Alexander Fedorovich Taran was a beekeeper from Alexandrovskoye, in Russia's Stavropol Krai, who between 2002 and 2005 carried out a series of shootings that killed three men and wounded two more. He acted, prosecutors said, to avenge his two children, a daughter and a son, whom he buried seven years apart.

Caught in 2008, Taran was acquitted at his first trial and later convicted at a second. Russian newspapers came to refer to him as "the Voroshilov Sharpshooter" and "the Stavropol Avenger." This is his story.

Who was Alexander Taran?

Alexander Fedorovich Taran was born on June 28, 1951, in the village of Alexandrovskoye, a rural farming district in Stavropol Krai, southern Russia. It was a quiet community where families made their living through agriculture and manual work. Those who knew Taran described a man who was calm, patient, and dependable, not prone to seeking attention or trouble.

Like most young Soviet men, Taran served in the army after reaching adulthood; the discipline he acquired there remained with him. After his time in the military, Taran returned home, where he worked at the local state farm, or sovkhoz. Over the years, he worked as a zoo technician caring for animals, a fireman, and an inspector. Coworkers remembered someone who rarely complained and was diligent in his work.

When the Soviet Union collapsed in the early 1990s and the state farms closed or reorganized, Taran adapted. Rather than leave the village, he started keeping bees, selling honey and later sunflower oil. It was independent work that suited a man who liked working with his hands.

Taran married a woman named Nadezhda, and together they built a home in Alexandrovskoye and raised two children. Natalia, born in 1974, and Vladimir, born in 1977.

Family Tragedy

Alexander Taran’s seemingly peaceful life would be upended by a series of tragic events. The first of these involved his oldest child, Natalia. She became involved with a young man who was using drugs, and soon became addicted herself. Though her parents tried to help, they were ultimately unable to reach her, and in June 1994, Natalia suffered a severe overdose and was rushed to a hospital in Stavropol Krai in critical condition.

While she was receiving treatment, Natalia suffered complications — allegedly a severe allergic reaction to an injection she received — and died in the hospital. She was just 20 years old.

Taran refused to accept his daughter’s death as a tragic accident. He became convinced that the negligence of the hospital staff directly contributed to Natalia’s death. He focused his anger on the doctor on duty in intensive care, a man named Konoplyankin, who, according to some accounts, had a history of drinking on the job.

Taran took the hospital to court, hoping they would see things as he did. However, the court ultimately cleared Konoplyankin, and no one was held responsible for Natalia's death. Those close to Taran later said he never accepted the verdict and often spoke of how powerless he felt against the system.

Natalia's death broke the family as well as her father's heart. About a year later, Nadezhda left Russia to work in Greece, where reports say she found work caring for the elderly. The move was meant to bring in money, but it also separated the couple during the darkest period of their lives. Nadezhda stayed in Greece for good and, by several accounts, began a new relationship there; she and Taran never formally divorced, but their marriage was effectively over.

Taran remained in Alexandrovskoye, keeping his bees and caring for their surviving child, Vladimir. He found some companionship with a local woman identified in Russian true-crime accounts as Natalia Zadorozhnaya, who had a son, Ivan, from an earlier relationship. Yet despite this, Taran grew increasingly isolated, spending less time with others and more time alone.

For seven years, Taran tried to hold on to what was left of his family, watching with worry as Vladimir struggled with alcohol. He often enlisted his son to help him at the apiary, hoping work and responsibility would steady him. Yet it wouldn’t be enough.

In October 2001, during the village's annual "Village Day" celebration, Vladimir went to a local disco. Late that night, a fight broke out, and in the chaos Vladimir was killed. Witnesses described a large drunken brawl involving several people; by some accounts, he was fatally injured during the struggle, and there may have been no single person who struck the fatal blow. Seven years after burying his daughter, Taran buried his only son.

Authorities opened an investigation and arrested a suspect, Izhayev, a nephew of local businessman Magomed Erkenov. But Izhayev was released, no one was charged, and investigators concluded the death resulted from a mass drunken brawl rather than a targeted attack. The case was eventually closed without a conviction.

For Taran, this was unacceptable. He became convinced that Erkenov, a man with money and connections, had used his influence to shield his nephew. Though this was never proven, in Taran’s mind, the system had failed him once again.

Campaign of Revenge

By the end of 2002, Taran had stopped expecting anything from the justice system. Investigators later alleged that it was around this time he began planning revenge against the people he blamed for destroying his family or for helping the guilty escape. They said he traveled to Mozdok, in the North Caucasus, and illegally obtained two AK-47 rifles, fitting them with homemade suppressors.

The first incident came on New Year's Eve, December 31, 2002. Just fifteen minutes into the new year, someone shattered the windows of Magomed Erkenov's home with automatic gunfire. No one was hurt, and the shooter vanished; with little evidence, police treated it as hooliganism.

Months later, on May 21, 2003, Taran confronted Erkenov directly, shooting him at point-blank range at the gate of his own house. Erkenov was struck multiple times and died at the scene. Investigators had no idea who the gunman was or that more attacks would soon follow.

The Erkenov killing left investigators searching for a motive — possible business disputes or personal feuds — and finding none. The gunman had struck with precision and left almost no clues behind.

Just over three months later, on September 5, 2003, Taran turned to Dr. Sergey Gresev, head physician of the district hospital where Natalia had died in 1994. He fired twice through the kitchen window; one bullet hit the doctor in the shoulder. Gresev survived after a long recovery but was left permanently disabled.

Six weeks after that, on October 20, 2003, Taran shot Oleg Tanchik, a 38-year-old senior officer who worked in economic crimes. Tanchik was hit multiple times outside his home and did not survive.

By now, fear had spread through the district. On June 21, 2004, Taran killed again. Vladimir Shtan, head of the Aleksandrovsky district's criminal investigations division, was gunned down at his own gate just as Erkenov had been. Shtan was now the third person killed.

After the murder of Shtan, the shootings stopped for more than a year, and people wondered whether the gunman had disappeared. Then, on November 27, 2005, Andrei Radchenko, the district's traffic-police commander, became the next target.

Five months earlier, Radchenko had pulled over Taran's aging Volga; when Taran refused a sobriety test, his car was impounded. Prosecutors later argued that this landed Radchenko on Taran's list. Radchenko was seriously wounded but survived.

Investigation

For more than two years, a series of carefully planned shootings had left three dead and two wounded. Eventually, investigators came to suspect the attacks were connected. The patterns were similar: the gunman appeared without warning, fired with precision, and vanished.

There were no fingerprints, no eyewitnesses, and no known motive tying the victims together. Detectives examined potential organized crime ties, business disputes, corruption, and the possibility of a shooter with military training, eventually reaching a dead end each time.

Then, in 2008, an unexpected break in the case occurred. A villager who had been walking through woods near Taran's property found something wrapped in an old bathrobe: an AK-47 with a homemade suppressor. Ballistics linked it to several of the shootings.

Because the suppressor had been made by hand, investigators traced it to a local metalworker, who recognized his own work and remembered that Alexander Taran had ordered it, having claimed he needed a nozzle for a gas burner, the kind of tool a beekeeper might use to smoke his hives. It was a plausible explanation, and it gave police their first direct link.

Upon a search of Taran's property, authorities recovered a homemade gas pistol; though not tied to the shootings, it kept their focus fixed on him. A strand of hair on one of the rifles was matched to Taran, and a friend of his came forward with a second AK-47 and admitted he had been holding it for Taran.

Forensic analysis tied both weapons to the shootings. According to later accounts, Taran's stepson, Ivan, also told investigators that Taran had test-fired one of the rifles at an old quarry; Taran reportedly never forgave him for this betrayal.

Conviction

Following his arrest, the 57-year-old beekeeper initially confessed, admitting the attacks were driven by his belief that the justice system had failed him after his children's deaths. Later, though, he stopped cooperating, withdrew his confession, and maintained his innocence; his lawyers challenged the legality of how the confession had been obtained.

The case went before a jury at the Stavropol Regional Court. Prosecutors presented the two AK-47 rifles and the hand-made suppressor, the metalworker's testimony, the hair evidence, and presented the motive for the attacks, arguing every victim was in some way connected back to the deaths of Taran's children or the investigations that followed.

The defense countered that the case rested on assumptions rather than proof, that no eyewitness had ever seen Taran shoot anyone, and that suspicion alone was not enough.

On May 29, 2009, the jury acquitted him. The verdict stunned investigators and prosecutors, who quickly appealed. On September 3, 2009, the Supreme Court of Russia ruled that procedural errors had marred the trial, overturned the acquittal, and ordered a retrial.

On December 4, 2009, a second jury convicted Taran, and on December 9, he was sentenced to 23 years in a strict-regime penal colony and ordered to pay 1,050,000 rubles to the surviving victims' families. Taran never admitted guilt; he and his lawyer, Vyacheslav Savin, appealed, but on March 16, 2010, the Supreme Court upheld the conviction.

Aftermath

After Alexander Taran’s story was widely publicized, newspapers began referring to him as "The Stavropol Avenger," and, more enduringly, "The Voroshilov Sharpshooter," after the vengeful pensioner in the 1999 Russian film Voroshilov Sharpshooter, whose hero takes justice into his own hands when the law fails his family.

Senator Vladimir Lukin condemned what Taran had done but warned that in a country where trust in the courts and police was low and corruption real, more "Voroshilov Sharpshooters" would appear unless changes in the justice system were made.

Alexander Taran remains in custody, serving the sentence handed down in 2009; his name is still one of the most glaring examples of what can happen when personal tragedy, perceived injustice, and revenge become entangled together after faith in the system runs out.

Background

The March 1981 killing of Klaus Grabowski by Marianne Bachmeier is one of the most notable and high-profile instances of vigilantism in the history of West Germany. The incident drew considerable attention due to the sensational and shocking nature of the crime.

Grabowski, a convicted sex offender, was on trial for the abduction, assault, and murder of Bachmeier’s 7-year-old daughter, Anna. On the third day of the trial, Bachmeier shot Grabowski to death in front of a stunned courtroom. She would later serve three years in prison for her actions.

Opinions differed as to whether the punishment was too lenient or too harsh considering the circumstances. Many sympathized with the grieving mother and felt that justice had been done. More than 45 years later, the case remains relevant to understanding vigilante justice.

A Troubled Childhood

Born on June 3, 1950, Marianne Bachmeier had a difficult childhood from the very beginning. After World War II, her parents had fled from East Prussia to the small town of Sarstedt near Hildesheim in Lower Saxony, West Germany, where Marianne was raised. Marianne’s father had reportedly served in the Waffen-SS.

Marianne was raised in a devout, conservative, and deeply religious home. Her father was a stern man and a heavy drinker who spent more time at the local bar than at home. She would later remember the household as deeply unhappy — a tension that later ended in her parents' divorce.

When Marianne was a teen, her mother remarried. Her new stepfather was strict and authoritative, and the constant arguments between them eventually led her mother to put Marianne out of the house.

In 1966, at sixteen, Marianne became pregnant. Knowing she couldn't raise a child, she placed the baby for adoption. Two years later, at eighteen, she became pregnant by her boyfriend; she later said she was also raped shortly before the birth of the second baby. Again, she placed the child up for adoption. Both children found homes with other families.

Struggling Mother

In her early twenties, Marianne was working at a pub called Tipasa in Lübeck and dating the manager. At 22, she became pregnant for the third time. This time she chose to keep the baby. Her daughter, Anna, was born on November 14, 1972.

Marianne struggled to raise Anna alone, often having to bring her to the pub while she worked. Because of her lack of support, Anna was treated more like an adult than a child by her mother and was frequently left to care for herself while Marianne worked. According to friends of Marianne, Anna was a vibrant child but, due to circumstances, she, like her mother, had an unhappy and turbulent childhood.

Murder of Anna Bachmeier

On May 5, 1980, after an argument with her mother, seven-year-old Anna decided to skip school. At some point that day, she was abducted by Klaus Grabowski, a 35-year-old butcher who lived nearby. Anna was familiar with Grabowski, having visited him before to play with his cats.

Grabowski held her at his home for several hours and sexually assaulted her, then strangled her with a pair of his fiancée's tights. Afterward, he bound her body, packed it into a box, and left it on the shore of a canal.

Grabowski was already a convicted sex offender who had previously served time for assaulting two girls. In 1976, Grabowski agreed to chemical castration. However, he later attempted to reverse the procedure through the use of hormone treatment.

Grabowski’s fiancée turned him in to police. After his arrest, Grabowski tried to shift the blame onto Anna, claiming he had not abused her and that Anna had tried to extort money from him to keep quiet; he said he killed her because he feared returning to prison.

Courtroom Killing

On the third day of Grabowski’s trial, March 6, 1981, Marianne smuggled a .22-caliber Beretta pistol into Room 157 of the Lübeck District Court. As Grabowski waited, she drew the weapon and fired between six and eight shots. Six rounds struck Grabowski, killing him instantly.

Bachmeier then lowered the gun and was arrested without resistance. Officers later testified they heard her say she had wanted to face him: "Unfortunately, I only got the pig from behind." During a later court-ordered handwriting test, Bachmeier wrote, "I did it for you, Anna.”

The shooting became one of the most famous cases of vigilante justice in West German history. It drew intense media coverage, with television crews arriving from around the world. Public opinion split sharply: many saw a grieving mother who took justice into her own hands, and she received gifts and support while in custody; while some saw a dangerous vigilante who had defied the legal process.

To help cover her legal costs, Marianne sold her story to the news magazine Stern for 100,000 Deutsche marks (roughly $58,500). After Stern published her life story, which included the adoptions of her first two children, some readers began to question how blameless she had been, given the difficult life Anna had led.

Meanwhile, the West German public debated how Grabowski, a convicted child sex offender, had been permitted to reverse his voluntary chemical castration.

Trial and Sentencing

Bachmeier was first charged with premeditated murder. Prosecutors later reduced the charge to manslaughter, weighing her grief and mental state at the time of the killing. After 28 days of trial, she was convicted on March 2, 1983, of manslaughter and unlawful possession of a firearm.

The court accepted the defense argument that the act was not premeditated, though a subsequent documentary would later allege that Bachmeier rehearsed the shooting in the basement of the pub where she worked. She was sentenced to six years in prison and released on probation after serving three.

Aftermath

After her release, Marianne married a teacher in 1985 and moved with him to Lagos, Nigeria, where he taught at a German school. The couple divorced in 1990, and Marianne moved to Sicily, working as an aide in a Palermo hospice. While there, she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and returned to Germany.

In 1994, thirteen years after the shooting, she gave a radio interview and published her autobiography. On September 21, 1995, she appeared on the German talk show Fliege and said she had shot Grabowski to stop him from spreading lies about Anna.

Marianne Bachmeier died on September 17, 1996, at age 46, of pancreatic cancer in a Lübeck hospital. To her dying day, Marianne Bachmeier expressed no remorse. She was buried beside her daughter, Anna, in Burgtor Cemetery in Lübeck.

Over the decades, the case has inspired numerous plays, films, documentaries, and books. Her story is one that resonates with many people: a grieving mother who sought justice for her daughter no matter what it cost her.

Background

The killing of Jeffrey Doucet by Gary Plauché in March 1984 is a prime example of how an otherwise upstanding and law-abiding individual could be driven to take the law into his own hands.

When Plauché learned that his son, Jody, had been sexually abused and abducted by a man he trusted, the anger, betrayal, and grief pushed him over the edge and led him to shoot his son’s abuser inside the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport as live news cameras were rolling.

In the aftermath of the shooting, many people sympathized with Gary. Despite the shocking nature of the crime, many could understand the motivation behind it. The trial and subsequent court decision were also controversial and resulted in the case becoming one of the most notable examples of American vigilante justice.

Who was Gary Plauché?

Gary Plauché was born on November 10, 1945, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. After a stint in the U.S. Air Force, where he reached the rank of Staff Sergeant, he returned to civilian life and worked as an equipment salesman and, at one point, as a cameraman for a local television station — a detail that would take on a grim irony the night his own violent act was broadcast on the news.

He was, by all accounts, an ordinary father until February 1984.

Ultimate Betrayal

In 1983, Gary’s 11-year-old son, Jody, began taking karate lessons from a 25-year-old instructor named Jeffery Doucet. Doucet became a close and trusted friend of the family; Jody once described him as "all of our best friends." However, Doucet horrifically betrayed that trust when he began sexually abusing Jody. The abuse continued in secret until one fateful day in February 1984.

On February 14, 1984, Doucet picked Jody up, telling the boy's mother, June, they would be back shortly. Instead, Doucet took Jody across the country to a motel in Anaheim, California, where — according to Jody's later account — the abuse that had reportedly gone on for months continued.

Doucet's plan included shaving his beard and changing Jody's appearance to evade law enforcement while hiding their true identities. The plan was to pass Jody off as Doucet's son and conceal his tracks.

Jody, the subject of a nationwide search, was found after Doucet allowed him to place a collect call to his mother. California police arrested Doucet without incident on February 29, 1984, and Jody was returned home to Louisiana on March 1.

Shooting of Jeffrey Doucet

For Gary Plauché, learning the details of what his son had endured was emotionally devastating. The horrifying truth of Jody's sexual abuse left Plauché in a state of unimaginable horror. His world was shattered, and the pursuit of justice would soon become his singular focus.

In the days that followed, a former colleague from WBRZ passed along a critical piece of information: the time Doucet would be flown back to Baton Rouge to face charges. On the evening of March 16, 1984, as officers escorted a handcuffed Doucet through Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport, Plauché waited at a bank of payphones, his face hidden by a baseball cap and sunglasses, pretending to make a call.

A WBRZ news crew had positioned itself to film Doucet's arrival. As he passed, Plauché drew a small handgun and fired a single shot into the side of Doucet's head at point-blank range. The camera caught all of it live. As officers wrestled Plauché down — several of them knew him — one can be heard asking, "Why, Gary, why?"

After slipping into a coma, Doucet died the following day.

Legal Proceedings

Plauché was initially charged with second-degree murder, but the community rallied around him. Strangers on the street, patrons of the bar where he had spent his darkest days, and a local riverboat captain named Murray Curry who helped raise a defense fund. Much of the public had, as one account put it, already acquitted him in their hearts.

After agreeing to a plea bargain, Plauché pleaded no contest to a reduced charge of manslaughter. Citing psychiatric testimony that Plauché had been temporarily unable to tell right from wrong, and reasoning that prison "would not help anyone" and that Plauché posed virtually no risk of reoffending, the judge handed down a seven-year suspended sentence, five years of probation, and 300 hours of community service.

He would serve no jail time. This decision shocked some and pleased others, further fueling the ongoing debate about whether Plauché was a hero or a reckless vigilante.

Aftermath

Gary Plauché lived the remainder of his life quietly out of the public eye. He suffered strokes in his later years and passed away in 2014 at age 68. His obituary remembered a man who found beauty in life, made those around him laugh, and was, to many, a hero.

Jody Plauché took a different path. Rather than let the darkest days of his childhood define him, he became a sexual-assault counselor and abuse-prevention speaker, worked with anti-violence programs, and in 2019 published a memoir, Why, Gary, Why? The Jody Plauché Story. The book helps parents protect their children and shows other survivors that they too can move forward.

Around the 40th anniversary of the shooting in 2024, Jody spoke publicly again about his father calling him, without hesitation, "The greatest dad of all time."

The extraordinary case of Gary Plauché is one that many people can relate to. A loving father who was heartbroken by the betrayal and systematic abuse of his son did what he believed was necessary at the time.

Though his actions were certainly outside the boundaries of the law, the outpouring of sympathy and public support that followed demonstrated that when it comes to protecting one’s children, one must do what is necessary, no matter the cost.

Background

For years, the shadow of Ken McElroy loomed large over the tiny town of Skidmore, located in northwest Missouri. McElroy was a violent bully and criminal who had been indicted more than 20 times over the years for various crimes, yet somehow he always managed to go free.

Then one hot July day in 1981, McElroy’s long campaign of fear and intimidation came to a violent end as he was gunned down while sitting in his pickup truck. The shooting happened in front of dozens of people, and yet, no one claimed to have seen anything. Not one of the witnesses would identify the shooters. Today, the murder of Ken McElroy remains unsolved.

The Town Bully

Ken Rex McElroy was born on June 16, 1934, the fifteenth of sixteen children. His parents, Tony and Mabel, were poor tenant farmers who moved from place to place between Kansas and the Ozarks before eventually settling outside Skidmore, Missouri. The town is located in the northwest corner of Missouri and, at the time, had a population of fewer than 500 residents.

By the time Ken was a teenager, he had already developed a nasty reputation that would follow him for the rest of his life. He dropped out of school at age 15, while in the eighth grade, and quickly became known in the area as a cattle rustler, thief, and troublemaker.

Throughout his life, McElroy was accused of dozens of serious crimes. These accusations included assault, child molestation, statutory rape, arson, animal cruelty, hog and cattle rustling, burglary, and theft involving grain, gasoline, alcohol, antiques, and livestock. Over the years, McElroy was indicted 21 times. Yet he escaped conviction every time but the last.

This became a major part of his legend in Skidmore. It was not just that McElroy was accused of crime after crime. It was that, no matter how serious the accusation, he always seemed to walk away free.

Witnesses became afraid. Victims hesitated. People changed their stories. Some refused to testify altogether. Many said this was because McElroy intimidated them. He was known to follow people, park outside their homes, and watch them for hours. To the people of Skidmore, the message was clear: if you crossed Ken McElroy, he would not forget it.

