Memphis Grizzlies.

Many remembered how he had organized free youth basketball camps and often gave trophies and gifts to children who attended. Those acts of generosity helped people see him not just as a professional athlete but as someone who truly cared about the next generation.

In an effort to channel their pain into something positive, Lorenzen’s family created the Lorenzen Wright Foundation, an organization dedicated to honoring his life and continuing the kind of work he cared about. The foundation focuses on helping families who are facing difficult times, especially those dealing with loss, financial struggles, or challenges in raising children. It also supports youth programs, giving young people opportunities in sports and education.

These efforts are meant to keep Wright’s memory alive while helping the next generation build better futures. For many people, Wright’s legacy is now tied not only to basketball but also to giving back, supporting others, and staying connected to the community. Through his family, his foundation, and the people who continue to remember him, his legacy endures.

Background

For many people, former Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious became the embodiment of the 1970s punk rock ethos. Chaotic, rebellious, nihilistic, and self-indulgent. His short, turbulent life was marked by volatility, insecurity, and a need to live up to the over-the-top persona he had created.

Everything would change in 1978 on an October night in a New York City hotel room when Sid’s 20-year-old girlfriend, Nancy, was stabbed to death. Though he was charged with the murder, Sid, in his drug-fueled haze, could not remember whether or not he had killed her.

Before he could stand trial, though, Sid would die in a New York apartment from an apparent drug overdose. His death had a major impact on the punk scene in the UK and beyond, and left many questions unanswered.

Early Years

Before he became Sid Vicious, Simon John Ritchie was born on May 10, 1957, in Lewisham, southeast London, to John Ritchie and Anne McDonald. Anne had dropped out of school and joined the British Army, during which time she met John Ritchie, a semi-professional musician who also worked as a guard at Buckingham Palace.

Soon after Simon was born, Anne and her son moved to the Spanish Island of Ibiza, where they were supposed to be joined by John. Ritchie had promised to send her money while she awaited his arrival. However, when neither John nor any money showed up, Anne resorted to selling marijuana and hash to support herself and Simon.

Eventually, Anne and Simon returned to England, where, in 1965, she married Christopher Beverley. Unfortunately, Christopher died just six months after the marriage. Both Anne and Simon continued to use the last name Beverley for the remainder of their lives.

Simon’s formative years were marked by instability, as he and his mother moved frequently, preventing him from putting down roots and establishing a healthy sense of identity.

After Beverley’s death, Anne and Simon moved to Tunbridge Wells, Kent. In 1971, they moved to Stoke Newington in Hackney, East London. By this time, Simon had begun going by John Beverley. During these years, their financial situation was quite precarious, and it has been reported that Anne both sold and abused drugs, and had been able to secure a flat through the government by claiming to be a heroin addict.

By 1973, Anne had become so absorbed by her drug addiction that she was reportedly not even aware that John was attending Kingsway College of Further Education, a school designed for troubled students who had been expelled or had dropped out of school. By many accounts, John was smart, but he had emotional and behavioral problems. He reportedly told one of the school’s counselors that he had thought about killing himself.

That year, when John turned 16, Anne kicked him out of their home. When he told her that he had nowhere to go, she reportedly responded, “I don’t care.”

The Punk Scene

Also in 1973, John met John Lydon, who would soon be known as Johnny Rotten, lead singer of The Sex Pistols. Lydon is also the person who gave John his infamous name “Sid Vicious,” after John was “viciously” bitten by Lydon’s pet hamster, Sid.

Beverley and Lydon, along with their friends John Wardle and John Grey, began hanging out frequently. They became known in the area as “The Four Johns.” The friends frequented the King’s Road area of Chelsea in West London. At the time, the area was a hub for music and fashion culture.

In 1975, Lydon, along with Steve Jones, Glen Matlock, and Paul Cook, formed The Sex Pistols, a band that would become iconic and have a significant influence on the burgeoning punk rock scene.

Sid, who by this point had dropped out of school, would also become involved in the local music scene. In 1976, Vicious co-founded the band The Flowers of Romance. However, the group was short-lived and did not record any music.

Violent Incidents

During this time, Sid was using drugs extensively as well as drinking to excess — often to the point of blacking out. Unsurprisingly, his substance abuse began to change his personality. According to his friend, John Warble, when he first met Sid, he was goofy, sweet, and funny.

However, when he was intoxicated, he was self-destructive, unpredictable, and violent. In June 1976, while attending a Sex Pistols show, Sid attacked fellow musician and music writer Nick Kent with a motorcycle chain, striking him several times on the head. Kent had apparently been blocking his view. Though the incident was reported, Sid was not charged.

In September 1976, Sid attended a performance by the band The Damned. Once again heavily intoxicated, Sid hurled a glass at the band’s lead singer. However, he missed, and the shattered glass severely injured the eye of a young woman in attendance. This time, Sid was arrested and jailed for the incident.

Joining The Sex Pistols

Within the punk scene, Sid became The Sex Pistols’ uber-fan, attending all of their shows while out of his mind on drugs and alcohol. His rowdy behavior was encouraged as it helped the band gain a rebellious and edgy reputation.

Then, in February 1977, Glen Matlock left the band, and Sid was asked to step in and become their bassist. Though many of his contemporaries have described Sid’s musical talent as minimal to non-existent, what he lacked in ability, he more than made up for in look and attitude.

In March of that year, Sid cut the face of a BBC recording engineer with a broken bottle. Though he was not charged, the band was dropped from their record label, and Capital Radio banned all of their songs from its stations.

Due to his lack of playing ability, Sid only appeared on one song for the band’s debut album, and even that had to be overdubbed by bandmate Steve Jones.

Toxic Romance

Soon after joining the Sex Pistols, Sid met Nancy Spungen, a 19-year-old American groupie. The two began a relationship that was described by those around them as extremely volatile. By the time they met, Spungen was a heroin addict with a long history of emotional and behavioral problems. She had been kicked out of public school by the time she was eleven and had been arrested on several occasions.

At 17, she moved to New York City, where she made ends meet by doing sex work before moving to London and becoming a groupie in the punk rock scene. Though she was widely disliked because of her abrasive personality and behavior, she was tolerated by the musicians because she supplied them with drugs and sex.

Although Sid was using a variety of different drugs at this time, it has widely been reported that it was Nancy who first turned him onto heroin. This would only accelerate his downfall, as his music now took a backseat to his drug use. Sid and Nancy spent much of their time together using drugs. Their relationship was tumultuous, with both of them being verbally and physically abusive towards each other.

End of the Sex Pistols

In October 1977, the Sex Pistols’ debut (and only) album, Never Mind the Bullocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols, was released. Despite numerous bans in place for their music, the album debuted at number one on the UK Album Charts and soon went gold.

The band toured in support of the record, and in January 1978, their manager booked them to play a series of shows in the southern United States. This proved to be a culture shock, and there were several incidents, including a show in Dallas, Texas, where Sid was hit in the head with a full can of beer after antagonizing the audience.

There were also internal clashes within the band, and on January 14, 1978, the Sex Pistols played their final show at the Winterlands Ballroom in San Francisco, where Johnny Rotten announced the band’s breakup on stage.

On January 19, Sid took a flight from San Francisco to New York during which he slipped into a drug and alcohol induced coma and was rushed to the hospital. During the spring and summer of 1978, Sid and Nancy traveled to Paris and then England, where Sid met up with former Sex Pistol Glen Matlock.

The two of them, along with two other musicians, played a show at the Electric Ballroom in Camden Town under the name Vicious White Kids. The money he earned for this show allowed him and Nancy to fly back to New York.

October 12, 1978

After returning to New York, the pair had taken up residence in room 100 of the Hotel Chelsea in Manhattan. Late on the night of October 11, into the early morning hours of October 12, they were on a drug binge as they hosted various friends and acquaintances.

Around 2:30 a.m., Nancy asked one of the guests, Michael Morra, a comedian and actor who went by the stagename Rockets Redglare, to buy some more drugs for them. Two of the guests would later state that Nancy was still alive at 5 a.m. A guest in a neighboring room would claim that they heard what sounded like female moaning coming from room 100 around 7:30 a.m.

Around 10 a.m., the hotel’s front desk received a call from Sid saying he needed assistance. When the police arrived soon after, they found him wandering the halls of the hotel. Inside their hotel bathroom was the body of 20-year-old Nancy Spungen. She had suffered a single stab wound to her abdomen from a 5-inch hunting knife and had bled to death on the bathroom floor.

Sid was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. He gave conflicting statements to the police, at first saying he didn’t stab Nancy, then saying he did stab her, but didn’t mean to kill her, and later saying that she must have accidentally fallen on the knife.

Former Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren and Sid’s mother, Anne, retained a lawyer from the firm of famed attorney F. Lee Bailey, with all legal fees being covered by Virgin Records.

Sid was released on bond and returned to the Hotel Chelsea, where he was accompanied by his mother and McLaren. While free on bond awaiting trial, Sid attempted suicide on two separate occasions. He spent a short stint in New York’s Bellvue Hospital before being moved to a behavioral health center in White Plains. He was released from the facility in late November.

Incarceration and Death

Even with a murder charge hanging over his head, Sid could not stay out of trouble. On December 5, he was at the Hurrah nightclub with several friends when he got into an altercation with Todd Smith, the brother of musician Patti Smith.

Allegedly, Sid was harassing a woman, and when Smith intervened, Sid jammed a broken beer bottle into his face. The injury required several stitches, and Sid was arrested and charged with assault. Because the arrest had violated the terms of his bail conditions, he was remanded to the notoriously dangerous Rikers Island jail. To the surprise of many, less than two months after his arrest, his lawyer, Jim Merberg, secured his release on a $10,000 bond, with reduced bail conditions.

On the morning of February 1, 1979, Sid was released from Rikers Island. That night, he and his mother, along with several friends, went to the apartment of his girlfriend, Michelle Robinson, at 63 Bank Street. They had gathered to celebrate Sid’s release from jail.

While Anne Beverley cooked dinner, Sid asked his friend Peter Gravelle to pick up some heroin. When Gravelle returned later that night, Sid injected the drug, and according to those who were there, nearly overdosed. His friends managed to revive him, and several of them left the apartment, shaken by what had happened.

According to Gravelle, another friend gave Sid several Tunial, a barbiturate used to induce sleep. At some point during the night, Sid died from a combination of the heroin and Tunial. He was 21 years old. He may not have understood that because he had not used drugs in almost two months, he was more susceptible to a possible overdose.

However, some, including his mother, believe that he intentionally ended his life, distraught over the death of Nancy and facing the prospect of being convicted of murder. Anne claimed to have found a note in Sid’s jacket saying that he and Nancy had made a “death pact” and that “I have to keep my half of the bargain. Please bury me in my leather jacket, jeans, and motorcycle boots. Goodbye.”

Nancy’s mother, Deborah Spungen, also said that Sid had written a letter to her while he was in the hospital, and that it expressed a similar sentiment. Despite Deborah Spungen’s objections, Anne Beverley and several of Sid’s friends scattered his ashes over Nancy’s graveside in Pennsylvania.

Aftermath and Legacy

With the death of Sid Vicious, the investigation into Nancy Spungen’s death was closed. He had been the primary (and only) suspect. However, had the case proceeded to trial, Sid’s attorney was confident that he would have been able to present a reasonable doubt as to his guilt.

For one thing, Sid was incoherent from drugs and alcohol for most of the night. There were also several people in and out of the room throughout the night, with police finding numerous sets of fingerprints.

There was also a large amount of cash on a table during the party that was missing when the police searched the room. However, it does not necessarily mean that whoever took the money also murdered Nancy, considering that many of the people in the hotel room that night were drug addicts.

It has been speculated that the killer could possibly have been Rockets Redglare. Redglare, who died in 2001, refuted this accusation publicly; however, he allegedly confessed to the crime to several friends privately. Those who knew him, though, said that he had a tendency to make up stories to gain attention.

It has also been theorized that the wound to Nancy could have been self-inflicted, and her drug use that night, combined with her mental health and behavioral issues, may have triggered her to harm herself. The truth of what happened that October night will never be known.

In 2006, the Sex Pistols were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The remaining members declined to attend.

The estate of Sid Vicious continues to generate hundreds of thousands of dollars annually. His life and relationship with Nancy Spungen have been the subject of numerous songs, documentaries, television shows, plays, and more. Even though much of his short life was dark and ugly, for better or worse, he remains an icon for many punk fans to this day.

Background

On June 29, 1978, beloved television icon Bob Crane was found bludgeoned to death in his Scottsdale, Arizona, apartment. Although some close to Crane, including his own family, knew about his secret double life as a sex addict, following his death, his public image suffered after lurid details about his life were released. Nearly 50 years after his brutal murder, the question remains: Who killed Bob Crane?

Early Life and Career

Before his rise to prominence as a television personality, Robert Edward Crane was born on July 13, 1928, in Waterbury, Connecticut. He was the youngest of two sons of Rose Mary and Alfred Thomas Crane. —The family originally spelled their name, Crean.

Robert, or Bob as he preferred to be called, spent his childhood and teenage years in Stamford, Connecticut. By the time he was eleven, Bob’s passion for playing drums had become a big part of his life. In junior high, he organized local drum and bugle parades and later joined the high school orchestra. He graduated from Stamford High School in 1946 and briefly played drums with the Connecticut Symphony Orchestra, but was let go after not taking it seriously enough.

In 1949, Bob married his high school sweetheart, Anne Terzian. The couple had three children: Robert David, Deborah Ann, and Karen Leslie. Not long after, he enlisted in the Connecticut Army National Guard and was honorably discharged in 1950. The same year, Crane entered the world of radio by starting as a janitor at WLEA in Hornell, New York. It wasn’t long until his witty, vibrant personality landed him a job as an on-air personality.

He moved on to WLAD in Connecticut and also hosted for other radio stations. His big break came in 1956 when CBS Radio hired Crane to host a morning show in Los Angeles. Crane quickly became the “King of the Los Angeles Airwaves.” With his program at the top of the ratings, Crane blended his drumming and humor with celebrity interviews such as Marilyn Monroe, Bob Hope, and Frank Sinatra.

This led to an opportunity guest hosting on the Johnny Carson show and appearances on popular TV shows such as The Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and The Dick VanDyke Show. In 1963, he became a regular on The Donna Reed Show, a role that lasted until 1964.

Hogan’s Heroes

Crane’s breakout role came in 1965 when he was offered the starring role in a CBS television sitcom set in a WWII POW camp. To the amazement of many, the show took off despite the somewhat controversial and sensitive nature of the comedy. It was an immediate hit that lasted for six seasons. The show also earned Crane two Emmy Award nominations.

The show catapulted Crane to Hollywood success. It ended his radio career and allowed him to embrace the wealth and fame of Hollywood’s elite crowd. And to engage in his growing passion for cameras, video cameras, and other photographic equipment.

Despite his success on screen, Crane had plenty of problems. He had affairs with two different Hogan’s Heroes co-stars. In 1970, after twenty years of marriage, he divorced his wife, Anne. That same year, he married co-star Patricia Olson (stage name Sigrid Valdis), who played Hilda on the show. The couple had one son, then adopted a daughter. (Though Crane’s son, Robert David, later disputed whether or not Crane was the biological father of the couple’s son.)

Career Decline and Private Life

In 1971, after Hogan’s Heroes was canceled, Crane’s career began a decline. He was offered a few roles in Disney movies and guest spots on popular shows such as Policewoman and The Love Boat. But his sometimes raunchy answers on talk shows led Disney to distance itself from Crane, and his guest-starring roles became few and far between.

By 1973, Crane had abandoned Hollywood altogether to act in dinner theaters. He purchased the rights to a play called Beginner’s Luck and toured across California, Texas, and Arizona. This gave him a steady income and the opportunity to perform live. But it lacked the thrill of his Hollywood days of fame.

Crane had always been fascinated by photography and the emerging hobby of videography. When home video technology emerged in the 1960s, Crane was one of its biggest enthusiasts. However, unlike most people who used it to film normal subjects, Crane had a secret obsession.

Long before his fame on Hogan’s Heroes, Crane had a secret known to those close to him, including his own son, Robert. Crane’s sex addiction and womanizing was an open secret. One of Crane’s favorite activities was photographing or recording his own sexual encounters.

He had his own darkroom and often printed photographs of women, saving the photos in personal albums. Albums he’d share with anyone who wanted to look, even if they refused. Crane’s son, Robert, would later say that all the women his father photographed or recorded knew what was happening and had given consent. This would later prove false, as many of the women had no idea they were being taped.

During the filming of Hogan’s Heroes, Crane’s co-star, Richard Dawson, introduced Crane to a man named John Henry Carpenter. At the time of the meeting, Carpenter was a Sony Electronics sales manager. He had plenty of new equipment to feed Crane’s ‘hobby,’ and the two became fast friends.

