Depiction of Skylar Neese

Background

It’s not uncommon for our lives to fall into a routine: school, work, chores, and a few hours of leisure to spend with our loved ones. Often, these patterns become so comfortable to us that we take them for granted until something inevitably changes: a new career or hobby, a move, an addition to the family–or a loss. One change, big or small, something lost or something gained, and the rhythm of our lives is changed forever.

Few know this better than Dave and Mary Neese, parents to Skylar Neese. The Neeses were a small family, but happy and close-knit. Every night, Skylar would go to her parents’ room, tell them she loved them, and wish them goodnight. But tragically, that all changed one sleepy summer night in June 2012; mere hours after saying goodnight, Skylar had disappeared from their quiet home in Star City, West Virginia–never to return home again.