Reign of Fear

By the 1970s, McElroy’s name had become synonymous with fear in Nodaway County. He was often armed, openly confrontational, and quick to make threats. If someone accused him, he intimidated them. If someone testified, he followed them. If the law came after him, the case somehow collapsed.

McElroy had at least 17 children by multiple wives and other young women and girls, but the sheer number of children was less important than the pattern that surrounded his life. His relationships, his disputes, and his criminal accusations all seemed to carry the same theme: power through fear. And for more than two decades, that fear worked. Many Skidmore residents believed the courts had become useless against him.

One of the darkest parts of McElroy’s life involved Trena McCloud, who would later become his last wife. McElroy met Trena when she was only 12 years old and in the eighth grade. He was 35. What followed was a deeply disturbing pattern of abuse, coercion, and intimidation.

According to accounts of the case, McElroy raped Trena repeatedly. When her parents opposed the relationship, McElroy allegedly terrorized the family into submission. The McCloud family’s home was burned down, and their dog was shot.

Trena became pregnant at 14. After leaving school in the ninth grade, she moved into the home McElroy shared with his third wife, Alice. McElroy later divorced Alice and married Trena. Many believed the marriage was a way for him to avoid statutory rape charges, since Trena was the key witness in the case against him.

In June 1973, McElroy was indicted on charges of arson, assault, and statutory rape. He was arrested, booked, arraigned, and then released on $2,500 bail. For Trena and her baby, however, freedom from McElroy was still out of reach. They were placed in foster care at a home in Maryville, Missouri, but McElroy soon found them.

He reportedly sat outside the foster home for hours, staring at the house and making his presence impossible to ignore. Then came one of the most chilling threats connected to the entire case: McElroy allegedly told the foster family he would trade “girl for girl” to get his child back, because he knew where their biological daughter went to school and which bus route she took.

Additional charges were filed against him, but once again, this did little to slow McElroy’s threats and intimidation. Even after Trena gave birth, McElroy’s control over her did not stop. Just sixteen days after the baby was born, Trena and Alice ran to Trena’s parents’ home, hoping to get away from him. But according to court records, McElroy tracked them down and brought them back. Later, while the McClouds were away, their home was allegedly set on fire again, and their new dog was shot.

For many in Skidmore, the McCloud family’s suffering was another reminder of what happened when anyone tried to stand up to Ken McElroy.

A Pattern of Violence

On July 27, 1976, Romaine Henry, a farmer from Skidmore, claimed McElroy shot him twice with a shotgun after Henry confronted him for firing weapons on his property. McElroy was later charged with assault with intent to kill. The accusation was serious. Henry had been shot, and he named McElroy as the person responsible.

As the case dragged on, Henry said McElroy parked outside his home at least 100 times before trial. It was the kind of intimidation people in Skidmore had come to expect.

At trial, McElroy denied being at the scene. Two raccoon hunters testified that they were with him away from Henry’s property on the day of the shooting. McElroy’s attorney, Richard Gene McFadin, focused heavily on Henry’s credibility. Under questioning, Henry was forced to admit that he had concealed a petty criminal conviction from more than three decades earlier. In the end, McElroy walked free.

Reports later claimed that McElroy had stalked and intimidated members of the jury before the trial. It was also reported that a barn owned by the judge was burned down. Whether every rumor was true or not, the effect was the same. The people of Skidmore believed that McElroy had once again escaped accountability, and that belief made him seem even more untouchable.

The incident that finally brought Skidmore to its breaking point began in 1980 at a local grocery store owned by Ernest “Bo” Bowenkamp and his wife, Lois. Bo Bowenkamp was 70 years old. He and Lois were ordinary small-town business owners, the kind of people who should have been able to spend their later years running their store in peace. Instead, they became the center of the conflict that would eventually lead to McElroy’s death.

The trouble reportedly began when one of McElroy’s daughters got into an argument with a store clerk named Evelyn Sumy. The girl was allegedly accused of trying to steal candy. It was a small incident, the kind of thing that might have ended with a warning in any other town. But with Ken McElroy, small disputes rarely stayed small.

McElroy began stalking and harassing the Bowenkamp family. Eventually, he confronted Bo Bowenkamp in the back of the store while holding a shotgun. During the confrontation, McElroy shot Bowenkamp in the neck. Miraculously, Bo survived. This time, it seemed that McElroy had finally gone too far.

He was arrested and charged with first-degree assault, a charge that could have carried a life sentence. For a town that had watched him escape serious punishment again and again, the Bowenkamp case looked like the moment the system might finally work.

In June 1981, McElroy was convicted of second-degree assault. He was sentenced to two years in prison. For Skidmore, the conviction should have brought relief. Instead, it brought fear. McElroy was released on bond pending appeal.

Despite the conviction, McElroy did not fade into the background. If anything, he carried himself as though nothing had changed — as though he still believed no one had the power to stop him. On June 30, 1981, McElroy appeared at the D&G Tavern, a local bar in Skidmore. He was armed with an M1 Garand rifle with a bayonet attached. While there, he reportedly threatened Bo Bowenkamp.

To the people in town, this was not just another ugly scene. It was a warning. McElroy had been convicted of shooting a 70-year-old grocer in the neck, had been released on bond, and was now allegedly threatening the same man again. The question hanging over Skidmore was no longer whether McElroy was dangerous. That had long been answered.

The question now was whether anyone would stop him before someone else was hurt or killed.

Town Meeting

On July 10, 1981, many Skidmore residents were expecting McElroy to appear in court again — this time for a hearing to revoke the bond that had kept him free since the D&G Tavern incident. But when the court date arrived, they learned that McElroy’s attorney had won a continuance, and the hearing had been rescheduled. For a town already exhausted by years of threats, delays, and failed prosecutions, the news felt like yet another setback. Frustrated and frightened, residents gathered at the Legion Hall to discuss what could be done.

Nodaway County Sheriff Danny Estes attended the meeting and reportedly advised the citizens not to confront McElroy directly. He suggested they consider forming a neighborhood watch. But for many people in Skidmore, that answer must have felt painfully hollow. They had already seen the courts fail them. They had seen witnesses grow too afraid to speak.

Soon word spread that McElroy and his wife, Trena, were at the D&G Tavern. Many of the people at the meeting began making their way toward the tavern. The place filled with townspeople. McElroy sat inside drinking. Eventually, he bought a six-pack of beer, left the bar, and climbed into his red pickup truck with Trena beside him.

What happened next would forever be remembered in Skidmore.

The Killing of Ken McElroy

As McElroy sat in his truck, shots rang out. McElroy was hit twice by two different-sized bullets. The use of different types of ammunition suggested that at least two firearms were involved. Some accounts described gunfire coming from different directions. Trena was sitting beside him when the shooting began. She scrambled from the truck, screaming, covered in blood. A man helped her away from the vehicle.

When it was over, Ken McElroy was dead. There were dozens of people present. Estimates place the number of potential witnesses somewhere between 30 and 46. It was broad daylight. This was not a hidden murder in a dark alley. It happened on the main street of a small town where everyone knew everyone.

And yet, when investigators began to ask questions, the answer was silence. Nobody saw the shooter. Nobody could identify the gunmen. Nobody admitted knowing anything. And nobody had bothered to call for help.

After years of living under McElroy’s shadow, Skidmore had closed ranks. Whether out of fear, loyalty, relief, or a shared belief that justice had already been served, the town refused to turn in his killers.

Wall of Silence

Despite the number of witnesses present at the time of the shooting, the case remained unsolved. It was confirmation that the residents of Skidmore both feared and detested McElroy, and that he had finally gotten what was coming to him.

Trena McElroy later accused Del Clement of being one of the shooters. However, Clement was never charged, and he denied any involvement until his death in 2009. Prosecutors declined to press charges, and an extensive federal investigation also failed to produce an indictment.

Many believed the residents had simply decided that the system had failed them for too long, and that it was up to them to finally put an end to McElroy’s reign of terror. Missouri-based journalist Steve Booher later described the sentiment of many townspeople in a simple phrase: “He needed killing.”

Aftermath

Ken McElroy was buried at Memorial Park Cemetery in St. Joseph, Missouri. But his death did not end the controversy.

On July 9, 1984, Trena McElroy filed a $5 million wrongful death lawsuit. The lawsuit named the Town of Skidmore, Nodaway County, Sheriff Danny Estes, Skidmore Mayor Steve Peters, and Del Clement, the man Trena accused of being involved in the shooting.

The suit was settled out of court for $17,600. No one admitted guilt. The settlement was reportedly made to avoid the cost of continued legal fees. Trena later remarried and moved to Lebanon, Missouri. She died of cancer on January 24, 2012.

As for Skidmore, the town would never fully escape the shadow of the McElroy case. The story has been revisited again and again: in Harry N. MacLean’s Edgar Award-winning 1988 book In Broad Daylight and the 1991 television film it inspired, in the 2019 documentary series No One Saw a Thing, and most recently in KENREX, the Olivier Award-winning one-man play that opened in New York in April 2026. But what continues to fascinate people is not just the killing itself — it is what the case reveals about fear, justice, silence, and what can happen when a community feels the law has failed them.

More than four decades later, the death of Ken McElroy remains one of the most infamous alleged acts of vigilante justice in American history.

His story has been told and retold because it does not fit neatly into a simple moral category. McElroy was not an innocent man randomly gunned down. He was a convicted assailant and a man accused of a long history of violence, intimidation, and abuse. At the same time, he was also a murder victim, killed in public by people who were never brought before a court.

That is what makes the case so unsettling.

It is not just a story about a criminal. It is not just a story about a killing. It is a story about a town pushed so far that violence became its final answer. Ken McElroy was known as “the town bully,” but by the end, that title no longer belonged only to him. The real bully in Skidmore may have been fear itself. Fear of McElroy. Fear of retaliation. Fear that the courts would fail again. Fear that speaking up would only bring more violence.

To this day, no one has been charged with the killing of Ken Rex McElroy.

Background

In October 2025, former rock star turned convicted pedophile Ian Watkins was found dead at HM Prison Wakefield, where the disgraced former frontman was serving a 29-year sentence for numerous crimes against children. In total, four men have been charged in relation to Watkins’ death, including two inmates who have been charged with murder and weapons possession.

The troubling story of Ian Watkins highlights how he used his fame to manipulate fans and gain access to vulnerable children. It also shows a disturbing level of negligence by law enforcement agencies who could have stopped Watkins years before his eventual arrest had they only taken seriously the numerous tips they had received about his crimes.

Early Life and Rise to Fame

Ian David Karslake Watkins was born on July 30, 1977, in Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales. When Ian was around five years old, his father passed away. A few years later, his mother married a church minister, and the family moved to Pontypridd, another South Wales town.

After high school, Watkins attended the University of Wales, Newport, and graduated with a degree in graphic design. Beyond the classroom, he showed a strong interest in music — rock and metal bands, especially from the United States. He studied how they performed and connected with audiences; one group he later cited as a major influence was Faith No More.

Watkins worked as a graphic designer before finding success in music. — he would later use these skills to create artwork and merchandise for his music projects. — In the early 90s, Watkins, along with friends Lee Gaze and Mike Lewis, formed several short-lived bands. In the mid-1990s, Watkins played drums in a small local hardcore band called Public Disturbance. The group played modest venues and released its debut album in 1998.

While still a member of Public Disturbance, Watkins and Lee Gaze formed the band Lostprophets in 1997. In 1998, Watkins left Public Disturbance to focus exclusively on his new band. As lead singer and frontman, Watkins became the driving force behind the band.

The group began to gain recognition following the release of their debut album, The Fake Sound of Progress, in 2000, which reached a much wider audience when it was re-released in 2001. The band’s second album, Start Something (2004), propelled them into mainstream success. While Liberation Transmission (2006) reached number one on the UK Albums Chart, and The Betrayed (2010) and Weapons (2012) kept them touring internationally, playing packed venues and major festivals far beyond Wales.

With that success came a strong public image. Watkins was seen as confident, energetic, and bold — on stage and in interviews. Fans admired not just the music, but the personality leading it.

Warnings Ignored

Behind that image, though, concerns had already started to reach the authorities. In December 2008, Joanne Mjadzelics — a former girlfriend of Watkins — first reported him to police, telling officers about text messages in which Watkins described his desire to abuse children. An early investigation was closed for what was described as potentially “malicious.”

Mjadzelics kept going back — she would later face charges herself over material connected to Watkins, and be cleared of all of them in January 2015 after arguing she had been gathering evidence to expose him.

The pattern did not stop. Between 2008 and 2012, multiple reports reached authorities — claims that he was contacting underage girls online, that he possessed indecent images of children, and that he was encouraging others to participate in abuse. Some reports came from people who had seen the messages firsthand.

These failures were later officially documented: the Independent Police Complaints Commission found that officers failed multiple times between 2008 and 2012 to act on reports about Watkins, and a 2016 IPCC report recommended disciplinary proceedings against three South Wales Police detectives.

All the while, Watkins’ life continued without interruption. The band released music, toured, and kept its place in the industry. Fans continued to support him, unaware of what was happening behind the scenes.

Arrest and Charges

After receiving information that Watkins was smuggling cocaine and methamphetamine from Los Angeles to Wales, police arrested him on drug charges in June 2012. Watkins posted bail and was released. He was arrested again later that year in November on drug charges and an allegation that he possessed an obscene image of a child. He pleaded not guilty to this charge and was once again released on bail.

On November 14, 2012, Watkins performed what would be his final show with Lostprophets in Newport, Wales. The crowd that night saw the same energetic performer they had always known.

On December 17, 2012, Watkins was arrested for the third time that year — and this time investigators were building a full case. Police searched his home in Pontypridd, seizing computers, phones, and storage devices.

What investigators found included hundreds of indecent images and videos involving children; messages showing he had arranged and engaged in sexual activity involving minors; evidence he had attempted sexual acts against very young children; communications directing others to carry out abuse and record it; and proof he had filmed and stored some of it himself.

Two days later, on December 19, 2012, he was charged with multiple serious offenses, including the attempted rape of an 11-month-old child, sexual assault of a child, causing or inciting sexual activity with a child, and possession, creation, and distribution of indecent images of children.

Trial and Sentencing

Watkins denied the accusations for nearly a year, and a full trial was planned at Cardiff Crown Court. Then, on November 26, 2013, just before the jury was to be sworn in, he changed his pleas, admitting 13 offenses, including the attempted rape of a baby.

Watkins had not acted alone. Two young mothers — identified in court only as B and P, to protect the identities of their children — were convicted alongside him. The court heard that Watkins used his fame and influence to draw in young female fans and then manipulated them into offering up their own children. Messages presented in court showed him giving detailed instructions, watching abuse over video calls, and recording material himself.

In October 2013, the remaining members of Lostprophets announced the band's end, saying they had no knowledge of the situation before it became public. Concerts were canceled, and a band that had once filled arenas came to a sudden end.

On December 18, 2013, Watkins appeared before Justice John Royce at Cardiff Crown Court for sentencing. The judge's remarks — published by the judiciary — remain among the starkest on modern record:

"Those who have appeared in these Courts at the Bar or on the Bench over many years see and hear a large number of horrific cases. This case, however, breaks new ground… What you three did plumbed new depths of depravity."

Of Watkins himself, the judge concluded: "You are a deeply corrupting influence; you are highly manipulative; you are a sexual predator; you are dangerous."

Watkins received a 35-year extended sentence: 29 years in custody, followed by six years on extended license, with no parole eligibility until two-thirds of the custodial term had been served.

His co-defendants, B and P, received 14 and 17 years, respectively. Radio stations stopped playing the band's songs, projects were canceled, and the industry began a larger reckoning with how early warnings had gone unheeded.

Assault and Death

While incarcerated, Watkins was accused of grooming the mother of a two-year-old girl through a series of correspondence. He was returned to HM Prison Wakefield, where in 2019 he was given an additional 10-month sentence for possession of a cell phone. Watkins claimed that he was being forced to hold the phone for other inmates, but refused to give their names.

Watkins was reportedly extorted by numerous inmates for protection. Because he was being housed on a general population wing rather than a wing exclusively for sex offenders, his high profile and the nature of his crimes made him a target.

On August 5, 2023, Watkins was taken hostage by three inmates and stabbed, and was freed only after prison officers intervened roughly six hours later. His injuries were not life-threatening at the time, though he later claimed lasting damage.

Then, on the morning of October 11, 2025, Watkins was attacked in his cell. Paramedics were called to the prison after reports he had been stabbed in the neck; Watkins was pronounced dead at the scene. He was 48. An inquest opened at Wakefield Coroner's Court heard the post-mortem cause of death was an incision to the neck.

West Yorkshire Police charged two inmates with murder: Rashid "Rico" Gedel, 25, and Samuel Dodsworth, 43. Two more men, aged 23 and 39, were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder and bailed. Gedel and Dodsworth have denied all charges.

Their trial opened at Leeds Crown Court on May 5, 2026. Jurors heard prosecutors allege that Gedel stabbed Watkins with a makeshift knife and passed it to Dodsworth, who threw it in a bin; Gedel testified that he hated being housed alongside sex offenders, while Dodsworth told the court he had panicked and played no part in any attack.

On May 22, 2026, the judge discharged the jury for legal reasons. A retrial is scheduled for February 8, 2027.

Aftermath

News of Watkins' death spread quickly, and while many saw it as prison justice, some saw it as yet another failure of the system to protect those under its watch, even those convicted of the most heinous crimes. For her part, Joanne Mjadzelics, Watkins’ former girlfriend, expressed relief when speaking to the media about his death. She also expressed surprise that it had taken that long to happen.

Background

The 1970 film The Honeymoon Killers is based on the crimes of Raymond Fernandez and Martha Beck. Refered to as “The Lonely Hearts Killers’, Fernandez and Beck defrauded and swindled several older women during the late 1940s. However, when their crimes escalated from theft to cold-blooded murder, their carefully crafted scheme came crashing down.

The film, which was shot in black and white on a minuscule budget of $250,000, would go on to receive near universal acclaim. It currently holds a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 82 out of 100 score on Metacritic. Though it was not initially a success upon release, it has become appreciated by critics and viewers for its cinematography, direction, and uncompromising portrayal of the callous and brutal nature of the two main characters.

The film was originally set to be directed by acclaimed filmmaker Martin Scorsese; however, he was fired early on in the shooting due to creative differences. Scorsese was then replaced by director Donald Volkman, who was also fired after just two weeks. The film’s writer, Leonard Kastle, then took over directorial duties for the remainder of the project. The film premiered in New York City in February 1970.

Plot Summary

The film opens with a message stating:

Though regular readers of this site may find that first sentence a bit hyperbolic, many of the events shown in the film are, in fact, based on the real story of Raymond Fernandez, played by Tony Lo Bianco, and Martha Beck, played by Shirley Stoler. The film also uses the actual names of the perpetrators and their victims, which is not always typical of films based on real events. However, the timeline of events, as well as some of the locations, have been changed or altered for dramatic purposes.

At the beginning of the film, we see Martha Beck, an overweight and lonely hospital nursing administrator who is angry and bitter at the way her life is going, and lashes out at those under her. Martha lives in Mobile, Alabama, with her friend Bunny, who cares for Martha’s elderly mother.

One day, an unexpected letter arrives for Martha. When she opens it, she is furious to learn that Bunny had registered her in “Aunt Carrie’s Friendship Club,” a correspondence service for lonely people. However, her attitude soon changes when she receives a letter from a man named Raymond Fernandez from New York.

We hear a voiceover from Raymond as he is writing a letter to Martha. He says that it is the first time he has written this type of letter. We then see the camera focus on several framed pictures of various women. The two continue to exchange letters, and Ray, as he is now referred to by Martha, agrees to visit Martha in Mobile.

Ray charms and seduces Martha, and she gives him several hundred dollars before he returns to New York. Realizing that Martha has no real assets, Ray attempts to end things. Martha, with help from Bunny, then calls Ray and threatens to kill herself if Ray breaks up with her. Though we see that she is bluffing, Ray believes her and, in a way, is flattered that she has become so enamored with him.

Martha then visits Ray in New York, where he reveals he is actually a con man who romances women and defrauds them of their money. Martha is undeterred by this and continues seeing Ray. After returning to Alabama, Martha is fired from her job due to her correspondence with Ray.

Ray agrees to let Martha come to New York and stay with him, but he refuses to allow her to bring her mother. Against her mother’s pleading, Martha checks her into a retirement home and heads for New York. She agrees to assist in Ray’s schemes by pretending to be his sister.

Their first victim is an older schoolteacher from New Jersey, who Ray marries under an assumed name. The scheme is cut short when the woman discovers that Martha has stolen cash and jewelry from her bag while she was in the bathroom. After Martha threatens to expose her letters to Ray to her school’s superintendent, the woman angrily leaves.

Their next target is an unmarried woman named Myrtle who is pregnant and has agreed to pay Ray to pose as her husband to save face with her family. Things start to go wrong when the woman becomes attracted to Ray and wants to be intimate. This enrages Martha, who, after a bitter argument, gives Ray a bunch of pills to give to Myrtle. After taking what she believed were sleeping pills, Myrtle becomes very ill, and after Ray puts her on a bus to her hometown, she dies on the way.