Crane loved any type of video equipment, and Carpenter had the newest and best. The two would visit bars, pick up women, often due to Crane’s celebrity status, and would later film their encounters.

Murder

In June 1978, Crane had been performing in Beginner’s Luck at the Windmill Dinner Theater in Scottsdale, Arizona. On the afternoon of June 29th, Crane’s co-star, Victoria Ann Berry, went to Crane’s Winfield Place Apartment. He hadn’t shown up for lunch, and she wanted to know if he was all right.

To Berry’s horror, she discovered Crane’s body lying on a bloody bed. He’d been bludgeoned to death with an unidentified weapon, although police later speculated it was a missing camera tripod. An electrical cord from a camera was tied around his neck, almost like a statement.

The once laughing, vibrant star had been silenced just a few weeks before his 50th birthday. The charismatic, lovable character who had become one of television’s most beloved actors had his sordid private life paraded in front of the world.

On July 5, 1978, Crane’s funeral took place at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Westwood, Los Angeles. Over two hundred family and friends attended, including many of his Hogan’s Heroes co-stars, John and Patty Astin, and Carroll O’Connor. He was buried in Oakwood Memorial Park Cemetery, Chatsworth, California.

Investigation

The investigation into Bob Crane’s death was mishandled from the start. Unfortunately, the Scottsdale police were not equipped to handle such a high-profile murder investigation. In later interviews, Crane’s son, Robert, said that he went to find out what had happened and was allowed access to the apartment. If there were any forensic clues to be found, they were compromised by the number of people who were allowed access to the crime scene.

There was no evidence of forced entry, meaning Crane likely knew and trusted his killer. Nothing had been stolen, except possibly a missing camera tripod, which may have been the murder weapon, as no weapon was ever found.

A pivotal development in the investigation came with the discovery of Crane’s extensive videotape collection. The tapes led them to John Henry Carpenter. Carpenter had made a hurried exit from Scottsdale back to Los Angeles on the day of the murder. He became a prime person of interest when it was discovered that the two had allegedly argued violently the night before.

According to some sources, Crane had been speaking to a pastor who specialized in healing from sexual addiction. Later, Crane’s son, Robert, would say his father had considered Carpenter a leech and wanted to end his relationship with the man. Some speculation was that Crane and Carpenter had argued and, in a fit of rage, Crane was bludgeoned to death.

Carpenter’s rental car was impounded and searched. Blood smears were found, and because of the rare type, they indicated they might match Crane’s blood. However, at the time, DNA testing was not available, and there was no way to definitively determine whose blood it was. The Maricopa County district attorney decided not to file charges. There just wasn’t enough evidence to prove Carpenter was the killer.

Case Reopened

Even though the case went cold, the Scottsdale Police did not forget about it. In 1990, fourteen years after the crime, Scottsdale police investigator Barry Vassall and Maricopa County Attorney’s Office investigator Jim Raines reexamined evidence to attempt to reopen the unsolved case.

While DNA testing was available, it was inconclusive on the blood samples taken from Carpenter’s rental car. Some of the samples had deteriorated, and there were problems with the chain of custody of evidence. But the police found another way to reopen the case. Old photos of the rental car revealed what might be brain tissue in the trunk. An Arizona judge ruled that there was sufficient evidence to reopen the case.

In 1992, John Henry Carpenter was arrested and charged with Crane’s murder. His trial began in 1994. Carpenter’s attorney said the prosecution’s case was circumstantial and inconclusive. There were many people who might be angry enough to kill Crane, jealous husbands or boyfriends of the videotaped women. Or even some of the outraged women themselves.

Carpenter was acquitted and continued to maintain his innocence until his death in 1998.

Aftermath

After Carpenter’s acquittal, Crane’s son, Robert, blamed his father’s death on his wife, Patricia Olson. She inherited Crane’s entire estate, excluding Robert, his siblings, and Crane’s first wife, Anne. Robert later wrote a book, published in 2015, titled Crane: Sex, Celebrity, and My Father’s Unsolved Murder.

However, Maricopa County District Attorney Rick Romley always felt that John Henry Carpenter had been the murderer. He was just unable to prove it. In 2016, with more advanced DNA testing available, the Scottsdale Police would try to prove the case once and for all. They used the last remaining blood samples, which prevented any further use; however, the tests were inconclusive.

To this day, the case remains officially unsolved.

In the decades since his death, the story of Bob Crane’s life and tragic murder continues to generate public interest. Crane’s life and murder were the subject of a 2002 movie titled Auto Focus. It starred Greg Kinnear as Crane and William Dafoe as Carpenter. The movie was loosely based on Robert Graysmith's book, The Murder of Bob Crane.

Background

In March 1976, Franco-American actress and musician Claudine Longet was charged with the shooting death of her boyfriend, Olympic skier Vladimir “Spider” Sabich, at his Aspen, Colorado home. The resulting trial, verdict, and fallout would stun many and cause Longet to shun the limelight in favor of a more private existence.

Early Life

Claudine Georgette Longet was born on January 29, 1942, in Paris, France, during the height of World War II. Her early childhood and formative years were shaped in the shadow of the war, as France, like much of Europe, was only just beginning to recover from the devastation.

As a child, Claudine was known to be shy and soft-spoken, but she showed an early fondness for dance and music. Paris, with its cafés, theaters, and music halls, was a place full of culture and movement, and it was here that Claudine first felt the pull of performance. From a young age, she trained seriously in ballet and other forms of dance, learning discipline, posture, and control.

By her late teens, she had appeared on French television and performed in clubs and small venues, gaining experience and building confidence in front of audiences. At 18, Claudine took a bold step to move to the United States.

She landed in Las Vegas, Nevada, and soon joined the cast of the Folies Bergère show at the Tropicana Resort and Casino. This was a French-style revue full of lights, music, and showgirls. It was very popular with visitors. Claudine was a lead performer, drawing attention with her elegance, slender figure, and stage presence.

Career and Marriage

Around 1960, Claudine had a chance encounter with a man who would have a significant impact on her personal and professional life. According to widely reported accounts, Longet met popular American singer and television star Andy Williams when Williams stopped his car to help Claudine after her vehicle broke down on the roadside.

This chance meeting began a relationship between Williams and Longet. At the time, Andy Williams was already a major star in the United States. Claudine was new to the country, spoke limited English, and lived a life centered on dance and performance. On December 15, 1961, Claudine Longet and Andy Williams married. Williams was 33, and Longet was 19.

The couple went on to have three children: Noelle (born in 1963), Christian (born in 1965), and Robert (born in 1968). Much of Claudine’s early public image was shaped by her family life as she stepped back from her own career ambitions to devote much of her time to being a wife and mother.

In public, Claudine was often seen as the elegant French wife beside one of America’s most beloved entertainers. But it wasn’t long before her natural talent and charm began to pull her back into the spotlight. Andy Williams also played a key role in opening doors for her career as Claudine began appearing regularly on The Andy Williams Show, which premiered in 1962 and quickly became one of the most-watched variety shows on television.

She also made numerous guest appearances on other TV series from 1964 onward, including Combat!, Hogan’s Heroes, Run for Your Life, and The Rat Patrol, where her accent and easy smile made her stand out. Her television exposure soon led to a recording career. In 1966, her performance of the bossa nova song “Meditation” gained attention after it was featured on a television drama. That exposure led music producer Herb Alpert, co-founder of A&M Records, to offer her a recording contract.

Between 1966 and 1970, Claudine recorded five albums for A&M Records. Her first album, titled Claudine (1967), introduced her breathy, soft vocal style to the music world. Songs like “Hello, Hello” and her cover of “Here, There and Everywhere” by The Beatles played on radio stations and brought her broader recognition.

The Look of Love (1967) and Love Is Blue (1968) followed, with the latter album also earning attention on the charts. She recorded more albums like Colours (1968) and Run Wild, Run Free (1970), each showing her gentle, intimate singing that blended pop and bossa nova influences.

In addition to her recording career, Longet also found work in films. In 1968, she had a notable role in the comedy film The Party, directed by Blake Edwards and starring Peter Sellers. In the movie, she played Michèle Monet, a glamorous Hollywood starlet. This, along with other performances on the big and small screen, helped establish her as a multitalented star.

Personal Life

After years in the spotlight as a singer and actress, Claudine Longet’s life began to change both personally and professionally. As her husband’s career continued to grow, so did the pressure on their marriage. Andy was constantly traveling for performances, recordings, and television work.

Claudine was juggling motherhood with her own rising career. While she enjoyed singing and acting, she often put her family first, which sometimes slowed her professional ambitions. Over the years, the distance between them widened.

By 1970, cracks had started to show in Claudine’s marriage to Andy Williams. After nearly ten years together, the couple legally separated that year, even though they tried to stay friends. In January 1975, after nearly 14 years of marriage, Claudine Longet and Andy Williams officially divorced. Despite the breakup, they remained on good terms.

After the divorce, Claudine moved away from Los Angeles and spent more time in Aspen, Colorado. In the years immediately after their separation, Claudine’s public appearances became less frequent. She had stopped performing on television specials, and although her music still occasionally received airplay, she was no longer a regular part of the entertainment scene.

Relationship with Vladimir “Spider” Sabich

In 1972, shortly before her divorce from Williams, Claudine met professional skier Vladimir “Spider” Sabich at a celebrity ski race in Bear Valley, California. Over the next few years, they grew close, and Claudine began spending more time in Aspen, Colorado, splitting her time between Sabich’s chalet in the mountains and her home in Malibu, California.

Sabich and his siblings had learned to ski while growing up near Lake Tahoe in northern California. His talent earned him a scholarship to the University of Colorado Boulder. His college coach also happened to be the coach of the men’s U.S. Ski Team, and Sabich, along with several other University of Colorado skiers, competed in the 1968 Winter Olympics, where he placed fifth in the Men’s slalom.

In addition to his success at the Olympics, Sabich competed on the World Cup circuit for several years before turning pro in 1970. His good looks and charisma helped secure him lucrative endorsements that supplemented his prize winnings. His notoriety helped to popularize skiing in the United States during the late 1960s and early 1970s. He was reportedly the inspiration for Robert Redford’s character in the 1969 film Downhill Racer.

Unfortunately, beginning in 1973, a series of injuries slowed Sabich’s career, forcing him to miss the entire 1975 season. During this time, Claudine Longet was splitting time between her home in Malibu and Sabich’s Aspen chalet in the exclusive Starwood complex, where he was neighbors with singer John Denver.

According to sources, including Sabich’s ex-girlfriend and his friend and former college coach Bob Beattie, shortly before Sabich’s death, he had been planning on ending his relationship with Longet.

March 21, 1976

On the afternoon of March 21, 1976, Spider Sabich returned home after a day on the slopes and a training session at Aspen Highlands. He was preparing to take a shower and then get ready for dinner with a friend. Claudine was also in the house that afternoon.

Things between them had been tense in the months prior, as friends later told reporters that Spider had sometimes said he felt tied down, both by the relationship and by having Claudine’s three children living with them.

At some point, Claudine picked up a .22-caliber Luger-style pistol, a small gun Spider’s father had given him, and brought it into the bathroom. The reason why she had the gun in her hand is something that would later be hotly debated in court.

According to her version of events, she was unfamiliar with guns and believed the weapon was unloaded. She claimed that while Sabich was explaining its safety features and demonstrating how to hold it, the gun suddenly fired, striking Sabich. The bullet hit him in the abdomen, causing severe internal injuries. Claudine said she panicked immediately after the shot was fired and tried to get help.

Longet phoned Aspen Valley Hospital right away to report what had happened. Local sheriffs and first responders arrived at the home and found Spider lying in the master bathroom next to the tub, seriously injured. Medics worked to stabilize him, but the bleeding was too severe. Despite their efforts, Sabich died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital, with Claudine at his side, shortly after 5:00 p.m. that afternoon.

News of his death spread quickly through Aspen. Sabich was a beloved sports figure and widely liked in the community, and many people were stunned that his life had ended in such a sudden and violent way, especially under such murky circumstances.

Investigation

Almost immediately, police began investigating the shooting, trying to understand how and why it happened. Longet was taken into custody for questioning that same day. While she was not arrested on the spot, authorities treated the case seriously from the beginning. Investigators examined the gun, the scene of the shooting, and Claudine’s statements.

When she was taken into custody, Longet allegedly uttered, “I killed him”, while in the presence of a female officer. However, the statement was inadmissible because she did not have an attorney present. She later told police the shooting was an accident; however, there were no eyewitnesses other than Longet and her children in the house.

At first, she was charged with reckless manslaughter, a felony that could have carried up to 10 years in prison and a $30,000 fine. Claudine denied any intention to hurt Sabich and maintained from the start that the shooting was an accidental discharge of the gun. She was released on a $5,000 bond, and surprised many when, six days after the shooting, she showed up to an outdoor memorial for Sabich.

The way police mishandled the early stages of the investigation was crucial to the outcome of the case. Shortly after the shooting, Longet was taken to Aspen Valley Hospital, where medical staff drew a blood sample. That blood test later showed traces of cocaine in her system. However, investigators had not obtained a proper warrant before the test was done. Because of this, the judge later ruled the results inadmissible in court.

The same thing happened with Claudine’s personal diary, which the police seized from the home. Investigators believed it might contain information about her relationship with Sabich, including possible tension or arguments. But again, the diary was taken without a valid warrant, and the judge ordered it excluded from the trial. This was a critical misstep, as those who viewed the diary described its contents as “explosive” and could have served the prosecution well.

Background

On March 1, 2008, a family in the small Texas town of Alba was brutally torn apart when four people were savagely attacked by two teenage killers. Three of them died, while the fourth managed to survive and identify one of the killers to the police. After an investigation, the evidence would point in a shocking and disturbing direction.

An Ordinary Family

Just an ordinary family. That’s how most people might have described the Caffey family of Alba, Texas. Dad, Terry, Mom, Penny, and their three children, sixteen-year-old Erin, and her two younger brothers, Matthew, nicknamed Bubba, thirteen, and eight-year-old Tyler.

The family were devout Christians and attended the Miracle Faith Baptist Church. They lived in the small town of Alba, with a population of just 492, where everyone knew everyone else.

Terry was a youth pastor. Erin was active in youth events and sang in the church choir. Penny played the church piano, while brothers Matthew and Tyler played guitar and harmonica. By all appearances, they were a loving family, with the Caffey’s doing their best to give their children a good life.

Because Erin had been diagnosed with ADD – attention-deficient disorder, the children had been homeschooled for the past three years. However, when Matthew admitted he missed his friends, the children were allowed to return to public school. Erin enrolled at Rains High School, where she quickly made new friends.

Teenage Romance

In 2007, Erin began work at the local Sonic drive-in. Customers adored the bright, cheerful teen, one of the few workers who delivered their orders on roller skates. She also caught the eye of one of the town’s local “bad” boys, eighteen-year-old Charlie Wilkinson. Charlie lived with his father and stepmother, and although many considered him a clean-cut high school senior, his life was often troubled.

Although Terry would later state he felt something “wrong” about Charlie from the start, he did not originally forbid Erin from seeing him. The two quickly formed a romantic relationship behind her parents’ backs. At one point, Charlie gave Erin a promise ring, his grandmother’s engagement ring. When her mother, Penny, saw the ring at a church event, she demanded Erin return it.

Concerned about Erin’s slipping grades and her changing attitude, Terry and Penny Caffey went online to investigate Charlie. They found his MySpace page filled with references to profanity and sex. Not exactly the clean-cut boyfriend they hoped for their daughter. In February 2008, after Erin broke a phone curfew, her parents demanded that she end her relationship with Charlie for good.

Friends would later recall it was then that Erin began to talk about having her parents murdered. She saw it as the only way she and Charlie could be together. At first, no one took her seriously.

March 1, 2008

In the early morning hours of March 1, 2008, Charlie Wilkinson and his friend, Charles Waid, entered the Caffey residence. Erin Caffey and Bobbi Johnson, Waid’s girlfriend, sat outside in the getaway car with full knowledge of what would happen inside. Erin had promised Charlie’s friend, Waid, money if he would help with the killings.

At 3:00 a.m., Terry and Penny woke up to the sound of their bedroom door hitting the dryer in the laundry room. Terry at first thought their son, Tyler, had a nightmare and was running to them for comfort. Suddenly, the quiet night was shattered by gunfire.

Terry was the first to be shot – five times with a .22 pistol. Once in the head, twice in the back, and twice near his right shoulder. His wife, Penny, was then also shot, as Terry lay helpless to save her. When she didn’t die right away, she was stabbed multiple times with a samurai-type sword until she was almost decapitated.

