Murder Mystery in Syracuse: The Savage Slaying of Carol M. Ryan
In 1996, 42-year-old Carol M. Ryan was viciously murdered after a night out in Syracuse. The details of her injuries shocked investigators and the identity of her killer remains a mystery
Background
In the early morning hours of September 1, 1996, 42-year-old Carol M. Ryan was looking forward to returning to her home in the Eastwood neighborhood of Syracuse, New York, after a night out bar hopping.
That morning, around 6:30 a.m., she was found by a fisherman, naked and severely wounded, lying on the side of Route 91. Carol’s injuries initially proved a mystery to doctors. But what they later determined to be the cause was unthinkable.
Carol M. Ryan
Born in Boylston, New York, on the Fourth of July 1954, Carol May Paul was the daughter of Wilfred and Edith Paul and was one of seven siblings. She enjoyed singing in school concerts and was a member of her 7th and 8th grade chorus.
In the early 1970s, she married her first husband, Clark Hamilton, and they had a son named Shawn. After the two divorced, she married her second husband, Patrick Ryan III, a Vietnam veteran. This marriage also ended in divorce.
Carol was very close to her mother. When Edith died during the spring of 1996, Carol needed an outlet for the overwhelming grief she felt. She began numbing herself with alcohol and was eventually pulled over while driving and charged with a DUI. With her driver’s license suspended, Carol had to walk or hitch rides to wherever she was going.
September 1, 1996
On the night of August 30, 1996, Carol got dressed up and went out on the town. Witnesses would later claim they saw her around midnight at the Dinosaur Bar-B-Que restaurant in Syracuse. Other witnesses recalled seeing her at Pro’s Grill, a small dive bar on Willow Street between 12:30 and 1:15 a.m.
Patrons at the East Room Bar on James Street in Eastwood remembered seeing Carol there from around 1:30 a.m. until closing time at 2 a.m. Despite the late hour, she wasn’t ready for the night to end. She had enjoyed dancing and playing pool and offered to buy breakfast for anyone interested in going out to eat. There were no takers.
The last anyone saw of her that night was when she left the bar and began trying to hitch a ride.
The East Room Bar was right down the road from Grant Village apartments at 129 Village Drive, where Carol lived alone with her cat in apartment number four. However, she never made it home.
A Horrific Discovery
Around 6:30 a.m. on the morning of September 1, a local fisherman made a horrific discovery along Route 91. A naked woman – her body beaten and discolored by savage wounds – was lying on the pavement at the entrance to the Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency, across the street from the Jamesville Reservoir.
The man quickly went to call 911, then returned to the badly injured woman. He asked her several times what had happened; however, she was unable to respond. The woman, who would later be identified as Carol M. Ryan, was transported to Upstate University Hospital.
Five hours into the surgery, which was intended to repair the extensive injuries on and inside her body, she died. She was laid to rest beside her beloved mother in Mount Adnah Cemetery in Oswego County, New York.
There had been so much tissue damage that doctors were at a loss concerning what had caused the injuries to the 42-year-old Ryan. The medical examiner spent hours attempting to answer that question and returned with a 22-page autopsy report that no one was prepared for.
After being brutally beaten, bruised, scraped, and scratched, multiple blunt force injuries and a massive loss of blood had brought about her demise – the most serious of those injuries caused by an explosive device which had been inserted into her vagina while she was still alive before it was detonated.
The device had the strength of a quarter stick of dynamite, which explained the unusual scraps of red paper material that were found at the crime scene. Unfortunately, much of the DNA evidence that existed was destroyed by the detonation as well as the surgery to try to save her life.
Suspects and Theories
In the aftermath of the brutal murder of Carol Ryan, theories abounded concerning who could have committed such an intensely heinous crime. Was it someone she had met that night, or someone from her past? Police chased hundreds of leads, which led to no definitive answers.
Several persons of interest included Carol’s ex-husband, Patrick Ryan, and two of her ex-boyfriends, including one who allegedly used a quarter stick of dynamite to blow up a squirrel on one occasion. Despite this, they were all reportedly investigated and cleared by authorities.
Another strong person of interest was a man who was in the East Room Bar at the same time Carol was there that night. It was learned that when he was questioned by police, he lied about what time he had been there, and also had his girlfriend lie to them to try to confirm his alibi.
Shortly after Carol’s murder, the man moved out of New York State. Although several journalists have attempted to speak with him about what happened that night, he has refused to answer their questions.
Carol Ryan’s family hasn’t given up hope that someday, someone will be held accountable. Carol’s son, Shawn Hamilton, and his children continue to hope that advances in DNA technology will provide the evidence needed to bring someone to justice.
The Onondaga Sheriff’s Office is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for taking the life of Carol M. Ryan. Anyone with information is asked to call the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office at 315-435-3051.