Martha’s violent temper and fierce jealousy continue to thwart Ray’s schemes, leading to mutual frustration. In an attempt to appease Martha, Ray rents a house in Valley Stream, Long Island. However, he resents the slow suburban life, and the couple’s funds quickly dry up.

They are soon back to running their romance scam, and the next victim is an elderly woman from Albany named Janet Fay. Janet, who makes her own hats as a hobby, is convinced by Ray, now posing as Charles Martin, that she could have success opening her own hat shop in Valley Stream. Smitten with “Charles”, Janet agrees and, without notifying her friends or family, leaves with Ray and Martha for Valley Stream.

Janet then endorses several checks totaling $10,000 as “startup capital” for the business. During the night, Janet begins to question her decision and tells Martha that she wants to call her family and let them know where she is. After an intense argument, Janet pleads with “Charles” to help her. When Martha accidentally calls him Ray, Janet realizes that she is in big trouble.

Ray then instructs Martha to hit Janet with a hammer, which she does. The two of them then strangle her and later bury her body in the cellar of the house. Ray then forges letters to Janet’s relatives informing them that she and “Charles” are now married and living in Florida.

The two of them then go to their next and final victim, a widow named Delphine Downing, in Michigan. Ray and Martha, once again posing as brother and sister, begin staying with Downing and her young daughter. When Delphine confides in Martha that she is pregnant with Ray’s child, Martha becomes visibly disturbed and tells Delphine that Ray will leave her unless she takes pills to abort the baby.

Martha then begins trying to force the pills into Delphine’s mouth. When Ray and Delphine’s daughter return home from shopping, the child begins to scream when she sees what is happening. Martha lies to Ray, saying that Delphine knows about their plan and was going to call the police. Ray then takes a pistol out of a nearby dresser and shoots Delphine in the head.

After some debate, they decide that the child knows too much and will have to die. Offscreen, we hear the sounds of Martha drowning her. Later, when Ray tells Martha he has one final victim lined up in New Orleans, Martha realizes she will never have Ray to herself. She then goes upstairs and calls the police, giving them the address of the Downing home.

In the final scene of the film, Martha is about to begin her trial when she is given a letter from Ray, which she excitedly reads. In the letter, Ray expresses his love for her, saying that she was the only woman he ever truly loved. This is one of the very few moments in the film when Martha is seen to be genuinely happy.

There is then a message at the bottom of the screen saying that Martha Beck and Raymond Fernandez were electrocuted in Sing Sing Prison on March 8, 1951.

Actual Events

As stated, many of the real events and people involved in the “Lonely Hearts Killers” case are depicted in the film, though the timelines and locations for several were changed. For instance, the real Martha Beck was living in Florida and not Alabama. She also did not live with her mother; rather, by the time she met Raymond Fernandez, she was a single mother living with her two young children. The film does not delve into either person’s background.

Martha Seabrook was born in 1920 in Florida. Martha’s father abandoned the family when she was young. At one point, as a teenager, she ran away from home to join the circus, but later returned. She went to school for nursing; however, she had trouble landing a job after graduation. She briefly took a job as an undertaker’s assistant before moving to California.

While living in California, Martha became pregnant. She unsuccessfully tried to maintain a relationship with the child’s father and eventually returned to Florida. As a way to deflect her shame, she told her friends and neighbors that the baby’s father had been killed in the war.

While in Florida, Martha became pregnant once again by a man named Alfred Beck. Though the couple did marry, their union lasted only six months, and he was already gone before the child was even born. Unlike in the film, Martha, not her friend, enrolled herself in “Mother Dinene’s Friendly Club”, where she met Raymond Fernandez.

Raymond Fernandez was born in 1914 to Spanish parents in what was then the Territory of Hawaii. The family would relocate to Connecticut not long after his birth. At age 20, Fernandez moved to Gibraltar, Spain. While there, he met and married a Spanish woman, and the couple had four children.

During World War II, Fernandez served with both the Spanish merchant navy and British intelligence services. In 1945, Fernandez abandoned his wife and children and boarded a U.S.-bound ship. When Raymond arrived in the United States, he settled into a life of fraud and crime. He was arrested and imprisoned in Florida for robbery. He also became quite adept at latching onto and using women he met.

After corresponding by letters, Fernandez traveled from New York to Florida to meet Martha. In a twist of irony, Fernandez soon learned that she had lied to him about how wealthy and successful she was, in an attempt to impress him. Disappointed, Raymond stayed with her for a few days before returning to New York.

Shortly after this, Martha lost her job. She then left Florida and traveled to New York City, unexpectedly showing up at Raymond’s home. Initially, he was annoyed by this; however, he soon came to enjoy Martha’s complete devotion to him and her desperation to please him.

When he informed her that her two children could not stay with them, she sent them to the Salvation Army. During his initial attempts to get Martha to leave, Fernandez told her he was a con man who made his living by scamming and defrauding women. Undeterred, Martha willingly agreed to help him in these endeavors and act as his accomplice.

Satisfied with this arrangement, Fernandez would write letters to women in the Lonely Hearts club and tell them whatever they wanted to hear in order to get them to agree to meet him. To help put the women more at ease, Martha would accompany them on their date, posing as either Fernandez’s sister or sister-in-law. Though they were successful in several instances, as depicted in the film, some of the scams were undone because of Beck’s intense jealousy and violent temper.

“The Lonely Hearts Killers”

In 1949, Fernandez became involved with 66-year-old Janet Fay. In his typical con man fashion, Raymond piqued her interest by claiming they shared similar religious views. Soon after they met, Fay became engaged to Fernandez. She then moved into the Long Island apartment that he shared with his “sister” Martha.

The con seemed to be going well, as Raymond had already coaxed several thousand dollars out of Janet. However, it was only a matter of time before Martha’s jealousy and violent impulses would come into play.

One day in January 1949, after seeing Raymond and Fay in bed together, Martha flew into a violent rage and attacked Janet with a hammer, striking her multiple times on her skull. Fernandez then strangled Fay to make sure she was dead.

Fearing that Janet’s family would soon report her missing, the couple packed up and moved to Wyoming Township, Michigan, just outside of Grand Rapids. Through the Lonely Hearts club, Fernandez met a 28-year-old widow named Delphine Downing. Fernandez and Beck were soon staying with Downing and her 2-year-old daughter. Downing believed that Martha was Raymond’s sister-in-law.

On February 26, 1949, something happened that upset Downing. At some point, Fernandez or Beck gave her sleeping pills to sedate her. During that time, Downing’s young daughter was continually crying. When the child would not stop, Beck strangled her. Although the child did not die, she had deep bruises on her neck and throat.

Fearful that when Downing woke up, she would see the marks on her daughter and go to the police, Fernandez shot Downing in the head as she lay passed out from the pills. Fernandez and Beck stayed in Downing’s home for several days after the murder. With her daughter continuously crying, Martha eventually drowned the child in a water basin. Both bodies were then buried in the basement.

Unlike what was depicted in the film, Martha did not call the police; instead, Downing’s neighbors reported her and her daughter missing. Police went to Downing’s home and found Fernandez and Beck there; the couple was arrested.

Trial and Execution

While detained, Fernandez and Beck made full confessions, though there were some discrepancies in the details. Fernandez claimed he confessed to protect Martha. However, it seems likely that he chose to confess to his crimes in Michigan because the state had abolished capital punishment.

In what must have been a surprise for the couple, Michigan chose not to press charges for the Downing murders. Opting instead to extradite the pair to New York, where the death penalty was still active.

Fernandez tried to recant his confession, but to no avail. The pair then entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity. Raymond Fernandez and Martha Beck were both found guilty of the murder of Janet Fay and sentenced to death.

Reportedly, Fernandez sent Beck a message mere hours before their execution, confirming his love for her. Beck then told a nurse that she could die happy knowing this. Background

All Good Things is a 2010 mystery crime drama directed by Andrew Jarecki and starring Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst. The real-life events that inspired the movie took place during the 1970s and early 1980s, and later during the early 2000s. The story is based on Robert Durst, the son of New York City real estate mogul Seymour Durst, and the mysterious and suspicious disappearance of Robert’s wife, Kathleen McCormack Durst.

After her disappearance in 1982, Kathleen was never seen again, and despite an intensive investigation and Durst’s erratic and contradictory statements and behaviors, no one was charged in the case. Years later, Durst would be implicated in two more violent deaths.

Though he had seemingly gotten away with his crimes, in a twist of fate, it would be interviews that he agreed to do with Andrew Jarecki, the film’s director, that ultimately put Durst behind bars for life.

Plot Summary

Writers Marcus Hinchey and Marc Smerling based the film's screenplay on events from Robert Durst's life. The film took its title from the name of a health food shop opened by Robert Durst and Kathleen McCormack Durst. The movie was filmed between April and July of 2008 in locations in Connecticut and New York.

The movie, directed by Andrew Jarecki, stars Ryan Gosling as David Marks (Robert Durst) and Kirsten Dunst as Katie McCarthy (Kathleen McCormack), a middle-class medical student. In the movie, their marriage is volatile and fraught with violence, anger, and domestic abuse.

In the early 1970s, David Marks, the son of a real estate tycoon, marries Katie McCarthy, a young, ambitious medical student. The couple open a health food store in Vermont called All Good Things, but are soon persuaded to return to New York by Marks’ controlling father.

The marriage is filled with intense arguments and violence, which at times has Katie fearing for her life. In one dramatic scene, she runs out onto a fire escape and bangs on a neighbor’s window for help because David has threatened to kill her.

Hoping to better her life, Katie enters medical school while her relationship with David continues to deteriorate. Her attempts to leave are thwarted by David and his father. When she seeks legal advice about getting a settlement from the Marks to help pay for schooling, she’s told she needs some form of leverage to get the family to agree. Katie tries to gather evidence to incriminate the family for financial misconduct.

According to David, he puts Katie on a train bound for Manhattan late one night. After that, she is never seen again. Eighteen years later, the missing person’s case is reopened by a district attorney who reads an unpublished novel written by Marks’ friend, Deborah Lehrman, with a murder identical to Katie’s.

Before she can be questioned further, Deborah is shot and killed in her home, execution style. Once again, David Marks becomes a prime suspect. At the same time, Marks is standing trial for the murder of his neighbor in Texas, Malvern Bump.

In the film, as in real life, Marks is acquitted of his neighbor’s murder. The movie version states that no one has ever been tried or convicted of Lehrman or Katie’s murder. Katie McCarthy remains missing. It does end with a provocative flashback of Katie’s remains in the trunk of Marks’ car. He mumbles to his father, “I still miss her,” but the viewer is left to wonder if he means his wife or his mother.

Although the film received mixed to poor critical reviews, earning a 35% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, some critics praised the performances of Gosling and Durst, while others labeled it as “cliched” and “frustratingly ambiguous.”

Actual Events

While the movie All Good Things is a dark murder mystery and romance, the true-life events are just as compelling. Real estate heir Robert Durst fell in love and married his first wife, Kathleen McCormack, a middle-class girl well below his social class.

Only nineteen when she met 28-year-old Robert, Kathleen agreed to move into Durst’s home in Vermont after just their second date. Together, they opened a health food store called All Good Things, but after pressure from Durst’s father, the two returned to New York.

The couple married in April 1972 and began a whirlwind of travel around the world. They eventually settled into an apartment on Riverside Drive in Manhattan. The couple mingled with New York’s high society and partied at places like the famous Studio 54. To many looking in, their marriage seemed perfect. However, Kathleen’s diaries painted a different picture.

Despite her crumbling marriage, Kathleen had ambitions. She enrolled in nursing and then medical school to better her life. Then, on January 31, 1982, while attending a party at a friend’s house, Kathleen received a telephone call from Durst. She left the party and, according to Durst, asked him to put her on a train bound for Manhattan later that night. She never arrived.

Several days passed before Durst, compelled by Kathleen’s family and friends, finally reported her missing. His statements to the police were contradictory. He first said he had received a phone call from a pay phone that Kathleen had arrived safely. Later, evidence proved this wasn’t possible.

A few weeks after Durst had reported Kathleen missing, the supervisor of their building noticed some of her belongings in the building’s trash compactor. Similarly, after some of Kathleen’s friends and family members entered her South Salem cottage, they observed that it had been ransacked and many of her belongings had been thrown in the trash.

During the course of the investigation, it was learned that Kathleen had intended to divorce Durst, and, in response, he had removed her name from the couple’s joint bank account and canceled her tuition payments. Entries in Kathleen’s diary revealed the abuse and turmoil and painted a dark picture of the marriage.

While Durst came under suspicion early on, there was not enough evidence to charge him with any wrongdoing. Kathleen was nowhere to be found, and eventually, her case slipped into the cold case file. In 2017, following a request from the McCormack family, Kathleen was declared legally dead.

Durst had friends, including close friend, Susan Berman, a well-known author, who stated Kathleen had likely run off with another man. Since the couple were known to have had other affairs during their marriage, this seemed a plausible explanation. At the time, Kathleen’s family implied that the wealthy Durst family was able to control the investigation and prevent Robert from being implicated.

The Many Crimes of Robert Durst

While the movie, All Good Things, focuses on the murder of Katie, two other murders are also mentioned toward the end. Although Kathleen McCormack Durst had been missing for eighteen years, in 2000, a new district attorney, Jeanine Pirro, decided to reopen the case. She believed Kathleen had been the victim of a homicide.

Though he was not yet named a suspect, Durst decided to go into hiding in Galveston, Texas. In December 2000, his good friend, Susan Berman, the one who had offered Durst an alibi at the time of Kathleen’s disappearance, was found murdered in her Los Angeles home. She had been shot execution style. Interestingly, Berman had been in touch with the LAPD, and those around her believed she was about to tell what she knew about Kathleen’s disappearance.

At first, Durst was not considered a suspect in Berman’s death until another incredible event happened. Durst had been living in disguise under an assumed name in Texas when, in October 2001, he was implicated in the murder of his 71-year-old neighbor, Morris Black. On September 30, Black’s dismembered body parts were found floating in Galveston Bay.

Durst was arrested, posted bail, and quickly went on the run, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. On November 30, Durst was arrested in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, after he was caught shoplifting a sandwich, a newspaper, and Band-Aids from a Wegmans supermarket despite being found with hundreds of dollars in his pocket.

When police searched Durst’s rental car, they discovered a briefcase containing more than $38,000 in cash, two pistols, and identification cards belonging to Morris Black. After being held in Pennsylvania, Durst was extradited to Texas to face murder charges in the killing of Black.

At trial, Durst admitted that he had killed Black; however, he claimed he had acted in self-defense. Despite Durst’s suspicious actions, including cutting up Black’s body, attempting to dispose of it, and going on the run, the jury believed his story, and in November 2003, he was acquitted of the murder charges. He would serve only three years for fleeing arrest and tampering with evidence. In 2005, he walked out of prison, a free man.

The Jinx

After the release of the movie All Good Things, word reached director Andrew Jarecki that Robert Durst, the subject of the movie, liked it. He praised the acting and the screenplay, going so far as to call it ‘very accurate.’ In a rare turnaround of his previous disdain for journalists, Durst agreed to be interviewed, to ‘tell his side of the story.’

The two would film more than 20 hours of interviews over the next few years for what would become the HBO documentary series The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst. In one session, not realizing his microphone was still “hot”, Durst can be heard confessing that he killed all three – Kathleen, Susan, and Black. Additionally, during the course of the filming, new evidence emerged that implicated Durst in the murder of his former friend, Susan Berman.

On March 14, 2015, one day before the final episode of The Jinx Season 1 aired, Durst was arrested. Authorities believed they had enough to charge him with Susan Berman’s death and issued a first-degree murder warrant. Durst was arrested by FBI agents at a Marriott hotel in New Orleans, where he had been staying under a false name. He was found with a revolver, a fake Texas driver's license, a mask, various state maps, more than $40,000 in cash, and other suspicious items.

Authorities in Louisiana wanted to charge Durst with firearms violations, while those in California wanted him extradited to face murder charges. Because of these disputes, as well as Durst’s various health problems, his trial for the murder of Susan Berman was delayed until March 2020. Then, as it was set to begin, the trial was further delayed due to COVID-19.

After several more delays by Durst’s attorneys, he was eventually convicted of the first-degree murder of Susan Berman on September 17, 2021. In October, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Days after that conviction, he was also charged with the murder of his first wife, Kathleen. She had been missing for forty years and had been declared legally dead years before.

Death and Aftermath

Though it looked as though Robert Durst would finally be held accountable for his wife’s death, he would never make it to trial. After dealing with numerous health problems, Durst died of cardiac arrest in a prison hospital on January 10, 2022, at age 78.

As of this writing, there are several legal battles taking place over Robert Durst’s estate, which has been valued at more than $100 million. Kathleen McCormack’s family has filed numerous civil suits, the most recent of which remains in the pre-trial phase. In a roundabout way, justice was finally served, although Kathleen’s body has never been found. Kathleen’s family is still trying to hold the Durst family legally accountable for her death.

In Edinburgh during the late 1820s, two men discovered that dead bodies could be turned into money. At first, the opportunity came by accident. Then it became murder. Then it became a business.

The 1972 film Burke and Hare takes that real story and turns it into something darker, stranger, and more theatrical. The film is not simply a historical drama. It adds a much larger world of brothels, students, taverns, sexual politics, and dramatic confrontations. These additions make the film feel less like a procedural true crime story and more like a dark horror melodrama.

Directed by Vernon Sewell, Burke & Hare initially met with unfavorable reviews upon its release. According to Sewell, after the rights to the picture were sold, numerous changes were made without his authorization, including the addition of scenes he had previously cut from the film. Decisions about the film’s musical score were also made without his permission.

Despite the changes and negative feedback from some critics, the film shines a light on a macabre real-life case and remains a unique piece of 1970s British horror.

Case Overview

The West Port murders took place in Edinburgh, Scotland, between 1827 and 1828. At the center of the case were William Burke and William Hare, two Irishmen living in a poor part of the city. Hare ran a lodging house, and Burke was a laborer who became his close associate.

Their crimes started when one of Hare’s tenants died naturally while still owing rent. Instead of reporting the death to authorities, the two saw an opportunity to make money. They sold the body to Dr. Robert Knox, a respected anatomy lecturer who needed cadavers for dissection.

At the time, medical schools faced a serious problem. Anatomy students needed bodies to study, but the legal supply was extremely limited. That shortage created a shadowy trade in corpses. Some men robbed graves. Burke and Hare went even further. Once they realized how much money could be made, they began creating the corpses themselves.

Their victims were usually people on the margins of society, the poor, the elderly, travelers, lodgers, and people unlikely to be missed quickly. Burke and Hare’s method was simple and brutal. They suffocated their victims, usually while the person was drunk or unable to fight back. This kept the body in good condition for sale, with fewer visible signs of violence. The method later became known as “burking.”

Over the course of about a year, Burke and Hare were linked to at least sixteen killings. Many of the bodies were sold to Dr. Knox for use in his anatomy lectures. Knox was never convicted of a crime, but his role in buying the bodies without asking enough questions has remained one of the most disturbing parts of the case.

Their scheme finally began to unravel after the killing of Margaret Docherty in late 1828. Other lodgers became suspicious, and when police investigated, the body was discovered. The case quickly grew into one of Scotland’s most infamous murder scandals. When the authorities finally moved in, Hare chose to save himself. He turned against Burke and gave evidence for the prosecution. His testimony helped secure Burke’s conviction.

Burke was hanged on January 28, 1829. Hare received immunity, and soon he disappeared from public life. The case left a deep mark on Edinburgh and on the medical world. It also added to the growing pressure for reform, eventually helping change the way bodies could be legally obtained for anatomical study.

The public outcry following the West Port murders and the implications of medical practitioners illegally procuring corpses prompted the enactment of the Anatomy Act of 1832.

This legislation transformed the process through which medical institutions acquired cadavers for dissection by allowing the use of unclaimed bodies from institutions such as workhouses and prisons. This effectively eliminated the financial motivation for grave robbing or homicide.

A Dramatic Retelling

The 1972 film Burke and Hare begins with the same central theme as the real case: Edinburgh’s medical schools need bodies, and the legal supply is short. Dr. Knox requires cadavers for his lectures, and Burke and Hare step in to fill that demand.

The film shows the two men first profiting from a dead body and then realizing that murder can keep the money coming. The idea that the crime began with a naturally dead lodger is one of the most important facts of the case, and the film uses it as the starting point for Burke and Hare’s descent.

The movie also keeps the basic motive intact. Burke and Hare are not shown as men driven by revenge or madness. They are driven by greed. They kill because dead bodies have become valuable. That is one of the reasons the real story remains so disturbing. The murders were not personal. They were commercial.

Like the real case, Dr. Knox is presented as a man whose need for fresh cadavers creates the market that Burke and Hare exploit. The film leans into the moral ugliness of that world, where poverty, medicine, and money all meet in the anatomy room.

Dr. Knox

Dr. Robert Knox is one of the central figures in the Burke and Hare story. Historically, Knox bought the bodies, used them in his anatomy lectures, and did not ask questions. He was never convicted of involvement in the murders. Legally, Burke and Hare carried the direct guilt. Morally, Knox’s position has always been harder to ignore.

The film presents Knox as part of the same corrupt environment that allows the murders to continue. Though he is not physically killing the victims, his demand for bodies gives Burke and Hare a reason to keep killing. This is one of the film’s stronger choices, because it does not let the respectable medical world stand completely separate from the horror.