The two gunmen then moved upstairs, where the younger boys were hiding in Erin’s room. Although Charlie had at first protested killing the two younger boys, he later realized that the boys could be witnesses. Erin reportedly said, “Do what you gotta do.”

In the bedroom downstairs, Terry heard his son screaming, “Charlie? Why are you doing this?” Matthew was then shot in the head. Although he couldn’t save his son, Terry made a determined effort to make sure the police knew who had killed his family. Even if he didn’t survive, he vowed to somehow let them know Charlie was the murderer.

Tyler, like his mother, was stabbed repeatedly with the samurai sword by both Wilkson and Waid. Wilkson would later deny he had killed the younger boy, putting all the blame on Waid. The two then set the house on fire to hide any evidence against them, and took the getaway car to Waid’s trailer – just a few miles down the road.

Terry Caffey, who was severely injured, managed to climb out a window of the burning house. He later told police his motivation was to live long enough to identify Wilkinson to make him pay for the murders. It took him over an hour to crawl to a neighbor’s house, bleeding profusely.

Investigation

Charles Dickerson was the only officer on duty that fateful night when the call came into the sheriff’s office. The time was 4:30 a.m. as Dickerson headed toward the Caffey home, where he found the house engulfed in flames. He then went toward the neighbor, Tommy Gaston’s house, where the 911 call had come from.

Terry Caffey lay on the neighbor’s floor, bleeding from his head and upper body. He told the police deputy, “Charlie Wilkinson killed my family.” Soon, two other detectives, sheriff’s investigator Richard Almon and chief deputy Kurt Fisher, arrived. Fisher had just passed Charlie Waid’s trailer on the way to the scene and noticed Wilkinson’s truck parked outside.

It seemed unbelievable to the officers that a boy they knew, Wilkinson, who often fished or went four-wheeling with Fisher’s teenage sons, could be guilty of such a crime.

The detectives went to Waid’s mobile home, and Waid let them inside and gave them permission to search for Charlie. They found him lying on a mattress along with a semiautomatic gun in one of the bedrooms. When they asked him about the murders, he denied it, saying he’d gotten drunk the night before and passed out. Another deputy entered the trailer to gather Charlie's clothes to wear to the jail for questioning. His shirt and boots were spattered with blood.

Fisher obtained a search warrant and went back to the mobile home to collect evidence. In the bedroom, he found Erin Caffey, disoriented and confused, hiding under a bundle of clothes. At first, investigators believed the girl’s story about being kidnapped and taken out of her family’s burning home.

Erin even lied to her maternal grandmother that she had nothing to do with her family’s deaths. When she first saw her father, still alive, she told him the same story. Until it all began to unravel.

When Charlie Wilkinson learned there was a witness who could identify him as the killer, he realized he was caught and had no qualms about telling the police everything. Although he originally wanted Erin to just run away with him, she refused and wanted her family killed. Charlie admitted he loved her so much, he’d do anything she asked.

Erin Caffey stuck to her story, but all three of the others involved in the murders pointed the finger at her for planning the murders. During the investigation, it also came out that a former boyfriend of Erin’s, Michael Washburn, claimed Erin had told him she wanted her family dead a year earlier. She had even hoped he would do it for her.

Convictions and Sentences

All four suspects were charged with three counts of capital murder each. Because Erin was a minor at the time of the killing, the court did not seek the death penalty. However, she was tried as an adult on January 2, 2009, and received two life sentences. She accepted a plea deal, which would make her eligible for parole at 59 years old.

Charlie Wilkinson and Charles Waid accepted plea deals of life sentences with no possibility of parole. Despite facing a possible death sentence, their salvation came from the man who’d lost the most, Terry Caffey. In a letter to the Rains County District Attorney, Robert Vititow, Terry stated, “I want them, in this lifetime, to have a chance for remorse and to come to a place of repentance for what they have done. Killing them will not bring my family back.”

Bobbi Johnson, the driver of the getaway car, was named as an accomplice. She was sentenced to 40 years in prison, with eligibility for parole after serving 20 years.

Aftermath

As of 2025, only Charles Waid has expressed remorse for his part in the crime.

Terry Caffey, who spent years in a suicidal state, was finally able to return to where his home had once been. On that visit, he cried out to God for answers. When he looked up, he saw a piece of paper stuck to a tree. It read, “You’re sovereign. You’re in control.” At that moment, Terry was able to forgive and move forward in life.

Terry was also able to forgive Erin for her part in the crimes, and he visits her in prison every few months. Terry later wrote a book, Terror by Night: The True Story of the Brutal Texas Murder That Destroyed a Family, Restored One Man's Faith, and Shocked a Nation. He has since remarried and now has a blended family. Terry ministers full-time and visits schools and churches.

Erin Caffey granted an interview with Piers Morgan, in which she blamed the events of March 1, 2008, on her “poor choices.”

Background

Just before 11 p.m. on the night of May 19, 1983, the calm, quiet of the McKenzie-Willamette Hospital in Springfield, Oregon, was shattered by the blaring horn coming from the red Nissan parked in front of the hospital’s emergency drop-off. As the doctors and nurses looked out, a blonde woman was frantically waving her arms for help. As hospital staff rushed to assist, the woman exclaimed, “Somebody just shot my kids!”

Inside the blood-spattered car was a horrifying scene. On the front passenger seat lay a little girl, no more than seven or eight, and in the back seat lay another young girl and a toddler. All three children had been shot and were in critical condition. The children’s mother, 27-year-old Diane Downs, had also been shot in her forearm.

As surgeons raced to try and save the children, the hospital’s receptionist was on the phone with the police, assesing them of the situation. Downs would later tell them that as she and the children were on their way back from visiting a friend, she was attacked by a stranger who she described as “white, in his late twenties, about five foot nine, with dark shag-wavy hair, wearing a Levi jacket and an off-colored t-shirt.”

She claimed that he had pulled a gun and demanded her car. When she pretended to throw the car keys, the man pointed the gun inside the car and shot the three children before shooting her in the arm and fleeing.

Due to the heroic efforts of the medical staff, two of the children, 8-year-old Chrisite and 3-year-old Danny, survived. However, Danny was paralyzed from the waist down, and Christie had suffered a stroke. Tragically, 7-year-old Cheryl was pronounced dead.

At the hospital, both police and hospital staff became suspicious of Diane’s calm, almost detached demeanor. They also noticed inconsistencies in her account of events, which seemed to change with each retelling. These suspicions led to an investigation, which would reveal the true depths of Diane Downs’s ultimate betrayal and pure evil.

Diane Downs

Elizabeth Diane Frederickson was born on August 7, 1955, to Willadene and Wes Frederickson in Phoenix, Arizona. She did not have a particularly happy childhood, and spoke negatively about her father, claiming that he was sexually abusive and a strict disciplinarian whose demands kept her mother from giving her attention.

Elizabeth, who, as the years passed, went by her middle name Diane, also claims that her parents’ strict religious views forbade her from wearing makeup or trendy clothes, which caused her to be bullied.

However, according to the book Small Sacrifices by Ann Rule, which details the life and trial of Diane Downs, when she was 14, her father allowed her to enroll in a charm school and she was allowed to dress and wear her hair as she pleased. This change brought newfound attention from many of the boys at Moon View High School, including a teenager named Steve Downs. The two of them began dating and were constantly together.

Marriage

After graduation, they parted ways for a brief time, as Steve joined the Navy and Diane enrolled in the Pacific Coast Baptist College, where she was later expelled for promiscuity. However, the two of them kept in touch and corresponded regularly. When Steve returned home, the pair got married on November 13, 1973.

Later, Diane would claim that she didn’t marry Steve for love, but rather to get away from her family. Though their marriage was neither warm or loving, Diane found a new purpose when she became pregnant with her first child, Christie Ann, who was born in October 1974.

Unfortunately for Diane, things between her and Steve did not change much after the birth of Christie, and by January 1976, Diane had given birth to the couple’s second daughter, Cheryl Lynn. Over the next few years, Diane would leave with the kids on several occasions, but would always return.

By 1978, the family had moved to Mesa, Arizona, and according to the book Small Sacrifices, Diane had become “Hostile but passive, she was both bored and angry.” Diane became pregnant after having an affair with a co-worker, and gave birth to Stephen Daniel in December 1979.

This betrayal, in addition to their frequent fights over finances and other matters, led to Steve and Diane’s eventual divorce in 1980. Steve recalled that towards the end of their marriage, Diane was very cold and distant with her children, often denying them attention or affection.

Obsessed

In 1981, Diane Downs began working for the U.S. Postal Service in Chandler, Arizona. There she met co-worker Robert Knickerbocker. The two embarked on a ‘sleazy affair’ (as he was married), and the pair would meet up in hotel rooms for sexual encounters. Knickerbocker was aware of her pattern of short-term relationships and did not expect the affair to last long.

Instead, Knickerbocker observed that Downs was becoming increasingly obsessed with him, and she began pressuring him to leave his wife for her. He refused. She would also beg him to interact with her children, which he refused, as to him, it was an affair, and it wouldn’t have been right for him to have contact with her children.

Robert eventually broke things off with Diane, who did not take it well. She followed him home, banged on his door, and confronted his wife. She would call their home to harass them, and Robert recalled that when he ended things with Diane, she screamed and ranted at him in a way that he had never seen before.

Not long after their breakup, Downs requested and was given a transfer to Springfield, Oregon, and though she was now in another state, her letters and phone calls to Knickerbocker continued.

May 19, 1983

Diane Downs told detectives that she and her three children had gone to visit the home of one of Donna’s co-workers, Heather Plourd. According to Downs, Heather had expressed interest in buying a horse, and when Downs saw a newspaper advertisement for renting horses, she wanted to show Plourd. Since she didn’t have her phone number, she decided to take a drive to her home.

It was on the way back from Heather’s place - after taking a detour onto rustic Old Mohawk Road - that she allegedly encountered a man standing in the road and waving her down. After Diane exited her vehicle, the man produced a pistol from under his jacket and demanded that she hand over her car keys.

Background

On October 19, 1997, 13-year-old Maryann Measles disappeared from a parking lot in New Milford, Connecticut, while waiting for her mother to finish grocery shopping. The case went cold until nine months later, when, in July 1998, Maryann’s remains were discovered at Lake Lillinonah in Bridgewater, Connecticut, wrapped in a blanket and weighted down with chains.

An investigation would reveal that Maryann had been raped, tortured, assaulted, and drowned before her body was dumped into the Housatonic River, which connects to Lake Lillinonah. It would also be revealed that Maryann was not abducted and murdered by a stranger; instead, she was betrayed by those she considered friends.

Maryann Measles

Maryann Jeanine Measles was born on March 22, 1984, to Martin and Cindi Measles in Sharon, Connecticut. From her first moments, her family loved her deeply. Cindi, her mother, often said that holding Maryann for the first time was a feeling she had never known before.

Maryann grew up in New Milford, Connecticut, with her three younger sisters, Jennifer, Victoria, and Chelsea. They lived in a neighborhood where everyone pretty much knew each other. To her friends and family, Maryann was known for her big laugh and boundless energy.

The Wrong Crowd

By the time she was 13, Maryann was spending a lot of time with a group of older teenagers and young adults. These older friends seemed exciting, and all grown-up, and Maryann wanted to feel like part of the group. Some of the girls in this group were dating older boys who were in their late teens or early 20s. Maryann’s mother, Cindi, began to notice her daughter’s new circle of friends and became increasingly concerned.

By early October 1997, the situation had grown serious. Maryann went to her mother with something heavy on her heart. Tearfully, she told Cindi that two of the older boys in the group, Alan Walter and Keith Foster, had been sexually involved with her. Both were legally adults, one 19 and the other 21, and what had happened to her wasn’t just inappropriate, it was illegal.

Cindi was devastated but took the situation seriously. After talking it through with Maryann, Cindi and Maryann went to the New Milford Police Department to file a statutory rape report. The first official complaint was filed against Walter, and Maryann and her mother planned to return soon to add Foster to the report.

Word spread fast, and the older boys were angry that Maryann was planning to press charges that could get them in legal trouble. A statutory rape charge could mean prison time, registration as a sex offender, and a permanent criminal record for them. The girls in the group were furious too, not just because of the legal risk but because some of their boyfriends were the ones involved with Maryann.

By mid-October, the group had completely turned its back on Maryann. Some members, feeling threatened or betrayed, whispered about her, shot her angry looks, and, in some cases, openly threatened her. This left Maryann isolated among people she once considered friends.

Abduction

On October 19, Maryann was at the New Milford Town Green when three members of her former friend group, Maggie Bennett, Alan Walter, and June Segar, approached her in Bennett’s minivan. They began to yell taunts and threats as the van circled Maryann.

Frightened, Maryann found a payphone and called her mother to come pick her up. Cindi arrived and picked up Maryann. They then drove to the Big Y supermarket in nearby Veterans Plaza to pick up some groceries. Maryann waited in the car while Cindi went inside the store.

The parking lot was busy with shoppers and parents unloading groceries. But while Cindi was inside shopping, one of Maryann’s former friends, 24-year-old Ronald Rajcok, pulled up beside her in his Pontiac Trans Am. Before Maryann could process what was happening, he opened the door and grabbed her. She screamed, begged, and told him to let her go, but none of her words worked. Rajcok forced her into his vehicle.

When Cindi returned to the car, she was surprised to see that Maryann was gone. Confused and worried, she drove home and asked Maryann’s sister if she had seen her come back. When the answer was no, Cindi immediately knew something was wrong. She didn’t wait. She went straight to the police station to report Maryann missing. At first, officers treated the situation like a runaway case, but Cindi insisted that Maryann wouldn’t just leave like that.

Torture and Murder

After Ronald Rajcok shoved Maryann into his Pontiac Trans Am, he drove to a pull-off on River Road in New Milford near the Housatonic River. There, the rest of the group was waiting for them. Including Alan Walter, Keith Foster, Dino Dupas, Dorothy Hallas, Maggie Bennett, June Segar, and Jeffrey Boyette.

They didn’t just shout at her or shove her around. They beat her. They raped her. They struck her again and again, even as she cried, pleaded, and begged for mercy. Some of the men took turns assaulting her while others stood by. One participant later described just how Maryann tried to fight back, only to get her arms twisted as she was lifted against her will.

She was repeatedly raped by Walter, Foster, and Dupas, and beaten and verbally taunted by the girls present. As the attack wound down, some of the men moved Maryann closer to the river’s edge and forced her knees down into the shallow water of the Housatonic River, where Walter Alan held her head under for minutes, drowning her.

When Maryann stopped struggling and her body went still, the group then wrapped her body in a blanket and bound it with heavy chains and a padlock. They attached a cinder block to weigh her down, making sure her body stayed beneath the river’s surface, and dumped her into the Housatonic River.

Search for Maryann

The search for Maryann Measles went on for nine agonizing months. The Measles family plastered hundreds of missing-person flyers all over New Milford, on light poles, store windows, and bulletin boards.

Law enforcement spent about 700 hours searching, conducting more than 80 interviews, and following up on roughly 60 leads in the first weeks and months. Police questioned those who had been close to Maryann, including members of her friend group. Investigators learned that several of those individuals had been near the supermarket around the time she disappeared. But getting clear answers was not easy.

Their stories didn’t line up. Some of them said they hadn’t seen her, while others gave vague or conflicting accounts. However, with Maryann still missing and no physical evidence from the parking lot to indicate what had happened, authorities had little to work with.

A Grim Discovery

On July 15, 1998, nearly nine months after Maryann vanished, her remains were discovered by a boater in Lake Lillinonah in Bridgewater, Connecticut. She had been wrapped in a blanket and weighted down with chains.

She was found near the area where Lake Lillinonah connects with the Housatonic River. Because the remains were so badly deteriorated, Maryann was positively identified through dental records.

An autopsy determined the cause of death to have been asphyxiation, and the death was ruled a homicide by the Litchfield State’s Attorney. In December 1998, a $50,000 reward was offered for information leading to an arrest.

Investigation and Arrests

Despite the discovery of Maryann’s remains, the investigation into her murder remained cold, and in July 2001, four years after she had been found, new detectives were assigned to her case. Based upon new evidence, in October 2002, representatives of the Connecticut State Police announced that arrest warrants had been signed and executed for eight individuals in connection with the murder of Maryann Measles.

Seven were taken into custody in Connecticut, and Jeffrey Boynette, who was living in Texas, was arrested there and extradited to Connecticut to face charges. Law enforcement had spent years gathering statements and evidence, and now prosecutors started talks with many of the people in custody about how their cases would move forward. Some agreed to plea agreements, meaning they admitted their involvement and accepted a set sentence, while others chose to go to trial and let a judge and jury decide their fate.

