In March 1981, 30-year-old Marianne Bachmeier, a West German mother shot and killed the man who murdered her 7-year-old daughter inside of a courtroom. Decades later, the incident is still remembered

Background
The March 1981 killing of Klaus Grabowski by Marianne Bachmeier is one of the most notable and high-profile instances of vigilantism in the history of West Germany. The incident drew considerable attention due to the sensational and shocking nature of the crime.
Grabowski, a convicted sex offender, was on trial for the abduction, assault, and murder of Bachmeier’s 7-year-old daughter, Anna. On the third day of the trial, Bachmeier shot Grabowski to death in front of a stunned courtroom. She would later serve three years in prison for her actions.
Opinions differed as to whether the punishment was too lenient or too harsh considering the circumstances. Many sympathized with the grieving mother and felt that justice had been done. More than 45 years later, the case remains relevant to understanding vigilante justice.
A Troubled Childhood
Born on June 3, 1950, Marianne Bachmeier had a difficult childhood from the very beginning. After World War II, her parents had fled from East Prussia to the small town of Sarstedt near Hildesheim in Lower Saxony, West Germany, where Marianne was raised. Marianne’s father had reportedly served in the Waffen-SS.
Marianne was raised in a devout, conservative, and deeply religious home. Her father was a stern man and a heavy drinker who spent more time at the local bar than at home. She would later remember the household as deeply unhappy — a tension that later ended in her parents' divorce.
When Marianne was a teen, her mother remarried. Her new stepfather was strict and authoritative, and the constant arguments between them eventually led her mother to put Marianne out of the house.
In 1966, at sixteen, Marianne became pregnant. Knowing she couldn't raise a child, she placed the baby for adoption. Two years later, at eighteen, she became pregnant by her boyfriend; she later said she was also raped shortly before the birth of the second baby. Again, she placed the child up for adoption. Both children found homes with other families.
Struggling Mother
In her early twenties, Marianne was working at a pub called Tipasa in Lübeck and dating the manager. At 22, she became pregnant for the third time. This time she chose to keep the baby. Her daughter, Anna, was born on November 14, 1972.
Marianne struggled to raise Anna alone, often having to bring her to the pub while she worked. Because of her lack of support, Anna was treated more like an adult than a child by her mother and was frequently left to care for herself while Marianne worked. According to friends of Marianne, Anna was a vibrant child but, due to circumstances, she, like her mother, had an unhappy and turbulent childhood.
Murder of Anna Bachmeier
On May 5, 1980, after an argument with her mother, seven-year-old Anna decided to skip school. At some point that day, she was abducted by Klaus Grabowski, a 35-year-old butcher who lived nearby. Anna was familiar with Grabowski, having visited him before to play with his cats.
Grabowski held her at his home for several hours and sexually assaulted her, then strangled her with a pair of his fiancée's tights. Afterward, he bound her body, packed it into a box, and left it on the shore of a canal.
Grabowski was already a convicted sex offender who had previously served time for assaulting two girls. In 1976, Grabowski agreed to chemical castration. However, he later attempted to reverse the procedure through the use of hormone treatment.
Grabowski’s fiancée turned him in to police. After his arrest, Grabowski tried to shift the blame onto Anna, claiming he had not abused her and that Anna had tried to extort money from him to keep quiet; he said he killed her because he feared returning to prison.
Courtroom Killing
On the third day of Grabowski’s trial, March 6, 1981, Marianne smuggled a .22-caliber Beretta pistol into Room 157 of the Lübeck District Court. As Grabowski waited, she drew the weapon and fired between six and eight shots. Six rounds struck Grabowski, killing him instantly.
Bachmeier then lowered the gun and was arrested without resistance. Officers later testified they heard her say she had wanted to face him: "Unfortunately, I only got the pig from behind." During a later court-ordered handwriting test, Bachmeier wrote, "I did it for you, Anna.”
The shooting became one of the most famous cases of vigilante justice in West German history. It drew intense media coverage, with television crews arriving from around the world. Public opinion split sharply: many saw a grieving mother who took justice into her own hands, and she received gifts and support while in custody; while some saw a dangerous vigilante who had defied the legal process.
To help cover her legal costs, Marianne sold her story to the news magazine Stern for 100,000 Deutsche marks (roughly $58,500). After Stern published her life story, which included the adoptions of her first two children, some readers began to question how blameless she had been, given the difficult life Anna had led.
Meanwhile, the West German public debated how Grabowski, a convicted child sex offender, had been permitted to reverse his voluntary chemical castration.
Trial and Sentencing
Bachmeier was first charged with premeditated murder. Prosecutors later reduced the charge to manslaughter, weighing her grief and mental state at the time of the killing. After 28 days of trial, she was convicted on March 2, 1983, of manslaughter and unlawful possession of a firearm.
The court accepted the defense argument that the act was not premeditated, though a subsequent documentary would later allege that Bachmeier rehearsed the shooting in the basement of the pub where she worked. She was sentenced to six years in prison and released on probation after serving three.
Aftermath
After her release, Marianne married a teacher in 1985 and moved with him to Lagos, Nigeria, where he taught at a German school. The couple divorced in 1990, and Marianne moved to Sicily, working as an aide in a Palermo hospice. While there, she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and returned to Germany.
In 1994, thirteen years after the shooting, she gave a radio interview and published her autobiography. On September 21, 1995, she appeared on the German talk show Fliege and said she had shot Grabowski to stop him from spreading lies about Anna.
Marianne Bachmeier died on September 17, 1996, at age 46, of pancreatic cancer in a Lübeck hospital. To her dying day, Marianne Bachmeier expressed no remorse. She was buried beside her daughter, Anna, in Burgtor Cemetery in Lübeck.
Over the decades, the case has inspired numerous plays, films, documentaries, and books. Her story is one that resonates with many people: a grieving mother who sought justice for her daughter no matter what it cost her.

I do not know enough about this case to opine whether "justice was served." When we discuss the tragic lives of people like Marianne Bachmeier, it may in fact be impossible to make any such determination...
This case is such a difficult one because it sits between justice and revenge. It’s easy to understand Marianne’s anger as a mother, but it also raises uncomfortable questions about what happens when personal grief replaces the legal system. A complicated case that people still debate decades later.