One of the pivotal parts of the film involves the murder of Daft Jamie. This character was based on one of Burke and Hare’s real victims, named James Wilson. In the movie, Jamie is shown as a vulnerable young man who stands out because of his cognitive impairment and physical condition. He walks with a limp, which makes him even more recognizable. This is important because Jamie is not presented as just another unknown victim. He is someone whose absence people would notice.

His murder was especially risky because he was known in the city. People recognized him, and that made his disappearance harder to ignore. The film understands this danger and turns Jamie’s death into one of the moments where Burke and Hare’s crimes begin to close in around them.

After Jamie is killed, his body reaches Dr. Knox. But there is a problem. The body shows signs that Jamie has been in a fight. This makes the corpse harder to explain away. Burke and Hare’s usual method depends on bodies appearing clean enough to pass as ordinary cadavers. Jamie’s body is different.

The danger increases when two members of the city guard arrive looking for him. Knox then destroys Jamie’s head and tells the guards that the body belongs to a boy killed in a factory accident. This is one of the film’s darkest dramatic choices. It pushes Knox further into complicity. Historically, Knox’s role has always been controversial, but the film goes further. It shows him actively hiding evidence that could reveal the truth.

It is more of a dramatic invention or exaggeration. But it does serve a purpose. It shows how the film wants the audience to see Knox not only as a careless buyer, but as a man willing to protect his work even when the truth is staring him in the face.

When he destroys Jamie’s head and lies to the city guard, the film turns him from a man who looks away into a man who actively helps hide the truth. That is a much stronger accusation than the historical record can safely prove, but it fits the film’s darker view of him. In this version, he is not just a customer of Burke and Hare’s crimes. He becomes part of the system that allows those crimes to continue.

Dramatic License

As with many films based on true events and real cases, Burke & Hare uses a fair amount of dramatic license to embellish and enhance the plot. Such is the case with the character of Marie.

Marie is part of the film’s brothel subplot, and her role adds a more personal emotional thread to the story. She is not just another unnamed victim. The film spends time showing her life, her connection to the brothel, and her relationship with a medical student. Because of this, her death feels more direct than many of the other killings.

Her meeting with Burke begins after a fire breaks out at the brothel. In the confusion that follows, Marie and another girl are left vulnerable. Burke steps in and offers help, taking them back to his lodgings. On the surface, it looks like an act of kindness. But because the audience already knows what Burke and Hare are doing, the scene immediately feels threatening.

Marie’s killing is important because it makes the crimes feel personal. In reality, many of Burke and Hare’s victims were poor, vulnerable people whose lives were easily ignored by society. The film uses Marie to show that kind of vulnerability in a more dramatic and personal way. She is someone the audience has followed, and that makes her death more painful.

When Marie fails to meet her student lover, suspicion begins to grow. Later, he is horrified when he sees her body on the anatomy table. This is one of the film’s most dramatic moments because it connects two worlds that should never have met: the hidden world of Burke and Hare’s murders and the respectable world of Dr. Knox’s medical lectures.

Dr. Knox tells the student that Marie died of alcoholism, but that explanation does not satisfy him. The student’s personal connection to Marie gives him a reason to keep searching. Her death becomes the emotional trigger that pushes him deeper into the truth. This storyline works well as drama, but it is not part of the historical record. Marie is used to give the film a stronger emotional hook and to move the plot toward discovery.

The final act of the film blends several fictional and real elements together. After seeing Marie’s body, the student sneaks into Knox’s private dissection room at night. This is where the film becomes more like a thriller. The student is no longer just shocked by what he has seen. He begins actively searching for the truth.

Meanwhile, Burke meets an old match-seller named Mary Docherty (based on real-life victim Margaret Docherty) in the tavern. He takes her back to his house at Tanners Close, where a Halloween party is taking place. This gives the final murder a strange and ugly atmosphere. People are drinking, laughing, and fighting, while the audience knows that Mary is in danger.

The party setting makes the ending feel chaotic and theatrical. It becomes a scene of drunken noise, violence, and fear. As the student arrives, a fight breaks out. He calls the city guard, who break up the fight and find Mary Docherty’s dead body. This discovery brings Burke and Hare’s crimes into the open.

This is one of the biggest ways the movie dramatizes the real case. Historically, the discovery of the final victim involved suspicious lodgers and a police investigation. The film reshapes the event so that the student’s search for Marie leads directly to Burke and Hare. It connects the brothel storyline, Knox’s anatomy room, and the final murder into one cinematic ending.

Fact vs. Fiction

So, is Burke & Hare historically accurate? The fairest answer is: partly. The film is accurate in its basic foundation. Burke and Hare existed. Dr. Knox bought bodies. The activity began with a naturally dead lodger and moved into murder. Their victims came from vulnerable parts of society. Suffocation was their method. Daft Jamie and Mary Docherty connect the film to real parts of the case. Burke was eventually punished, while Hare avoided the same fate by cooperating with authorities.

However, the film is not accurate in all its details. It adds fictional or heavily dramatized characters. It places extra emphasis on Marie and the brothel storyline. It reshapes the investigation into a more dramatic chain of events. It simplifies some relationships and makes certain characters more openly guilty or suspicious than history can fully prove.

In the film, the student’s search for Marie becomes the thread that pulls the whole mystery together. After discovering her body, he is led first to Madame Thompson, then toward West Port, and finally toward Burke and Hare’s house. This gives the ending a clearer dramatic shape, but it is entirely fictitious.

The film also makes Knox’s involvement feel more active than the historical record clearly shows. That choice makes him a stronger villain within the movie, but it should be understood as part of the film’s dramatic interpretation.

The film also presents Edinburgh in a very stylized way. The city becomes a place of dirty lodging houses, brothels, anatomy rooms, taverns, and corrupt silence. That atmosphere helps the movie, but it also makes the story feel more lurid than the real historical account.

Overall, the biggest difference is tone. The real Burke and Hare case was grim, desperate, and ugly. It was a story of poverty, anatomy, murder, and public outrage. The 1972 film keeps that darkness but adds a more sensational style. It spends a lot of time in brothels and uses sex, humor, and theatrical side plots in a way that belongs more to British horror cinema of the early 1970s than to the historical record.

In other words, Burke and Hare uses the real murders as its skeleton, but it dresses that skeleton in the style of 1970s British horror.

Background

For more than twenty-five years, the brutal murders of the Miyazawa family in Tokyo’s Setagaya Ward has remained one of Japan’s most infamous unsolved crimes. The case continues to haunt the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department (TMPD). Despite an abundance of evidence found at the scene, including the killer’s DNA and fingerprints, the perpetrator has never been identified.

An Ordinary Family

44-year-old Mikio Miyazawa was a husband and father who worked as a corporate professional. He was also described as someone who loved animation and had been active in puppet and other theatrical performances when he was younger.

His wife, Yasuko, was 41 and ran a cram school from the family home. Their daughter Niina was 8 years old, a second-grade student in Setagaya who enjoyed ballet and piano. Their son Rei was 6 and attended a public kindergarten in Setagaya. ABC later reported that Rei lived with a mental disability and that his family cared for him with deep love and support.

The Mayazawas lived in the Kamisoshigaya neighborhood of Setagaya, Tokyo. Reports described the family’s home as being in an unusually isolated spot. The house stood beside Metropolitan Soshigaya Park, with the Senkawa River to the west, and at the time of the crime, the neighborhood had mostly been cleared for the park’s planned expansion. Only four houses, including the Miyazawas’, remained in the area.

From everything later shared about them, the Miyazawas seemed like an ordinary family living an ordinary life. There was nothing that could predict or indicate the horror that was to befall them.

Murders

According to the police and later reports, the Miyazawa family had spent December 30th, 2000, in an ordinary way. They went shopping near Chitose Karasuyama Station earlier in the day, then returned home and spent the evening eating dinner and watching television together. There was seemingly nothing unusual about the night that would lead to one of Japan’s most infamous unsolved murder cases.

Sometime after 11 p.m. that night, someone snuck into the Miyazawas’ home through the open window of a second-story bathroom. The intruder then strangled 6-year-old Rei with his bare hands before using knives to stab the other three to death.

One of the stranger aspects of the case is that it was learned the killer remained in the house for hours after the murders. He used the family’s computer, ate at least four ice creams and other food items, and drank several bottles of tea, all while the bodies of the family lay nearby.

The next morning, the children’s maternal grandmother, Haruko, who lived next door, became concerned when she could not reach the family by telephone. When she went over to the house and got no response, she opened the door and found Mikio slumped near the bottom of the staircase by the front entrance.

Haruko then went upstairs and found Yasuko and Niina, both of them stabbed repeatedly. In Rei’s bedroom, she found the six-year-old still in bed. He had been strangled. Police believed he may have been the first to die. Haruko then called the police.

Investigation and Clues

Although the case remains unsolved, investigators recovered an extraordinary amount of evidence, including blood, DNA, and fingerprints. Official police materials say the killer was male, had Type A blood, probably injured his hands during the murders, was around 170 centimeters tall, wore large-sized clothing, was slim, and was probably right-handed. The belt length on the hip bag left behind led police to estimate a waist of around 70 to 75 centimeters.

Police also determined from footprints that the suspect wore 27.5-centimeter (U.S. men’s 9.5-10.5) Slazenger shoes believed to have been manufactured in South Korea. Shoes of that size were never sold on the Japanese market. That detail became one of the most discussed clues in the case.

The clothing and personal items abandoned at the scene gave investigators even more to work with. Police publicly released information about a gray knitted crusher hat, a black jacket, gloves, a scarf, two handkerchiefs, a hip bag, and a kitchen knife sold under the trade name “Seki Magoroku, Ginju.” Police also said perfume ingredients matching Drakkar Noir were detected in the bag and on the handkerchiefs.

One of the most notable clues in the case was the sweatshirt left behind by the killer. Police said that only 130 of that specific shirt had been sold, and that purchasers for only 12 of those shirts had been identified. The shirt had been sold in 41 stores across 14 prefectures.

On April 9, 2001, the 100th day after the murders, a stone Buddhist statue was placed by someone on the opposite side of the Senkawa River west of the crime scene. Police said it was not known whether the statue had been placed there innocently or by the killer, or by someone close to the killer, but they considered it significant enough to include in their continuing public requests for information.

For all the evidence left behind, the case remains unsolved. That is what continues to make the Setagaya murders so frustrating and so haunting. Investigators seem to know a great deal about the person who did this — his approximate size, his clothes, his blood type, his shoes, his habits, and even some of the items he touched — and yet they still do not know his name.

Current Status

The case remains open, and the TMPD still lists it under its official title: The Robbery and Quadruple Murder of a Family in Kami-soshigaya 3-chome. There are still officers actively assigned to the investigation. Each year, the TMPD visits the house for memorial ceremonies.

The police page was updated on January 30, 2026, and authorities are still offering a total reward of up to 20 million yen for information leading to the arrest of the perpetrator. The current reward period listed on the page runs from December 16, 2025, to December 15, 2026.

More than twenty-five years later, the murders still occupy a dark place in the public imagination. A family of four was killed inside their own home on the eve of the New Year. The killer remained behind, left a remarkable amount of evidence, and then vanished. Years have passed, but the central horror of the case has not faded.

Most people who follow the case believe the answer still lies somewhere among the things left behind that night: the clothes, the footprints, the blood, the knife, the computer activity, and the hours the killer spent inside that house. Until those pieces finally come together, the murders of the Miyazawa family will remain one of Japan’s most chilling unsolved crimes.

Background

For more than four decades, the identities of two murder victims found in a wooded area north of Houston, Texas, remained unknown. They came to be known as the Harris County Does, and for decades, their names remained a mystery. Amazingly, their eventual identification would also help authorities locate a family member who had been missing and presumed dead for over forty years.

The Harris County Does

On January 12th, 1981, a grisly discovery was made in an undeveloped zone of boggy woodland just north of Houston, Texas. A visitor had let their dog roam the area, and when it returned, it was carrying something with it. Rather than a stick or even a bone, to the owner’s shock and horror, the dog had retrieved a decomposing human arm.

Authorities were called in, and a search of the area was conducted. Eventually, two bodies were found near Wallisville Road. The bodies were badly decomposed, but it was clear that the victims were two adults, one male and one female. They were found a few feet apart, and decomposition markers indicated they had been dead for at least a week, but possibly as long as two months.

Initial investigation efforts yielded few leads. Authorities were treating the deaths as a double homicide. The woman had been strangled, and the man was bound and gagged before being beaten to death. From what little physical evidence was available, it was believed that the female victim may have been attacked first, with the male victim potentially then attacked for trying to intervene or defend the woman.

A sketch artist attempted to render facial reconstructions of both victims, but these sketches failed to generate any new leads. With no evidence or leads and no way to confirm their identities, the pair were labeled the Harris County Does and were buried in the Harris County Cemetery, where they remained for the next forty years.

Victims Identified

In July 2011, after Harris County had received a federal grant from the National Institute of Justice to exhume the remains of unidentified murder victims, the Harris County Does were exhumed for DNA testing. The DNA was then entered into numerous databases, and although this effort did not reveal the identity of the Harris County Does, it did manage to rule out the two being biologically related.

Then, in late 2020, the task of identifying the Harris County Does fell to forensic genealogists Misty Gillis and Allison Peacock. Soon, Gillis located distant matches for the male in Kentucky. These matches belonged to a family named Clouse, some of whom had later moved to Florida.

In Florida, Gillis and Peacock uncovered a very close match to the male victim’s DNA. Peacock made the effort to call several potential matches, and the call she made to Debbie Brooks would change everything. Peacock asked Debbie Brooks if she knew of any members of her family who had gone missing around 40 years ago. Brooks confirmed that her brother, Dean Clouse Jr., had disappeared around that time after losing contact with their family.

After digging a bit further and learning that Dean’s wife, Tina, had also vanished around the same time, the Harris County Does were finally identified. The news was announced by the Texas Attorney General’s office on the 40th anniversary of their bodies being found.

Dean and Tina Clouse

Harold Dean Clouse and Tina Gail Linn were married in June of 1979. Seven months later, the young couple welcomed a daughter, Holly Marie Clouse. People who knew Dean and Tina described them as loving and devoted parents. At the time, the couple was living with Tina’s sister in their home state of Florida. Soon, however, a search for more promising employment prospects would see the Clouse family heading west.

Dean was a tradesman who had become skilled in cabinet making. Unable to find opportunities locally, he set his sights on the rapidly expanding market in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. In the summer of 1980, the Clouses relocated to Lewisville, Texas, a small town in the Dallas suburbs. Dean began working for D. R. Horton homebuilders, and he, Tina, and baby Holly lived with his cousin while they saved up for their own home.

A few months after the move, in October of 1980, their families back in Florida lost touch with Dean and Tina. After a few months had passed, and the holidays came and went, Dean’s mother, Donna Casanta, became increasingly concerned. In early 1981, she reported the couple and their daughter missing.

Though their families tried to make progress, including contacting the Salvation Army to see if they could find a lead in their missing persons database, they were unable to obtain any information on the Clouses’ current whereabouts. Family members said they believed Dean and Tina had become involved with a strange religious group, and the police cited this as the likely reason for their sudden disappearance.

Authorities emphasized the fact that their car had been mysteriously returned to Florida by members of the nomadic religious group. Still, their families felt that something was wrong and believed something may have happened to Dean and Tina. This hunch would prove to be correct, but not for another 40 years.

Discovery of Holly Clouse

The identification of the Harris County Does closed one part of the mystery. However, several questions still remained, including who had murdered Dean and Tina Clouse, and why. Another aspect of the mystery involved the whereabouts of the Clouses’ daughter, Holly. She had disappeared around the same time that her parents did, and many within law enforcement believed that she had likely also been murdered or had possibly been kidnapped.

In hopes that Holly might still be alive, Allison Peacock began working with Dean and Tina’s families to search for her, launching the Hope For Holly DNA Project. Holly’s story was shared far and wide in the hope that someone out there might know something. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children produced an age-progressed photo of Holly, which was shared with the press. Family members submitted their own DNA samples to services like Ancestry, hoping to find a match.

Finally, a year and a half after Dean and Tina were publicly identified, and coincidentally on Dean’s birthday, their daughter was found – alive and well. Holly, who was 42 at the time, was living in Oklahoma. She had no recollection of her true identity or her birth parents, and was married with five children and two grandchildren of her own.

Holly had been adopted by a family in Arizona after being brought to a church there. Her adoptive father, Philip McGoldrick, was the church's pastor. According to McGoldrick, two women, dressed in white robes and barefoot, had brought baby Holly to his church.

The women claimed they were part of a nomadic religious group – the same one Dean and Tina’s families believed they had become involved with. Along with baby Holly, the woman had brought her birth certificate and a note from Dean waiving parental rights to his daughter.

What role this religious group, later identified as the Christ Family, may have played in what happened to Dean and Tina is not clear. In 2023, Holly revealed in an interview that she believes her biological parents may have been murdered for wanting to leave the group. The homicide case for Dean and Tina Clouse remains active and open with the Harris County Police, and the investigation is still ongoing.

Closing Thoughts

The story of the Clouse family stands as both a devastating tragedy and a remarkable example of how advancements in DNA technology can not only help solve cases but can also help restore names and reunite families, even in the midst of such tragic loss. Perhaps these same DNA advancements might finally lead to justice for Dean and Tina and some closure for their families

For those outside the entertainment industry, Ronni Chasen may not have been a familiar name; however, within Hollywood circles, her name loomed large. Over the decades, Chasen had climbed the ranks of multiple prestigious agencies as an all-star publicist, successfully directing award-winning campaigns before building her own agency and representing some of Hollywood’s biggest names.

On November 15th, 2010, as Chasen returned from a movie premiere, she was shot and killed while driving on Sunset Boulevard. Police would later call it a “robbery gone wrong”, but many people close to the situation did not buy that explanation.

More than a decade and a half after her death, the questions remain: what actually happened to Ronni Chasen, and will we ever know the truth?

Early Life and Career

On October 17th, 1946, Veronica Cohen was born. At the time of her birth, Carolyn and Irving Cohen already had a ten-year-old son, Lawrence. The two children grew up in New York City, spending time in both the Bronx and Manhattan.

Not much is known about Veronica’s early life, other than a prominent winning streak in local yo-yo competitions promoted by a toy company. According to her brother, Veronica had always dreamed of becoming a publicist after being inspired by Roy Rogers and Dale Evans.

In Veronica’s early twenties, she began working as a publicist for her brother, who had gone on to become the writer, producer, and director now known as Larry Cohen. While still in New York, Veronica attempted to break into soap opera acting, which prompted her to adopt the stage name, Ronni Chasen. After succeeding as a publicist for her brother, Ronni headed west to Los Angeles, where she served as publicity director for American International Pictures.

Ronni’s career began to take off in Los Angeles, and she became the Executive Vice President of Motion Pictures with Rogers & Cowan, a position she would hold for ten years. In 1993, she became the Senior Vice President for Publicity at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

So far in her career, Ronni had already orchestrated several successful campaigns, including the Oscar campaigns for Rocky and Driving Miss Daisy, the latter of which earned the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1990. However, Ronni’s greatest individual successes were yet to come.

Success Story

After holding prestigious positions with top agencies and numerous successful publicity campaigns, Ronni turned her focus to her own PR firm, Chasen & Company. In this role, she and her agency represented some of Hollywood’s top actors, directors, and composers, including Hans Zimmer, John Williams, and Michael Douglas. Her firm represented a wide range of clients and served as the publicist for some of the biggest names in the industry.

Under Ronni’s leadership, Chasen & Co. flourished. The agency ran PR and award campaigns tied to many famous films, including Alice in Wonderland, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, He’s Just Not That Into You, The Wrestler, Sweeney Todd, Babel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and many more. In 2000, Chasen & Co. was chosen to handle public relations for the 72nd Academy Awards, a prestigious honor for any PR firm.

During Ronni’s illustrious career in Hollywood, she contributed to over 150 Oscar nominations and campaigns. Many of these campaigns resulted in awards, and she earned a reputation as a “power publicist.”

Over the course of her career, Ronni also personally directed the Oscar campaigns for seven Best Picture winners, including Slumdog Millionaire, No Country for Old Men, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Chicago, and others. The success of Chasen & Co. was not limited to Academy Awards: the agency also helped their musically inclined clientele garner more than 65 Grammy nominations.

November 15, 2010

On November 15th, 2010, Ronni had attended the premiere of Burlesque at a hotel in Hollywood. She and her agency were directing an Oscar campaign for Cher, who was one of the film’s leads. Ronni left the premiere and was driving back to her flat in the Regency Wilshire building.

At approximately 12:30 a.m., she was driving down Sunset Boulevard in Beverly Hills when she stopped at a red light at the corner of Whittier Drive. As she waited at the light, shots were fired through her passenger side window.

Ronni was struck multiple times, including twice in the chest, once in the right arm, and another near her right shoulder. This final shot would prove to be fatal, as the bullet made its way to Ronni’s heart. Despite being gravely wounded, she kept control of the vehicle for approximately a quarter mile before crashing the car.

This area was known to be safe, and there hadn’t been a homicide there for five years. The sound of gunshots ringing out in the night alerted the local residents, who immediately called the police.

