In June 1989, after years of alleged threats, stalking, harassment, and abuse, 44-year-old Cindy James was found dead. She had been tied up and drugged, yet the cause of death was somehow inconclusive
this is such a fascinating case because i feel like it really could be her staging everything but could equally be someone else's doing. whenever i think about ellen greenburg my mind also wanders to the case. it's difficult to believe that investigators really did their best work since they already had preconceived ideas about her mental health.
Judging by the fact she needed help to be tied up since it would be impossible for a non-drugged person to do it and impossible for a drugged person to do it, she had horrific nightmares as a child, had a mysterious boyfriend who committed suicide, there was no evidence of a break-in, a policewoman saw the telephone ringing meaning it wasn't faked, she hated her ex-husband, and her husband was cleared of her murder, this indicates that her boyfriend faked his suicide and that the reason she never gave details about him is because they were involved in B.D.S.M, implying the "suicide" was actually a B.D.S.M act which went awry. She panicked and fled out of fear of being shamed for being involved in a B.D.S.M relationship and because her boyfriend was abusive - as well, both of these things would make her the prime suspect in his murder and given the time period would get her successfully found guilty - she joined the relationship in the first place before knowing it was B.D.S.M because she was vulnerable to exploitation, and her boyfriend committing suicide has truth in it: he had a troubled childhood which is why he turned to B.D.S.M, he had suicidal tendencies, and he was interested in sexual murder-suicide/suicide pact and possibly cannibalism.
She was exploited by her husband because she was vulnerable and because she had P.T.S.D, and this is why she hated him. Her boyfriend tracked her down and they restarted their relationship, and he was just as abusive. She kept calling the police but never turned him in because she didn't want him to get sent to jail no matter what she did, and the B.D.S.M acts ultimately escalated to her murder: since there was no male body found we can assume the boyfriend was concerned someone would intervene before he committed suicide, and the boyfriend went into hiding out of shame for believing himself to have failed her by not committing suicide after killing her, thus violating the fact they were in a relationship and thus would do anything with each other including following her into death. The nightmares as a child indicate a childhood stressor, and "Hack" is a Hiberno-Norman name I believe, indicating the family was marginalized in proudly Anglo British Columbia. Women date and marry men who are like their fathers, and thus this indicates the father was exploitative to the mother, the exploitation being attributed to marginalization and Norman patriarchy. This combined with the stresses of marginalization on the family generally resulted in Cynthia having horrific nightmares, the nightmares contributing to stress and anxiety as a child and adult, which allowed her to be exploited by her boyfriend and husband.
She had a haunting beauty. Rest in peace Cindy.