Legal Proceedings

The first significant step came in February 2004, when Alan “A.J.” Walter, seen by prosecutors as one of the group’s central figures, agreed to a plea deal. As part of this deal, Walter pleaded guilty to felony murder, first-degree kidnapping, conspiracy to commit first-degree kidnapping, conspiracy to commit first-degree sexual assault, and tampering with physical evidence, and by doing so, he avoided the possibility of the death penalty.

Instead, he was sentenced to life in prison. Prosecutors said this deal helped build the cases against the others, making it easier to pursue justice without years of legal delay. Over the next few months, more individuals accepted agreements that resolved their cases without full trials.

Jeffrey Boyette entered a plea in June 2004. He pleaded no contest to felony murder, first-degree sexual assault, first-degree kidnapping, and risk of injury to a minor. This meant that he did not admit guilt but accepted that sufficient evidence existed for a conviction, and he was later sentenced to a 50‑year term, with half of that time suspended and a portion of the sentence served on probation afterward.

In September 2004, Dorothy Hallas pleaded guilty to felony murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree kidnapping, and risk of injury to a minor. She was sentenced to 25 years with 5 years of probation. Maggie Bennett was charged with first-degree kidnapping, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, risk of injury to a minor, tampering with a witness, and tampering with evidence. Because of her cooperation, she was sentenced to 19 years in prison.

In accordance with her plea agreement, June Segar pleaded guilty to felony murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree kidnapping, and tampering with a witness. She was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Like Alan Walter, Deaneric “Dino” Dupas was also charged with capital murder, and like Walter, Dupas also accepted a plea deal to avoid a possible death sentence. He pleaded guilty to felony murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree kidnapping, and conspiracy to commit first-degree sexual assault. He received a 47-year sentence.

Ronald Rajcok, the man who had abducted Maryann, was also given a plea deal in which he pleaded guilty to felony murder, first-degree kidnapping, conspiracy to commit first-degree kidnapping, risk of injury to a minor, and tampering with a witness. In exchange, he was sentenced to 36 years in prison.

Not everyone agreed to a plea. Keith Foster refused an offer and instead opted for a trial. During his 2006 trial, Foster claimed that he had not been present at the time of the murder. After hearing the evidence, the jury found him guilty on all counts. The judge sentenced him to 110 years in prison, by far the longest sentence in the case. Even after that conviction, Foster continued to challenge the court’s decisions, but in August 2009, the Connecticut Supreme Court rejected his appeal and upheld the conviction.

Aftermath

Decades after Maryann Measles’ death, her family and members of the community continued to honor her memory. On October 19, 2023, which marked the 26th year since Maryann’s disappearance, her family organized a candlelight memorial on the Town Green in New Milford to honor her memory. Attendees lit candles, wore ribbons with her name, and shared memories of her smile and laugh, reminding the town that even years later, her absence was deeply felt.

In recent years, the story has also found its way into modern media beyond news reports. An episode of the series “Mean Girl Murders” aired in 2023, retelling Maryann’s story for a new generation. Also, in 2025, an episode of a documentary series on the Investigative Discovery channel featured Maryann’s case, bringing attention to the events and those involved.

These programs offered more context and interviews with people who lived through it, helping viewers understand not just what happened, but why it mattered so deeply to the community.

A Georgia farm girl with a difficult upbringing who dreamed of fashion, fame, and fortune would eventually have everything she desired and more, thanks to her marriage to a wealthy businessman. She would come to be known as one of Houston’s most elite socialites and philanthropists.

After making a name for herself, she took in her troubled nephew at her sister's request. Rumors and scandal began to swirl, though she did her best to contain them. Then, one early morning in June 1964, she discovered her husband brutally murdered in a luxury Florida apartment.

Candace “Candy” Mossler and her nephew, Melvin Powers, would find themselves on trial for murder and fighting for their lives. It was one of the most high-profile trials of its day, and the results left many in the public stunned.

Humble Beginnings

Candace Weatherby was born in Buchanan, Georgia, in 1920, and was the sixth of twelve children. Her father was a farmer, and the family did not have much money. Candace and her siblings spent their days doing farm chores, but according to those who knew Candace, she loved to dress up and pretend she was a princess.

She was a beautiful young girl with a vivid imagination, and even the monotony of a rural farm life didn’t stop her from dreaming of a life of luxury.

Tragically, when Candace was twelve, she lost her mother due to complications from the birth of what would have been the family’s 13th child. After this, her father abused alcohol to cope with his grief. Eventually, the liquor could no longer drown his sorrows, and he skipped town, leaving his children behind. Candace and her younger siblings were left with relatives to care for them, having lost their mother and been abandoned by their father.

In her late teens, Candace’s grandfather encouraged her to find a husband who could care for her and provide her with the kind of life she’d always dreamed of. Eventually, Candace was introduced to a civil engineer named Norman Johnson, whom she married in 1939 at the age of nineteen.

One year later, Candace and Norman had a son, whom they named Norman Jr. It wasn’t long before Candace realized this wasn’t the life she was looking for. She began volunteering as a hostess for a military support group, helping host parties for soldiers at Fort Benning.

There, she met Winthrop Rockefeller, son of John D. Rockefeller. Though the exact nature of their relationship is unclear, when Candace had her second child, Rita, in 1943, she gave her the middle name Rockefeller.

Climbing the Social Ladder

A few years later, Candace and her two children relocated to New Orleans after Norman accepted an engineering position with a local shipyard. Shortly after, their marriage reached a breaking point. While Norman moved out west, Candace stayed in New Orleans with the children.

Now free from the marriage she may have felt was holding her back, Candace began to explore her passions for fashion and modeling. She was determined to launch her own career, and after attending Barbizon School of Modeling in New York City, she opened the Candace Modeling and Self-Improvement School.

Candace, who came to be known as Candy, advertised her school and hosted seminars to draw in new students. She had become an entrepreneur in her own right, but rumors of some less desirable engagements began to swirl. It is said that Candy sometimes worked as an escort and may have also hosted “dance classes” for young soldiers that involved far more than dancing.

Despite the unsavory allegations, Candy continued to immerse herself in the local culture and arts scene, eventually landing a volunteer position with the New Orleans Opera. The executives accepted Candy’s offer to meet with and charm wealthy businessmen to obtain financial support for the Opera.

Marriage to Jacques Mossler

One of these wealthy businessmen was named Jacques Mossler, a Romanian immigrant who had amassed a small fortune through a variety of business ventures, some potentially less honest than others. Mossler had recently divorced from his wife of 30 years. In 1947, Candy, then 27, visited Mossler, then 52, at his office.

Though Candy was unsuccessful in soliciting donations for the Opera, which Mossler said bored him, she was quite successful in soliciting Mossler’s attention. Two years later, Candy and Jacques were married during a trip to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Upon their return to New Orleans, they began packing for a big move: the newlyweds were heading to Houston.

Jacques purchased three acres in River Oaks, an affluent suburb on the west side of Houston. Jacques built a three-story mansion, complete with a full staff, a seven-car garage, and even a personal maid to cater to Candy’s every need. Candy, who, as a child, had dreamed of being a princess, would finally have her castle.

With the husband and the home to match the status she so desired, Candy quickly began climbing the city’s social rankings. She became known for her philanthropic efforts, giving money to charitable causes and hosting legendary fundraisers at her lavish mansion.

Eventually, whispers from Candy’s past life made their way to her new city. Rumors abounded about Candy’s past as a French Quarter call girl, but even the scandalous truth of her past couldn’t stop her rise to local prominence. Candy had donated $15,000 to the Houston Boys Club, among many other philanthropic causes.

In 1957, Candy and Jacques flew to Chicago to adopt four siblings who were tragically orphaned when their father murdered their mother and their infant brother. The story of the Mosslers’ compassion and generosity made national news, and when they returned to Houston, photographers gathered to catch a glimpse of the socialite couple and their newly adopted children.

Candy transformed the family’s ballroom into a playroom for the kids, and she and Jacques built a baseball field on an adjacent lot so the children could learn to play sports. By the end of the 1950s, Candy seemed to have it all- the husband, the home, the family, and the fame. Then, in 1961, a phone call from her older sister would change everything.

Trouble Brewing

Elizabeth Powers, Candy’s older sister, called Candy desperate for help. Her 20-year-old son, Melvin “Mel” Powers, had found himself in jail after being convicted of fraud. Elizabeth was hoping that Mel could come stay with the Mosslers in Houston until he could get back on his feet. Candy agreed, and once Mel was out of jail, he came to Houston and was given his own room in the mansion and a luxury car to use.

Candy asked Jacques to give Mel a job, and Jacques obliged. Mel began working as a repossessor for one of Jacques’ loan companies. Things were well until 1963, when something happened that led Jacques to fire Mel, have security escort him off the property, and forbid him from ever returning. After that, Jacques left Houston and moved into a high-end apartment in Key Biscayne, Florida.

Candy, the master of managing public opinion, claimed that Jacques kicked Mel out in a brief fit of anger after Mel announced he was quitting his job to pursue his own business ventures, and that Jacques was merely in Florida on business. Candy told anyone who asked that Jacques was opening a bank in the Miami area and that their marriage was perfectly fine.

Less than a year later, in June of 1964, Candy and the children made their way to Florida. They enjoyed spending their days on the beach, and in the evenings, Candy frequently took the children along for her visits to the hospital, where she received injections to treat her recurring migraines. These were often late-night trips, but the children said they didn’t mind. They were always together, and the children enjoyed going for drives in Candy’s red Pontiac convertible.

Murder Mystery

On June 29th, 1964, Candy took the kids along as she made another trip to the hospital. Along the way, she stopped to mail some letters from a local hotel, then stopped again to get dinner for the children. When they finally made it to the hospital, it was nearly midnight.

It took several hours for Candy to be seen, but she eventually got her injections. It was after 4 a.m. when she took the children back to Jacques’s apartment. This late-night excursion would become a night the family would never forget.

Background

From an early age, Michael Stone seemed destined for prison. After an abusive and tumultuous childhood, Stone dropped out of school and drifted into a life of drug addiction and petty crime. As his addiction worsened, his crimes became more violent and his mental health deteriorated.

Stone himself would admit that he was unable to control his violent temper, and over the years, his drug-fueled crimes and fits of rage landed him in prison numerous times throughout his life.

He has also been a suspect in several unsolved homicides, yet it was the crime for which he is currently serving life in prison, the savage attack of a mother and her two daughters in 1996, that is perhaps the most controversial.

A Troubled Start

Michael Stone was born Michael John Goodban in the town of Royal Tunbridge Wells in Kent on June 7, 1960. From the start, his life lacked stability. Both Ivor Goodban, his registered father, and Peter Stone, whose last name he would adopt, denied that he was their son.

His early life was marred by abuse and domestic violence, and when he was about eight years old, his mother, Jean, sent him to a children’s care home in Canterbury, near the village of Chillenden, Kent.

These early experiences made Stone a troubled and disruptive child, and as a result, he was frequently moved to different homes. His angry and aggressive outbursts would continue and only get worse as he got older.

Stone would frequently run away and hitchhike, though he would usually return to the care home. At a young age, he looked up to and hung around with older boys and began using drugs. It was also around this time that he began having regular interactions with the police, a pattern that would continue throughout his life.

Around age 16, Stone left the care system and also dropped out of school. With little education and a growing heroin addiction, Stone entered into a life of crime.

A Life of Crime

To support his drug habit, Stone turned to burglary and theft, often breaking into sheds and stealing lawnmowers and other tools that he could sell. As his addiction worsened, he resorted to increasingly violent crimes, including muggings and armed robberies. During the 1980s and early 1990s, Stone served time in prison for assaulting a man with a hammer during a robbery, stabbing a man, attacking a police officer, and committing two armed robberies.

He was also arrested for assaulting a former girlfriend, but the charges were later dropped when she refused to testify. He was also a suspect in the murder of a man named Francis Jegou, who had been robbed and stabbed to death in Maidstone in 1976. Stone was 16 at the time, and the murder occurred close to where he was staying. He is alleged to have later admitted his guilt to a psychiatrist.

Stone was questioned about the crime, but never charged due to a lack of evidence. Though Stone’s sister, Barbara, believes that he is innocent of the murders for which he is currently locked up, she did say that she believed he was responsible for the murder of Jegou, and that he came to her shortly after the killing and asked her to hide a knife. He was also suspected of intentionally pushing a friend who had fallen under a London train as he stood next to Stone.

In addition to his criminality, Stone had a documented history of severe mental illness. He had been committed to a psychiatric hospital where he was diagnosed with a psychopathic disorder. He was also reportedly banned from most of the pubs around Medway for fighting and disorderly behavior.

Murders of Lin and Megan Russell

At around 4 p.m. on the afternoon of July 9, 1996, 45-year-old Lin Russell arrived at Goodnestone Primary School in Chillenden, Kent, to pick up her two daughters, six-year-old Megan and nine-year-old Josie, from a swimming gala. Lin, Megan, and Josie, along with their family dog, Lucy, then began their walk home through the countryside.

Approximately twenty minutes later, they passed a beige parked car on Cherry Garden Lane. A man then got out of the car, brandishing a hammer and demanding money. Lin told the man that she didn’t have any money with her, but said she could go home and get some.

The man then struck Lin with the hammer. Lin screamed for Josie to run, and as she attempted to flee, the attacker chased her down and dragged her back to the small copse by the footpath. He then bound and blindfolded all three of them with strips from the girls’ swimming towels and bludgeoned them all with the hammer in a frenzied attack.

Lin, Megan, and Lucy were all killed in the attack, while Josie was left with severe injuries. Lin’s husband, Shaun, arrived home that afternoon, and as the hours passed with no word from his wife or daughters, he grew increasingly worried. At around 9 p.m. that night, Shaun called the police. A search team with dogs combed the area and discovered the bodies around midnight. Josie, who was clinging to life, was rushed to the hospital.

Investigation

After Shaun was told the horrible news, he was able to visit Josie in the hospital before being interviewed by the police and quickly cleared of any involvement. Three days after the murders, on July 12, a bag containing the towel strips was found in some hedges near the crime scene.

In late August, Josie was discharged after spending more than six weeks in the hospital. In March 1997, details of the crime were made public in an attempt to solicit information from the public. Multiple witnesses reported seeing a beige car driven by a white man near the scene of the killings. Josie Russell’s description of the attacker was a white man in his 20s, about 5ft 11’ with spikey blonde or brown hair.

In July 1997, the story was featured on the British television series Crimewatch. The day after the broadcast, police received a call from a psychiatrist who told them that the e-fit composite resembled one of his patients, Michael Stone.

When the police talked to the caller and other medical personnel who treated Stone, they were told of Stone’s violent and aggressive threats and fantasies, which included murdering his probation officer, killing people and their families, and killing children.

Arrest and Trial

Stone was arrested in July and held until his trial in October 1998. He was charged with the murders of Lin and Megan Russell. From the beginning, the case against him was entirely circumstantial. There was no forensic evidence or witnesses that linked him to the crime.

The killer had left a bloody fingerprint on Josie’s lunchbox, and several hairs were also found that did not belong to the victims. A black bootlace that was smeared with blood was also left at the scene. This evidence, as well as the bloodstained towel strips recovered near the scene, was tested using the techniques available at the time, and no links to Stone were found.

On the first day of Stone’s trial, the prosecutor for the Maidstone Crown Court told the jury: “I will tell you straight away there is no scientific evidence to link Stone to the scene.” The prosecution argued that the bootlace found at the scene was the type of item an addict would use to inject heroin. It was argued that Stone’s drug addiction was the motive for the attempted robbery and subsequent murders.

The prosecution’s case hinged on the testimony of Damien Daley, an inmate who was locked up with Stone while awaiting trial. Daley testified that Stone confessed to him about the murders, a claim which Stone vehemently denied. Daley’s charges of arson and grievous bodily harm were dropped in exchange for his cooperation.

Two other witnesses, Mark Jennings and Barry Thompson, both convicted criminals, also testified that Stone confessed to them about the murders while they were locked up. A fourth witness, Sheree Batt, testified that she had seen Stone wearing bloodstained clothes on the day of the murders. Stone, who was a habitual drug user, was unable to produce an alibi or account for his whereabouts that day.

On October 23, 1998, after more than 15 hours of deliberation over two days, Michael Stone was found guilty of the murders of Lin and Megan Russell and the attempted murder of Josie Russell.

Appeal and Second Trial

Stone’s conviction was quashed when it was learned that one of the witnesses, Barry Thompson, admitted to lying on the witness stand. It also came out that another witness, Mark Jennings, had been paid £5,000 by The Sun newspaper before he had given evidence. Damien Daley admitted to lying about his drug use while on the stand, but maintained that Stone had confessed to him.

Also, Jean Batt, the mother of Sheree Batt accussed her daughter of lying to the jury and that the day she saw Stone with the bloody clothes was actually July 26, and not July 9, the day of the murders.