By the time first responders arrived on scene, it was too late. They extracted Ronni from the car, still clinging to life, and transported her to Cedars-Sinai hospital. Sadly, at just after 1:00 a.m. on November 16th, Ronni Chasen was pronounced dead.

Investigation

In the aftermath of Ronni Chasen’s death, those left behind struggled to make sense of it. Nobody could understand why someone would murder her on her way home from a premiere. Rumors began to circulate about potential gambling debts, shady art deals, and potentially fraudulent film financing.

Photos from the crime scene showed that Ronni’s shoes were still planted near the gas pedals, and her Prada purse was left undisturbed in the passenger seat. There were no bullet casings found at the scene, and a weapon was never located. Whoever had killed Ronni had done it quickly, quietly, and then slipped back into the night.

Eight months later, the Beverly Hills Police Department announced that it was closing the case. According to them, ex-convict Harold Smith had killed Ronni in a robbery attempt gone wrong. When they had attempted to question him two weeks after Ronni’s death, he took his own life. For many, this explanation was unsatisfactory.

If it were a robbery attempt, why was Ronni’s purse left sitting there? Why had the killer not snatched her keys and emptied her apartment of the countless pieces of priceless art and fine clothing? With a rumored net worth of over $6 million, if this were a robbery attempt, why had absolutely nothing been taken? The pieces simply were not adding up.

Theories and Potential Motives

When looking at the possibility that Harold Smith was the shooter, there is a potential motive, as years prior, Smith had been in an accident involving Ronni and was rumored to be unhappy with the settlement.

Even so, Smith did not have a car and rode a bicycle. Even if he might have concluded that Chasen would be attending the premiere, he would have had no way of knowing when she’d be leaving or the route she’d be taking home.

One theory surrounding Ronni’s death involves the distribution of her will. Of the more than $6 million estate, nearly all of it was left to her brother and one niece. Larry Cohen had two daughters, and therefore Ronni had two nieces.

She had intentionally, as outlined in her will, capped her other niece’s inheritance to a measly $10. However, some of the people mentioned in Ronni’s will had already died, so it seems the document had not been revised in some time, and no updated will was ever found. If her death were somehow linked to a disgruntled niece angry about being cut out of the will, why did she wait so long to act on it?

Nearly six years after Ronni’s death, previously unreleased files from the investigation were reviewed. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this evidence casts doubt on the BHPD's findings. The police were never required to present any evidence to a prosecutor, much less convince a jury that they had correctly identified the suspect.

These documents appear to suggest that authorities may have been less confident in their conclusions than they had led the public to believe, including doubts about how Ronni died and whether multiple suspects may have been involved. With the primary suspect dead and some key documents conveniently excluded from consideration, we may never know the truth.

Closing Thoughts

Ronni Chasen had an illustrious career, spanning multiple decades and earning numerous accolades. She pursued her dream of becoming a publicist and, in doing so, became one of the most elite publicists of her day, perhaps of all time.

According to Patrick Goldstein, Ronni was “Hollywood’s ultimate old-school publicist.” Yet, her career and her life were tragically cut short one November night. Did the BHPD correctly identify the suspect and close the case? Or, as many believe, is the truth about what happened to Ronni Chasen still hidden? The answers are unclear, but we do know that the shocking death of Ronni Chasen will go down as another great Hollywood mystery.

He had built a solid career in the NBA, earning respect across the league before returning home to Memphis to be close to his family. But in July 2010, he disappeared after leaving his ex-wife’s home late at night, only to be found six days later shot to death.

What followed was a painful journey marked by a decade-long search for justice.

A Natural Talent

Lorenzen Wright was born on November 4, 1975, in Memphis, Tennessee. From a young age, he was drawn to the basketball court, and it was already part of his life because his father, Herb Wright, had also played basketball professionally overseas and even tried out for the NBA’s Utah Jazz. Because of that, young Lorenzen learned about and developed a love for the sport early.

As a child, Wright was known for being quiet, respectful, and extremely determined. But Wright’s childhood also had its challenges. When he was just seven years old, his father was seriously injured after being shot in the back while working for the Memphis Police Department. The injury left him paralyzed. Even though the situation was difficult, it made Wright more determined.

As he grew older, Wright’s height and athletic ability quickly set him apart. By his teenage years, he was nearly 6 feet 11 inches tall. This made him a powerful presence on the court. He first played high school basketball at Lafayette High School in Oxford, Mississippi, where coaches and scouts began to notice his talent. Later, he moved back to Memphis and finished high school at Booker T. Washington. His reputation as a basketball star continued to grow.

After graduating from high school, Lorenzen decided to stay close to his family and continue his basketball journey at the University of Memphis. In 1994, he joined the Memphis Tigers basketball team, where he quickly became one of the team’s most important players.

Over his two college seasons, Wright scored more than 1,000 points and recorded 31 double-doubles, meaning he reached double digits in two statistical categories in the same game. His strong performances helped the Tigers win more than 20 games in consecutive seasons and reach the NCAA Tournament, including a run to the Sweet Sixteen in 1995.

By the time he finished his sophomore year in 1996, Wright had built a reputation as a hardworking and determined player. Coaches admired his effort and physical strength, while fans loved his determination and loyalty to Memphis. Many experts agreed that he was ready for the next level.

NBA Career and Achievements

In 1996, the dream that Lorenzen Wright had worked toward since childhood finally became reality. After two strong seasons in college basketball, he declared for the 1996 NBA Draft, hoping to turn his lifelong dream of playing professionally into a reality. On draft night, the Los Angeles Clippers selected him with the 7th overall pick in the first round.

Lorenzen made his NBA debut on November 5, 1996, beginning his professional career. He spent his first three seasons from 1996 to 1999 with the Los Angeles Clippers. During those early years, he adjusted to the fast pace and physical style of the NBA. As a young player, he focused on defense, rebounding, and protecting the rim.

By his second season, he was already becoming a reliable player for his team. In the 1997–1998 season, Wright averaged close to 9 points and nearly 9 rebounds per game, showing that he could compete against the league’s top big men. Over the next decade, Wright played for several teams across the league, including his hometown Memphis Grizzlies from 2001 to 2006.

In total, Wright played 13 seasons in the NBA, appearing in 778 games. He had several strong seasons, especially while playing for the Memphis Grizzlies. During his career, Wright averaged about 8 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. While these numbers might not look flashy compared to superstar players, they showed he was a dependable role player who contributed to every team he joined.

By 2009, after more than a decade in professional basketball, Wright’s time in the NBA began to wind down. His final season included short stints with the Sacramento Kings and the Cleveland Cavaliers during the 2008–2009 season. Later that same year, Wright retired from professional basketball.

Life After Basketball

After retirement, Wright returned to Memphis, the city where his basketball journey had begun. He wanted to spend more time with his family and remain connected to the community that had supported him since he was a young player with big dreams.

Wright was the father of seven children, and despite the busy life of an NBA player, those close to him often said that his kids were the most important part of his life. His children were Lorenzen Jr., Loren, twin boys Lamar and Shamar, Sierra, Sofia, and Lawson. The family had experienced heartbreak years earlier. In March 2003, their baby daughter, Sierra Simone Wright, died at just 11 months old from sudden infant death syndrome.

That tragedy deeply affected Wright and his family, leaving them with emotional scars that never fully healed. So after leaving the NBA, he wanted to be more present in his children’s daily lives. He attended their activities, supported their interests, and wanted to make sure they had a stable future.

Separation and Divorce

However, life at home was not always peaceful. Wright’s relationship with his wife, Sherra Wright-Robinson, had become strained over the years. The two had first met when Wright was still a teenager during the time Sherra’s father had coached him in youth basketball. They began dating during his high school years, and they eventually married on June 6, 1998.

But after more than a decade of marriage, the relationship began to fall apart. Friends later said the couple struggled with trust issues and personal conflicts. The couple decided to separate, and their divorce was finalized in February 2010, after 13 years of marriage.

Despite their divorce, Lorenzen and Sherra remained connected because of their children. They tried to keep communication open so they could raise their kids together. In fact, on several occasions after the divorce, Wright was still seen spending time at Sherra’s home in Collierville, Tennessee.

Disappearance

In July 2010, Lorenzen Wright was back in the Memphis area visiting family and spending time with his children. It had only been a few months since his divorce from Sherra earlier that year, and he was trying to adjust to a new chapter in life. On the evening of July 18, Wright visited his ex-wife at her home in Collierville, Tennessee, about 30 miles east of Memphis. According to Sherra Wright-Robinson, he stopped by to see their children and talk for a while before leaving later that night.

Sometime around 10:00 p.m., Lorenzen left the house. Sherra later told investigators that he said he was going to meet someone. A few hours later, at 12:18 a.m. on July 19, a 911 operator in Germantown, Tennessee received a strange call from Wright’s cell phone.

During the call, Wright’s voice could be heard speaking briefly with the dispatcher. According to reports, Wright shouted a curse word as if something terrible had just happened. Suddenly, the sound of multiple gunshots rang out through the phone. The dispatcher heard between nine and eleven shots fired during the call. After the gunfire, the line went completely silent.

Because the system could not confirm the exact location of the call, the incident was not immediately reported to other police departments. This mistake would later become a serious controversy and lead to criticism of the emergency response system.

Wright’s family began to worry. It was unusual for him to disappear without telling someone where he was going. Friends and relatives tried calling his phone, but it went straight to voicemail. Days passed with no sign of the former NBA star. Finally, on July 22, 2010, Lorenzen Wright’s family contacted authorities and filed a missing person report with the Collierville Police Department. Police soon began searching for Wright.

Authorities began attempting to trace his last known movements. Investigators reviewed phone records, spoke with family members, and searched locations where he had last been seen.

The most crucial piece of the investigation concerned the strange 911 call placed from Wright’s cellphone early on July 19, 2010. Investigators eventually confirmed that the call had come from a wooded area outside Memphis. That information helped guide search teams toward the area where they believed Wright might have been. For several days, police searched parts of southeast Memphis, especially woodland and empty fields where the call may have originated.

A Grim Discovery

On July 28, 2010, about ten days after Wright disappeared, searchers made a grim discovery. A city worker discovered a body in a wooded field near Callis Cutoff Road in southeast Memphis, not far from where the 911 call had likely been made. The area was a quiet, undeveloped area of land near a neighborhood called Hickory Hill.

The remains were confirmed to be those of 34-year-old Lorenzen Wright. The tragic news shook the city. For days, people had hoped the former NBA player would be found safe. Instead, the search ended in heartbreak.

An autopsy was performed by the Shelby County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death. The medical examiner found that Wright had been shot at least five times. According to the report, he suffered two gunshot wounds to the head, two to the chest, and one to his right forearm.

Investigators also discovered shell casings from different types of guns at the scene, suggesting that more than one weapon had been used during the attack. Wright’s death was ruled a homicide caused by gunshot wounds.

Investigation

In the days following the discovery of Wright’s body, detectives from the Memphis Police Department began carefully examining the crime scene. Investigators collected evidence, searched the surrounding wooded area, and studied Wright’s phone records. Aside from the shell casings found, the scene provided few clues as to the identity of the killer or killers.

Police believed Wright had been lured to the location before he was shot, but they did not know who had arranged the meeting or why. Detectives began interviewing people who had been close to Wright and those who had seen him during his final hours.

One of the most important interviews was with Wright’s ex-wife, Sherra Wright-Robinson. Sherra told investigators that Wright had left her house late that night with someone in a vehicle she did not recognize. She also said that before leaving, Wright had been talking on the phone about a possible deal involving $110,000, though the details of the conversation were unclear.

Detectives also looked into Wright’s personal life, financial records, and recent activities. They wanted to know if he had conflicts with anyone, business problems, or personal issues that could explain why someone would want to harm him. Despite months of interviews and investigation, no clear suspect emerged.

In 2011, a reward of more than $20,000 was offered for information about Wright’s murder. Crime Stoppers, the state of Tennessee, the city of Memphis, and the Memphis Grizzlies all contributed money towards the reward.

Controversy

One of the most troubling parts of the investigation involved the 911 call made from Wright’s cellphone on the night he disappeared. The police dispatcher had not immediately alerted officers or other departments about the call. Officials said this was because they could not confirm exactly where the call originated or whether it was within their jurisdiction.

The situation caused anger and frustration among Wright’s family, who believed the call should have been treated as an emergency from the start, especially because there were audible gunshots in the background during the call. Many people believed that if this information had been shared sooner, police might have been able to find Wright faster.

The city of Germantown, Tennessee, where the call had been received, later faced criticism and legal action related to the handling of the call. But despite the considerable attention surrounding the case, months turned into years without any arrests.

Breakthrough

Nearly seven years after Lorenzen Wright’s death, investigators uncovered a crucial piece of evidence that completely changed the direction of the case. Earlier in the investigation, a witness had told authorities that the gun used in the killing had been thrown into a lake in Walnut, Mississippi, a small town about 75 miles east of Memphis. For years, that claim had led nowhere, but detectives decided to try once more.

In 2017, an FBI dive team returned to the lake. During the search, divers recovered a 9-millimeter Smith & Wesson pistol. Ballistics testing later matched the gun to shell casings that had been found near Wright’s body in Memphis.

With the weapon linked to the crime scene, detectives in Memphis began reviewing the case again from the beginning. Old witness statements were reexamined, and investigators started connecting new pieces of information with what they already knew.

They also obtained court permission to monitor certain phone calls connected to people involved in the investigation. Slowly, the pieces of the puzzle began to come together. On December 5, 2017, police arrested Billy Ray Turner, a landscaper and church deacon from Collierville, Tennessee. He was charged with first-degree murder in connection with Wright’s death.

A Shocking Revelation

On December 15, 2017, investigators arrested another suspect who was much closer to the victim. That person was Sherra Wright-Robinson, Lorenzen Wright’s former wife. Authorities arrested Wright-Robinson in Riverside, California, and charged her with first-degree murder, conspiracy, and solicitation to commit murder, accusing her of helping plan the murder of her ex-husband.

Sherra Wright-Robinson and Billy Ray Turner had both attended the same Mount Olive Missionary Baptist church in the Collierville area, where Turner served as a deacon. According to prosecutors, the two became close over time. Witnesses later told investigators that the relationship may have been more than just friendship. Some reports suggested they were romantically involved, though Turner denied it.

Another man, Jimmie Martin, was also believed to have been involved in the plot. Martin later cooperated with investigators and helped provide information that led to the discovery of the murder weapon.

Court testimony later described how Wright may have been led to the remote field where he was killed. According to a key witness, Sherra told Lorenzen she needed to meet someone in Memphis to collect money. She allegedly asked him to come with her.

When Wright arrived at the location, he was ambushed by the attackers. Witness testimony suggested he tried to escape by jumping a fence and running across the field. During those terrifying moments, Wright managed to call 911, which captured the sound of gunshots before the line went silent.

It was alleged that money may have been a motive for the crime. Lorenzen had taken out a $1 million life insurance policy before his death. After he died, Sherra received the money because she had been named as the beneficiary. The insurance was supposed to benefit Wright’s children, but reports said the funds had been spent within a few years.

Legal Proceedings and Sentencing

On July 25, 2019, Sherra Wright appeared in a courtroom in Shelby County, Tennessee, and pleaded guilty to facilitation of first-degree murder. By accepting the plea deal, she admitted that she helped plan the events that led to Wright’s death, even though she did not personally carry out the shooting.

The plea agreement helped prosecutors avoid a prolonged trial. It also meant Sherra Wright-Robinson would not face the possibility of a life sentence for first-degree murder. As part of the plea agreement, Sherra Wright-Robinson was sentenced to 30 years in prison. She was denied parole in May 2022 and will next be eligible in May 2027.

Unlike Sherra Wright-Robinson, Billy Ray Turner chose not to plead guilty. Instead, he decided to fight the charges in court. Turner’s trial began in March 2022 in Shelby County. Prosecutors presented evidence collected during the investigation, including witness testimony, phone records, and details about the recovered murder weapon.

One of the key witnesses was Jimmie Martin, a cousin of Sherra Wright-Robinson. Martin testified that he helped Turner dispose of the gun used in the murder by throwing it into a lake in Mississippi. Jurors also heard the 911 call that Lorenzen Wright made during the shooting, where gunshots could be heard before the call suddenly ended.

On March 21, 2022, Billy Ray Turner was found guilty of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and conspiracy to commit murder in connection with Lorenzen Wright’s death. Judge Lee Coffee then sentenced Turner to life in prison.

When the verdict was announced, Wright’s mother, Deborah Marion, expressed relief after waiting more than a decade for justice. Although nothing could bring Lorenzen back, the verdict finally delivered a sense of justice for the beloved Memphis basketball star whose life had ended in such a tragic way.

Impact and Legacy

When news spread that Lorenzen Wright had been found dead on July 28, 2010, thousands of fans, friends, and fellow athletes mourned his death. Memorial services were held across the city, including a large public gathering at the FedExForum, the home arena of the Memphis Grizzlies.

Many remembered how he had organized free youth basketball camps and often gave trophies and gifts to children who attended. Those acts of generosity helped people see him not just as a professional athlete but as someone who truly cared about the next generation.

In an effort to channel their pain into something positive, Lorenzen’s family created the Lorenzen Wright Foundation, an organization dedicated to honoring his life and continuing the kind of work he cared about. The foundation focuses on helping families who are facing difficult times, especially those dealing with loss, financial struggles, or challenges in raising children. It also supports youth programs, giving young people opportunities in sports and education.

These efforts are meant to keep Wright’s memory alive while helping the next generation build better futures. For many people, Wright’s legacy is now tied not only to basketball but also to giving back, supporting others, and staying connected to the community. Through his family, his foundation, and the people who continue to remember him, his legacy endures.

Background

For many people, former Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious became the embodiment of the 1970s punk rock ethos. Chaotic, rebellious, nihilistic, and self-indulgent. His short, turbulent life was marked by volatility, insecurity, and a need to live up to the over-the-top persona he had created.

Everything would change in 1978 on an October night in a New York City hotel room when Sid’s 20-year-old girlfriend, Nancy, was stabbed to death. Though he was charged with the murder, Sid, in his drug-fueled haze, could not remember whether or not he had killed her.

Before he could stand trial, though, Sid would die in a New York apartment from an apparent drug overdose. His death had a major impact on the punk scene in the UK and beyond, and left many questions unanswered.

Early Years

Before he became Sid Vicious, Simon John Ritchie was born on May 10, 1957, in Lewisham, southeast London, to John Ritchie and Anne McDonald. Anne had dropped out of school and joined the British Army, during which time she met John Ritchie, a semi-professional musician who also worked as a guard at Buckingham Palace.

Soon after Simon was born, Anne and her son moved to the Spanish Island of Ibiza, where they were supposed to be joined by John. Ritchie had promised to send her money while she awaited his arrival. However, when neither John nor any money showed up, Anne resorted to selling marijuana and hash to support herself and Simon.

Eventually, Anne and Simon returned to England, where, in 1965, she married Christopher Beverley. Unfortunately, Christopher died just six months after the marriage. Both Anne and Simon continued to use the last name Beverley for the remainder of their lives.

Simon’s formative years were marked by instability, as he and his mother moved frequently, preventing him from putting down roots and establishing a healthy sense of identity.

After Beverley’s death, Anne and Simon moved to Tunbridge Wells, Kent. In 1971, they moved to Stoke Newington in Hackney, East London. By this time, Simon had begun going by John Beverley. During these years, their financial situation was quite precarious, and it has been reported that Anne both sold and abused drugs, and had been able to secure a flat through the government by claiming to be a heroin addict.

By 1973, Anne had become so absorbed by her drug addiction that she was reportedly not even aware that John was attending Kingsway College of Further Education, a school designed for troubled students who had been expelled or had dropped out of school. By many accounts, John was smart, but he had emotional and behavioral problems. He reportedly told one of the school’s counselors that he had thought about killing himself.

That year, when John turned 16, Anne kicked him out of their home. When he told her that he had nowhere to go, she reportedly responded, “I don’t care.”

The Punk Scene

Also in 1973, John met John Lydon, who would soon be known as Johnny Rotten, lead singer of The Sex Pistols. Lydon is also the person who gave John his infamous name “Sid Vicious,” after John was “viciously” bitten by Lydon’s pet hamster, Sid.

Beverley and Lydon, along with their friends John Wardle and John Grey, began hanging out frequently. They became known in the area as “The Four Johns.” The friends frequented the King’s Road area of Chelsea in West London. At the time, the area was a hub for music and fashion culture.

In 1975, Lydon, along with Steve Jones, Glen Matlock, and Paul Cook, formed The Sex Pistols, a band that would become iconic and have a significant influence on the burgeoning punk rock scene.

Sid, who by this point had dropped out of school, would also become involved in the local music scene. In 1976, Vicious co-founded the band The Flowers of Romance. However, the group was short-lived and did not record any music.

Violent Incidents

During this time, Sid was using drugs extensively as well as drinking to excess — often to the point of blacking out. Unsurprisingly, his substance abuse began to change his personality. According to his friend, John Warble, when he first met Sid, he was goofy, sweet, and funny.

However, when he was intoxicated, he was self-destructive, unpredictable, and violent. In June 1976, while attending a Sex Pistols show, Sid attacked fellow musician and music writer Nick Kent with a motorcycle chain, striking him several times on the head. Kent had apparently been blocking his view. Though the incident was reported, Sid was not charged.

