Since the family were conservative Christians they didn't spoil her, which means she secretly hated them due to being reactionary, hence her hanging out with bad boys. I don't think her parents thought the boys were anything but romantic friends, since Christians don't let children date. The bad boys are a result of social deprivation in the local area.