Following these revelations, a retrial was ordered in 2001, during which Stone was once again found guilty and given three life sentences with a tariff of 25 years.

Lingering Doubt

Since his arrest, Michael Stone has consistently maintained his innocence. According to his sister, he has been approached by the parole board; however, he is unwilling to consider it because he views accepting parole as an admission of guilt.

Stone’s attorney, Mark McDonald, appealed the conviction again in 2005 on the basis that Daley’s testimony was unreliable and self-serving. This appeal was rejected. It has been noted that neither Daley, Jennings, or Thompson offered any details during their testimonies that were not already available in the newspapers.

The witnesses also described a beige car, which Stone did not own. And though he did bear some resemblance to the e-fit composite, he was considerably older and shorter than the man described by Josie Russell.

There has also been speculation that the murders were committed by convicted serial killer Levi Bellfield. Bellfield, who is serving life in prison for murder, confessed to the Russell murders in 2022 but later retracted his confession. Police believe that Bellfield is either lying in order to play mind games or was offered some sort of payment.

Over the years, Stone’s legal team has continually petitioned the Criminal Cases Review Commission to refer his case to the Court of Appeal. Thus far, they have been unsuccessful. However, according to a January 2026 article from the BBC, the CCRC is currently reviewing an application.

A spokesperson said, “It would be inappropriate for us to discuss the case or make any further comment while the application is being reviewed.”

Closing Thoughts

It is important not to lose sight of the fact that the true victims in the case are the members of the Russell family. Shaun, who lost his wife and daughter, and Josie, who lost her mother and sister and nearly her own life, are left with the trauma and memories of that horrible day nearly 30 years ago.

Whether he is guilty or not, it was Michael Stone’s lifestyle of drug use and violent criminality that put him in a situation where his fate rested in the hands of other convicted criminals.

Yet one chilling question remains: if Michael Stone didn’t kill Lin and Megan Russell, who did?

In 1907, an artist named Robert Wood was on trial for the brutal murder of Emily Dimmock, a 22-year-old part-time prostitute. The killing, which had occurred at 29 St. Paul’s Road in the Camden Town section of London, became known as the “Camden Town Murder.”

The murder and the sordid details surrounding it gripped the public and press, who carefully followed the details of the trial. The trial became notable for several controversial moments, including a biased outburst from the presiding judge and Robert Wood taking the stand in his own defense. Though he was ultimately acquitted, the question remains: Did a killer walk free?

Emily Dimmock

Emily Elizabeth Dimmock was born in the Hertfordshire Village of Standon on October 20, 1884. Her father, William, ran the Red Lion pub, where Emily spent much of her childhood.

By age twenty-one, she had moved to 1 Bidborough Street, near the bustling railway stations of Kings Cross and St. Pancras. The house’s owner, John William Crabtree, would later be arrested for running a brothel, hinting at the shadowy world Emily inhabited.

In 1906, Emily, who also went by Phyllis, met nineteen-year-old Bertram Shaw. What began as a part-time relationship soon blossomed into romance, and Bert became her common-law husband. The couple settled at 29 St. Paul’s Road in Camden Town. They presented themselves to the landlady as Mr. and Mrs. Shaw. Bert worked on the Midland Railway as a chef on the Sheffield Express, a train that ran between St. Pancras and Sheffield.

Every night, Shaw left home about 4:15 p.m. and returned to London at 11:30 a.m. the following morning. While Shaw was away working nights, Emily sought customers and companionship in local pubs like the Rising Sun.

The Rising Sun

Emily’s search for companionship after hours often led her to the bustling Camden Town pub, the Rising Sun. While Bert worked overnight, Emily would bring other men home, seeking comfort and excitement in London’s nightlife.

Just days before her death, she met Robert Percival Roberts, a sailor whose company she enjoyed so much that he stayed with her for two more nights. On September 11th, the day of the murder, Roberts begged to be allowed to stay again, but Emily refused, telling him she was expecting another visitor that night.

To prove her point, Emily produced a note to show Roberts: “Will you meet me at the Eagle, Camden Town, 8:30 tonight, Wednesday.” It was signed “Bert,” adding another layer of mystery to Emily’s evening plans. Although Roberts had a solid alibi and was quickly cleared by investigators, he did provide a crucial clue. He remembered the note and a mysterious letter that Emily received that morning before he left. After reading it, she burnt it in her fireplace, leaving the contents a mystery.

Just days before her meeting with Roberts, on September 6th, Emily met another man named Robert Wood at the Eagle pub on Royal College Street. This seemingly minor encounter would soon become central to the investigation as Wood’s connection to Emily and the events leading to her murder drew the attention of both the public and the police.

On September 11th, Roberts went to the Rising Sun pub, hoping to see Emily again. He met a friend named Franck Clark, and the two shared a pint while waiting. Emily never appeared. Instead, a few miles away, Emily was seen in the Eagle in the company of Robert Wood.

It was the last time anyone would see her alive.

Murder Mystery

On September 12th, 1907, Bert’s mother, Mrs. Shaw, arrived for a prearranged visit with Emily. She had disapproved of their union, and Bert wanted her to get to know Emily better. Mrs. Shaw knocked at the couple’s door but received no answer. She then waited with the landlady until Bert returned home from work.

When Bert Shaw finally arrived home, he found his room locked, a detail that immediately struck him as odd. He had to borrow a key from the landlady, Mrs. Stocks. With the borrowed key in hand, the trio stepped inside, only to be greeted by chaos; rooms ransacked, the unmistakable evidence of bloody hands washed in the basin, and a chilling quiet that seemed to echo through the house.

In the bedroom, Bert found a horrific scene. Emily lay nude, her throat cut so savagely that it nearly severed her head. The peaceful expression on her face, even in death, suggested she’d been murdered as she slept, unaware of the danger.

Investigation

Inspector Arthur Neal of Scotland Yard headed the investigation, but the scene offered few clues. The murderer had left little evidence behind. Emily’s stomach contents showed she’d died sometime between 3 and 6 a.m. on the morning of September 12th.

The remains of a dinner for two were found on a table in the parlor, leading inspectors to guess Emily’s last meal had been eaten with her killer. The murder weapon was never found.

Only a few valuables were taken from the rooms, including Bert’s cigarette case and watch, and Emily’s purse and ring. Most noticeable, though, was the destruction of Emily’s cherished postcard collection. Many of the postcards had been torn out, leading the Inspector to guess they concealed secrets to the killer’s identity.

When Bert cleaned out the rooms after Emily’s funeral, he discovered a postcard signed, “Alice.” He dutifully gave it to the police, thinking it might have something to do with the murder. Inspector Neil enlisted several local newspapers to publish the postcard. He hoped to find someone who might recognize the handwriting.

The postcard read: Phillis darling. If it pleases you to meet me at 8.15 at the (and here instead of words, he drew an artist’s impression of a rising sun). Yours to a cinder.’ On September 29th, the News of the World offered a £100 reward to anyone who provided information about the mysterious Alice.

The breakthrough came when Ruby Young, a former lover of Robert Wood, recognized his handwriting on the postcard. When confronted, Wood realized the danger he faced, knowing he was among the last to see Emily alive at the Eagle pub. He begged Ruby not to tell anyone she recognized the handwriting, and if the truth came out somehow, he told her to tell the police they met regularly every Monday and Wednesday. That would give him an alibi for the night of Emily’s murder.

At first, Ruby agreed, but she eventually shared the information with a friend. This friend happened to have another friend who worked in Fleet Street, the heart of British journalism and publishing. Ruby’s friend told a journalist who contacted Ruby. In exchange for the promised reward, Ruby offered to tell him everything. Knowing what an important clue the “Alice” postcard might be, the journalist invited along a witness to the conversation, Inspector Arthur Neil.

It was the first real break in the case. Neil believed Robert Wood was the murderer of Emily Dimmock. He was arrested on October 4th. Although Wood admitted meeting Emily and writing the postcard, the case against him was based largely on circumstantial evidence. His movements on the night of the murder were inconclusive. After meeting Emily at the Eagle, no one could vouch for his whereabouts.

Trial of Robert Wood

Robert Wood’s trial took place in December at the Old Bailey, the Central Criminal Court. It was the prominent criminal court in London, known for many notable trials. The seats were filled with the luminaries of the day, the well-known actors, writers, and artists. Many had reserved seats for the “spectacle.” The general public filled the streets outside, treating the trial as the best entertainment of the year.

Many people, including Wood’s employers, believed he was innocent, and they put up £1000 for his defense, obtaining the services of famed English barrister Sir Edward Marshall Hall. Known as “The Great Defender,” Hall had represented defendants in some of the era’s most notable and high-profile cases.

Hall became convinced of Wood’s innocence and the fallibility of the prosecution’s case. He used dramatic and effective cross-examination, a trademark of his legal defense. In a risky and controversial move, Wood himself took the stand in his own defense. This did not seem to help him much, as he came off to some as insincere and rather unbothered about being accused of a brutal murder.

Many witnesses said Wood showed little interest in the trial. He sat silently, sketching people in the courtroom, including the judge and witnesses, almost as if he were merely a spectator. Despite his client’s strange behaviour, Marshall Hall used his skills to undermine the credibility of the prosecution’s witnesses and create a reasonable doubt in the minds of the jurors.

The Judge, Mr. Justice Grantham, was expected to take a pro-conviction stance at the trial. However, to the shock of many, about halfway through the summing up, he made it clear to the jury that they should acquit Wood. The jury dutifully retired and, after fifteen minutes, returned with a verdict of “not guilty.”

Though some were pleased with the verdict, believing that an innocent man had been rightly vindicated, others saw a grave injustice.

Other Suspects

Some alternative suspects have been suggested over the years, including Walter Sickert, a German-born British artist and painter who, in 1908, the year after the murder, sketched a series of four paintings called “The Camden Town Murder.”

Sickert lived in Camden at the time of the killing; however, there was no evidence that he ever knew or crossed paths with Emily Dimmock, nor was he ever interviewed or questioned during the investigation or trial.

Another mysterious character named “Scotch Bob” was named as an early suspect after it was alleged that he had threatened to cut Emily’s throat. However, he was never identified or located.

Aftermath

After the trial and his acquittal, Robert Wood lived a quiet, law-abiding life until his death in 1966. Many in his own family didn’t even know about the trial until they discovered it in history books. Bert Shaw vanished from the pages of history. His sole claim to fame was the discovery of Emily’s body.

After his successful defense, Sir Edward Marshal Hall later told his daughter he had come to believe Wood murdered Emily. No one knew what or why he changed his mind. Inspector Neil was quoted as saying, “Although we must abide by the Jury’s decision, there is no moral doubt that Wood was guilty of the murder.”

Nearly 120 years after Emily Dimmock’s gruesome murder, her death remains unsolved.

Background

On September 19th, 1952, the growing community of Brisbane was rocked by the violent murder of a young woman. The area was safe with virtually no violent crime to speak of, but this night would change that- later, it would come to be known as the night that Brisbane lost its innocence.

The resulting investigation became the largest in Queensland’s history. Yet after countless hours spent searching for the killer, the case remained unsolved, as it does to this day. This is the story of Betty Shanks and Australia’s oldest cold case.

Betty Shanks

Betty Shanks was a 22-year-old woman and a resident of the Brisbane suburb of Grange in Queensland, Australia. She had grown up in the quiet town with her parents and continued to live with them after graduating from the University of Queensland.

Betty began her career in public service after graduating, working for the Commonwealth’s Department of the Interior. She was described as exceptionally bright and beautiful, and she had grown into a confident young woman.

Grange was known for being a safe neighborhood with no violent crime, and as such, Betty and other young women did not fear walking alone at night.

September 19, 1952

On September 19th, 1952, Betty attended a night lecture at Brisbane’s Commercial High School, which was eight kilometers away from her parents’ home. Betty, along with two other students, caught a ride back from their lecturer, Edward Milliken. He took Betty to Tram Stop 19 in Windsor, and from there, Betty boarded a tramcar that would take her directly to her neighborhood.

Betty exited from the tram terminal at Grange at 9:32 p.m. and began the short walk home down Thomas Street. Her parents lived on Montpelier Street, only four blocks from the tramcar terminal. Tragically, Betty would only make it a block or so from the terminal before she was attacked.

Around 9:40 p.m., residents in the neighborhood reported hearing screams. Alex Stewart, a police officer, lived just off Thomas Street across from Wilston State School. He heard the screaming and went to his window to find the source of the sound. He did not see anything out of the ordinary, so he and other residents mistakenly assumed the screams were coming from children playing late on the school playground.

Betty’s father stayed up late to wait for her, and at 1:30 a.m., he had notified the local police to report Betty missing.

Discovery

Early the next morning, Alex Stewart walked outside to retrieve the morning paper. Upon doing so, he discovered the body of Betty Shanks, lying in his neighbor’s front yard at the corner of Carberry Street and Thomas Street.

Betty had been savagely brutalized. Both her face and legs showed markings found to be consistent with black boot polish, indicating the young woman had been kicked repeatedly. Several of Betty’s teeth were found meters from her body, and her jaw was fractured, indicating the intensity of the beating she had received.

Her bra straps were broken, and her underwear had been removed, but there was no indication of sexual assault. Bloodied handprints were found at the scene, but they were too smudged to obtain fingerprints.

Betty’s purse was left behind, with its contents scattered about the yard. Her jewelry, including her watch, was also left with her body. Her watch was frozen at 9:53, indicating that she had been killed 21 minutes or less after leaving the tram terminal. Her tram ticket, now covered in blood, was still held tightly in her hand.

In the blink of an eye, Betty’s life had been cut short by an unknown attacker. Her body was discarded like trash in a yard only a few blocks from her home. Her family may have even heard her screams echo in the distance, but assumed, like everyone else, that it was nothing to worry about. In an instant, a quiet, safe, country town had been turned upside down in what is now referred to as the night that Brisbane was robbed of its innocence.

Investigation

Immediately after Betty’s body was found, a full investigation was launched. Detectives searched for clues, digging through dirty laundry and garbage bins for any bloodstained clothes, knocking on hundreds of doors, and interrogating thousands of people.

Based on the physical evidence at the scene, the police concluded that the killer must be a physically large man due to the severity of Betty’s injuries and the size of the bloody handprints left behind.

Police also suspected that the killer likely had experience, as Betty must have been attacked, killed, and dumped within the span of only twelve minutes. Evidence pointed to Betty being a victim of opportunity, as she had no enemies, kept to herself, and was devoted to her work and studies.

Nothing of value was stolen, and Betty had not been sexually assaulted, ruling out both motivations for murdering her. There was a line of trees adjacent to the school and directly across from the yard where Betty had been dumped; the prevailing theory was that the killer had pulled Betty into the cover of the trees, killed her, then dumped her body over the fence of the yard on Carberry Street.

Possible Suspect

Anyone with ties to Betty was interviewed, including her supervisor, John Ducey. According to Ducey, two days before her murder, Betty had received a strange and upsetting phone call from an unknown man.

He said this call had rattled Betty and that she had not been her usual self since receiving it. Additionally, four eyewitnesses at the tram terminal the night of Betty’s death reported seeing a tall man in a brown suit pacing around the terminal.

The man in the brown suit may be connected to Betty’s murder, but his identity remains unknown. However, a woman named Desche Birtles believes that she knows who this man was- her father, Eric Sterry.

Sterry worked as a locksmith and had changed the locks at Betty’s parents’ home, after which his daughter believes Sterry became obsessed with Betty. Desche attempted to report her father as the killer to the police on numerous occasions, and stated that she saw him burning clothes on the night of the murder.

Interestingly, Sterry had been a former soldier- a detail that makes his involvement a bit more likely. Betty had a patterned marking on her forehead, a pattern identical to the canvas gaiters worn by soldiers.

Many soldiers frequented the area, and in fact, an army dress rehearsal was happening at the RNA Showgrounds not far from Betty’s neighborhood on the night of her murder. Because so many soldiers were in the area, Sterry being a soldier does not automatically cast suspicion on him, but coupled with the other details, it does lend credibility to the theory.

A witness who saw the man in the brown suit confirmed that Sterry does match the description of the man she saw at the train terminal. Author Ted Duhs, who believes that Sterry did kill Betty Shanks, claims that his medical records indicate a history of violent behavior and diagnoses from two psychiatrists of potential psychotic behavior and “anxiety hysteria.”

Perhaps the most substantial indicator of guilt in Sterry’s case is a photograph of Betty that, according to his daughter, he kept as a memento in the family’s photo album until his death in 1997. A note on the back of the photograph reads: “Betty Thomson Shanks, murdered 1952.”