In September 1976, Sid attended a performance by the band The Damned. Once again heavily intoxicated, Sid hurled a glass at the band’s lead singer. However, he missed, and the shattered glass severely injured the eye of a young woman in attendance. This time, Sid was arrested and jailed for the incident.

Joining The Sex Pistols

Within the punk scene, Sid became The Sex Pistols’ uber-fan, attending all of their shows while out of his mind on drugs and alcohol. His rowdy behavior was encouraged as it helped the band gain a rebellious and edgy reputation.

Then, in February 1977, Glen Matlock left the band, and Sid was asked to step in and become their bassist. Though many of his contemporaries have described Sid’s musical talent as minimal to non-existent, what he lacked in ability, he more than made up for in look and attitude.

In March of that year, Sid cut the face of a BBC recording engineer with a broken bottle. Though he was not charged, the band was dropped from their record label, and Capital Radio banned all of their songs from its stations.

Due to his lack of playing ability, Sid only appeared on one song for the band’s debut album, and even that had to be overdubbed by bandmate Steve Jones.

Toxic Romance

Soon after joining the Sex Pistols, Sid met Nancy Spungen, a 19-year-old American groupie. The two began a relationship that was described by those around them as extremely volatile. By the time they met, Spungen was a heroin addict with a long history of emotional and behavioral problems. She had been kicked out of public school by the time she was eleven and had been arrested on several occasions.

At 17, she moved to New York City, where she made ends meet by doing sex work before moving to London and becoming a groupie in the punk rock scene. Though she was widely disliked because of her abrasive personality and behavior, she was tolerated by the musicians because she supplied them with drugs and sex.

Although Sid was using a variety of different drugs at this time, it has widely been reported that it was Nancy who first turned him onto heroin. This would only accelerate his downfall, as his music now took a backseat to his drug use. Sid and Nancy spent much of their time together using drugs. Their relationship was tumultuous, with both of them being verbally and physically abusive towards each other.

End of the Sex Pistols

In October 1977, the Sex Pistols’ debut (and only) album, Never Mind the Bullocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols, was released. Despite numerous bans in place for their music, the album debuted at number one on the UK Album Charts and soon went gold.

The band toured in support of the record, and in January 1978, their manager booked them to play a series of shows in the southern United States. This proved to be a culture shock, and there were several incidents, including a show in Dallas, Texas, where Sid was hit in the head with a full can of beer after antagonizing the audience.

There were also internal clashes within the band, and on January 14, 1978, the Sex Pistols played their final show at the Winterlands Ballroom in San Francisco, where Johnny Rotten announced the band’s breakup on stage.

On January 19, Sid took a flight from San Francisco to New York during which he slipped into a drug and alcohol induced coma and was rushed to the hospital. During the spring and summer of 1978, Sid and Nancy traveled to Paris and then England, where Sid met up with former Sex Pistol Glen Matlock.

The two of them, along with two other musicians, played a show at the Electric Ballroom in Camden Town under the name Vicious White Kids. The money he earned for this show allowed him and Nancy to fly back to New York.

October 12, 1978

After returning to New York, the pair had taken up residence in room 100 of the Hotel Chelsea in Manhattan. Late on the night of October 11, into the early morning hours of October 12, they were on a drug binge as they hosted various friends and acquaintances.

Around 2:30 a.m., Nancy asked one of the guests, Michael Morra, a comedian and actor who went by the stagename Rockets Redglare, to buy some more drugs for them. Two of the guests would later state that Nancy was still alive at 5 a.m. A guest in a neighboring room would claim that they heard what sounded like female moaning coming from room 100 around 7:30 a.m.

Around 10 a.m., the hotel’s front desk received a call from Sid saying he needed assistance. When the police arrived soon after, they found him wandering the halls of the hotel. Inside their hotel bathroom was the body of 20-year-old Nancy Spungen. She had suffered a single stab wound to her abdomen from a 5-inch hunting knife and had bled to death on the bathroom floor.

Sid was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. He gave conflicting statements to the police, at first saying he didn’t stab Nancy, then saying he did stab her, but didn’t mean to kill her, and later saying that she must have accidentally fallen on the knife.

Former Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren and Sid’s mother, Anne, retained a lawyer from the firm of famed attorney F. Lee Bailey, with all legal fees being covered by Virgin Records.

Sid was released on bond and returned to the Hotel Chelsea, where he was accompanied by his mother and McLaren. While free on bond awaiting trial, Sid attempted suicide on two separate occasions. He spent a short stint in New York’s Bellvue Hospital before being moved to a behavioral health center in White Plains. He was released from the facility in late November.

Incarceration and Death

Even with a murder charge hanging over his head, Sid could not stay out of trouble. On December 5, he was at the Hurrah nightclub with several friends when he got into an altercation with Todd Smith, the brother of musician Patti Smith.

Allegedly, Sid was harassing a woman, and when Smith intervened, Sid jammed a broken beer bottle into his face. The injury required several stitches, and Sid was arrested and charged with assault. Because the arrest had violated the terms of his bail conditions, he was remanded to the notoriously dangerous Rikers Island jail. To the surprise of many, less than two months after his arrest, his lawyer, Jim Merberg, secured his release on a $10,000 bond, with reduced bail conditions.

On the morning of February 1, 1979, Sid was released from Rikers Island. That night, he and his mother, along with several friends, went to the apartment of his girlfriend, Michelle Robinson, at 63 Bank Street. They had gathered to celebrate Sid’s release from jail.

While Anne Beverley cooked dinner, Sid asked his friend Peter Gravelle to pick up some heroin. When Gravelle returned later that night, Sid injected the drug, and according to those who were there, nearly overdosed. His friends managed to revive him, and several of them left the apartment, shaken by what had happened.

According to Gravelle, another friend gave Sid several Tunial, a barbiturate used to induce sleep. At some point during the night, Sid died from a combination of the heroin and Tunial. He was 21 years old. He may not have understood that because he had not used drugs in almost two months, he was more susceptible to a possible overdose.

However, some, including his mother, believe that he intentionally ended his life, distraught over the death of Nancy and facing the prospect of being convicted of murder. Anne claimed to have found a note in Sid’s jacket saying that he and Nancy had made a “death pact” and that “I have to keep my half of the bargain. Please bury me in my leather jacket, jeans, and motorcycle boots. Goodbye.”

Nancy’s mother, Deborah Spungen, also said that Sid had written a letter to her while he was in the hospital, and that it expressed a similar sentiment. Despite Deborah Spungen’s objections, Anne Beverley and several of Sid’s friends scattered his ashes over Nancy’s graveside in Pennsylvania.

Aftermath and Legacy

With the death of Sid Vicious, the investigation into Nancy Spungen’s death was closed. He had been the primary (and only) suspect. However, had the case proceeded to trial, Sid’s attorney was confident that he would have been able to present a reasonable doubt as to his guilt.

For one thing, Sid was incoherent from drugs and alcohol for most of the night. There were also several people in and out of the room throughout the night, with police finding numerous sets of fingerprints.

There was also a large amount of cash on a table during the party that was missing when the police searched the room. However, it does not necessarily mean that whoever took the money also murdered Nancy, considering that many of the people in the hotel room that night were drug addicts.

It has been speculated that the killer could possibly have been Rockets Redglare. Redglare, who died in 2001, refuted this accusation publicly; however, he allegedly confessed to the crime to several friends privately. Those who knew him, though, said that he had a tendency to make up stories to gain attention.

It has also been theorized that the wound to Nancy could have been self-inflicted, and her drug use that night, combined with her mental health and behavioral issues, may have triggered her to harm herself. The truth of what happened that October night will never be known.

In 2006, the Sex Pistols were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The remaining members declined to attend.

The estate of Sid Vicious continues to generate hundreds of thousands of dollars annually. His life and relationship with Nancy Spungen have been the subject of numerous songs, documentaries, television shows, plays, and more. Even though much of his short life was dark and ugly, for better or worse, he remains an icon for many punk fans to this day.

Background

On June 29, 1978, beloved television icon Bob Crane was found bludgeoned to death in his Scottsdale, Arizona, apartment. Although some close to Crane, including his own family, knew about his secret double life as a sex addict, following his death, his public image suffered after lurid details about his life were released. Nearly 50 years after his brutal murder, the question remains: Who killed Bob Crane?

Early Life and Career

Before his rise to prominence as a television personality, Robert Edward Crane was born on July 13, 1928, in Waterbury, Connecticut. He was the youngest of two sons of Rose Mary and Alfred Thomas Crane. —The family originally spelled their name, Crean.

Robert, or Bob as he preferred to be called, spent his childhood and teenage years in Stamford, Connecticut. By the time he was eleven, Bob’s passion for playing drums had become a big part of his life. In junior high, he organized local drum and bugle parades and later joined the high school orchestra. He graduated from Stamford High School in 1946 and briefly played drums with the Connecticut Symphony Orchestra, but was let go after not taking it seriously enough.

In 1949, Bob married his high school sweetheart, Anne Terzian. The couple had three children: Robert David, Deborah Ann, and Karen Leslie. Not long after, he enlisted in the Connecticut Army National Guard and was honorably discharged in 1950. The same year, Crane entered the world of radio by starting as a janitor at WLEA in Hornell, New York. It wasn’t long until his witty, vibrant personality landed him a job as an on-air personality.

He moved on to WLAD in Connecticut and also hosted for other radio stations. His big break came in 1956 when CBS Radio hired Crane to host a morning show in Los Angeles. Crane quickly became the “King of the Los Angeles Airwaves.” With his program at the top of the ratings, Crane blended his drumming and humor with celebrity interviews such as Marilyn Monroe, Bob Hope, and Frank Sinatra.

This led to an opportunity guest hosting on the Johnny Carson show and appearances on popular TV shows such as The Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and The Dick VanDyke Show. In 1963, he became a regular on The Donna Reed Show, a role that lasted until 1964.

Hogan’s Heroes

Crane’s breakout role came in 1965 when he was offered the starring role in a CBS television sitcom set in a WWII POW camp. To the amazement of many, the show took off despite the somewhat controversial and sensitive nature of the comedy. It was an immediate hit that lasted for six seasons. The show also earned Crane two Emmy Award nominations.

The show catapulted Crane to Hollywood success. It ended his radio career and allowed him to embrace the wealth and fame of Hollywood’s elite crowd. And to engage in his growing passion for cameras, video cameras, and other photographic equipment.

Despite his success on screen, Crane had plenty of problems. He had affairs with two different Hogan’s Heroes co-stars. In 1970, after twenty years of marriage, he divorced his wife, Anne. That same year, he married co-star Patricia Olson (stage name Sigrid Valdis), who played Hilda on the show. The couple had one son, then adopted a daughter. (Though Crane’s son, Robert David, later disputed whether or not Crane was the biological father of the couple’s son.)

Career Decline and Private Life

In 1971, after Hogan’s Heroes was canceled, Crane’s career began a decline. He was offered a few roles in Disney movies and guest spots on popular shows such as Policewoman and The Love Boat. But his sometimes raunchy answers on talk shows led Disney to distance itself from Crane, and his guest-starring roles became few and far between.

By 1973, Crane had abandoned Hollywood altogether to act in dinner theaters. He purchased the rights to a play called Beginner’s Luck and toured across California, Texas, and Arizona. This gave him a steady income and the opportunity to perform live. But it lacked the thrill of his Hollywood days of fame.

Crane had always been fascinated by photography and the emerging hobby of videography. When home video technology emerged in the 1960s, Crane was one of its biggest enthusiasts. However, unlike most people who used it to film normal subjects, Crane had a secret obsession.

Long before his fame on Hogan’s Heroes, Crane had a secret known to those close to him, including his own son, Robert. Crane’s sex addiction and womanizing was an open secret. One of Crane’s favorite activities was photographing or recording his own sexual encounters.

He had his own darkroom and often printed photographs of women, saving the photos in personal albums. Albums he’d share with anyone who wanted to look, even if they refused. Crane’s son, Robert, would later say that all the women his father photographed or recorded knew what was happening and had given consent. This would later prove false, as many of the women had no idea they were being taped.

During the filming of Hogan’s Heroes, Crane’s co-star, Richard Dawson, introduced Crane to a man named John Henry Carpenter. At the time of the meeting, Carpenter was a Sony Electronics sales manager. He had plenty of new equipment to feed Crane’s ‘hobby,’ and the two became fast friends.

Crane loved any type of video equipment, and Carpenter had the newest and best. The two would visit bars, pick up women, often due to Crane’s celebrity status, and would later film their encounters.

Murder

In June 1978, Crane had been performing in Beginner’s Luck at the Windmill Dinner Theater in Scottsdale, Arizona. On the afternoon of June 29th, Crane’s co-star, Victoria Ann Berry, went to Crane’s Winfield Place Apartment. He hadn’t shown up for lunch, and she wanted to know if he was all right.

To Berry’s horror, she discovered Crane’s body lying on a bloody bed. He’d been bludgeoned to death with an unidentified weapon, although police later speculated it was a missing camera tripod. An electrical cord from a camera was tied around his neck, almost like a statement.

The once laughing, vibrant star had been silenced just a few weeks before his 50th birthday. The charismatic, lovable character who had become one of television’s most beloved actors had his sordid private life paraded in front of the world.

On July 5, 1978, Crane’s funeral took place at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Westwood, Los Angeles. Over two hundred family and friends attended, including many of his Hogan’s Heroes co-stars, John and Patty Astin, and Carroll O’Connor. He was buried in Oakwood Memorial Park Cemetery, Chatsworth, California.

Investigation

The investigation into Bob Crane’s death was mishandled from the start. Unfortunately, the Scottsdale police were not equipped to handle such a high-profile murder investigation. In later interviews, Crane’s son, Robert, said that he went to find out what had happened and was allowed access to the apartment. If there were any forensic clues to be found, they were compromised by the number of people who were allowed access to the crime scene.

There was no evidence of forced entry, meaning Crane likely knew and trusted his killer. Nothing had been stolen, except possibly a missing camera tripod, which may have been the murder weapon, as no weapon was ever found.

A pivotal development in the investigation came with the discovery of Crane’s extensive videotape collection. The tapes led them to John Henry Carpenter. Carpenter had made a hurried exit from Scottsdale back to Los Angeles on the day of the murder. He became a prime person of interest when it was discovered that the two had allegedly argued violently the night before.

According to some sources, Crane had been speaking to a pastor who specialized in healing from sexual addiction. Later, Crane’s son, Robert, would say his father had considered Carpenter a leech and wanted to end his relationship with the man. Some speculation was that Crane and Carpenter had argued and, in a fit of rage, Crane was bludgeoned to death.

Carpenter’s rental car was impounded and searched. Blood smears were found, and because of the rare type, they indicated they might match Crane’s blood. However, at the time, DNA testing was not available, and there was no way to definitively determine whose blood it was. The Maricopa County district attorney decided not to file charges. There just wasn’t enough evidence to prove Carpenter was the killer.

Case Reopened

Even though the case went cold, the Scottsdale Police did not forget about it. In 1990, fourteen years after the crime, Scottsdale police investigator Barry Vassall and Maricopa County Attorney’s Office investigator Jim Raines reexamined evidence to attempt to reopen the unsolved case.

While DNA testing was available, it was inconclusive on the blood samples taken from Carpenter’s rental car. Some of the samples had deteriorated, and there were problems with the chain of custody of evidence. But the police found another way to reopen the case. Old photos of the rental car revealed what might be brain tissue in the trunk. An Arizona judge ruled that there was sufficient evidence to reopen the case.

In 1992, John Henry Carpenter was arrested and charged with Crane’s murder. His trial began in 1994. Carpenter’s attorney said the prosecution’s case was circumstantial and inconclusive. There were many people who might be angry enough to kill Crane, jealous husbands or boyfriends of the videotaped women. Or even some of the outraged women themselves.

Carpenter was acquitted and continued to maintain his innocence until his death in 1998.

Aftermath

After Carpenter’s acquittal, Crane’s son, Robert, blamed his father’s death on his wife, Patricia Olson. She inherited Crane’s entire estate, excluding Robert, his siblings, and Crane’s first wife, Anne. Robert later wrote a book, published in 2015, titled Crane: Sex, Celebrity, and My Father’s Unsolved Murder.

However, Maricopa County District Attorney Rick Romley always felt that John Henry Carpenter had been the murderer. He was just unable to prove it. In 2016, with more advanced DNA testing available, the Scottsdale Police would try to prove the case once and for all. They used the last remaining blood samples, which prevented any further use; however, the tests were inconclusive.

To this day, the case remains officially unsolved.

In the decades since his death, the story of Bob Crane’s life and tragic murder continues to generate public interest. Crane’s life and murder were the subject of a 2002 movie titled Auto Focus. It starred Greg Kinnear as Crane and William Dafoe as Carpenter. The movie was loosely based on Robert Graysmith's book, The Murder of Bob Crane.

In March 1976, Franco-American actress and musician Claudine Longet was charged with the shooting death of her boyfriend, Olympic skier Vladimir “Spider” Sabich, at his Aspen, Colorado home. The resulting trial, verdict, and fallout would stun many and cause Longet to shun the limelight in favor of a more private existence.

Early Life

Claudine Georgette Longet was born on January 29, 1942, in Paris, France, during the height of World War II. Her early childhood and formative years were shaped in the shadow of the war, as France, like much of Europe, was only just beginning to recover from the devastation.

As a child, Claudine was known to be shy and soft-spoken, but she showed an early fondness for dance and music. Paris, with its cafés, theaters, and music halls, was a place full of culture and movement, and it was here that Claudine first felt the pull of performance. From a young age, she trained seriously in ballet and other forms of dance, learning discipline, posture, and control.

By her late teens, she had appeared on French television and performed in clubs and small venues, gaining experience and building confidence in front of audiences. At 18, Claudine took a bold step to move to the United States.

She landed in Las Vegas, Nevada, and soon joined the cast of the Folies Bergère show at the Tropicana Resort and Casino. This was a French-style revue full of lights, music, and showgirls. It was very popular with visitors. Claudine was a lead performer, drawing attention with her elegance, slender figure, and stage presence.

Career and Marriage

Around 1960, Claudine had a chance encounter with a man who would have a significant impact on her personal and professional life. According to widely reported accounts, Longet met popular American singer and television star Andy Williams when Williams stopped his car to help Claudine after her vehicle broke down on the roadside.

This chance meeting began a relationship between Williams and Longet. At the time, Andy Williams was already a major star in the United States. Claudine was new to the country, spoke limited English, and lived a life centered on dance and performance. On December 15, 1961, Claudine Longet and Andy Williams married. Williams was 33, and Longet was 19.

The couple went on to have three children: Noelle (born in 1963), Christian (born in 1965), and Robert (born in 1968). Much of Claudine’s early public image was shaped by her family life as she stepped back from her own career ambitions to devote much of her time to being a wife and mother.

In public, Claudine was often seen as the elegant French wife beside one of America’s most beloved entertainers. But it wasn’t long before her natural talent and charm began to pull her back into the spotlight. Andy Williams also played a key role in opening doors for her career as Claudine began appearing regularly on The Andy Williams Show, which premiered in 1962 and quickly became one of the most-watched variety shows on television.

She also made numerous guest appearances on other TV series from 1964 onward, including Combat!, Hogan’s Heroes, Run for Your Life, and The Rat Patrol, where her accent and easy smile made her stand out. Her television exposure soon led to a recording career. In 1966, her performance of the bossa nova song “Meditation” gained attention after it was featured on a television drama. That exposure led music producer Herb Alpert, co-founder of A&M Records, to offer her a recording contract.

Between 1966 and 1970, Claudine recorded five albums for A&M Records. Her first album, titled Claudine (1967), introduced her breathy, soft vocal style to the music world. Songs like “Hello, Hello” and her cover of “Here, There and Everywhere” by The Beatles played on radio stations and brought her broader recognition.

The Look of Love (1967) and Love Is Blue (1968) followed, with the latter album also earning attention on the charts. She recorded more albums like Colours (1968) and Run Wild, Run Free (1970), each showing her gentle, intimate singing that blended pop and bossa nova influences.

In addition to her recording career, Longet also found work in films. In 1968, she had a notable role in the comedy film The Party, directed by Blake Edwards and starring Peter Sellers. In the movie, she played Michèle Monet, a glamorous Hollywood starlet. This, along with other performances on the big and small screen, helped establish her as a multitalented star.

Personal Life

After years in the spotlight as a singer and actress, Claudine Longet’s life began to change both personally and professionally. As her husband’s career continued to grow, so did the pressure on their marriage. Andy was constantly traveling for performances, recordings, and television work.

Claudine was juggling motherhood with her own rising career. While she enjoyed singing and acting, she often put her family first, which sometimes slowed her professional ambitions. Over the years, the distance between them widened.

By 1970, cracks had started to show in Claudine’s marriage to Andy Williams. After nearly ten years together, the couple legally separated that year, even though they tried to stay friends. In January 1975, after nearly 14 years of marriage, Claudine Longet and Andy Williams officially divorced. Despite the breakup, they remained on good terms.

After the divorce, Claudine moved away from Los Angeles and spent more time in Aspen, Colorado. In the years immediately after their separation, Claudine’s public appearances became less frequent. She had stopped performing on television specials, and although her music still occasionally received airplay, she was no longer a regular part of the entertainment scene.

Relationship with Vladimir “Spider” Sabich

In 1972, shortly before her divorce from Williams, Claudine met professional skier Vladimir “Spider” Sabich at a celebrity ski race in Bear Valley, California. Over the next few years, they grew close, and Claudine began spending more time in Aspen, Colorado, splitting her time between Sabich’s chalet in the mountains and her home in Malibu, California.

Sabich and his siblings had learned to ski while growing up near Lake Tahoe in northern California. His talent earned him a scholarship to the University of Colorado Boulder. His college coach also happened to be the coach of the men’s U.S. Ski Team, and Sabich, along with several other University of Colorado skiers, competed in the 1968 Winter Olympics, where he placed fifth in the Men’s slalom.

In addition to his success at the Olympics, Sabich competed on the World Cup circuit for several years before turning pro in 1970. His good looks and charisma helped secure him lucrative endorsements that supplemented his prize winnings. His notoriety helped to popularize skiing in the United States during the late 1960s and early 1970s. He was reportedly the inspiration for Robert Redford’s character in the 1969 film Downhill Racer.

Unfortunately, beginning in 1973, a series of injuries slowed Sabich’s career, forcing him to miss the entire 1975 season. During this time, Claudine Longet was splitting time between her home in Malibu and Sabich’s Aspen chalet in the exclusive Starwood complex, where he was neighbors with singer John Denver.

According to sources, including Sabich’s ex-girlfriend and his friend and former college coach Bob Beattie, shortly before Sabich’s death, he had been planning on ending his relationship with Longet.

March 21, 1976

On the afternoon of March 21, 1976, Spider Sabich returned home after a day on the slopes and a training session at Aspen Highlands. He was preparing to take a shower and then get ready for dinner with a friend. Claudine was also in the house that afternoon.

Things between them had been tense in the months prior, as friends later told reporters that Spider had sometimes said he felt tied down, both by the relationship and by having Claudine’s three children living with them.

At some point, Claudine picked up a .22-caliber Luger-style pistol, a small gun Spider’s father had given him, and brought it into the bathroom. The reason why she had the gun in her hand is something that would later be hotly debated in court.

According to her version of events, she was unfamiliar with guns and believed the weapon was unloaded. She claimed that while Sabich was explaining its safety features and demonstrating how to hold it, the gun suddenly fired, striking Sabich. The bullet hit him in the abdomen, causing severe internal injuries. Claudine said she panicked immediately after the shot was fired and tried to get help.

Longet phoned Aspen Valley Hospital right away to report what had happened. Local sheriffs and first responders arrived at the home and found Spider lying in the master bathroom next to the tub, seriously injured. Medics worked to stabilize him, but the bleeding was too severe. Despite their efforts, Sabich died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital, with Claudine at his side, shortly after 5:00 p.m. that afternoon.

News of his death spread quickly through Aspen. Sabich was a beloved sports figure and widely liked in the community, and many people were stunned that his life had ended in such a sudden and violent way, especially under such murky circumstances.

Investigation

Almost immediately, police began investigating the shooting, trying to understand how and why it happened. Longet was taken into custody for questioning that same day. While she was not arrested on the spot, authorities treated the case seriously from the beginning. Investigators examined the gun, the scene of the shooting, and Claudine’s statements.

When she was taken into custody, Longet allegedly uttered, “I killed him”, while in the presence of a female officer. However, the statement was inadmissible because she did not have an attorney present. She later told police the shooting was an accident; however, there were no eyewitnesses other than Longet and her children in the house.

At first, she was charged with reckless manslaughter, a felony that could have carried up to 10 years in prison and a $30,000 fine. Claudine denied any intention to hurt Sabich and maintained from the start that the shooting was an accidental discharge of the gun. She was released on a $5,000 bond, and surprised many when, six days after the shooting, she showed up to an outdoor memorial for Sabich.

The way police mishandled the early stages of the investigation was crucial to the outcome of the case. Shortly after the shooting, Longet was taken to Aspen Valley Hospital, where medical staff drew a blood sample. That blood test later showed traces of cocaine in her system. However, investigators had not obtained a proper warrant before the test was done. Because of this, the judge later ruled the results inadmissible in court.

The same thing happened with Claudine’s personal diary, which the police seized from the home. Investigators believed it might contain information about her relationship with Sabich, including possible tension or arguments. But again, the diary was taken without a valid warrant, and the judge ordered it excluded from the trial. This was a critical misstep, as those who viewed the diary described its contents as “explosive” and could have served the prosecution well.

Background

On March 1, 2008, a family in the small Texas town of Alba was brutally torn apart when four people were savagely attacked by two teenage killers. Three of them died, while the fourth managed to survive and identify one of the killers to the police. After an investigation, the evidence would point in a shocking and disturbing direction.

An Ordinary Family

Just an ordinary family. That’s how most people might have described the Caffey family of Alba, Texas. Dad, Terry, Mom, Penny, and their three children, sixteen-year-old Erin, and her two younger brothers, Matthew, nicknamed Bubba, thirteen, and eight-year-old Tyler.

The family were devout Christians and attended the Miracle Faith Baptist Church. They lived in the small town of Alba, with a population of just 492, where everyone knew everyone else.

Terry was a youth pastor. Erin was active in youth events and sang in the church choir. Penny played the church piano, while brothers Matthew and Tyler played guitar and harmonica. By all appearances, they were a loving family, with the Caffey’s doing their best to give their children a good life.

Because Erin had been diagnosed with ADD – attention-deficient disorder, the children had been homeschooled for the past three years. However, when Matthew admitted he missed his friends, the children were allowed to return to public school. Erin enrolled at Rains High School, where she quickly made new friends.

Teenage Romance

In 2007, Erin began work at the local Sonic drive-in. Customers adored the bright, cheerful teen, one of the few workers who delivered their orders on roller skates. She also caught the eye of one of the town’s local “bad” boys, eighteen-year-old Charlie Wilkinson. Charlie lived with his father and stepmother, and although many considered him a clean-cut high school senior, his life was often troubled.

Although Terry would later state he felt something “wrong” about Charlie from the start, he did not originally forbid Erin from seeing him. The two quickly formed a romantic relationship behind her parents’ backs. At one point, Charlie gave Erin a promise ring, his grandmother’s engagement ring. When her mother, Penny, saw the ring at a church event, she demanded Erin return it.

Concerned about Erin’s slipping grades and her changing attitude, Terry and Penny Caffey went online to investigate Charlie. They found his MySpace page filled with references to profanity and sex. Not exactly the clean-cut boyfriend they hoped for their daughter. In February 2008, after Erin broke a phone curfew, her parents demanded that she end her relationship with Charlie for good.

Friends would later recall it was then that Erin began to talk about having her parents murdered. She saw it as the only way she and Charlie could be together. At first, no one took her seriously.

March 1, 2008

In the early morning hours of March 1, 2008, Charlie Wilkinson and his friend, Charles Waid, entered the Caffey residence. Erin Caffey and Bobbi Johnson, Waid’s girlfriend, sat outside in the getaway car with full knowledge of what would happen inside. Erin had promised Charlie’s friend, Waid, money if he would help with the killings.

At 3:00 a.m., Terry and Penny woke up to the sound of their bedroom door hitting the dryer in the laundry room. Terry at first thought their son, Tyler, had a nightmare and was running to them for comfort. Suddenly, the quiet night was shattered by gunfire.

Terry was the first to be shot – five times with a .22 pistol. Once in the head, twice in the back, and twice near his right shoulder. His wife, Penny, was then also shot, as Terry lay helpless to save her. When she didn’t die right away, she was stabbed multiple times with a samurai-type sword until she was almost decapitated.

The two gunmen then moved upstairs, where the younger boys were hiding in Erin’s room. Although Charlie had at first protested killing the two younger boys, he later realized that the boys could be witnesses. Erin reportedly said, “Do what you gotta do.”

In the bedroom downstairs, Terry heard his son screaming, “Charlie? Why are you doing this?” Matthew was then shot in the head. Although he couldn’t save his son, Terry made a determined effort to make sure the police knew who had killed his family. Even if he didn’t survive, he vowed to somehow let them know Charlie was the murderer.

Tyler, like his mother, was stabbed repeatedly with the samurai sword by both Wilkson and Waid. Wilkson would later deny he had killed the younger boy, putting all the blame on Waid. The two then set the house on fire to hide any evidence against them, and took the getaway car to Waid’s trailer – just a few miles down the road.

Terry Caffey, who was severely injured, managed to climb out a window of the burning house. He later told police his motivation was to live long enough to identify Wilkinson to make him pay for the murders. It took him over an hour to crawl to a neighbor’s house, bleeding profusely.

Investigation

Charles Dickerson was the only officer on duty that fateful night when the call came into the sheriff’s office. The time was 4:30 a.m. as Dickerson headed toward the Caffey home, where he found the house engulfed in flames. He then went toward the neighbor, Tommy Gaston’s house, where the 911 call had come from.

Terry Caffey lay on the neighbor’s floor, bleeding from his head and upper body. He told the police deputy, “Charlie Wilkinson killed my family.” Soon, two other detectives, sheriff’s investigator Richard Almon and chief deputy Kurt Fisher, arrived. Fisher had just passed Charlie Waid’s trailer on the way to the scene and noticed Wilkinson’s truck parked outside.

It seemed unbelievable to the officers that a boy they knew, Wilkinson, who often fished or went four-wheeling with Fisher’s teenage sons, could be guilty of such a crime.

The detectives went to Waid’s mobile home, and Waid let them inside and gave them permission to search for Charlie. They found him lying on a mattress along with a semiautomatic gun in one of the bedrooms. When they asked him about the murders, he denied it, saying he’d gotten drunk the night before and passed out. Another deputy entered the trailer to gather Charlie's clothes to wear to the jail for questioning. His shirt and boots were spattered with blood.

Fisher obtained a search warrant and went back to the mobile home to collect evidence. In the bedroom, he found Erin Caffey, disoriented and confused, hiding under a bundle of clothes. At first, investigators believed the girl’s story about being kidnapped and taken out of her family’s burning home.

Erin even lied to her maternal grandmother that she had nothing to do with her family’s deaths. When she first saw her father, still alive, she told him the same story. Until it all began to unravel.

When Charlie Wilkinson learned there was a witness who could identify him as the killer, he realized he was caught and had no qualms about telling the police everything. Although he originally wanted Erin to just run away with him, she refused and wanted her family killed. Charlie admitted he loved her so much, he’d do anything she asked.

Erin Caffey stuck to her story, but all three of the others involved in the murders pointed the finger at her for planning the murders. During the investigation, it also came out that a former boyfriend of Erin’s, Michael Washburn, claimed Erin had told him she wanted her family dead a year earlier. She had even hoped he would do it for her.

Convictions and Sentences

All four suspects were charged with three counts of capital murder each. Because Erin was a minor at the time of the killing, the court did not seek the death penalty. However, she was tried as an adult on January 2, 2009, and received two life sentences. She accepted a plea deal, which would make her eligible for parole at 59 years old.

Charlie Wilkinson and Charles Waid accepted plea deals of life sentences with no possibility of parole. Despite facing a possible death sentence, their salvation came from the man who’d lost the most, Terry Caffey. In a letter to the Rains County District Attorney, Robert Vititow, Terry stated, “I want them, in this lifetime, to have a chance for remorse and to come to a place of repentance for what they have done. Killing them will not bring my family back.”

Bobbi Johnson, the driver of the getaway car, was named as an accomplice. She was sentenced to 40 years in prison, with eligibility for parole after serving 20 years.

Aftermath

As of 2025, only Charles Waid has expressed remorse for his part in the crime.

Terry Caffey, who spent years in a suicidal state, was finally able to return to where his home had once been. On that visit, he cried out to God for answers. When he looked up, he saw a piece of paper stuck to a tree. It read, “You’re sovereign. You’re in control.” At that moment, Terry was able to forgive and move forward in life.

Terry was also able to forgive Erin for her part in the crimes, and he visits her in prison every few months. Terry later wrote a book, Terror by Night: The True Story of the Brutal Texas Murder That Destroyed a Family, Restored One Man's Faith, and Shocked a Nation. He has since remarried and now has a blended family. Terry ministers full-time and visits schools and churches.

Erin Caffey granted an interview with Piers Morgan, in which she blamed the events of March 1, 2008, on her “poor choices.”

Background

Just before 11 p.m. on the night of May 19, 1983, the calm, quiet of the McKenzie-Willamette Hospital in Springfield, Oregon, was shattered by the blaring horn coming from the red Nissan parked in front of the hospital’s emergency drop-off. As the doctors and nurses looked out, a blonde woman was frantically waving her arms for help. As hospital staff rushed to assist, the woman exclaimed, “Somebody just shot my kids!”

Inside the blood-spattered car was a horrifying scene. On the front passenger seat lay a little girl, no more than seven or eight, and in the back seat lay another young girl and a toddler. All three children had been shot and were in critical condition. The children’s mother, 27-year-old Diane Downs, had also been shot in her forearm.

As surgeons raced to try and save the children, the hospital’s receptionist was on the phone with the police, assesing them of the situation. Downs would later tell them that as she and the children were on their way back from visiting a friend, she was attacked by a stranger who she described as “white, in his late twenties, about five foot nine, with dark shag-wavy hair, wearing a Levi jacket and an off-colored t-shirt.”

She claimed that he had pulled a gun and demanded her car. When she pretended to throw the car keys, the man pointed the gun inside the car and shot the three children before shooting her in the arm and fleeing.

Due to the heroic efforts of the medical staff, two of the children, 8-year-old Chrisite and 3-year-old Danny, survived. However, Danny was paralyzed from the waist down, and Christie had suffered a stroke. Tragically, 7-year-old Cheryl was pronounced dead.

At the hospital, both police and hospital staff became suspicious of Diane’s calm, almost detached demeanor. They also noticed inconsistencies in her account of events, which seemed to change with each retelling. These suspicions led to an investigation, which would reveal the true depths of Diane Downs’s ultimate betrayal and pure evil.

Diane Downs

Elizabeth Diane Frederickson was born on August 7, 1955, to Willadene and Wes Frederickson in Phoenix, Arizona. She did not have a particularly happy childhood, and spoke negatively about her father, claiming that he was sexually abusive and a strict disciplinarian whose demands kept her mother from giving her attention.

Elizabeth, who, as the years passed, went by her middle name Diane, also claims that her parents’ strict religious views forbade her from wearing makeup or trendy clothes, which caused her to be bullied.

However, according to the book Small Sacrifices by Ann Rule, which details the life and trial of Diane Downs, when she was 14, her father allowed her to enroll in a charm school and she was allowed to dress and wear her hair as she pleased. This change brought newfound attention from many of the boys at Moon View High School, including a teenager named Steve Downs. The two of them began dating and were constantly together.

Marriage

After graduation, they parted ways for a brief time, as Steve joined the Navy and Diane enrolled in the Pacific Coast Baptist College, where she was later expelled for promiscuity. However, the two of them kept in touch and corresponded regularly. When Steve returned home, the pair got married on November 13, 1973.

Later, Diane would claim that she didn’t marry Steve for love, but rather to get away from her family. Though their marriage was neither warm or loving, Diane found a new purpose when she became pregnant with her first child, Christie Ann, who was born in October 1974.

Unfortunately for Diane, things between her and Steve did not change much after the birth of Christie, and by January 1976, Diane had given birth to the couple’s second daughter, Cheryl Lynn. Over the next few years, Diane would leave with the kids on several occasions, but would always return.

By 1978, the family had moved to Mesa, Arizona, and according to the book Small Sacrifices, Diane had become “Hostile but passive, she was both bored and angry.” Diane became pregnant after having an affair with a co-worker, and gave birth to Stephen Daniel in December 1979.

This betrayal, in addition to their frequent fights over finances and other matters, led to Steve and Diane’s eventual divorce in 1980. Steve recalled that towards the end of their marriage, Diane was very cold and distant with her children, often denying them attention or affection.

Obsessed

In 1981, Diane Downs began working for the U.S. Postal Service in Chandler, Arizona. There she met co-worker Robert Knickerbocker. The two embarked on a ‘sleazy affair’ (as he was married), and the pair would meet up in hotel rooms for sexual encounters. Knickerbocker was aware of her pattern of short-term relationships and did not expect the affair to last long.

Instead, Knickerbocker observed that Downs was becoming increasingly obsessed with him, and she began pressuring him to leave his wife for her. He refused. She would also beg him to interact with her children, which he refused, as to him, it was an affair, and it wouldn’t have been right for him to have contact with her children.

Robert eventually broke things off with Diane, who did not take it well. She followed him home, banged on his door, and confronted his wife. She would call their home to harass them, and Robert recalled that when he ended things with Diane, she screamed and ranted at him in a way that he had never seen before.

Not long after their breakup, Downs requested and was given a transfer to Springfield, Oregon, and though she was now in another state, her letters and phone calls to Knickerbocker continued.

May 19, 1983

Diane Downs told detectives that she and her three children had gone to visit the home of one of Donna’s co-workers, Heather Plourd. According to Downs, Heather had expressed interest in buying a horse, and when Downs saw a newspaper advertisement for renting horses, she wanted to show Plourd. Since she didn’t have her phone number, she decided to take a drive to her home.

It was on the way back from Heather’s place - after taking a detour onto rustic Old Mohawk Road - that she allegedly encountered a man standing in the road and waving her down. After Diane exited her vehicle, the man produced a pistol from under his jacket and demanded that she hand over her car keys.

Background

On October 19, 1997, 13-year-old Maryann Measles disappeared from a parking lot in New Milford, Connecticut, while waiting for her mother to finish grocery shopping. The case went cold until nine months later, when, in July 1998, Maryann’s remains were discovered at Lake Lillinonah in Bridgewater, Connecticut, wrapped in a blanket and weighted down with chains.

An investigation would reveal that Maryann had been raped, tortured, assaulted, and drowned before her body was dumped into the Housatonic River, which connects to Lake Lillinonah. It would also be revealed that Maryann was not abducted and murdered by a stranger; instead, she was betrayed by those she considered friends.

Maryann Measles

Maryann Jeanine Measles was born on March 22, 1984, to Martin and Cindi Measles in Sharon, Connecticut. From her first moments, her family loved her deeply. Cindi, her mother, often said that holding Maryann for the first time was a feeling she had never known before.

Maryann grew up in New Milford, Connecticut, with her three younger sisters, Jennifer, Victoria, and Chelsea. They lived in a neighborhood where everyone pretty much knew each other. To her friends and family, Maryann was known for her big laugh and boundless energy.

The Wrong Crowd

By the time she was 13, Maryann was spending a lot of time with a group of older teenagers and young adults. These older friends seemed exciting, and all grown-up, and Maryann wanted to feel like part of the group. Some of the girls in this group were dating older boys who were in their late teens or early 20s. Maryann’s mother, Cindi, began to notice her daughter’s new circle of friends and became increasingly concerned.

By early October 1997, the situation had grown serious. Maryann went to her mother with something heavy on her heart. Tearfully, she told Cindi that two of the older boys in the group, Alan Walter and Keith Foster, had been sexually involved with her. Both were legally adults, one 19 and the other 21, and what had happened to her wasn’t just inappropriate, it was illegal.

Cindi was devastated but took the situation seriously. After talking it through with Maryann, Cindi and Maryann went to the New Milford Police Department to file a statutory rape report. The first official complaint was filed against Walter, and Maryann and her mother planned to return soon to add Foster to the report.

Word spread fast, and the older boys were angry that Maryann was planning to press charges that could get them in legal trouble. A statutory rape charge could mean prison time, registration as a sex offender, and a permanent criminal record for them. The girls in the group were furious too, not just because of the legal risk but because some of their boyfriends were the ones involved with Maryann.

By mid-October, the group had completely turned its back on Maryann. Some members, feeling threatened or betrayed, whispered about her, shot her angry looks, and, in some cases, openly threatened her. This left Maryann isolated among people she once considered friends.

Abduction

On October 19, Maryann was at the New Milford Town Green when three members of her former friend group, Maggie Bennett, Alan Walter, and June Segar, approached her in Bennett’s minivan. They began to yell taunts and threats as the van circled Maryann.

Frightened, Maryann found a payphone and called her mother to come pick her up. Cindi arrived and picked up Maryann. They then drove to the Big Y supermarket in nearby Veterans Plaza to pick up some groceries. Maryann waited in the car while Cindi went inside the store.

The parking lot was busy with shoppers and parents unloading groceries. But while Cindi was inside shopping, one of Maryann’s former friends, 24-year-old Ronald Rajcok, pulled up beside her in his Pontiac Trans Am. Before Maryann could process what was happening, he opened the door and grabbed her. She screamed, begged, and told him to let her go, but none of her words worked. Rajcok forced her into his vehicle.

When Cindi returned to the car, she was surprised to see that Maryann was gone. Confused and worried, she drove home and asked Maryann’s sister if she had seen her come back. When the answer was no, Cindi immediately knew something was wrong. She didn’t wait. She went straight to the police station to report Maryann missing. At first, officers treated the situation like a runaway case, but Cindi insisted that Maryann wouldn’t just leave like that.

Torture and Murder

After Ronald Rajcok shoved Maryann into his Pontiac Trans Am, he drove to a pull-off on River Road in New Milford near the Housatonic River. There, the rest of the group was waiting for them. Including Alan Walter, Keith Foster, Dino Dupas, Dorothy Hallas, Maggie Bennett, June Segar, and Jeffrey Boyette.