Did Eric Sterry kill Betty after she rejected his advances, as his daughter believes? Did he keep her photograph in the family’s album for 45 years as a trophy? Or was Eric innocent, and instead kept the photo to remember a bright young woman he knew whose life was cut tragically short? Since no arrest has ever been made and no person has ever been named responsible in any official capacity, we may never know.

Closing Thoughts

The murder of Betty Shanks is one of the oldest and most infamous unsolved murder cases in Australia’s history. In a matter of 12 minutes, someone had managed to attack and murder a young woman only a few blocks from home without anyone seeing what had happened until it was too late.

Over the years, multiple people have confessed to killing Betty Shanks, but they all have been determined to be false confessions. Today, the case remains open, and as of 2024, the reward has been increased to $50,000 for any information leading to the person responsible.

Background

The brutal unsolved murder of 17-year-old Minnie Stott in 1940 remains the oldest cold case in the files of Greater Manchester Police. At the time of her death, Britain was embroiled in the Second World War and in the midst of nationwide blackouts following blitzes by German bombers.

While the majority of the nation was focused on the war effort, for a small number of violent predators, like the killer of Minnie Stott, the darkness was a perfect cover for their wicked deeds.

Bolton, England, 1940

In Greater Manchester, in the North West of England, the borough of Bolton was an industrial town famous for its textile industry, and it is in this town that a killer stalked his young victim.

During World War II, Britain was living under rationing and continued blackouts. The blackouts were first initiated on September 1st, 1939, to hide or extinguish artificial lights. Citizens would cover their windows with heavy curtains, and street lamps would be shut off to prevent enemy planes from bombing civilians, towns, and cities.

However, this came at a price - car accidents rose dramatically, as did personal injury due to the darkness that engulfed England at that time. Despite the circumstances, the people of Bolton did their best to go about their daily lives as normally as they could.

Minnie “Peggy” Stott

One of these was a 17-year-old girl named Minnie Stott, affectionately known as “Peggy” by her friends.

Stott was an only child, the daughter of Alice and James Stott. The family lived on Clarence Street, not far from Bolton town centre. Minnie was described as a “happy and cheerful” person who loved to frequent dancing halls with her friends and enjoyed trips to the cinema.

Minnie Stott was a typical girl of the time who enjoyed a simple social life and held down a job as a manager at Hanburys Green Grocers within Bolton’s town centre, but all that would change during one violent night.

A Gruesome Discovery

Late on the night of November 16th, 1940, Officer Harry C. Brooks was conducting a routine check of a lock-up shop on Bradshaw Gate in Bolton’s town centre; he rounded the brick archways, and there in the yard of Parkers Garage, he stumbled upon the body of a young woman.

The young woman was lying on her back, with one arm stretched above her head. Upon closer inspection, Brooks noticed the faint trickle of blood that stained her lips, and on her neck, a large, red welt. There was nothing else at the scene, apart from the young girl’s handbag that was at her feet, with all the contents still intact, but disturbingly, her underwear was missing.

The victim was identified as 17-year-old Minnie Stott.

Investigation

The inquest on her body found that she had died of Asphyxia, which explained the red mark on her neck. Minnie had also been sexually assaulted. She was found to have died approximately two hours before her body was discovered, making her death around 10 p.m. on that Saturday evening.

After breaking the devastating news to her parents, Alice and James, the police also had to ask questions about what they knew about Minnie’s movements that night, including what she was wearing; her father told the police that Minnie was wearing a green tweed skirt, flesh coloured stockings, brown shoes, and a long, striking blue coat.

She had also been wearing a “crepe de chine” scarf; however, the scarf was not found at the scene of the crime. The missing scarf was now determined to be the murder weapon used to strangle Minnie, which the murderer took with them, along with her underwear. Neither the scarf or her underwear has ever been found.

When the police tried to determine the timeline leading up to her murder, a few details caused suspicion that Minnie may have met up with someone that evening - this was believed due to her Fathers account of events.

Minnie arrived home from work at around 6:40 p.m. that evening, and told her Father she was heading back out to the cinema, although she did not mention whether this was her friends or someone else. Around 7:45 p.m., Minnie left the house and travelled into Bolton town centre, where at 8 p.m. she visited her mother, who worked as a waitress at the United Cow Products Restaurant, and told her she was heading to the cinema.

Possible Suspects

The police began to look into Minnie’s movements, and two days before her death, it appears that she and her friend, Emily Wilks, shared a few drinks with an on-leave soldier the pair had met in a local fish and chip shop. The threesome had drinks at the Founders Arms pub before going to a dance hall; however, both girls arrived home safe that evening.

The police ran on a hunch that Minnie may have wanted to see the soldier again, but alone, and that could be who she met up with the evening of her demise; this particular bit of information was widely shared with the media, in the hopes of drumming up some leads, and it did just that. The soldier was tracked down by the police and questioned, but the man in question was cleared, though it has never been revealed why.

It was also reported that on the night she was murdered, Minnie was seen arguing with an unidentified man who was described as clean-shaven, between 20 and 25 years old, average height and build, with high cheekbones and sunken eyes. He was wearing a dark overcoat and a hat pulled down low. The two were arguing, and the man called her “Peggy”, and she addressed him back, implying that she was familiar with him. Though police attempted to identify the man, they were unsuccessful.

Another lead came from a woman who owned a sweet shop in town; she told the police that on that Saturday evening, two girls came into her shop to buy sweets and cigarettes at around 8:20 p.m. She was almost certain that Minnie was one of the girls. This information helped officers start to piece together the hours leading up to the murder, as when a search was conducted on her handbag at the crime scene, they found sweets inside.

The police tried to identify the other girl who had been seen with Minnie in the shop that night in an attempt to interview her; however, she never came forward or was identified.

On a cold January day, Minnie’s grieving parents were paying a visit to Minnie’s grave when they were approached by an unidentified woman. The woman proceeded to tell them that Minnie had been out on the night of her death with two other girls and that they were all being followed by two men.

According to the woman, Minnie was dragged into a car by the men on Bradshawgate, but the two girls ran away. The woman actually had the names of one of the men and one of the girls, but the police were never able to locate them or the car in question.

All of the information given to the police by potential witnesses seemed very promising at first, but they all led to dead ends.

Cold Case

As time went on, interest in the case began to dwindle, and the media almost abruptly stopped sharing information or even printing stories about the murder. A grieving family was left without any answers, and the police were completely in the dark - the case would remain cold for almost 55 years.

In 1995, a Morris Cobblet wrote a letter to the local newspaper; Cobblet said he worked in a barbershop at the time of the case, and had cut the hair of one of the investigators’ sons. He overheard the son detailing how the senior officer saw the case as closed, due to them tracking a suspect to Bury, which is situated about 6 miles from Bolton, but the suspect had committed suicide.

No one knows who this suspect was or why they were even considered a suspect. No other information about this man and the line of enquiry has ever been released or published.

Closing Thoughts

The case of Minnie Stott is one of the greatest mysteries known to the Greater Manchester Police. No one can say for sure what happened that night, but it is clear that a person with murderous intent took advantage of a young girl in the most depraved way possible, and all whilst under the cover of the wartime blackouts.

It has now been 85 years since the murder of Minnie Stott, and there are no leads, no suspects, and no real answers to any of the questions surrounding the hours leading up to her death. Sadly, it remains almost certain that the identity of her killer has been lost to history.

Background

On July 28, 1980, just two days before he was set to be executed for a cold-blooded double murder, 32-year-old Troy Leon Gregg, along with three other convicted killers, escaped from death row at Georgia State Prison in Reidsville. The brazen death row escape was the first in Georgia’s history.

However, Gregg’s reprieve would be short-lived. The next day, his battered body was found in a North Carolina river. Though there have been several different versions of the circumstances surrounding Gregg’s murder, no one was ever convicted, and his murder remains officially unsolved.

This is the tale of Troy Leon Gregg, the man who couldn’t cheat death.

November 1973

On the morning of November 21, 1973, 25-year-old North Carolina native Troy Leon Gregg and 16-year-old Ralford “Sam” Allen were hitchhiking in Florida when they were picked up by two men, Fred Simmons and Bob “Tex” Moore.

At a certain point, the car broke down. Sometime later, Simmons and Moore were given a ride to a car dealership by a Florida State Trooper, where Simmons paid about $275 cash and bought a 1960 Pontiac. Simmons left with the bill of sale, intending to return later for the car title.

Simmons and Moore, now driving the Pontiac, again picked up Gregg and Allen and continued their trip north. According to reports, both Simmons and Moore were seen flashing a lot of cash. On the way, they picked up a third hitchhiker, Dennis Weaver, who was also heading north.

According to later accounts by Weaver, Simmons and Moore were drinking heavily while Gregg drove the portion of the trip that Weaver was in the car. At about 11:00 p.m., Weaver was dropped off near the intersection of I-85 and Highway 23 in Atlanta, Georgia.

The four of them later stopped at a rest stop in Gwinnett County. Allen would later tell police that after Simmons and Moore got out of the car, Gregg told Allen to get out because “we’re going to rob them.”

Gregg then leaned against the car with a pistol in his hand, and as Simmons and Moore were walking back towards the car, he shot both of them. He then went over to where they were lying and shot both men in the head at point-blank range.

He then took all of the cash off both men as well as the contents of their pockets before returning to the Pontiac. He told Allen to get in, and the two of them drove away.

Arrest

Two days later, on November 23, Dennis Weaver saw a newspaper article about the two murders. He contacted the Gwinnett County Police Department and told them about Gregg and Allen, and that he believed they were heading for Asheville, North Carolina.

Authorities in Asheville were then notified, and police detained Gregg and Allen, who were driving in Simmons’ Pontiac. During the search, police found a .25 caliber automatic pistol in Gregg’s pocket.

Ballistic tests would later confirm that it was the same gun used in the murders of Simmons and Moore. Weaver also identified Gregg and Allen as the two individuals he had ridden with days prior.

Allen told the police what happened, and Gregg confirmed his account, allegedly telling detectives, “By God, I wanted them dead.” However, he would later try to coerce Allen to change his story and lie about what happened.

Gregg then changed his story and claimed that Simmons was drunk and assaulted him, hitting him several times in the face, and that he used his gun to defend himself. However, this version of events fails to explain why he also shot and killed Moore, or why he robbed the two men after shooting both execution style.

Gregg v. Georgia

Though no one realized at the time, the trial of Troy Gregg would have tremendous implications for U.S. case law and the application of the death penalty.

In 1972, a year before Gregg’s arrest and trial, a landmark case known as Furman v. Georgia had been heard before the United States Supreme Court. A majority of justices ruled that the arbitrary use of the death penalty violated both the Eighth and Fourteenth Amendments to the Constitution.

The result was essentially a national moratorium on capital punishment. While several states did away with the death penalty entirely, other states, including Georgia, rewrote their laws to ensure that the death penalty was not handed out arbitrarily, but instead met a strict criteria.

During Gregg’s trial, prosecutors laid out the three considerations that were necessary in order for the jury to return a sentence of death. The first was that Gregg had committed the double homicide while committing another capital felony, i.e., armed robbery and auto theft. The second was that he committed the murders with the intent of stealing the victims’ property.

The third consideration was not as cut-and-dry. It asked if the murder was “Outrageously or wantonly vile, horrible, or inhuman in that it involved torture, depravity of mind, or an aggravated battery to the victim.” After some consideration, the jury determined that all of the state’s requirements had been met, and they imposed a sentence of death.

In what became another landmark case, Gregg v. Georgia, Gregg’s case was heard by the Supreme Court in 1976. Ultimately, the court ruled that Gregg’s death sentence had not been imposed arbitrarily and that his constitutional rights had not been violated.

And so, on July 2, 1976, Troy Gregg became the first person to have his death sentence upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court since the Furman ruling. The ruling had essentially reinstated the death penalty, albeit with more stringent guidelines on how it could be applied.

Prison Break and Death

On July 28, 1980, Gregg and three other death row inmates, Timothy McCorquodale, Johnnie L. Johnson, and David A. Jarrell, used smuggled hacksaw blades to saw through their cell bars and the window of an exercise room and made their way to a fire escape.

The four inmates had altered and dyed their pajamas black to look like guard uniforms. They were apparently convincing enough that other guards mistook them for colleagues, and the four men walked through the main gate. It was the first escape by death row inmates in Georgia’s history.

The four escapees then drove off in a car that had been left in the prison’s visitors’ parking lot by a relative. Later that day, Gregg allegedly placed a call to Charles Postell of the Albany Herald newspaper, informing him of their escape and complaining about the prison’s inhumane conditions.

Postell then called prison officials and told them about Gregg’s phone call. It was Postell’s call that first alerted prison staff to the escape, as they were unaware that the four inmates were missing.

The following day, Troy Gregg’s body was found in the Catawba River in North Carolina. He had been severely beaten, and an autopsy concluded that he had died by suffocation caused by swelling.

The other three escaped prisoners were captured two days later in a rundown house in North Carolina after an hours long standoff with police. The house was owned by a member of the Outlaws motorcycle gang who was friends with David Jarrell, one of the escaped men.

Also in the house at the time was James Cecil Horne, who was also alleged to be a member of the Outlaws. Initially, Horne was charged with Gregg’s murder; however, charges were later dropped due to a lack of evidence.

What Happened?

There are differing accounts of what supposedly happened to Troy Gregg. One of them alleges that Gregg was in a biker bar in North Carolina and got belligerently drunk and attempted to assault a waitress. He was then beaten to death by local bikers and dumped in a lake behind the bar.

Another version of events has Gregg being beaten to death by fellow prisoner Timothy McCorquodale with the help of James Horne. The motive for the killing is unclear, but it has been suggested that Gregg’s phone call to the reporter may have been the cause of the beating.

No one was ever convicted for the crime, and the murder of Troy Gregg remains unsolved. The other three prisoners were returned to Georgia and transferred to a newer and more secure facility in Jackson, Georgia.

Timothy McCorquodale was executed in 1987 for the brutal rape, torture, and murder of a 17-year-old girl. Johnnie L. Johnson and David A. Jarrell are still in prison serving life sentences.

Background

On March 12, 2004, police in Fresno, California, responded to what initially sounded like a routine custody dispute; two women had shown up at a small home on West Hammond Avenue, demanding the return of their children from the man who had raised and abused them.

The man inside was 57-year-old Marcus Delon Wesson; he was quiet, calm, and dressed entirely in black. Officers who interacted with him described his demeanor as almost “serene”, even as the confrontation grew more tense by the minute.

No one, not the women on the lawn, not the officers forming a perimeter, not even the family members who had previously escaped his control, could have predicted the sheer horror unfolding inside the walls of that house.

Marcus Wesson

Marcus Delon Wesson was born on August 22, 1946, in Kansas. His family would later relocate to California. The oldest of four children, he would later describe his father as an abusive alcoholic who abandoned the family when Marcus was a child, and that his mother was a “religious fanatic.” Marcus and his siblings were raised in the Seventh-Day Adventist Church

Wesson dropped out of high school and later joined the U.S. Army, where he served as an ambulance driver. After leaving the Army, Wesson began living with an older woman, Rosemary Solorio, and her eight children in San Jose, California. In 1971, they had a son.

Then, in 1974, Marcus, 27, allegedly, with Rosemary’s permission, married her 15-year-old daughter, Elizabeth. Over the years, they would have nine children, as well as an infant who died.

In 1989, Marcus and Elizabeth took in seven of Elizabeth’s nieces and nephews after her younger sister became unable to care for them due to a drug problem. The Wessons were now raising a family of 16 children.

At this time, Marcus had no steady income, and the family lived on welfare. Their housing situation was also transient, with the family living where they could find shelter. At one point, this included a large army tent in the Santa Cruz mountains and a decaying tugboat off the coast of Marin County.

Reportedly, the children would sometimes have to scavenge for food in restaurant dumpsters while Wesson would enjoy hamburgers and snacks. When the children were able, they were required to work and hand over all their earnings to him. Later, when she was asked why her husband never worked, Elizabeth said, “You can’t work when you are on welfare.”

In 1990, Wesson was convicted of welfare fraud and perjury and sentenced to five years’ probation. It is alleged that around this time, Wesson also began sexually abusing his daughters and nieces. He later “married” three of his nieces and two of his daughters in a bizarre ceremony. He would go on to father children with all of them.

Move to Fresno and Fanaticism

By 2000, the family had moved to Fresno. They lived in a house that had previously been badly damaged by fire. The family rarely interacted with the outside world, and many of their neighbors were unaware of just how many people were living in the home.

Marcus isolated the entire household from outsiders by homeschooling the children with materials he created himself, and teaching them a personalized blend of Christianity, apocalyptic prophecy, and bizarre vampiric symbolism. Part of Wesson’s school “curriculum” involved teaching girls oral sex from as young as 8 or 9. Their domestic responsibilities included washing Wesson’s dreadlocks and scratching his armpits and head

According to testimony and police interviews, Wesson taught the children that he was a prophet, who sometimes described himself as “God” or “Jesus”, and that women were created to serve men. He also taught that children must obey him because he was their “Lord”, and that the outside world was evil, and that it was seeking to destroy their “holy” family.

Within the household, girls wore long dresses, kept their hair covered, and were taught to avoid eye contact with any men outside the family, with romantic relationships strictly forbidden, especially outside of the family. The boys in the family were raised to revere Wesson unquestioningly, while the girls were raised to serve him.

Wesson allowed the girls to work once they were old enough but kept the family under control through fear and violence - he taught them that nothing was more important than them staying together, not even life itself, and he preached that the police were “devils in disguise” and that suicide was an acceptable way to escape them, or anyone trying to relinquish control of the family, such as breaking them up.

The children were told that if authorities ever came to take them away, they were to kill themselves, including the younger children, before allowing outsiders to “separate the family.” Wesson instructed his children that, if authorities ever tried to remove them, they must kill their own children first, then themselves, with the exception that he would remain alive, so he could explain their “choice.”

Wesson would repeatedly reinforce the doctrine through drawings, sermons, and scripted lectures on martyrdom. He reportedly asked the children, “Are you ready to die for the Lord?”, referring to their devotion to him. Wesson’s theology emphasized the sacredness of blood - a belief that some experts later compared to vampirism.

He even purchased a dozen handcrafted mahogany coffins, telling an antique dealer they were for a “boat project.” However, investigators would later argue that these coffins were bought for something far more sinister - not for a project, but in preparation.

Escaping the Cult

Despite his control, cracks eventually formed, and some of Wesson’s nieces who had been abused as children escaped the household - they grew older, gained independence, and realized the extent of the manipulation they had survived.

Ruby and Sofina Solorio, two of Wesson’s nieces who had children fathered by Wesson, escaped and rebuilt their lives; they demanded the return of their children - this led to a long, heated custody battle, but Wesson refused every request - his authority depended on isolation, with his children representing not only his “lineage” but also his control, so handing them over to anyone was never going to be an option.

In 2003, Wesson and his “wives” and children had purchased a home in Fresno that had formerly been an office building. However, the city was attempting to evict them. Ruby and Sofina then learned that Marcus was planning to relocate his family to Washington State.

The Fresno Mass Murder

On March 12th, 2004, they returned with the intention of retrieving their children, but Wesson refused, leading Ruby and Sofina to call the police for help. The scene outside the house on West Hammond Avenue was chaotic and emotional - Sofina and Ruby pleaded with Wesson from the driveway, with the Fresno police trying to mediate, unsure of how volatile Wesson might be.

Witnesses reported that Wesson withdrew deeper into the home during the confrontation, with several of the children following him. When he finally exited the home, he was splattered with blood. Officers drew their weapons, but Wesson didn’t resist; he simply surrendered.

When the police entered the home, they made a horrific discovery. Nine bodies were arranged in a pile, in a room with mahogany coffins - each victim shot with a .22 caliber handgun.

Wesson had coerced one of his older children, and wives, 25-year-old Sebhrenah, into shooting eight of the other children, and then herself. The second oldest victim was another one of his children and wives; she was 17. The youngest victims were two 1-year-old daughters and his one-year-old son.

Trial and Sentence

Marcus Wesson was charged with nine counts of first-degree murder and 14 counts of sexual abuse involving his daughters and nieces. The defense contended that Wesson did not pull the trigger, citing the lack of gunpowder residue on his hands, and that his daughter, Sebhrenah, whose DNA was found on the gun, was the true killer.

Prosecutor Lisa Gamoian countered that Wesson was the architect of the murders, regardless of whether he physically pulled the trigger; he spent decades grooming his family into obedience, he created conditions for the massacre through coercive control, and most importantly, even if it was one of his daughters who fired the gun, Wesson was legally and morally responsible.

On June 17, 2005, Marcus Wesson was found guilty on all nine murder counts, including all 14 sexual-abuse charges involving his daughters and nieces. Ten days later, the jury recommended the death penalty, which was upheld by the judge.

He was also handed a 102-year prison sentence. He was transferred to San Quentin State Prison to await execution. As of 2025, Wesson remains on San Quentin’s death row.

Legacy

The Wesson cult case exposed how easy it can be for abusive cults to exist unnoticed when they hide within a large, “private” family - Marcus Wesson was not a father to his family; he was a congregation leader whose followers shared his bloodline.

Wesson didn’t lead a congregation, nor did he recruit strangers into a charismatic “movement”; he did something far more disturbing. Through incest, sexual assault, violence, and control, he turned his own family into a cult: he isolated them, he preached to them, controlled them, abused them, fathered children with them, and, ultimately, led them into tragedy.

The Fresno Police Department still cites the case as one of the most traumatic scenes officers have ever encountered - it influenced training and response protocols for family-based cult environments.

The nine victims found in that Fresno back bedroom were not just casualties of murder; they were casualties of a lifetime of manipulation overseen by control, isolation, and abuse.

Marcus Wesson’s story is one of the most haunting examples of how a single person, with no real power, can, through charisma, delusion, and unchecked authority, warp an entire family into a closed world from which there is no escape, unless that escape is through the ultimate act of violence.

For many, Christmas Eve is a time of celebratory anticipation, a time for joy, warmth, and gathering with family and loved ones. But for one family in the Los Angeles suburb of Covina, California, Christmas Eve in 2008 became a hellish nightmare as a deranged man dressed in a Santa suit viciously attacked his ex-wife and her family during a holiday party. When the gunsmoke cleared, nine people lay dead with several others wounded. This cold-blooded crime came to be known as the Covina Massacre.

Bruce Pardo

Bruce Jeffrey Pardo was born on March 23rd, 1963, in Los Angeles, California. His father was an engineer, and Bruce demonstrated his intelligence from an early age. After graduating from John H. Francis Polytechnic High School, Bruce went on to pursue an engineering degree, following in his father’s footsteps.

He graduated from California State University, Northridge, with a degree in computer science and quickly landed a job as a software engineer at California’s esteemed Jet Propulsion Laboratory. In addition to his intelligence, Bruce was very sociable and outgoing. A charismatic young man, Bruce was known for his wit, charm, and humor. At his college graduation, Bruce walked across the stage carrying an inflatable doll simply because he thought it would be funny and make people laugh.

Those who knew him in his younger years remembered his extroverted personality and his razor-sharp mind. Bruce was skilled enough to hack into JPL’s systems to snoop on his coworker’s salaries. By all accounts, Bruce Pardo was a promising young man well on his way to a happy and successful life, but that promise was not to be.

Failed Relationships

Sometime in the 1980s, Pardo met a woman named Delia. The two were later engaged and were planning their wedding. Despite Pardo’s successful career working at JPL, he was perfectly content to allow his fiancée to drain her savings to pay for the wedding. In fact, Delia financed the entire wedding herself, with no help from Pardo.

The wedding was set for June 1989. When the day finally came, Delia went to the altar alone. Pardo did not show up for the ceremony, and nobody was able to contact or locate him. A few weeks later, Pardo reappeared.

He had taken Delia’s last $3000 in savings and used it to fund a solo vacation to Palm Beach. Naturally, that was the end of Pardo’s relationship with Delia, who now wanted nothing to do with him.

Pardo later met a woman named Elena Lucano in the early 2000s, and the two would have an on-again, off-again relationship. Pardo and Elena had a son together, and for a while, their relationship seemed to be more stable than it had previously been.

Then, when their child was only a toddler, tragedy struck. While Pardo was home and watching television, their young son fell into the pool and drowned. Paramedics responded, and the child was rushed to the hospital, where he remained for several days.

Remarkably, the boy survived the incident. Upon returning home from the hospital, Pardo seemed to fawn over his son and show genuine concern for his well-being. Then, the family received devastating news: as a result of the oxygen deprivation to his brain, their son had suffered extensive and irreversible brain damage, rendering him unable to care for himself or lead a normal life.

After hearing this, Pardo became an absent father. He abandoned his son and partner, leaving Elena to care for a severely disabled child on her own. Elena pushed for child support, but Pardo continually avoided paying her.

Marriage to Sylvia Ortega

In 2004, Pardo met a woman named Sylvia Ortega. Sylvia had previously been married twice; her first husband had passed away in a car accident, and her second marriage had ended in divorce. From these previous marriages, Sylvia had three children, including a young daughter.

In 2006, Pardo and Ortega were married. Shortly after the marriage, the constant fighting began. The arguments were almost always rooted in money-related issues. Pardo wanted to keep his finances completely separate from Sylvia’s, and he wanted to maintain a private bank account that only he could access.

Sylvia pushed back against Pardo’s demands for separate accounts. Amidst their ongoing financial arguments, Sylvia uncovered a shocking secret. She learned that Pardo had a child from a previous relationship that he’d so far kept hidden from her.

She also learned that the child had suffered brain damage after an accident, and that Pardo had been dodging his child support while continuing to claim the child as a dependent on his taxes to earn the tax benefits. She learned this through Pardo’s mother, who had grown increasingly frustrated by her son’s irresponsible behavior.

Separation and Divorce

After discovering Pardo’s deception and blatant disregard for his own child, Sylvia decided she no longer wanted to be in a relationship with him. In March of 2008, Sylvia and Pardo separated. Sylvia asked if she could stay for a couple more months until her daughter finished the school year. Pardo agreed, but then one day, while she was out of the house, he threw out all her belongings.

Pardo was ordered to pay spousal support, but he either dodged the payments or wrote checks that later bounced. Then, on December 18th, a judge officially finalized the divorce. Pardo was allowed to keep the home, but he was ordered to pay Sylvia an additional $10,000 on top of the spousal support payments.

Sylvia was finally officially free of Pardo, and she was preparing to gather with her family for the holidays and celebrate her newfound freedom with her close friends. But before she would get the chance, the lives of Sylvia and her family would be ripped apart.

The Covina Massacre

On December 24th, 2008, Sylvia Ortega and her family gathered for their annual Christmas Eve festivities at her parents’ home in the Los Angeles suburb of Covina. The Ortega family was a lively and loving bunch, with neighbors describing them as the sweetest people who treated everyone they knew like family. Around 25 people gathered that night to celebrate Christmas together, but their celebration would quickly turn into a nightmare.

Background

In June 2013, the Springfield, Missouri, Police Department received an anonymous call from an individual claiming that a patient at a local hospital, 24-year-old Sarah Staudte, had been poisoned. The caller also said that Sarah’s mother, 50-year-old Diane Staudte, was responsible for “Two or three homicides.”

The caller mentioned that both Diane’s husband, Mark, and son, Shaun, had died from mysterious illnesses within the past year and a half. After investigators confronted Diane with their suspicions, she made a chilling confession, though she would later retract it and claim her innocence.

The Staudte Family

Mark and Diane Staudte first met at St. John’s College in Winfield, Kansas. The school was affiliated with the Lutheran Church, which would play an important role in the family’s life. The couple married in December 1985 and quickly started a family. Their son Shaun was born in July 1986, followed by daughters Sarah, Rachel, and later Brianna.

The Staudts lived in Springfield, Missouri, where Diane worked as a registered nurse and clinical supervisor for United Healthcare. Mark worked as a bartender, along with various other odd jobs. Instead of a steady job, he preferred to pursue music, a passion he shared with his wife.

He was in a band called Messing with Destiny, which regularly played in bars and restaurants in the area.

This love for the musical arts was passed down to their kids: Shaun, Sarah, Rachel, and Brianna. The family utilized their talents most at their beloved Redeemer Lutheran Church, where Diane excelled at the organ and Rachel sang and played the guitar.

Like most families, the Staudts faced challenges as the years passed and their children grew older. Shaun struggled with autism, little Brianna had learning disabilities, and Sarah was struggling with debt and finding a job after college. Diane’s relationship with her family was somewhat distant, apart from Rachel, who was her favorite child.

Compounding on this stress was the breakdown of Diane and Mark’s marriage. Diane became resentful and disenchanted with her husband, who she claims had turned to drinking, possibly drugs, and partying instead of holding down a steady job like his wife.

Yet despite the couple’s strained marriage, their religious beliefs kept them from seeking a divorce.

Cryptic Posts

Then, in 2012, there was a string of cryptic and bizarre Facebook posts. The family members were quite active on Facebook, commenting on each other’s posts as if they weren’t under the same roof. And the posts got stranger and stranger over time.

Shaun started posting long paragraphs describing how bad his father’s health had gotten, despite Diane’s insistence to church members that he was just feeling under the weather when they would ask her where her husband was.

One post stated, “My father is suffering from an incurable mental illness and is likely to die,” while another said, “My father has changed from panic, aggressive, and selfish to depressed and suicidal. He took his car, wallet, and cell phone…if he’s dead, I want to see him to make sure he is dead.”

Suspicious Deaths

On April 8, 2012, a day after Mark’s 61st birthday, Springfield police received a call from his family at home saying that he was dead. According to his wife, Mark had been exhibiting flu-like symptoms, including fatigue and a lack of appetite, all week.

Diane stated that she had tried to convince him to seek medical attention from a doctor or hospital, but he refused. When she left for and returned from church, he was dead and had a ring of blood around his mouth. Diane posted an announcement of his death on Facebook to alert family and friends alongside a bible quote.

Mark’s death was ruled to have resulted from prior medical issues, and his remains were cremated. During the memorial service, some guests noticed that Diane did not seem upset at all. While the church community was expecting to care for and support a grieving widow, they received the opposite. Diane was described as aloof and unbothered. Notably, Mark’s former bandmates seemed to take the loss much harder than his widow.

Following Mark’s death, Diane Staudte sold the family’s home and purchased a more expensive home, which she and her children moved into in July 2012. On September 2, police responded to a call of a subject not breathing at the home. Once there, they located 26-year-old Shaun Staudte, who was deceased.

Upon examination, Shaun did not appear to have any injuries on him. He did, however, have a ring of dried blood around his mouth, similar to how his father, Mark, had been found. According to Diane, Shaun had been ill the previous two to three weeks and had been experiencing flu-like symptoms.

Once again, Shaun’s death was ruled to have resulted from a previous medical condition. He had died less than six months after his father in an almost identical manner. Like Mark's, Shaun’s remains were also cremated.

Unlike Mark, though, Shaun did not receive a memorial service or even an obituary, and his passing was only briefly mentioned in a Facebook post by Diane nearly three weeks after his death.

The Truth Revealed

On June 9, 2013, Diane Staudte posted a message on Facebook that read, “asking for prayers as my daughter Sarah is in critical condition in ICU tonight.” She had just brought her oldest daughter, Sarah, to the hospital. Sarah was suffering from organ failure and brain bleeding. Numerous tests were done, yet doctors were at a loss to explain her condition.

Though Diane would continue to post updates on her daughter’s condition, her behavior and demeanor at the hospital were more than a little troubling. She reportedly laughed and joked with the hospital staff and mentioned her upcoming vacation plans.

Then, on June 11, an anonymous tip to police said that Diane had poisoned her daughter, Sarah, and murdered her son, Shaun, and her husband, Mark. It turned out the tipster was the Staudte family’s church pastor, who had become suspicious due to Diane’s seeming lack of any emotion after the death of her husband and son.

Diane was brought in for questioning, and she denied any responsibility. Instead, she claimed her family was deliberately poisoning themselves with antifreeze. However, thanks to the skilled tactics of the interrogator, her story began to unravel.

She admitted to hating Mark and wanting to get rid of him. She called her autistic son “more than a pest” and resented Sarah because she had student loans and did not have a job. She admitted to poisoning Mark’s sports drinks and Shaun and Sarah’s sodas with antifreeze.

During the course of the investigation, it was learned that Diane’s middle daughter, Rachel, who was also her favorite, was also involved. Though she felt slightly guilty, Rachel was more concerned with moving into Shaun’s bedroom and getting her father’s car when they died. Investigators found Rachel’s journal, where she documented the planning and aftermath of the murders in a poetic or prose-like fashion.

One chilling passage read, “It’s sad when I realize how my father will pass on in the next two months ... Shaun, my brother, will move on shortly after.” She wrote that she felt uncomfortable being in Shaun’s room because she felt a spiritual presence there. She claimed that Sarah was aware of her mother and sister trying to get rid of her father in some way, but she did not expect them to turn on her.

Sentencing

In May 2015, Rachel Staudte pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder and one count of first-degree assault. In March 2016, she received two life sentences with the possibility of parole after 42 and a half years.

In January 2016, Diane Staudte pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder and one count of assault and was given two life sentences without the possibility of parole.

Both women have since filed appeals to vacate their pleas.

Aftermath

Sarah Staudte survived her poisoning but was left with neurological damage. She is currently living in an assisted care facility. The youngest Staudte daughter was placed in foster care. Luckily, Diane was arrested before she was harmed, as it was revealed that she was going to be poisoned as well.