They didn’t just shout at her or shove her around. They beat her. They raped her. They struck her again and again, even as she cried, pleaded, and begged for mercy. Some of the men took turns assaulting her while others stood by. One participant later described just how Maryann tried to fight back, only to get her arms twisted as she was lifted against her will.

She was repeatedly raped by Walter, Foster, and Dupas, and beaten and verbally taunted by the girls present. As the attack wound down, some of the men moved Maryann closer to the river’s edge and forced her knees down into the shallow water of the Housatonic River, where Walter Alan held her head under for minutes, drowning her.

When Maryann stopped struggling and her body went still, the group then wrapped her body in a blanket and bound it with heavy chains and a padlock. They attached a cinder block to weigh her down, making sure her body stayed beneath the river’s surface, and dumped her into the Housatonic River.

Search for Maryann

The search for Maryann Measles went on for nine agonizing months. The Measles family plastered hundreds of missing-person flyers all over New Milford, on light poles, store windows, and bulletin boards.

Law enforcement spent about 700 hours searching, conducting more than 80 interviews, and following up on roughly 60 leads in the first weeks and months. Police questioned those who had been close to Maryann, including members of her friend group. Investigators learned that several of those individuals had been near the supermarket around the time she disappeared. But getting clear answers was not easy.

Their stories didn’t line up. Some of them said they hadn’t seen her, while others gave vague or conflicting accounts. However, with Maryann still missing and no physical evidence from the parking lot to indicate what had happened, authorities had little to work with.

A Grim Discovery

On July 15, 1998, nearly nine months after Maryann vanished, her remains were discovered by a boater in Lake Lillinonah in Bridgewater, Connecticut. She had been wrapped in a blanket and weighted down with chains.

She was found near the area where Lake Lillinonah connects with the Housatonic River. Because the remains were so badly deteriorated, Maryann was positively identified through dental records.

An autopsy determined the cause of death to have been asphyxiation, and the death was ruled a homicide by the Litchfield State’s Attorney. In December 1998, a $50,000 reward was offered for information leading to an arrest.

Investigation and Arrests

Despite the discovery of Maryann’s remains, the investigation into her murder remained cold, and in July 2001, four years after she had been found, new detectives were assigned to her case. Based upon new evidence, in October 2002, representatives of the Connecticut State Police announced that arrest warrants had been signed and executed for eight individuals in connection with the murder of Maryann Measles.

Seven were taken into custody in Connecticut, and Jeffrey Boynette, who was living in Texas, was arrested there and extradited to Connecticut to face charges. Law enforcement had spent years gathering statements and evidence, and now prosecutors started talks with many of the people in custody about how their cases would move forward. Some agreed to plea agreements, meaning they admitted their involvement and accepted a set sentence, while others chose to go to trial and let a judge and jury decide their fate.

Legal Proceedings

The first significant step came in February 2004, when Alan “A.J.” Walter, seen by prosecutors as one of the group’s central figures, agreed to a plea deal. As part of this deal, Walter pleaded guilty to felony murder, first-degree kidnapping, conspiracy to commit first-degree kidnapping, conspiracy to commit first-degree sexual assault, and tampering with physical evidence, and by doing so, he avoided the possibility of the death penalty.

Instead, he was sentenced to life in prison. Prosecutors said this deal helped build the cases against the others, making it easier to pursue justice without years of legal delay. Over the next few months, more individuals accepted agreements that resolved their cases without full trials.

Jeffrey Boyette entered a plea in June 2004. He pleaded no contest to felony murder, first-degree sexual assault, first-degree kidnapping, and risk of injury to a minor. This meant that he did not admit guilt but accepted that sufficient evidence existed for a conviction, and he was later sentenced to a 50‑year term, with half of that time suspended and a portion of the sentence served on probation afterward.

In September 2004, Dorothy Hallas pleaded guilty to felony murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree kidnapping, and risk of injury to a minor. She was sentenced to 25 years with 5 years of probation. Maggie Bennett was charged with first-degree kidnapping, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, risk of injury to a minor, tampering with a witness, and tampering with evidence. Because of her cooperation, she was sentenced to 19 years in prison.

In accordance with her plea agreement, June Segar pleaded guilty to felony murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree kidnapping, and tampering with a witness. She was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Like Alan Walter, Deaneric “Dino” Dupas was also charged with capital murder, and like Walter, Dupas also accepted a plea deal to avoid a possible death sentence. He pleaded guilty to felony murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree kidnapping, and conspiracy to commit first-degree sexual assault. He received a 47-year sentence.

Ronald Rajcok, the man who had abducted Maryann, was also given a plea deal in which he pleaded guilty to felony murder, first-degree kidnapping, conspiracy to commit first-degree kidnapping, risk of injury to a minor, and tampering with a witness. In exchange, he was sentenced to 36 years in prison.

Not everyone agreed to a plea. Keith Foster refused an offer and instead opted for a trial. During his 2006 trial, Foster claimed that he had not been present at the time of the murder. After hearing the evidence, the jury found him guilty on all counts. The judge sentenced him to 110 years in prison, by far the longest sentence in the case. Even after that conviction, Foster continued to challenge the court’s decisions, but in August 2009, the Connecticut Supreme Court rejected his appeal and upheld the conviction.

Aftermath

Decades after Maryann Measles’ death, her family and members of the community continued to honor her memory. On October 19, 2023, which marked the 26th year since Maryann’s disappearance, her family organized a candlelight memorial on the Town Green in New Milford to honor her memory. Attendees lit candles, wore ribbons with her name, and shared memories of her smile and laugh, reminding the town that even years later, her absence was deeply felt.

In recent years, the story has also found its way into modern media beyond news reports. An episode of the series “Mean Girl Murders” aired in 2023, retelling Maryann’s story for a new generation. Also, in 2025, an episode of a documentary series on the Investigative Discovery channel featured Maryann’s case, bringing attention to the events and those involved.

These programs offered more context and interviews with people who lived through it, helping viewers understand not just what happened, but why it mattered so deeply to the community.

Background

A Georgia farm girl with a difficult upbringing who dreamed of fashion, fame, and fortune would eventually have everything she desired and more, thanks to her marriage to a wealthy businessman. She would come to be known as one of Houston’s most elite socialites and philanthropists.

After making a name for herself, she took in her troubled nephew at her sister's request. Rumors and scandal began to swirl, though she did her best to contain them. Then, one early morning in June 1964, she discovered her husband brutally murdered in a luxury Florida apartment.

Candace “Candy” Mossler and her nephew, Melvin Powers, would find themselves on trial for murder and fighting for their lives. It was one of the most high-profile trials of its day, and the results left many in the public stunned.

Humble Beginnings

Candace Weatherby was born in Buchanan, Georgia, in 1920, and was the sixth of twelve children. Her father was a farmer, and the family did not have much money. Candace and her siblings spent their days doing farm chores, but according to those who knew Candace, she loved to dress up and pretend she was a princess.

She was a beautiful young girl with a vivid imagination, and even the monotony of a rural farm life didn’t stop her from dreaming of a life of luxury.

Tragically, when Candace was twelve, she lost her mother due to complications from the birth of what would have been the family’s 13th child. After this, her father abused alcohol to cope with his grief. Eventually, the liquor could no longer drown his sorrows, and he skipped town, leaving his children behind. Candace and her younger siblings were left with relatives to care for them, having lost their mother and been abandoned by their father.

In her late teens, Candace’s grandfather encouraged her to find a husband who could care for her and provide her with the kind of life she’d always dreamed of. Eventually, Candace was introduced to a civil engineer named Norman Johnson, whom she married in 1939 at the age of nineteen.

One year later, Candace and Norman had a son, whom they named Norman Jr. It wasn’t long before Candace realized this wasn’t the life she was looking for. She began volunteering as a hostess for a military support group, helping host parties for soldiers at Fort Benning.

There, she met Winthrop Rockefeller, son of John D. Rockefeller. Though the exact nature of their relationship is unclear, when Candace had her second child, Rita, in 1943, she gave her the middle name Rockefeller.

Climbing the Social Ladder

A few years later, Candace and her two children relocated to New Orleans after Norman accepted an engineering position with a local shipyard. Shortly after, their marriage reached a breaking point. While Norman moved out west, Candace stayed in New Orleans with the children.

Now free from the marriage she may have felt was holding her back, Candace began to explore her passions for fashion and modeling. She was determined to launch her own career, and after attending Barbizon School of Modeling in New York City, she opened the Candace Modeling and Self-Improvement School.

Candace, who came to be known as Candy, advertised her school and hosted seminars to draw in new students. She had become an entrepreneur in her own right, but rumors of some less desirable engagements began to swirl. It is said that Candy sometimes worked as an escort and may have also hosted “dance classes” for young soldiers that involved far more than dancing.

Despite the unsavory allegations, Candy continued to immerse herself in the local culture and arts scene, eventually landing a volunteer position with the New Orleans Opera. The executives accepted Candy’s offer to meet with and charm wealthy businessmen to obtain financial support for the Opera.

Marriage to Jacques Mossler

One of these wealthy businessmen was named Jacques Mossler, a Romanian immigrant who had amassed a small fortune through a variety of business ventures, some potentially less honest than others. Mossler had recently divorced from his wife of 30 years. In 1947, Candy, then 27, visited Mossler, then 52, at his office.

Though Candy was unsuccessful in soliciting donations for the Opera, which Mossler said bored him, she was quite successful in soliciting Mossler’s attention. Two years later, Candy and Jacques were married during a trip to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Upon their return to New Orleans, they began packing for a big move: the newlyweds were heading to Houston.

Jacques purchased three acres in River Oaks, an affluent suburb on the west side of Houston. Jacques built a three-story mansion, complete with a full staff, a seven-car garage, and even a personal maid to cater to Candy’s every need. Candy, who, as a child, had dreamed of being a princess, would finally have her castle.

With the husband and the home to match the status she so desired, Candy quickly began climbing the city’s social rankings. She became known for her philanthropic efforts, giving money to charitable causes and hosting legendary fundraisers at her lavish mansion.

Eventually, whispers from Candy’s past life made their way to her new city. Rumors abounded about Candy’s past as a French Quarter call girl, but even the scandalous truth of her past couldn’t stop her rise to local prominence. Candy had donated $15,000 to the Houston Boys Club, among many other philanthropic causes.

In 1957, Candy and Jacques flew to Chicago to adopt four siblings who were tragically orphaned when their father murdered their mother and their infant brother. The story of the Mosslers’ compassion and generosity made national news, and when they returned to Houston, photographers gathered to catch a glimpse of the socialite couple and their newly adopted children.

Candy transformed the family’s ballroom into a playroom for the kids, and she and Jacques built a baseball field on an adjacent lot so the children could learn to play sports. By the end of the 1950s, Candy seemed to have it all- the husband, the home, the family, and the fame. Then, in 1961, a phone call from her older sister would change everything.

Trouble Brewing

Elizabeth Powers, Candy’s older sister, called Candy desperate for help. Her 20-year-old son, Melvin “Mel” Powers, had found himself in jail after being convicted of fraud. Elizabeth was hoping that Mel could come stay with the Mosslers in Houston until he could get back on his feet. Candy agreed, and once Mel was out of jail, he came to Houston and was given his own room in the mansion and a luxury car to use.

Candy asked Jacques to give Mel a job, and Jacques obliged. Mel began working as a repossessor for one of Jacques’ loan companies. Things were well until 1963, when something happened that led Jacques to fire Mel, have security escort him off the property, and forbid him from ever returning. After that, Jacques left Houston and moved into a high-end apartment in Key Biscayne, Florida.

Candy, the master of managing public opinion, claimed that Jacques kicked Mel out in a brief fit of anger after Mel announced he was quitting his job to pursue his own business ventures, and that Jacques was merely in Florida on business. Candy told anyone who asked that Jacques was opening a bank in the Miami area and that their marriage was perfectly fine.

Less than a year later, in June of 1964, Candy and the children made their way to Florida. They enjoyed spending their days on the beach, and in the evenings, Candy frequently took the children along for her visits to the hospital, where she received injections to treat her recurring migraines. These were often late-night trips, but the children said they didn’t mind. They were always together, and the children enjoyed going for drives in Candy’s red Pontiac convertible.

Murder Mystery

On June 29th, 1964, Candy took the kids along as she made another trip to the hospital. Along the way, she stopped to mail some letters from a local hotel, then stopped again to get dinner for the children. When they finally made it to the hospital, it was nearly midnight.

It took several hours for Candy to be seen, but she eventually got her injections. It was after 4 a.m. when she took the children back to Jacques’s apartment. This late-night excursion would become a night the family would never forget.

Background

From an early age, Michael Stone seemed destined for prison. After an abusive and tumultuous childhood, Stone dropped out of school and drifted into a life of drug addiction and petty crime. As his addiction worsened, his crimes became more violent and his mental health deteriorated.

Stone himself would admit that he was unable to control his violent temper, and over the years, his drug-fueled crimes and fits of rage landed him in prison numerous times throughout his life.

He has also been a suspect in several unsolved homicides, yet it was the crime for which he is currently serving life in prison, the savage attack of a mother and her two daughters in 1996, that is perhaps the most controversial.

A Troubled Start

Michael Stone was born Michael John Goodban in the town of Royal Tunbridge Wells in Kent on June 7, 1960. From the start, his life lacked stability. Both Ivor Goodban, his registered father, and Peter Stone, whose last name he would adopt, denied that he was their son.

His early life was marred by abuse and domestic violence, and when he was about eight years old, his mother, Jean, sent him to a children’s care home in Canterbury, near the village of Chillenden, Kent.

These early experiences made Stone a troubled and disruptive child, and as a result, he was frequently moved to different homes. His angry and aggressive outbursts would continue and only get worse as he got older.

Stone would frequently run away and hitchhike, though he would usually return to the care home. At a young age, he looked up to and hung around with older boys and began using drugs. It was also around this time that he began having regular interactions with the police, a pattern that would continue throughout his life.

Around age 16, Stone left the care system and also dropped out of school. With little education and a growing heroin addiction, Stone entered into a life of crime.

A Life of Crime

To support his drug habit, Stone turned to burglary and theft, often breaking into sheds and stealing lawnmowers and other tools that he could sell. As his addiction worsened, he resorted to increasingly violent crimes, including muggings and armed robberies. During the 1980s and early 1990s, Stone served time in prison for assaulting a man with a hammer during a robbery, stabbing a man, attacking a police officer, and committing two armed robberies.

He was also arrested for assaulting a former girlfriend, but the charges were later dropped when she refused to testify. He was also a suspect in the murder of a man named Francis Jegou, who had been robbed and stabbed to death in Maidstone in 1976. Stone was 16 at the time, and the murder occurred close to where he was staying. He is alleged to have later admitted his guilt to a psychiatrist.

Stone was questioned about the crime, but never charged due to a lack of evidence. Though Stone’s sister, Barbara, believes that he is innocent of the murders for which he is currently locked up, she did say that she believed he was responsible for the murder of Jegou, and that he came to her shortly after the killing and asked her to hide a knife. He was also suspected of intentionally pushing a friend who had fallen under a London train as he stood next to Stone.

In addition to his criminality, Stone had a documented history of severe mental illness. He had been committed to a psychiatric hospital where he was diagnosed with a psychopathic disorder. He was also reportedly banned from most of the pubs around Medway for fighting and disorderly behavior.

Murders of Lin and Megan Russell

At around 4 p.m. on the afternoon of July 9, 1996, 45-year-old Lin Russell arrived at Goodnestone Primary School in Chillenden, Kent, to pick up her two daughters, six-year-old Megan and nine-year-old Josie, from a swimming gala. Lin, Megan, and Josie, along with their family dog, Lucy, then began their walk home through the countryside.

Approximately twenty minutes later, they passed a beige parked car on Cherry Garden Lane. A man then got out of the car, brandishing a hammer and demanding money. Lin told the man that she didn’t have any money with her, but said she could go home and get some.

The man then struck Lin with the hammer. Lin screamed for Josie to run, and as she attempted to flee, the attacker chased her down and dragged her back to the small copse by the footpath. He then bound and blindfolded all three of them with strips from the girls’ swimming towels and bludgeoned them all with the hammer in a frenzied attack.

Lin, Megan, and Lucy were all killed in the attack, while Josie was left with severe injuries. Lin’s husband, Shaun, arrived home that afternoon, and as the hours passed with no word from his wife or daughters, he grew increasingly worried. At around 9 p.m. that night, Shaun called the police. A search team with dogs combed the area and discovered the bodies around midnight. Josie, who was clinging to life, was rushed to the hospital.

Investigation

After Shaun was told the horrible news, he was able to visit Josie in the hospital before being interviewed by the police and quickly cleared of any involvement. Three days after the murders, on July 12, a bag containing the towel strips was found in some hedges near the crime scene.

In late August, Josie was discharged after spending more than six weeks in the hospital. In March 1997, details of the crime were made public in an attempt to solicit information from the public. Multiple witnesses reported seeing a beige car driven by a white man near the scene of the killings. Josie Russell’s description of the attacker was a white man in his 20s, about 5ft 11’ with spikey blonde or brown hair.

In July 1997, the story was featured on the British television series Crimewatch. The day after the broadcast, police received a call from a psychiatrist who told them that the e-fit composite resembled one of his patients, Michael Stone.

When the police talked to the caller and other medical personnel who treated Stone, they were told of Stone’s violent and aggressive threats and fantasies, which included murdering his probation officer, killing people and their families, and killing children.

Arrest and Trial

Stone was arrested in July and held until his trial in October 1998. He was charged with the murders of Lin and Megan Russell. From the beginning, the case against him was entirely circumstantial. There was no forensic evidence or witnesses that linked him to the crime.

The killer had left a bloody fingerprint on Josie’s lunchbox, and several hairs were also found that did not belong to the victims. A black bootlace that was smeared with blood was also left at the scene. This evidence, as well as the bloodstained towel strips recovered near the scene, was tested using the techniques available at the time, and no links to Stone were found.

On the first day of Stone’s trial, the prosecutor for the Maidstone Crown Court told the jury: “I will tell you straight away there is no scientific evidence to link Stone to the scene.” The prosecution argued that the bootlace found at the scene was the type of item an addict would use to inject heroin. It was argued that Stone’s drug addiction was the motive for the attempted robbery and subsequent murders.

The prosecution’s case hinged on the testimony of Damien Daley, an inmate who was locked up with Stone while awaiting trial. Daley testified that Stone confessed to him about the murders, a claim which Stone vehemently denied. Daley’s charges of arson and grievous bodily harm were dropped in exchange for his cooperation.

Two other witnesses, Mark Jennings and Barry Thompson, both convicted criminals, also testified that Stone confessed to them about the murders while they were locked up. A fourth witness, Sheree Batt, testified that she had seen Stone wearing bloodstained clothes on the day of the murders. Stone, who was a habitual drug user, was unable to produce an alibi or account for his whereabouts that day.

On October 23, 1998, after more than 15 hours of deliberation over two days, Michael Stone was found guilty of the murders of Lin and Megan Russell and the attempted murder of Josie Russell.

Appeal and Second Trial

Stone’s conviction was quashed when it was learned that one of the witnesses, Barry Thompson, admitted to lying on the witness stand. It also came out that another witness, Mark Jennings, had been paid £5,000 by The Sun newspaper before he had given evidence. Damien Daley admitted to lying about his drug use while on the stand, but maintained that Stone had confessed to him.

Also, Jean Batt, the mother of Sheree Batt accussed her daughter of lying to the jury and that the day she saw Stone with the bloody clothes was actually July 26, and not July 9, the day of the murders.

Following these revelations, a retrial was ordered in 2001, during which Stone was once again found guilty and given three life sentences with a tariff of 25 years.

Lingering Doubt

Since his arrest, Michael Stone has consistently maintained his innocence. According to his sister, he has been approached by the parole board; however, he is unwilling to consider it because he views accepting parole as an admission of guilt.

Stone’s attorney, Mark McDonald, appealed the conviction again in 2005 on the basis that Daley’s testimony was unreliable and self-serving. This appeal was rejected. It has been noted that neither Daley, Jennings, or Thompson offered any details during their testimonies that were not already available in the newspapers.

The witnesses also described a beige car, which Stone did not own. And though he did bear some resemblance to the e-fit composite, he was considerably older and shorter than the man described by Josie Russell.

There has also been speculation that the murders were committed by convicted serial killer Levi Bellfield. Bellfield, who is serving life in prison for murder, confessed to the Russell murders in 2022 but later retracted his confession. Police believe that Bellfield is either lying in order to play mind games or was offered some sort of payment.

Over the years, Stone’s legal team has continually petitioned the Criminal Cases Review Commission to refer his case to the Court of Appeal. Thus far, they have been unsuccessful. However, according to a January 2026 article from the BBC, the CCRC is currently reviewing an application.

A spokesperson said, “It would be inappropriate for us to discuss the case or make any further comment while the application is being reviewed.”

Closing Thoughts

It is important not to lose sight of the fact that the true victims in the case are the members of the Russell family. Shaun, who lost his wife and daughter, and Josie, who lost her mother and sister and nearly her own life, are left with the trauma and memories of that horrible day nearly 30 years ago.

Whether he is guilty or not, it was Michael Stone’s lifestyle of drug use and violent criminality that put him in a situation where his fate rested in the hands of other convicted criminals.

Yet one chilling question remains: if Michael Stone didn’t kill Lin and Megan Russell, who did?