In a 2022 interview with ABC, Diane Staudte claimed that she is not guilty and that her husband was mixed up with some “dangerous people” who were likely responsible. She also claims that her confession was coerced, but refuses to say by whom.

Diane Staudte is currently serving her sentence at the Chillicothe Correctional Center in Chillicothe, Missouri.

Background

On the morning of November 1, 1980, a truck driver traveling down Interstate 45 near Huntsville, Texas, spotted something on the roadside and, with morbid curiosity, stopped to investigate. There, lying face down in the grass, was the body of a young girl; she was naked, bruised, and lifeless.

The trucker called the police at around 9:20 a.m., and when investigators arrived, they got to work assessing the brutal scene; they determined that the girl had been deceased for around six hours, placing her time of death in the early hours of the morning. They also determined that the girl had been sexually assaulted and strangled to death.

The girl, estimated to be between 14 and 18 years old, had no personal belongings on her, apart from a pair of red, high-heeled sandals and a gold necklace with a smoky blue pendant around her neck. For more than four decades, the body found battered, assaulted, and dumped on the ground would be known as the “Walker County Jane Doe.”

It wasn’t until 2021 that forensic genealogy gave her a name again: This is her story, one that spans hundreds of miles and more than four decades.

Halloween Night 1980

On the evening of October 31, 1980, Huntsville, Texas, was booming with Halloween revelers: college students from Sam Houston State University celebrated downtown, while truckers passed through on their nightly runs. Along Interstate 45, a stretch of highway that would later earn the grim nickname “The Texas Killing Fields”, a teenage girl was seen at two nearby stops.

Several witnesses first saw her at a Gulf gas station, then later at a truck stop diner, where she asked for directions to the Texas Department of Corrections Ellis Prison Farm, which was located several miles north of town.

The girl told the employees she was 19 years old and from Aransas Pass, Texas. The waitress she spoke to thought she looked younger than 19, so with concern, she asked the girl if her parents knew where she was, and the teen responded curtly, “Who cares?”

After this encounter, the young girl was last seen walking towards the highway, with witnesses saying she might have gotten into a blue 1973 or 1974 Chevrolet Caprice vehicle with a light-colored top, driven by a white man.

Unidentified Victim

In the early hours of November 1, a passing driver noticed what looked like a mannequin or bundle of clothing on the roadside near I-45 and Sam Houston State University, and when he stopped to check, he realized it was the body of a young girl.

Deputies from the Walker County Sheriff’s Office arrived quickly. The scene was nothing short of heartbreaking; the victim was nude and had been violently assaulted - the brutality of the attack was enough to weaken the stomach of even seasoned investigators.

As they examined the body, they noticed a lack of defensive wounds, which could point to her being restrained or unconscious at the time of the attack; her teeth seemed well cared for, and they were healthy and clean, indicating she likely came from a middle-class background.

Her cause of death was determined to be ‘asphyxiation by strangulation’, with the murder weapon believed to be a pair of pantyhose that were found near her body.

There were no identifying documents with her or any personal belongings, apart from her sandals and necklace. A check of her fingerprints yielded no results, and there were no missing persons reports that matched her description.

She was laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery in January 1981 with a plain headstone that read: “Unknown White Female - Died November 1, 1980.”

“Walker County Jane Doe”

Over the following decades, the case of the ‘Walker County Jane Doe’ haunted local law enforcement, and cold case investigators alike - her story would occasionally resurface in newspaper articles and online forums from those intrigued and obsessed with the series of unsolved murders along Interstate 45 between Houston and Dallas, the corridor or tarmac that would become infamous for unsolved disappearances, and homicides stretching as far to the 1970s.

The Walker County Jane Doe was never able to fully rest in peace. In 1999, her remains were exhumed for DNA testing, but unfortunately, the technology at that time was unable to generate a viable genetic profile. Years passed with no progress in the case.

Artists and forensic specialists created facial reconstructions and composite sketches to show what she might have looked like before her death, and these reconstructions were circulated nationwide through the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. Still, no one came forward to identify her as a potential family member, friend, or relative.

Breakthrough and Identification

In July 2020, the Walker County Sheriff’s Office partnered with Othram Inc., a private laboratory based in The Woodlands, Texas, that specialized in sequencing highly degraded DNA samples.

The technicians at Othram were provided with tissue samples preserved from the original autopsy; using ‘forensic-grade genome sequencing’, they were able to construct a complete genetic profile from the samples, something that had never before been possible in this case.

From there, genealogists compared the profile to public DNA databases, tracing distant relatives and possible ancestral lines; within months, the data pointed to a family in Minnesota.

In early 2021, contact was finally made with the living relatives who confirmed that a teenage girl named Sherri Ann Jarvis had disappeared from Stillwater, Minnesota, in 1980, and that she had not been heard from since.

On November 9, 2021, authorities publicly identified the Walker County Jane Doe as Sherri Ann Jarvis, age 14.

Sherri Ann Jarvis

On March 9th, 1966, Sherri Ann Jarvis was born in Stillwater, Minnesota, a small city on the bank of the St. Croix River, which separates Minnesota from Wisconsin. Those who later recalled Sherri described her as a ‘bright and independent young girl’ who struggled to fit inside the confines of her small-town world.

By the age of thirteen, Sherri had begun skipping school frequently, and the courts intervened, citing her as a ‘habitual truant’. Due to this, she was taken from her home and placed in a youth facility while awaiting juvenile court proceedings.

Records at the time suggested she was a teen who yearned for freedom. In fact, in March 1980, she yearned for freedom so much that she ran away from state custody.

In the months after she ran away, Sherri’s family received a letter from her, postmarked from Denver, Colorado. In it, she informed them that she was safe but planned to stay away until she was older —“until I’m at least 18 or 21.”

This letter would be the last trace of her before she vanished completely.

Unanswered Questions

After decades of searching, probing, and testing, Sherri’s identity was finally found, but her killer’s identity still remains unknown.

Detectives re-examined witness statements from that Halloween night in 1980, including the account of the blue Chevrolet Caprice with its male driver remaining a focal point in the case; some investigators believe Sherri could have been hitchhiking or had possibly accepted a ride while trying to reach the prison farm she had asked about at the truckstop diner.

It has never been confirmed why Sherri wanted to reach the prison farm, but theories suggest she may have known someone incarcerated there, or perhaps she had been told she could find work there—whatever her reason, Sherri never made it.

The details of the crime, the sexual assault, and the discarding of her body beside a busy highway did point to an opportunistic and predatory killer, and possibly someone familiar with the area.

The case of Sherri Ann Jarvis also overlaps in the location and time frame of several other unsolved murders along I-45, though no direct forensic link has ever been made. As of 2025, the Walker County Sheriff’s Office continues to pursue leads in the hopes of identifying the killer and is being assisted by the FBI and state investigators.

An Identity Restored

When Sherri’s name was finally restored to her after so many years, she was no longer just a body on the roadside or a body in a morgue, or the body in an unmarked grave; she was a daughter, a runaway, a teenager - she was Sherri Ann Jarvis.

Sherri’s story highlights a hard truth that resonates through countless unsolved cases: without identification, justice rarely follows, and when victims are nameless, they are often voiceless.

The identification of Sherri Ann Jarvis marked one of many cold case breakthroughs in the 2020s through advances in forensic technology and genealogy, and it is a process that has become critical for identifying unknown victims and tracking violent offenders.

The Walker County Sheriff’s Office partnered with local volunteers to replace Sherri’s old gravestone. Where it once read “Unidentified White Female,” it now bears her full name and dates of birth and death.

Sherri’s murder is still being investigated by the Walker County Sheriff’s Office, and they still receive occasional tips about her murder. Detectives and true crime sleuths alike continue to believe that someone out there knows something, but forty-five years later, the case remains open.

Sherri was only fourteen years old when her life was taken from her in such a brutal way; her life was ended by an evil predator before it truly had time to begin.

Sherri has her name back, but what remains now is to find the person who took it from her.

Background

For many, Halloween is a night for laughter, candy, and pretend scares. But on October 31st, 1984, the terror was all too real for 31-year-old Doreen Erbert. The expectant mother, eight months pregnant, heard a knock at her front door. When she answered, instead of an eager trick-or-treater, Doreen was met by a man wearing a wolf mask.

What happened next would become one of the most shocking and gruesome crimes in California’s history.

Doreen Erbert

Doreen Erbert was born Doreen Rae Hitchens in Santa Clara, California, in 1952. The Hitchens family was loving and close, and this shaped Doreen into the loving and caring woman she would grow up to become.

Doreen grew up and went to school to pursue work in the medical field, an expression of her innate desire to help others. After graduating, Doreen found work as a physical therapist in California’s Bay Area.

Also living in the Bay Area was a young man named William Michael Dennis, who worked in the local Lockheed factory. Dennis was not particularly confident, due in part to his stutter caused by significant hearing loss that occurred in his childhood.

This hearing loss also forced Dennis to use hearing aids that were nowhere near as sleek and compact as today’s models. According to later records, Dennis struggled with depression, and he formerly confided in a psychiatrist that he had issues with finding and maintaining relationships.

Relationship with William Michael Dennis

Shortly after Doreen started working, she met Dennis. Their relationship, though rocky at times early on, was a whirlwind romance. After dating for only a few months, Doreen and Dennis were married.

In 1976, Doreen gave birth to their son, Paul Dennis. Unfortunately, the stress of raising a child deepened already existing issues in Doreen and Dennis’s relationship, and the pair divorced in 1977. Doreen earned primary custody of Paul, but Dennis retained visitation rights.

After the split, Dennis held a grudge against Doreen for what he viewed as her breaking up their family. On the other hand, Doreen was content to move on with her life.

Marriage to Charles Erbert

After her divorce from William Dennis, Doreen fell in love with and married Charles Erbert. In 1979, Charles and Doreen welcomed a daughter, Deanna. For a while, life was great for Doreen. She was happily in love with her husband and had built a beautiful, blended family. Sadly, this happiness would be short-lived.

A Tragic Accident

In February 1980, tragedy struck the Erbert home.

Three-year-old Paul fell into the pool at the house after climbing through the fence the Erberts had put around the pool to keep the children safe. Although Doreen was at home, she did not expect Paul to be able to access the pool unsupervised, so she did not discover that he had fallen in until it was too late.

Paul was rescued from the pool and transported to the hospital, where he remained on life support for a week. Tragically, Paul was unable to recover from his injuries, and a few days after the respirator was removed, he passed away.

Dennis, who already held a grudge against Doreen, was infuriated. He blamed Doreen and Charles for Paul’s death, believing that Doreen should have been more responsible in looking after their son.

Stricken with grief and desperate to blame his ex-wife, Dennis filed a wrongful death suit against the Erberts. That suit went to trial in March of 1982, just over two years after Paul’s death. The jury sided with the Erberts, believing nobody was to blame for Paul’s death, which they agreed was a tragic accident.

Downward Spiral

After the trial concluded and with no shared custody agreement tying Doreen to her ex-husband, the Erberts cut off contact with Dennis. This kicked off a substantial downward spiral in Dennis’ life, one from which he would never recover.

Dennis lost his previous position at Lockheed Martin and was forced to accept a demotion or lose his job altogether. His mental health continued to worsen, with his grudge toward Doreen festering into a consuming hatred. He blamed Doreen for destroying his family, taking away the only stable romantic relationship he’d ever had, and, in his mind, murdering their son.

While Dennis sank into hostility, Doreen did her best to move on with life. A few years after Paul’s death, Doreen and Charles decided they were ready to start trying to have another baby. Tragedy continued to follow Doreen, and she suffered through two miscarriages. Finally, in 1984, Doreen and Charles learned they would be welcoming a healthy baby boy in November.

Halloween 1984

On October 31st, 1984, Doreen was 8 months pregnant with her son, who was due to arrive in a few weeks. Despite being heavily pregnant, Doreen wanted to give 5-year-old Deanna a fun and memorable Halloween, so she took her out trick-or-treating.

Charles stayed home, handing out candy to trick-or-treaters. When Doreen and Deanna returned home, Charles told Doreen they were running out of candy and that he needed to get more. He left the house for a mere 15 minutes, picking up some candy and swinging by the liquor store.

In that short time, the Erbert family’s lives would be shattered in a horrific act of brutality.

Around 9 p.m., just after Charles had left, Doreen and Deanna heard a loud knock at their front door. This was not a playful knock of a child asking for candy. Deanna vividly recalls the sound of this knock being more aggressive than expected. Still, Doreen went to the door and opened it.

When Kenneth Lindstrand burst into the upscale apartment lobby and collapsed onto the floor, many of the party guests thought it was a prank or a skit. After all, they were at a Halloween party and most of the 50 or so guests were wearing costumes. The music continued to play, and the guests kept dancing.

As one guest put it later, “It looked to everyone like a skit. When the man fell down and was moving and mumbling on the floor we all thought, gee, this guy is really putting it on.” When one of the guests noticed blood coming from Lindstrand’s mouth, another one told her, “It must be a capsule.”

Only after a guest checked on Lindstrand did they realize that this was no skit. “He had no pulse. This man is dead.” After that, “There was just quiet, shock, and disbelief.”

Police were called to the Valley Country Club apartment building at 1535 Weddington Street in Van Nuys, California, where the victim, 32-year-old business directory publisher Kenneth A. Lindstrand, was pronounced dead.

Investigation

The Halloween party, which took place late Saturday night into early Sunday, October 29, 1967, at the Valley Country Club Apartments, was described as a “bring-your-own-bottle” type that also featured a band.

According to some of the guests who were questioned, Lindstrand, who lived across the street from the apartments, arrived at the party alone around 1:00 a.m. They said that he was one of the few guests who was not wearing a costume.

Lindstrand reportedly danced with several guests and was allegedly sitting with a young woman on the couch in the lobby when he was approached by another guest who was also not wearing a costume. The two spoke briefly, and Lindstrand followed the man outside.

According to witnesses, he did not appear to know the man. Moments later, there were three gunshots. Lindstrand staggered back into the party, shot twice. A guest named Bruce Cane recalled seeing a stocky man carrying a gun follow Lindstrand into the lobby; however, he, like the other guests, believed that they were watching a skit. He said that the gun looked like a toy. Meanwhile, the man quickly slipped away.

Days later, the murder weapon was found after a woman called the police to report that she had found a pistol in her front lawn. The caller lived about half a mile from the apartment building.

Despite this finding and the number of guests present at the party (initial articles put the number around 50, while subsequent articles mention 100), investigators did not have much else to go on. There was no solid description of the assailant.

Arrests

A year and a half later, on April 25, 1969, three men were arrested in connection with Kenneth Lindstrand’s murder. The three men, all auto salesmen, were 25-year-old James D. Frageman, 33-year-old Bartholomew J. Giordano, and 34-year-old Jack Gentry Stearns.

Though detectives did not give specifics, they indicated that thorough questioning of Lindstrand’s friends and business associates had led to the arrests. A week later, Frageman and Giordano were released after the district attorney’s office decided that there was insufficient evidence to hold them.

Jack Stearns, however, remained locked up. He was placed in a police lineup, where several witnesses identified him as the shooter. Stearns was indicted and charged with first-degree murder.

Trial

At Stearns’ trial in September 1969, the prosecution alleged that the motive for Lindstrand’s murder stemmed from jealousy. It was learned that one of the women who Linstrand danced with at the party was Stearns’ wife, Maria.

One of the state’s witnesses, James Frageman, who had initially been arrested along with Giordano and Stearns, would testify that he overheard Stearns say, “I’m gonna’ go home and get my gun” after seeing his wife dancing with Lindstrand. He would go on to say that he later overheard Maria sobbing to Stearns, saying, “you killed a guy.”

Frageman said that Stearns made incriminating statements to him about the killing and also threatened him and Giordano.

Meanwhile, Stearns claimed that Frageman and Giordano had set him up. His defense contended that Lindstrand was involved in loan sharking and that his murder may be connected to organized crime.

They pointed to a mobster named Tony Altamura, who was murdered in Miami, Florida, and had a $10,000 check on his person drawn from Lindstrand’s bank account. Also, several days after Lindstrand’s murder, more than $100,000 in cash was found in safety deposit boxes that Lindstrand had rented.

Despite the doubts raised, Jack Stearns was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.

Conviction Reversed

In August 1970, the California State Court of Appeals reversed Stearns’ conviction and life sentence on the grounds of improper jury instructions and an improper police lineup that was used to identify him.

The court ruled that the lineup was biased because it did not contain any other men who resembled Stearns.

Stearns’ second trial in June 1972 ended in a hung jury. After this, Stearns agreed to a plea bargain in which he pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and was placed on probation for a period of three years.
